Wonder router especially if you have a Toshiba A75 laptop, December 17, 2004
By Guoqiang Wu
I have been using this router for 3 months and never regret that I bought it. Things I like about it: 1)Signal strength: the connection sustains until I get about 50 meters away from my apartment. 2)Speed: I have a Toshiba laptop (A75 series) with built-in Atheros super-G wireless card (actually this is the main reason I went for this router). As I suspected, I get a stable connection speed of 108M bps out of it! So it is not true that a DLink super-G card is required to get the super-G speed. I would expect a Netgear super-G card can get 108M connection with this router too. 3)Stability: the router has not failed my connection once yet.

Great Product, December 15, 2004
By Paul Weaver III (Vineland, NJ USA)
I purchased a D-Link DI-624 router to set up a wireless network at home. I was originally running my network with just two wireless D-Link network cards. I was running in ad-hoc mode (peer to peer), but realized it would be better to purchase a router to share my printer and cable internet connection without worrying about both PCs being turned on.
I haven't had any major problems at all with the router. Installation is simple if you follow the instructions provided. It is advisable to make sure you have the lastest OS software and router firmware updates for optimal performance.
Overall, this is a great product.

Great Router and Value., December 14, 2004
By cheekycj (Chalfont, PA USA)
After my Linksys wireless router conked out and I got the reason as 'It happens' I went with a different Mfg. I selected D-Link after a couple of co-workers (I work in an engineering dept) recommended it.
Setup/Installation: It was a nice surprise to find the installation so easy. I was up and running in under 10 mins with my Cable Modem and my desktop. I configured my laptop and got that running in under 5 mins.
Features: Wow does this thing have features. Support of VPN is nice but I really like the ability to route various requests to an ip address and a port. I can setup remote desktop to go to my desktop and only my desktop. I can setup ftp requests to come in at on port 33 to go to a server listening on port 21. Its nice.
The GUI is easy to use and features are easy to find. Anywhere from being able to deny access to certain IP addresses to Setting up Virtual Servers. The feature list is exhaustive. Even if you don't understand the full feature set the wizard will guide you through basic setup and the defaults will suffice most peoples needs.
My company's VPN worked with no problems (previous routers had to be configured specifically to support it).
Performance: (LAN is fine so I will limit this to WLAN) I have definitely noticed a vast improvement in performance and range. No more poor or fair signals downstairs. I usually get at least a good signal everywhere I use my laptop. Supporting B and G modes is a nice feature b/c friends can come over and have their own wireless cards. I have tested the WLAN performance transferring huge amounts of data (over 2 GB) and man did this beat expectations.
Reliability: I have had this router for a while now (almost 6 mos) and I probably turn it off (kickstart it) once a month. That is b/c it is something I like to do, the device does not require it. All I can say is that I have yet to see a hiccup in reliability and not a single firmware update has been needed (which is a nice change in this product market)
Overall: I recommend this product without hesitation. Get one get wireless in no time.
The router has a built in firewall but I still recommend having ZoneAlarm or something similar installed.
Enjoy the range and speed of Wireless G!

Don't go near this product!!!!!, December 14, 2004
By A.Techie (UK)
Never seen a gimmick like this product. I am an experienced techie and I have not seen a useless product and a pathetic after sales service like dlink. The product does not work out of the box - may do for very few. I had 3yr "old" 3com products which worked well with every wireless device in the house. I thought I will upgrade to a faster standard using this product, but this product is shambles. Technical support is non-existent. you will NOT get thru, if you do, they will cut you off or blame their "outsourced" service in Denmark! The router keeps dropping connection and you will be lucky if you get more than 30MBS even when in front of the router. I can;t think what interference one could have in that situation! I have never seen it go above 48Mbs even in "Super-G" mode let aside standard 803.11g which gives you 54mbs. All in all if you don;t want to pull your hair out, go for 3COM or LinkSys products which I believe do exactly what they say on the box and you might actually get some technical support!

