Can you say S...L...O...W???, November 26, 2007
By just wondering (United States)
After hours with tech support, email after email, and updating firmware there was no fixing the fact that this router makes for a SLOW connection!!! Don't waste your money!

Wonderful product, October 12, 2007
By Web Buyer (Jersey City, NJ USA)
I have to say, i bought this product as it was cheap. After rebate i got it for $[...]. I expected it to work in two room apartment and for 6 months. Was thinking of buying a new one after I move to a new place. But its 4 years now and It still works. I get Good signal when i was 30 feet away and with 2 walls in between. I added DLink antenna and i get very good signal for this. I dont get Excellent in the farthest distance. Partly it could be because i have 2 cordless phone of same frequency (2,4 Ghz). With "Very Good" signal, my browsing was easy. Never felt its slow. Im very happy with this product. Setup is so easy. You could save your settings and track who is connected and bar connections based on IP/MAC and there are many more cool features too. The DLink support was also very good. I had to call them few times to get help in securing my network. I would rate 5. Would definetly recommend it.

Will waste your time like no other product, July 4, 2007
By Leonardo (New York, NY USA)
I have had this router for about two years, and it has never worked smoothly. The WPA-Personal implementation simply won't work, just like many of the advanced features in this unit. What is the purpose of including MAC address filtering if the router will have to be restarted every 10 minutes if you try to enable it? That is also true for many other settings in this router. By the way, every time a new device joins your network, it has to be restarted--it could be a laptop, a game console, even another D-Link product simply will not work on the first try. Spend a few dollars more and time and, ultimately, money.

Great Router for the $$$, June 14, 2007
By Anthony Barto
I bought this a couple years ago and had no problems at all with it. It was VERY easy to install and gave a solid, reliable signal at all times.

Review of D-Link DI-514 Wireless Cable, May 18, 2007
By bibliophile (Somers, NY USA)
My son was unable to estblish a reliable connection to this router from a straight line distance of less than 30 ft, albeit one floor down. We ended up purchasing a Linksys wireless router and he has been able to connect wirelessly with both his PC and his Apple laptop.

Pretty good, January 25, 2007

Had a little trouble with the installation. I am, however, pleased with the performance. I wish it had a little more range, but it performs as advertised.

Reboots and Disconnects, July 29, 2006
By Andrew B. Rawlings (Chicago, IL)
I had to return one DI-524 because it locked up and would not boot at all. Then, the one I received from D-Link did the same thing after a few days. Now, the router works some of the time. However, now it will drop wifi connections or my Vonage connection. This router is going to the trash. I'm looking for a new router now.

Don't buy even if the price is $5, May 31, 2006
By Servando (USA)
It crashs every day. Tech support sucks, you will waste your time by calling them. I wasted tenths of hours in calls and reseting the router.
My router was crashing every day, I call tech support, they asked to reset the device at least 5 times during a call waiting up to 15 min every time. They never accepted that it was defective. I just gave up. If you value your money and time don't purchase a D-Link product.
I got a Netgear and is working great, is a little bit more expensive but it worths.

It works, but some aspects are frustrating., May 26, 2006
By Damon Curry
We got this router after having no luck with a Belkin router (a new family rule: no Belkin products enter the house). This one works, for which I give it one star. The other star is for its stability - most of the time there isn't any problem but around midnight every night the thing cuts out about every two minutes.
The other really annoying thing is probably not going to affect many other users, but I am running a webserver on my computer. When I try to access the pages from within the network, I get the message "401 The web site is blocked by administrator." I couldn't find anything except for other users getting the same message - nothing on D-Link's website (and I only found discussion on their German site). But it really angers me and I'm looking into another router.
It has served well for the past year or more, but it's aggravating to have the connection cut out so often (especially when gaming) and the signal from two rooms away is almost non-existant.

Nice Options to Select from, but has some performance issues, January 24, 2006
By Bryon Gaskin (Gas City, Indiana)
THE GOOD: *There are a lot of configuration options if you choose to implement them. oOn big plus is that you can change the router's IP address to be something other 192.168.0.1 (Which is important if your cable modem or DSL modem use that address) *Works right out of the box with a simple setup wizard. I was up and running with a basic installation in about 5 minutes. *Has all of the security features you would expect on a router *Range was ok
THE BAD:: *Constantly locked up the internet connection when transferring large files, such as when sending attachments in GMAIL or YAHOO Mail. This would require the system to be reset *Many times wireless clients would not be able to connect unit the unit was reset *Speed is only 11Mbs, (this is not terrible considering that it is still much faster than most home high speed networks)
OVERALL::: *This is by no means a terrible product, but it is not the best either. oThe only way I would purchase this product is if I was purchasing it used. You can get much faster routers now for $20 to $50. *If you really want to tinker with routers, I would bypass this one and go for the Linksys WRTG54. It runs a cut down version of Linux and there are several firmware upgrades you can do to it.

Good, inexpensive wireless router, November 16, 2005
By P. Underwood
I've owned the DI-514 for about 18 months as of this writing. It's an excellent choice for a router that will be used for primarily browsing the internet via wireless. Since it's 802.11b it's a little slow transferring large files wirelessly but the wired transfer speed is excellent. Setup is a breeze and the built in firewall is easy to setup. Configuration is done through an easy to navigate, browser based interface. Since the DI-514 is discontinued it should be easy to find for a good price. Anything more than $20 is overpriced as the DI-524 (802.11g) can be had for under $30 after rebates now.

