One VPN at a time, April 30, 2008
By user (Outer Sobovia, Washington)
This product is a Qwest rental for a small, 5-station office. It works fine for internet access, but it will not allow more than one Cisco VPN client to be active at one time. Since it's necessary for the people in this office to access the company intranet for everything from timesheets to requisitions and forms--it's a real headache.

So far, we've found no solution. Qwest says they don't offer vpn support. Actiontec was no help at all. And I haven't found a similar problem with a solution yet on any of the forums I've looked at.

If you're looking for a wireless modem that will work seamlessly with multiple VPN users, look elsewhere.

***UPDATE***

After a LOT of casting around for a solution to the dropped connection issues, I've found that changing a line in the target Cisco VPN router fixed the problem of allowing multiple vpn connections to access via this modem.

So it's not an Actiontec issue. But I'm leaving the rating the same due to the complete lack of help from Actiontec in clearing the issue up.

Actiontec 704 provides both wireless and wired connection to your dsl provider. Home networks with flexibility and efficiency are possible with this device.

This has been a reliable product for the past month. I have liberty bell DSl service, and this was the only modem they said they would support, so being a novice to the DSL equipment & service I bought it. I got it at Best Buy for >$100, and had no trouble getting the service once my line was activated. However, I did have trouble getting the wireless work with my Vista Laptop initially. After a short conversation with the Tech Support people, it's been working ever since. I've only had one time where the modem was not working wirelessly (worked just fine for our computer that was plugged in)...so all I did was turn it off and then back on..and it worked again.

I have it plugged in in the basement, via our desktop, and use the laptop throughout the house...no problems with signal strength. I only wish it were faster than the 54Mbps, but it is a vast improvement over the dial-up we had. No problems with youtube type video downloads and we only have the 256 connection.

solved internet drop out problem, January 22, 2008

After a few months of intermitent issues with the internet dropping out though modem - I found out it was due to the power source. I changed outlet and it works fine. Never had any other problems with the unit.

I've gotten two units from Verizon. The first would not get more than 356k download when I was suppose to get 3800k. The second one I got worked for two weeks then went back to the same problem. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Especially if you have to pay $100 for it.

Simple ADSL Modem with switch and Wirless Access Point, September 25, 2007
By user (Texas, USA)
I had no issues with this product. Read the short instructions and use the Setup Buddy. I was connected and running with 2 wired computers and 2 wireless within 30 mniutes. I received another manufacture's modem / access point (no switch). It took hours to set up 3 years ago.

This was simple. A dog with a note in it's mouth could set this up in minutes. I have been running for a month. Their are no dropped packets or disconnects. It is solid and far less hot than the prior equipment.

I have three of these. I am using them in what is (for a home network) a fairly complex configuration. They are based on Linux (Busybox). I have two complaints with them. (1) They haven't been as robust as I would like. (2) There is no way to change the MTU from the web interface. You can change it by ssh-ing into them and manually changing the setting, but there is no way to save it, so the next power cycle means having to set it again.

I have also been through Hawking, Westell, and Zoom products without finding one I am happy with - although the Hawking and the Actiontec have seen the most time in service on my network.

At this point I am searching for something better due to repeated lock-ups, which is how I happened up on this listing. Surely someone makes a "bulletproof" dsl modem?

    Poor Range, September 13, 2007
By user
I don't own this router, but my father-in-law has one. The range is terrible. Only 2 rooms away the reception is poor. Stick with Linksys products. I just bought the Linksys WRT54GS and installed it on the top floor of the house, and I get great reception, even in the basement 2 levels below.

At least there was some help, February 17, 2007

After fussing with ATT and Zoom X6, I bought this item. Suffered through the warnings at Actiontec support hotline (I even called ATT as it suggested and got even more lost due to the wrong VCI/VPI number that ATT gave) and finally got through quickly to an agent who was able to help me get connected.

THe support line help convinced me that this ugly box is here to stay.

Needs to be rebooted often..., December 26, 2006
By user (Seattle)
I received this unit for free from Verizon. Previous to this was using a Westell DSL modem. I never had any problems with the Westell, however I have to reboot this unit about once every 3 to 5 hours because it drops it's WAN connection. Most of the time the LAN connection stays so I can transfer files between my PC and laptop but I cannot access the internet. Usually a reboot fixes things. All in in all I say buy a linksys or another reputable brand. While not total junk, this product seems to have it's issues as evidenced by the amount of users here expiriencing the same problems as I have. Strangely enough all of these users seem to be using Verizon DSL. Hmmmm.....