Ripoff, December 11, 2004
By Joseph Evaristo
I bought this product from Best Buy about a year and a half ago; my family got cable and a wired network just wasn't feasible with our layout, so we went with this D-Link device.
Connection drops every few minutes, and sometimes it won't come back up until the router is rebooted...which requires unplugging the router and the modem, then putting them through their boot cycles one at a time. When it works its best we do this every other day, at its worst we do it daily; today it had to be rebooted three times in one hour.
I've tried multiple connection devices, DWL 122, DWL G650, DWL G520, and whatever one came built into my sister's Dell. Getting closer to the router hasn't helped; it still even dropped packets. (As an example, an instant message or two may simply never reach me.)
Needless to say, my family's looking for something new since their tech support's suggestions were useless.

Not the right upgrade for us., December 7, 2004
By quickhappy (Big city, big country)
We currently use an older Microsoft MN500 wireless router, which has been a bit disappointing to us. Our main need is to get reception in the basement, and the MN500 just wasn't giving good coverage. So we decided to get a new "G" unit and hope for better speed and coverage.
The good news: installed fairly easily, and the tech-help was helpful. We sorted things out and had it up and running in about 45 minutes.
The bad news: using our existing 11b receivers, there was a slight slowdown in speed. And the broadcast strength is about equal to the MN500.
We're taking it back to the store.
If you want this , you probably should be upgrading to 11g all around, and you shouldn't be trying to broadcast a signal very far.

108 Mbps is NOT working, December 6, 2004
By Joyce (Saratoga)
I use DI-624 and DWL-650 with Dell 600m. The 108 Mbps or Super G just doesn't work, the wireless connection drops every 10-20 min. Make sure you visit http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum and search for paeDISCONNECTED and you will meet many unhappy users there. I have tried both 2.42 and 2.50 firmware and many things suggested in http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum. The only way to make DI-624 and DWL-650 work for me is to disable Super G. DI-624 also works with my 802.11b came with Dell 600m.

not recommended!!!, December 2, 2004
By X. yang (LA, CA)
pros:
all the unimportant features that it claims to do.
very fast and pretty good range.
cons:
-all the features are useless if the router reboots and drops every hour. (even every minute sometimes)
-firmware 2.42 drops my entire connection, which means i have to turn off my dsl modem as well as rebooting the router.
-the newly upgraded 2.50 firmware is worse. people who are considering to buy this router will get the 2.50 version.
-firmware 2.50 have issues with routers rebooting, not connecting, i can't obtain a ip address sometimes with my dell 600m.
http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,11580469~mode=flat~days=9999~start=160
the link will tell you what other people think about the frequent reboots.
-terrible tech support.
-the advertised 108 mbps does not acheive expectations. (extremely noticeable when transferring files from a desktop and laptop, vice versa)

Perfect, November 30, 2004
By only me (CA, USA)
I purchased this for my home, and it works superb. Easy to install, easy to set up. Works perfectly. I haven't tested the speed of it, the restriction in speed is limited by my DSL anyway. It covers my entire apartment perfectly. Extra features as requiring password to use it was also no problem installing.

Works properly most of the time, November 29, 2004
By Arash (California)
Setting up was quite simple if one is familiar with some of the terms that are thrown around in the WiFi context. Haven't had any major problems. But every few days I do find that my laptop is unable to associate itself with the router. I am using a Dlink AirPlus DWL-G630 wireless card, so it's pretty much as compatible as it could get with the router. When I do get this problem with connecting, no amount of disconnecting/reconnecting, uninstalling/reinstallating on my laptop will resolve it. But a quick power down and power up of the router gets me up and connected within a couple of seconds. And as of yet, I have not found any newer firmware which might fix this problem.
But for the most part, I'm satisfied with my purchase. I have not experienced any of the horrible problems that other people have experienced with wireless routers, which require contacting techsupport or returning the router.
I would recommend this product.
good luck