Hook this hub up with a Netgear NIC -- forget the D-Link NIC!, July 23, 2005
By Graphic designer (Midwest, United States)
. It works for me, but the one thing I noticed was that it seems the range is a bit "short" with its own brand of NIC. Here's what's up: . (The setup) I'm running a laptop and two desktops wirelessly. I also have one desktop that is wired to one of the 4 ports. The hub is on the main level and the two wireless compys are in the basement. . The range I get on the laptop (with a Broadcom G card) is awesome. I've gone up to 100-feet away and still get a great signal (and that's with three walls inbetween!)
<<<<< Here's the weird part... >>>>> I have a Netgear card and a D-Link card in the two wireless desktops. The Netgear card gets better reception than the D-Link card! Both are G and backward compatable, both are within a foot of each other, but the D-Link compy has to be closer to the hub than the Netgear one. If I switch them out -- putting the D-Link card a foot further from the hub I get "poor" reception. A foot closer and the D-Link works great. The Netgear can be anywhere I want to put it. . Overall, using a D-Link NIC with this hub (which seems logical) is not the best choice. I found the D-Link NIC to be too temperamental to dead spots; whereas the Netgear seemed to not be affected by them.
. Setup was easy. . Tech support was better than expected (I've used them three times, but not because of THIS unit.) . Can be mounted on a wall or side of desk, or elsewhere. . Haven't dropped a signal (after 3 months of use.)
. Biggest gripe about the D-Link products (this one included): why don't they add a printer port? Would be nice to have wireless printing capabilities and not have to buy a separate unit for that. Or maybe that's the point; more money spent.

Unbelievably bad!, July 15, 2005
By pk (florida)
The DI-514 router worked for me, but the wireless did not. After a session with the tech support line, I received a replacement unit which, out-of-the-box, had a dead power supply. Using a substitute power supply (properly matched) the new router turned out not to work either. It's like they sent me someone else's broken unit or something! Complete incompetence. After talking to the RMA department, I am currently waiting on a return call as to what they would like to do next. Don't buy this router!

somewhat working, July 1, 2005
By The Stupid (New York, NY United States)
When it is working, it is working. Easy to setup, easy to use. However, sometime it just "dead": although it seems to be working from the leds, you can not access the internet. You have to restart. When I say restart, I am refering to pull out the plug and push back in. Till now I haven't figure out the reason. This will happen inperiodically. Sometimes it works for two months, sometimes you have to reset everyday or even twice a day.

Solid Performance, Few Problems, Better than Netgear., June 10, 2005
By Computer Geek (Castaic, CA United States)
After failing miserably to resolve an issue with a Netgear MR814 DSL router I reluctantly swapped it for a D-Link DI-514.
I shouldn't have worried. My wireless home network was up and running in 10 minutes.
I've only experience a loss of connectivity once or twice a year. This is soved by a simple re-boot of the node in question.
I've been using this for narly two years now and signal and performance have been solid. I do not regret this purchase at all.

Works Perfect!, May 20, 2005
By Geddy Lee
Understand that I bought this unit when there was a $30 rebate. But it does it's job. However, I am a victim of SBC, and for you who have it, and don't know. SBC will give you a modem with a built in software to prevent you from broadcasting. So, throw the instructions away, they are useless. Just go ahead and call DLINK and they will fix you up in a few minutes and things will be right in your world. DO NOT call SBC. If you call them, they will tell you how to do, but you will be charged $5 fee every month for broadcasting. They say too many people share service and it cost them money.... Is anyone else tired of hearing the woes of the multi-billion dollar corporations? I recommend this unit, but just wait til there is a rebate!

Awful piece of hardware, May 13, 2005
By Joseph H. Suppers
This router has been horrendous. Yes, I've upgraded to the latest firmware and I understand how to use it. I have had a couple major issues with it. The first is that the wireless just stops working about twice a week and I have to restart the router. The second is that one time for about a day the router stopped working for all the LAN ports (the wireless still worked). All of them, just done. I tried restarting (again, I did it properly), but it was a futile effort. Then, the next day it started working again after nothing had changed. My most recent issue has been setting up a webserver. Despite properly configuring the virtual hosts, it still won't let traffic go to my server. I even put my server in the DMZ and traffic still couldn't get through! I checked to make sure everything was properly configured (firewall, filtering, etc.). This thing is awful, and I'm saying that even though I paid $10 for it. I'm not sure I'll ever buy another dlink product.

all DLink is JUNK! Avoid at any price, April 23, 2005
By ST (Jacksonville, FL)
I bought one of these two years ago, new for $150 but could never get it to work even with the matching DLink wireless card and a $90 extender. Max range was less than 30 feet line of sight! Turns out it was defective but support ran me around for weeks and wouldn't replace it. I'm a network engineer and had no trouble with a cheap Netgear router that's widely available. AVOID DLINK WHATEVER THE PRICE. It is all junk. A friend who owns a computer store got stuck with 20 of these that don't work (both single and dual antenna models are weak or don't work at all from the factory). I've never seen such a poor excuse for equipment spread around so widely. Avoid this entire brand.

You get what you pay for . . ., April 18, 2005
By W. Wilson (Plano, TX)
...most of the time. In this case, take the $7 and buy yourself lunch - you'll get a lot more for your money. This router is trash. It will never stay connected for more than a few hours at a time. The settings web-interface is unintuitive and the help is no more than a vague description of the "features." I've never gotten it to work correctly with multiplayer internet gaming and you can also forget using a psp with it. I'm still using it, and I'm plagued by it every day. One day, though. One day. I will get duct tape it to a tree stump and smash it with a hammer. It will be a good day.