I received this router from Verizon to upgrade my system after a lightning strike. What a mistake. The router will not stay connected to the DSL service. We have 3 computers hooked to the router. Two via wireless card and one cabled directly to the modem/router. Two with Windows XP Pro and one with Windows 98. All PCs act the same when connected to the network. After two hours of usage the power switch must be cycled on the router and the connection on the PC must be renewed. Customer support from Actiontec has been non-existent. Email replies from support offer the Actiontec salute by sending consumers to their DSL provider. After a replacement unit from Verizon performed the same way, I gave up. (Remember, these are the same people who have been awarded the hardware contract for Verizon's FIOS network. Looks like I will not upgrade to that service any time soon.)

On a positive note, I have worked the router into my exercise routine. Constant trips to the router to cycle the power switch have allowed me to spend less time on the treadmill and more time walking the halls of my home.

It works fine for me..., October 31, 2006
By user (Redmond, wa USA)
I bought this when getting Qwest DSL. The only problem I've had (so far) was on Qwest's side, where my phone wasn't wired for DSL when they said it would be. A (free) service call by a tech. fixed that very quickly.

As far as the modem itself goes, everything works. I've tested the ethernet ports and they get approx 100mbs. I also enabled the wireless part and got a 4-bar signal on my laptop three rooms away. Wireless was about 11mbs. The documentation was a little thin on how to set it up, but the Qwest hotline walked me through it. The modem also included a short sheet for configuring wireless.

UPDATE: I had been using VPN with my dialup service. When I got DSL, VPN would no longer work. The users guide said to contact Qwest to enable VPN pass-through, but they were not helpful. They suggested contacting Actiontec, where it was suggested I contact a group that charges per call. I decided to poke around somemore, and discovered that turning the modem Firewall Security setting from "low" to "off", VPN would start working. You'd think that somebody would have known about that...

UPDATE: This modem usually works fine for weeks at a time, but once in a while it loses its internet connection. This prompts a troubleshooting wizard to pop up. In my experience the wizard doesn't usually fix anything, and sometimes makes things worse. The best thing I've found is to turn the modem off, wait 10-20 seconds, and turn it on again. This reboot usually gets the "internet" light on the modem to turn green in about 30 seconds. I think the problem is on the Qwest side of things.

have to reboot every few hours, September 23, 2006
By user (Long Beach, CA USA)
I got this for Verizon DSL service - but since first day, it needs to be rebooted every few hours. Sometimes, IM or Skype will still work, but email and web browsing just hangs. Verizon tech support no help at all, and there's no firmware update - or so they told me. Read online that others have same exact issue. I wouldn't recommend until there is a fix to this need for reboot two or more times a day.

    GREAT GT704WG ACTIONTEC, September 19, 2006

Going on 6 months now; no hitches working with Qwest High Speed internet., September 17, 2006
By user (Colorado Springs, CO United States)
I bought my Actiontec DSL modem off the internet, replacing the rental one from Qwest (same model GT701wg). The setup went easily for the original and just had to input the signon username and password from Qwest original setup page. Then, just shipped the rental modem back to Qwest.

If you are installing the DSL modem service for the first time, I recommend that you use a rental modem for a month or so to workout the kinks with Qwest support (which suprised me to be all-american and 24/7).

I also recommend a power-filter power strip that has phone-jack filter. I lost a dial-up modem when I first moved to Colorado when lightening struck the flagpole of the school up the street from us. Most phone house connect terminals are lightening protected but this one time, it fried the external modem and an answering machine.

I have had one for 2 years without a single problem. The wireless works throughout the house without a hitch.

Great DSL modem if you are into junk, July 26, 2006
By user (Los Angeles)
I have trouble giving this even 1 star. First one lasted one week, and now the replacement is starting to hang up after 1 day.
I have to turn power off and back on every 20 minutes or lose internet connection.
The wireless is even worse. Not compatible with certain Linksys Wifi adaptors.
Stay away from this.

Blazing speed for about 9 months., July 8, 2006
By user (IA, US)
I really liked this modem until it died on me less than a year into service. Qwest replaced it for free, but the replacement died about 10 months later. They actually had the audacity to ask me if I wanted to buy another one. Save your money and buy something else, this modem isn't worth purchasing.

Short lifespan - burned out quickly, June 23, 2006
By user (Palo Alto, California, USA)
I had been using a separate modem and router but needed something more compact. I liked this initially because it was one unit with one (electrical) plug. Setting it up was a bit frustrating and I did have some issues with that. It wasn't compatible with my Nintendo DS wifi, which was also frustrating. It worked alright for about 4 months, and then it started to die. Near the end I was power cycling it 4 or 5 times a day to get it to work. I don't think it is a very quality product, especially since it burned out so quickly. In contrast, I have a Netgear router that has been working great for 5 years. So perhaps Netgear raised my expectations for electronics, but I fully expect a product to last a couple of years at least if I am paying $90 for it.

Zero for Two with Actiontec, June 6, 2006

Of the two Actiontec DSL modems I've purchased, each has failed after about one year of service. They work fine when they work, but they don't seem to work for very long.