Good Router - Great Price!, November 27, 2004
By compu-gurl (Arlington, Texas)
With rebate, this router cost me $39.99. Unpacked it, plugged it in, followed the quick setup instructions and I was online in less than 30 minutes. Also bought a wireless-capable laptop. Quickly found my network and was online in a jiff. No dropped signal even on the other side of the house.
I'm not a paid hack for D-Link, just a do-it-yourself computer user. I bought a Linksys broadband router over three years ago for $149.99, it has worked great too but I needed wireless for laptop access. This router has worked wonderfully and I recommend it to anyone. I have the DI-624 version C (one antenna) it is the latest update to this model so maybe that is why it has worked great.

Stay away from this product, November 24, 2004
By triode fan (California)
I bought the product from Fry's and forgot to check reviews before making the purchase. What a mistake! I can testify that even with the latest firmware, the constant router reboot (PPPoE disconnect) is a common problem. I was losing connection every 2 minutes and reconnected repeatedly that basically rendered my internet connection completely useless. Do not waste your time on this product. Release a product with this level of QA makes a lasting impression - stay away from D-Link.

This product is useless..., November 21, 2004
By Tamas M. Sajtos (San Francisco, CA USA)
My first one kept dropping the connection and then reconnect on its own. I called tech support and they sent a replacement. Guess what! The replacement had the same problem. I did a search and turned out that tons of users have this problem. This product is a real hit-or-miss so stay away!!!

Good Router for Good Price, November 17, 2004
By Agent23 (San Francisco)
Bought this router about a week ago. Has been up and running without flaws. Happy with it and have no intention to return it. I have been a D-Link user for about 3 years now and I have never experienced problems either with their fixed router or wireless router. Really easy setup and hassle free installation.

Low price for faulty hardware = waste of money, November 14, 2004
By donoglen (Cambridge, MA)
EDIT: After a firmware upgrade, the unit is working far better, and has been in use for about 3 months at my residence. Still, it drops out intermittently, and there are better choices.
(1) Drops connections - a lot. (2) Many - hundreds of websites - report the same problem. (3) D-Link hired lots of marketers to write good opinions of this device. Don't trust them. (4) I know what I'm doing. I've set up my computer on literally a dozen different networks without a problem, and configured routers of various stripes for almost a decade. This isn't a newbie error - I was floored for many hours trying to get this thing to work. (5) It still doesn't work reliably. (6) This issue isn't a 'bad unit' issue - many other people sent in their D-Link routers, got a new one, and had exactly the same problem.
Bottom line: one of the worst purchases I have made -- and I know what I'm doing. AVOID AVOID AVOID!

Worst Tech Support Ever, November 10, 2004
By Red Roller (Florida)
I have been in the computer support business for 12 years and this is by far the most inferior product with the worst tech support I have ever experienced. I bought the product because it was the least expensive at the time. I got home and got it running fairly quickly. The first thing I noticed was that the signal strength was sub-par. I decided I could live with that, however. I then set up the port mapping I needed for my network. Soon afterward the router rebooted and disabled all my port forwarding settings. It didnt erase them, it just disabled them. It did this about twice a week for the life of the router. I woke up one morning and discovered that there was no signal strength at all from the router. I tried several laptops and sure enough, no signal - not even from a foot away. I called tech support and talked to a person who gave me a list of things to try and told me to call back if they didn't work and he would give me an RMA. I called back and was told that it didnt matter what the other guy said, I had to do all the steps with the tech on the phone or no RMA. I did that, and the guy told me, "Your going to have to go through the crash recovery. I can't do that over the phone. I'll send you an email and then call me back." The long and the short, Three tech support people and two floor managers later I got the case number for the RMA. I went to RMA.DLINK.COM and thier site is down. So make that 6 calls to tech support just to get an RMA on a clearly defective product. Good luck to you if you decide to buy this product.

