Description:
Model 542 is a 19-inch rack-mountable, dual-port probe. A single i960 RISC processor drives the monitoring of two Ethernet segments simultaneously. The probe collects valuable statistics and trend data at the speed of the LANs, keeping separate tables and information about each segment. The model 542 is an economical way to see more segments while consuming less space in your crowded racks.Model 542 also opens the door to RMON monitoring for switched networks. Many switches are now providing a built-in monitoring port - also called a copy port or mirror port - that allows an external probe to monitor switch traffic. Called Roving Analysis Port (RAP) by 3Com, this intelligent switch monitoring capability is built into the CoreBuilder 2500/6000, CoreBuilder 5000, and SuperStack II switch solutions. To take advantage of this information source, a probe must have two ports - one connected to the special switch monitoring port listening to switch traffic, and a second connected to a standard network segment to communicate vital information, statistics and alarms back to the central management station. The 542 was designed with this configuration in mind. A special, software-selectable mode restricts one port to monitoring or "listen-only" for just this purpose.
