Reliable and easy to set up, January 16, 2003
By William Jankowski (Mystic, Connecticut)
I'd been running a home network on another company's wired router, with a broadband DSL connection. It was functional, but about once a week, I needed to reset the modem, router, and re-boot the computers to keep the system running.

The old router was destroyed when we took a close lightning strike during a thunderstorm. I found the DI-614+ and the DWL-650 card on a great sale, so decided to go 802.11.b compatible wireless for only [a little] more than it would have been to go back to a wired network.

Setup (including WEP) was a snap from any of the computers on the network using the html based setup utility, and the network has stayed up for weeks at a time without a reset.

The only reason I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 is the somewhat chunky design.

...UPDATED on 1/30 - I just brought home an iBook w/ an Airport card. Once I figured out what Apple needed to ID the network, the router has been working flawlessly.

I have had my D-Link DI-614+ set up for an hour now, and it works great. It is very easy to set up, as long as you read the directions. I read the instructions over a few times before beginning and followed them exactly, and was surfing from my backyard in lliterally 20 minutes. I put an Airport card in my ibook this afternoon, and it connected immediately. I researched and stressed over Mac-PC compatibility for a couple of weeks before making my purchases, but it was not an issue at all (I networked the iBook running OSX with a new Dell running Windows XP). The range is rediculously large - not only can I access the internet from each of the 4 corners of my .22/acre suburban tract (the house is ordinarly wood frame construction), but I walked across the street and 3 doors down with no service interruption before deciding it was too cold to test it further. If I didn't encrypt the signal, I figure I could provide internet access for 14 houses besides my own! It appears wireless has arrived for those of us like myself who only know the basics about computers.

Terrific price/performance compared to other
802.11b wireless routers.

Got this with my 650+ card and both worked
great out of the box. The router is
real easy to set up (no CD needed) and the
wired LAN was ready to go in minutes.

Wireless config was also fast and easy. Works
great even in a mix with 11Mbps 802.11b devices.

The caveats:
Early firmware updates were sort of
glitchy. One disappointment was that
DLINK took out the ability to generate
passphrases on the router and didn't
document it anywhere. That's OK if
you don't mind rekeying these or
cutting and pasting from a file.
Fortunately these are easy to back out.

Support response is not particularly
fast.

One the other hand the latest updates
work well and I've been able to use
the router and adapter in combination
other older products from Linksys and
USRobotics with good results.

What an awesome wireless capable router!, January 8, 2003

I was amazed at all the features this thing came with. Parental controls, MAC filtering, IP filtering, URL filtering, the usual NAT port forwarding, 256-bit WEP, blazing wireless speeds at about 8Mbps anywhere in my home, and more.

I am definitely pleased with my D-Link DI-614+ and it's capabilities and over all performance. It has also been reliable enough to have made it through a couple small LAN parties I've held with a couple friends. We played all sorts of games online for hours on end and found no problems setting up the router to keep our computers safe and in working order for all games.

I am also happy to report that the DWL-650+ and DI-614+ works good for online gaming on my laptop as well. I was able to play some counter strike with no increase in ping when compared to my wired PCs. I was very suprised and glad this didn't give me any problems in all of my situtations.

I'd recommend this for gaming as you can see, and of course it has handled all of my normal actions like web surfing, playing java/shockwave based games, file sharing programs, and more. Another plus is that this router has great security and was rated stealth all on ports when I tested it online.

because Santa brought me a wonderful present. I recently received a wireless network "kit" of sorts for christmas. It included this D-Link DI-614+ wireless router and a DWL-650+ wireless CardBus adapter. I was able to set this all up in about 30 minutes empowering me to be surfing the web on christmas morning on my newly found wireless freedom.

The install was quite easy being that there are quick install guides to take you through everything step by step. The performance is great as well. I get an above 70% signal strength in almost everywhere in my home. It's a lower reception in the kitchen and I imagine it is because of the microwave or refrigerator. I still get a connection though so I am not too worried.

I am very pleased with Santa this year and would recommend that everyone get one of these if you have a home network and a laptop. Going wireless almost seems like a necessity if you have a laptop. I mean being mobile is what a laptop is all about right? Of course I still keep my Ethernet connection by my docking station so when I need to charge up my battery I can be wired with the built in Ethernet port on my laptop.

I purchased the Dlink DI-614+ to network 2 computers to our cable modem. Installation was a little tricky but I was able to get tech help with a very short wait. I did have issues with a VPN, I was getting disconnected from the VPN about every 10 minutes. But this was resolved by downloading the latest firmware. This also was a little tricky, I didn't realize you download the firmware and just leave it on your desktop. Don't try to open it, it will load itself at about step 6. After that it has worked just great. I have it linked to a DWL-520+ wireless PCI adapter. I had problems with the adapter on the second computer, the mouse would hang up after about an hour or two of inactivity. This also was resolved by downloading the latest firmware for the DWL-520. The speed has been very good. No problems since the new firmware.

