Has stability issues, October 4, 2004

Reboots randomly. Firmware has stability issues. Also drops WAN (PPPoE) connections randomly.

its all good but the manual is wrong & incomplete, October 3, 2004
By Big Boss (Columbia, SC)

Fellas,
1. If you want to use encryption - do not use wizard option on the routers webpage. Manual just doesn;t talk about it much - call support if you cant figure it out.
2. dont use the Clone MAC Address option as asked by their manual - else everytime you reboot your machine you will have to reconfigure the router and clone it again. atleast thats what happened with my computer (WinXP connected to Roadrunner).

Great performce, price, and ease of use., October 2, 2004

Took it out of the box, connected the power and CAT5's, and I was done. There is also the option to completely customize the setup which i did after trying the vanilla config.

Best buy for the money.

    Worst Ever, October 2, 2004
By Brian N. Friday
Works for about 3.5 minute intervals then disconnects. This product is the worst ever. Don't waste your money. Replaced with a Linksys, now wireless network NEVER disconnects.

Great little router, October 1, 2004
By Jonathan Seckler (Austin, Texas)
I bought this unit because my company was offering a (...)special pricing deal. I set it up and it all worked flawlessly. Then I updated the driver for my Fujitsu laptop and voila! I have a 108MB network at home! Great product!

Dlink software support is horrible, October 1, 2004
By Rocco (Atlanta, GA)
Be aware that if you buy this product, the Dlink firmware has historically been released full of bugs that are not frequently corrected. I am looking at Linksys or other routers to replace this one because of firmware bugs when using WPA encryption.

Recently, Dlink released firmware 2.45 and then after many complaints, added a note to their site stating that it is a beta version. I would think that a company that had solid firmware would not have to go back and change a released version of firmware to beta.

Xtreme G not oso extreme., September 30, 2004
By Nemo
Bought the router because of low price and because I have the D-Link DWL-G650 wireless card. Set the router to Static Trubo mode (suppose to provide highest speed with the use of other Xtreme G compatible cards) and it did not work with the card most of the time. Changed the settings to Dynamic Turbo and everything is great. Rate it as 3 stars only because it did not work in Static Mode when it is supposed to, otherwise it is a great router. The driver version I am using is 2.42. Version 2.45 is in beta state and should be available soon, maybe there will be a fix.

Have B? Get it. Have G? Wait, September 28, 2004
By world traveler, tech junkie (SAN ANTONIO, TX United States)
I moved from B to G, from Linksys to Microsoft, almost a year ago. I was very happy with the speed enhancements, but MS's offering was weak. The WAN link would drop several times per day...very annoying. So, I went to Iraq for six months, and decided (while I was there) that I wasn't going to put up with crap that didn't work. When I got back, I purchased an entire D-Link super G system.
Great stuff. In super G mode, my laptop and HTPC seem as if they're plugged directly into the DSL pipe. When non-super G folks come over, the speed decrease is noticable, but still very acceptable.
Bottom line - If you're happy with what you've got, and it's working, keep it. If you're a B user looking to upgrade, give the super G a try; you won't be disappointed. If you're a G user already, don't bother, wait for the next great bandwidth leap.

Solid Router with Good Reliability, September 15, 2004
By Fresh Attire
I bought this a while back and have found it to be a good cornerstone of my network. I always update it to the newest firmware for the free added features and bug fixes. I find this router easy to use, easy to manage, and was easy to install.

I get good wireless coverage within my home and my USB 802.11g adapter (DWL-G122) for my laptop. I can pretty much be anywhere in my home and still get a solid connection that wont drop. I even play online games via wireless and have low pings while in a room away from the router.

Overall a good router with wireless functions to boot. Very nicely priced and more than enough features.

Poor hardwired network performance, September 14, 2004
By DesireWearLingerie (Baltimore, Md)
Bought this router because of some good reviews that I had seen for the wireless features (108)....But I also wanted to use it to connect some wired PCs to our broadband connection. After using it for a short while, the router seemed to lose the hardwired connections as if the router had rebooted..this increased in frequency to the point it became unbearable...D-link suggested flashing old firmware (but the link to the old firware is dead and the latest beta firware does not fix this problem).... Do a search on Google for "DI-624 reboot" and you will see that I am not alone with this problem. Going to return and purchase another brand.