Excellent piece of Hardware, November 2, 2004
By Joe Brawn (Florida)
This router is excellent, have it for 6 months. Bough it to replace one from other popular vendor. Noticed the change in speed immediately even on the cabled LAN ports, performance is incredible. Range is perfect, easy to setup security. I sure recommend it!!

Set Up was Easy, Performing Well So Far, October 31, 2004
By monicae (Sacramento, CA USA)
This was my first foray into the wireless network realm. I bought this to replace my Netgear RP-114 router. I installed it over the weekend. I was not happy with the overall performance of the Netgear router (after 3 years it started having constant disruptions in service resulting in reboots and resets), which is why I decided to try D-Link. Set-up took so little effort. Basically 2 steps. I like the fact that I can turn the wireless radio off when I am not using it. Broadcast strength is fairly strong, I have no problems connecting anywhere around the house (through multiple floors and walls) or the yard. All in all, I am quite happy with my purchase so far.

Great device considering other reviews!, October 24, 2004
By A. Beckerman (Brooklyn, NY USA)
I received this yesterday and got it for a a great price (...). It was lower than other comparable products and offers the increased network speed.
Out of the box, I was able to plug it in and be up and running right away (of course without WLAN security or other customizations) despite operating previously with hard-coded internal IPs. Honestly, the hardest part was remembering how to reassign my network printer from a 192.168.1.x address to a 192.168.0.x address (ended up just using DHCP which I didn't use previously for security reasons).
My environment consists of two laptops (1 XP and 1 W2K) on wireless (the 128-bit WEP encryption was a snap to set up -- a first for me for my WLAN), a LAN-wired Brother network printer, a ReplayTV, a Win98 desktop and an XP desktop (this computer). So as a power-user, I needed a solid device and this one seems to be doing it so far (1 day in).
One important thing to take note: I modified all of the settings in the control administrator (awesome emulator to try out on d-link's website by the way) and even saved the settings to my hard drive so as not the lose them in the future in case of the need for a factory reset. However, when I got to the firmware section, I was out of date by 1 revision and when you update the firmware, you CANNOT reload saved settings. So, UPDATE THE FIRMWARE PRIOR TO CHANGING ANY SETTINGS OTHER THAN THE PASSWORD (because it will continue to prompt for the password every time you click until you change it).
Once past that, everything else was a breeze including some great extra features such as time-sync to a time server, UPNP support, DDNS updating (I can uninstall DirectUpdate now since this has built-in support for dyndns.org, easydns.com, and no-ip.com accounts if you host from your own computer).
All that's left is to configure the firewall and specify which ports I want to open to the outside (other than WLAN access, it comes already locked down out of the box which is great).
Performance has been great also, but so far I haven't run any tests or tried to compare the network traffic speed from what I had before (old router conked out anyway). There are at least no noticeable lockups, freezes, delays or other issues with the network traffic that others seem to have reported.
So, so far, this device has been a snap to set up (total time spent, maybe a few hours, but that would be much less for someone not needing to reconfigure a network printer or for someone that follows my above tip so as not to lose extra time). I didn't need any tech support so I can't comment on that, but for the price, performance and features I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to add or replace a router (at least for now since it's still a bit early to identify any long-term issues).
Just to add to the review...since posting the other day, I realized that I was using a weaker form of security in the form of WEP and so attempted WPA-PSK setup. I had some issues with it, specifically related to DHCP, despite it seeming to be straight-forward (even after upgrading all of my NIC card drivers) and had to call tech support. They replicated what I had already done before passing me over to Level 2. In Level 2, they told me to force an IP which worked, but this is a less-than-perfect solution for wireless if you travel with a laptop and roam from network to network. We even tried the Windows Alternate Configuration that exists in SP2 and that didn't work. A few hours later and still in the same situation.... I finally beat the computer by changing the starting IP address range to be 10 instead of 100. For whatever reason, the laptop was able to wirelessly pick up an IP in a lower range through DHCP using WPA-PSK once I made the change. Even though that was a hassle, I'm glad it's over with and still feel pretty good about this little thing.