I bought this a week before Christmas for use with my wireless laptop. It came with a standard HP wireless card @ 11mbps. I have no trouble setting it up from my desktop computer. WEP encryption is just as easy to setup! And better yet, when I set up my web server the router demonstrated it's virtual addressing options to redirect to one computer. I recommend this product for anyone. I have only one complaint and I believe it is my card. The signal stops working sometimes but comes on after a minute. Check it out!

I bought the DI-614+ and a dlink PCI adaptor DWL-540+ and both worked like a charm right out of the box. First thing I did was upgrade to the latest firmware. Have two computers sharing an internet connection with a cable modem, one is connected via the ethernet switch, the other is wireless. Although I'm pretty savvy on hooking up these sorts of networks, I followed the instructions in the quick start guide and they worked great. Got 22 Mbps at 100% signal quality and 66% signal strength, although the PCs are only 100 ft apart (two walls). Noticibly faster than using the internet connection sharing feature in Windows.

I purchased this just over a week ago to expand my home network by adding WiFi capability. Running CAT5 wire around the house is not as attractive when it goes beyond 5 drops.

My initial intention was to go with the Linksys equivalent, but I was lured by the 22Mbps offered by the D-Link DI-614+.

Generally, getting it up and running was easy and the features are impressive. It can synchronize time using an NTP server on the internet or you own internal time server. Web based management makes configuration a breeze. You can save the configuration file to your hard drive and upload later if you lose it (a feature lacking in many such devices, even high end ones). You can even have it e-mail the logfile entries to you. Lots of leds, a sleek looking body and two highly articulating antennas (you can adjust the to almost any polarization)

There are a couple of downsides to this model. For example, it's a must that you update the firmware almost as soon as you install it (not unique to D-Link). I was disappointed with the lack of a "router" mode (vs "gateway" mode) that will turn of NAT. Also, you cannot add any static routes manually. It does not support any routing protocols, such as RIP. Lastly, it does not do SNMP. Ok, my last point is perhaps extreme, but what can I say, I believe in network management and MRTG!!!

All said, for the price, I'd say you can't go wrong getting at least one of these. You get WiFi at 2x speed, a switch, NAT router, firewall etc....

This Wireless unit and the Wireless card was a breeze to install. Only pain I suffered was when I was configuring the WEP and couldn't get the 256bit encryption to work. I finally discovered an "undocumented feature" in their software which won't allow the configuration for 256bit so I got stuck with 128bit encryption for now.

Other than that, I was thoroughly impressed.

I used this unit with my Toshiba notebook that comes with built-in wireless card. Although it took me couple hours to configure it to work, it's great after it's working. I love the security filters where I can limit my own computers to connect to this D-link router. I only gave it a 4 stars because I found this unit for [less at a department store].

You Need A Lotta Luck, December 21, 2002
By davidmarlin (South Hadley, MA United States)
I've had a lot of trouble with my d-link wireless system. It's all d-link stuff, including the di-614+, and therefore should work together well.

Sure enough, it was easy to get the network running. I disconnected my wired network and had the wireless network up and running in about an hour. Surprisingly easy.

However performance is no good, for lack of a more appropriate word. 22 Mbps? Please. Try about 1 Mbps. Remember, that's mega BITS, not BYTES (a byte is usually 8 bits for you non-techies). 1 Mbps is SLOW.

I've been on the phone twice with the useless customer support. These guys don't know anything. It actually took two calls for me to realize this. They'd be better off picking a random solution to a random problem out of a hat. I'm still waiting for the promised phone call back from the "higher" tech guys.

I'm an experienced software developer, and therefore no slouch with this kind of stuff. If you just want to surf the web, 1Mbps will still feel much faster than a good dial-up, so you can get away with it. But if you're transferring files across the network, or trying to do streaming media stuff, forget it. You're better off copying things by floppy.

I've tweaked tons of the settings, updated the "firmware", and nothing. Again, I think the product must just ....

You can read all these rave reviews like I did and think wow, but buyer beware!

    My Choice - Netgear MR-814, December 19, 2002
By msharmaz (United States)
During last five days, I spent countless hours with D-Link and LinkSys support in trying to make my home network run flawlessly. I was using D-Link DI-713P for last year and half, before it died last week when I upgraded its firmware so it won't lock up whenever I accessed internet using Windows XP. I decided to buy DI-614+ model hoping it will work better than the old one but on the contrary, I had so much trouble in setting it up that I thought I was going insane. For any changes in setup, I had to reboot my cable modem, wait two mins, reboot D-Link router, reboot my computer(BTW, I was told by tech support to do this). It drove me nuts. To top it off, the range of wireless was extremely bad. I consistently lost signal, downstairs from my office, in living room just 30-35 feet away. The admin GUI was complicated and any time it rebooted the router, I had to go through the whole reboot sequence. I called tech support, the front line tech support guy was a novice. I am a computer professional, not really a network professional but I knew much more networking than him. Later, I got a call from "supposedly" higher line of tech support, woman had nothing else to offer except resetting the router and see if that worked.
LinkSys and Microsoft wireless routers also suffer from poor wireless signals. I didn't even bother trying Microsoft router when I read about its locking up problem. Linksys' poor wireless range, though not as bad as D-Link was also unacceptable.
I had almost lost hope in all the wireless devices on the market before I used Netgear's MR-814. It has user friendly gui and various options to make the network and wireless access secure. Over that, you don't have to worry about rebooting all the devices to make any change. Its signals are great, and I am totally impressed.
My suggestion, don't even bother looking at other routers. I would hate to see others get frustrated trying to make other products work, like I did.