Nowhere near my expectations, September 13, 2004
By dsmo (Suburbs of Detroit)
I bought this thing about six months ago, and while it worked out of the box, I started having trouble with it within a week. I put the router in my basement, and had one computer wired to it. I also have a laptop that I use with it occasionally when I am outside on my deck, etc. Right about the time I started having trouble, someone else set up a wireless connection in my neighborhood on a Belkin router. I now know who it was, and from this computer to the edge of their house there is at least 250 feet of open backyard. From their router, I got at least a 20% signal for several months, and I just hooked onto theirs eventually because my DI-624 was so unreliable and gave such a poor signal from my basement (2 floors below me). I returned from Germany to find that the signal I was getting from the belkin router was no longer as reliable as it had once been, so I went out and bought a DLink signal booster. Again, the product worked perfectly initially, but after two days I started having constant trouble with it. My computer would always stay connected to the booster, but the booster must've been losing its connection to the router. So today, I figure, what the hell, I better give the booster a shot as my access point. So I hook it up, and I am now getting a 20% signal, much better than the "no signal" or "3% connection quality" I was getting from my DI-624 once in a blue moon. So now, I have just disabled the DI-624's wireless capacity and am now using the $70 signal booster as an access point. Looking into the logs of the products, I learned that it is the router that is frequently dropping and screwing everything up.

My recommendation for anyone looking into this product is to look elsewhere. DLink's tech support is located in India and the people are incredibly hard to understand and the advice they give is pretty worthless.

The DLink DWL-G800AP Range Extender has worked very well for me, but I must warn you that DLink's basic US tech support office is located in India and will ultimately not help you to solve anything.

The only way I will ever buy another DLink product is if the product absolutely has to be a DLink or the router/extender will not communicate with it.

Easy setup. Excellent range., September 12, 2004
By Cynthia C. Stickney
After reading numerous reviews and looking up range data on cnet, I decided to purchase the DI-624. Setup was easy and it quickly detected all my network settings. This model supports the improve WPA security. I live in a large 2 story house and have excellent signal strength in all areas of my house. I recommend this product to all. The only improvement I could see would be adding a print server tot he unit.

    Don't blame D-Link for Windows!, September 9, 2004
By Mathematician (San Francisco)
Like many of the negative reviewers here, I too initially experienced frequent dropped connections from my Windows XP Tablet PC. Although the connection was quickly and automatically reestablished, this made it impossible to do large file transfers, etc. This was using the factory installed 2.42 firmware.

I became suspicious that D-Link was not to blame when I noticed that my two ReplayTVs were merrily making their nightly downloads via their attached Netgear WGE101 wireless bridges, and were able to stream high quality video from one to the other, and also that my children's vintage iMacs were never losing connections via their attached Linksys WET11 wireless bridges.

On my Tablet PC I therefore tried disabling the default XP setting of "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" and instead switched to using the software from the the supplier of my wireless card, in my case Intel's PROset software. I have not had a single dropped connection since!

Works OK but that is only SOMETIMES, September 9, 2004
By Cool Dude (CA United States)
Sometimes it works, sometimes it does. It works OK when it works. I went thru 2 of these and each timee my connection would either drop or my speeds would be really slow. I have no clue what the problem is. I work in IT so I tried all the troubleshooting knowledge I know before I contacted tech support = nothing. Upgraded firmware to no avail....decided to return it all and bought a Linksys: brought it home, and to my surprise, it WORKED FLAWLESSLY

Good Fast and Reliable with Wireless OR Wired, September 8, 2004
By Photographer
I use this router as the basis/backbone of my network, and I transfer a lot of large pictures back and forth from my Laptop and Desktop, and Backup network Drive.

This router has always been operating at optimum speed and I notice no down time in my Internet connection because of it.