Unexpectedly Simple Install and Easy Config, December 18, 2002
By dan
The installation went with out a hitch, and I was very surprised to find out how easy it really is. The configuration of this device is fairly straightforward and has an intuitive layout so you will be able to find the setting you want quickly the first time.

I recommend this to others who don't want to deal with a complicated and time consuming installation.

The performance of this is good enough for me and I think I have pretty average demands from a DSL/Cable router. Plus the wireless is a huge plus.

I greatly appreciate it when I am able to install any kind of computer related hardware and have it work the way I want withing 20 minutes of opening the box. That's exactly what this D-Link did for me.

I am able to browse the Internet anywhere in my home with my laptop and a DWL-650+ plugged into it. The speeds I get are perfect since I really don't notice a difference in surfing the Internet while on my laptop (wireless) then on my desktop (wired). I am very happy with my purchase.

    Piece of ...., December 15, 2002
By Dave (Atlanta, Georgia USA)
Bought the D-Link AirPlus Wireless Laptop Networking Kit .... Contains the DI-614+ wireless router and the DWL-650+ laptop card. The box says Installation in 3 Easy Steps. Yeah right! B.S. It took me 3 hours to get the wireless internet connection to work on my laptop. I then realized I could no longer connect to the internet with my desktop. After waiting one hour on the phone for tech support, the technician was able to fix the problem on my desktop connection.

But guess what, the next day it would no longer work. Tried to re-install all over again. Forget it, there is no way I could make it work. No internet connection with the laptop or the desktop. Spent 5 hours trying to fix it, nothing works. I will return this...

Wireless routing in record time!, December 15, 2002
By ace moonbeam (Alexandria LA USA)
I can't say enough about how easily this router set up. I downloaded the latest firmware first, then I had the hardwired portion working in half an hour, and the wireless portion in another hour. The only problem I had was with the PCI receiver card in the remote unit, it didn't seem to like one of my PCI slots but as soon as I moved it things went like clockwork. I'm sharing internet via a cable modem now among 3 machines and speeds everywhere are excellent.

Great Router with Awesome Wireless Features ..., December 14, 2002
By rocketship (Space)
Security on the wireless side are as good as you are going to get for a home based product, and the speeds are good enough for home, about 6Mbps throughput in the best spots and about 2Mbps in the depths of my home.

The router itself was easy to setup and has been working great, firewall rules are easy to setup and some are even all ready there for you, you just need to activate them.

It's Everything it Promises to be., December 12, 2002
By yum beans (Chicago, IL)
First of all, the 22Mbps does make a difference. I checked my throughput with NetIQ's Qcheck on my laptop (XP) with a DWL-650+ through this DI-614+ to my wired (10/100Mbps) PC (XP) and I get an average of 7.5 to 8Mbps. When I take that very same laptop to my work or a friends house that has just the standard 11Mbps Access Point and do the same setup (2 XP machines) I only get about 3.5 to 4Mbps max. The tests I've run show that XP seems to be a little better for speeds, I am not sure exactly why though.

Everything else I use on this DI-614+ has been working since I got it. I use MAC filtering, the 128-bit WEP, although it does support 256-bit, and static IP's for security and I haven't seen anything in the logs showing an intrusion or unwanted visitors. I also use and SSID with "()" symbol in it to denote that it is a closed or "Private" Access Point.

I have upgraded to the latest firmware (2.10) and am very pleased with the speeds, range, and reliability.
I also have a couple sets of 2.4Ghz cordless phones and I see no interference on channel 11 (channel 6 is default and I experienced slower speeds with that channel).
I hope this helps you make your decision about this product.
I'd also recommend the DI-714P+ because it is supposed to be the DI-614+ with a built in print server.

bad wireless router, December 11, 2002

well just to start the only reason that im starting to hate this router is that i keep loosing wireless connectivity.

i have researched on the net and have found that im not the only person with this router that is having this problem.

everything else on the router works.

i have emailed dlink multiple times and have not received a reply fromt there technical support.

i called there technical support and they walked me through all the DEFAULT configs... and i told them it wasnt the configuration its a defect with the routers wifi.

im either hoping that they come out with a fix or im going to return it.