This router was also very easy to setup, as others have said here before me. I thought I'd just make this clear so that there is an updated review with the latest info. Yes it is fast, Yes it is reliable, and Yes D-Link provides upgrades all the time, for free even!

    Not impressed, September 5, 2004
By Michael A. Walcer (The Woodlands, TX)
Seems like a good enough product - if would work. I set it up as a simple (wired) router, and got it to work. Problem is, about 80% of the time, after it's been on for awhile, I'll lose internet connection through it. Remove the router from the picture, and my internet connection is solid. Put the router back in, and it will be solid; for awhile. Then it loses connection again and may or may not resume proper operation some time later. Perplexed.

Fine if you're just using it to share an internet connection, September 2, 2004
By timinator (Irvine, CA)
The router can be configured for what Dlink calls "virtual server". But I have yet to be able to get this feature to work. Calls to support is worthless. As far as routing and wireless, I've had no issues with that. But don't purchase this if you plan on running a web server behind this box.

Recently I bougt D-Link DI-624 802.11g AirPlus Xtreme G 108 Mbps Wireless Router. Very easy to install and configure the wireless network. Definitely recommend this to others.

    Superb Product, August 31, 2004
By A. Howard
After reading a lot of different reviews and examining other wireless products, decided to purchase the DI-624. Now that I have installed it and used it - wow - this is a great product. I recommend this wireless router to anyone. It took me all of 5 minutes to install and use it. Not to mention the numerous advanced features that even a rookie wireless person such as myself can use.

Makes a good door stop... O, wait... Can't even do that right?, August 30, 2004
By Tech Guy (Chicago, IL)
First I have to say that this is by far one of the worst products I have ever dealt with (and I am an IT guy). I have worked with various vendors ranging from 3com to Cisco (including Linksys) and DLink missed every opportunity to create a return customer. I guess the best place to start is with technical support...

Tech support is quick to give up on trying to fix a problem... First I was talk about another device I bought (810 wireless bridge) which I wanted to use to connect my Xbox to my old Linksys 802.11b router/AP. After a few tries I couldn't get the two devices to connect and I contacted tech support... They were quick to discredit my idea to getting the two devices to communicate and told me to return the item. I knew these devices could communicate because they could see each other and all I needed to do was some additional configuration (which I figured out on my own). This also continued with my purchase of my 624. I would call them and they would have no idea about how to fix the problem and have me send it back (I had to pay the $10 in shipping). I only sent back the product once because the new device always had the same symptoms (I will talk about them next).

The product!

The product quickly worked out of the box, but seemed to reboot (all connections) every few hours. I was busy at the time so I just dealt with the discomfort because the G was soooo much faster! (I never did get the extreme to work...) Well 6 months later it was rebooting every few minutes and I would have to either disable/enable the wireless connection or reboot the client machine. I then tried to install the latest firmware (making sure I backed up the config file), well the router lost all configurations (and I have a lot of them) which I thought was no big deal because I had that file... Well the file did not work! Then after everything was back up the router continued to reboot every few minutes so I contacted DLink. They quickly gave me an RMA and shipped out a new unit (which had a crack in the plastic when I received it and there were no physical marks on the shipping box???). This new device continued to reboot so I installed the latest beta firmware from the site which made the problem even worse. Contacted DLink to see what the problem was and they gave me static for putting on the new firmware (which they didn't know existed) and had me bring the router back to the older firmware. My question is why put the firmware up if you don't want users to test it out to see if it fixes the problems. Anyways DLink had me return it again and then I requested my money back because I had already blown hours and hours of my time with this product and it really doesn't seem to perform... AT ALL! My request was denied (big surprise right?) and I went out and bought a Linksys router which rocks! So to upgrade from b to g I ended up spending twice the amount of money because I had to buy two routers and pay for the shipping to return the original broken router. So my advice to you is to buy only Linksys, or Netgear (which my friends seem to like). There is no reason why a company like DLink should continue to exist!

BTW this device would reboot regardless of the network load, or if there was any interference from other wireless devices running at 2.4Hhz (like phones).
