The perfect solution for wireless networking, September 19, 2005
By D. Fox
I purchased this wireless router to link my notebook and desktop computer and share my high-speed broadband connection. This product was unbelieveably simple to install and configure, and the process only took a few minutes! The signal produced by the router is excellent and can be received by my notebook virtually anywhere in a 3,000+ square foot home without sacrificing signal quality or speed of connection. I'm currently running about 2.5Mbps downstream to the router, and I don't notice any decrease in bandwidth when using multiple computers. This product is well worth the small price and a must-have for anyone interested in having a hassle-free wireless network.

    Quick and Easy Set-up, full-featured, September 15, 2005
By - gjs (Columbia, MO USA)
Very quick and easy set-up. Rich set of admin features.
I bought it to replace a much older version with failing LAN ports. Very easily switched wireless devices over to this router with minimal down time. No complications cloning MAC for use with my cable modem on the WAN port.

-10 Star
Cons:
- DHCP networking
- Problem with another 2.4Gb devices like wireless phone
- Restart the services without any apparently problem
- Problem to setting ADSL services with VERIZON
- Not connect a Linksys phone for Voip Adapter (block the device)

I make 2 firmware update and continue the problem

    It's a pain, September 11, 2005

When it works, it works fine. Otherwise, the continual dropping of its Internet connection is a royal pain. Absolutely no reason for that to happen

    Serious D-Link Problem, September 8, 2005
By WaryWirelessUser
I have nothing nice to say about this product. I only wish I had read the reviews more carefully. Obviously, most of the positive reviews are planted. Typically these reviews are 5-stars, noncritical, never use a real name and have the nerve to thank D-link by name. They are often written by reviewers that only recommend D-Link products, 5-stars of course, and strangely all their reviews are submitted on the same day.

Beware of D-Link.

Pure Crap. Don't waste your money!, September 8, 2005
By M. Baron (Orange County, CA)
I've had nothing but bad experiences with this router. I've paired it with nothing but D-link wireless NICs, including the new Pre-N notebook card. In my tiny 600sft apartment, the router drops the link frequently. Most of the time, it requires that I cycle the routers power. In addition, the latest D-Link drivers for the desktop network cards causes Windows XP to crash to the Blue Screen of Death! The router doesn't support the latest encryption technologies. And, D-Link customer service had no idea when a firmware update would be available to improve reliability or encryption.
All in all, I'm extremely dissapointed with this router. I'm planning to sell all my D-Link hardware on E-bay, and buy Linksys hardware instead.

Nice features but lots of connection drops, September 5, 2005
By Karahan Celikel
I wish I read all these reviews before buying this bad product.

I am having a lot of connection drops for both wired and wireless connections. Upgrading to the newest firmware didn't help it at all. I even think it became worse after the upgrade.

I don't write product reviews at all, but I decided to write my first review.
Just an hour ago, I tried to send a 10MB file to my friend over ICQ, and I gave it up after having 3 connection drops.

On the good side, it is easy to setup and it comes with some good features like MAC cloning, firewall etc.

I tried to set a DMZ to one of my machines without much luck.

I'm sending it back.

FALSE CABLE DISCONNECT REPORT, August 29, 2005
By M. Smith (Charlotte, NC)
Set-up is really easy with Road Runner broadband ISP. The Technical Service Department is easy to reach (average hold time less than 10 minutes), easy to understand and generally helpful.
A problem with my unit was that it would report that a cable was disconnected on each of 2 attached PCs and a wireless notebook. No cables were disconnected. This would temporarily 'disconnect' the web stie (or chat room as AIM). Tech service suggested some PC setting changes but that did not resolve the problem. D-Link is sending a replacement unit. To get faster turn-around, you must give your Credit Card number (and pay for expedited delivery if you want that). They freeze the amount until they get the defective unit back. I haven't gotten the replacement yet.

    Caveat usage, August 26, 2005
By Marshal Berthier (Colorado USA)
Like the previous reviewer, I am finding lots of incompabilities between vendors. My D-L 624 works just peachy with the built-in in my wife's Dell, and likes my Proxim Orinoco. It hates my son's Linksys when any form of encryption is enabled, but with WEP off handles it fairly well. For work I coupled the D-Link 624 with the 650 card and it works just fine. I had my son buy a Linksys card because the router that he's sharing at school is a Linksys, but which refused to recognize the Proxim card that works with my D-Link. I think all of this indicates just how imature this technology is. It probably ain't you if it doesn't work.

Also, DLink does a pretty good job of updating their firmware, and you probably want to take the time to update (easy, just follow the instructions) before you start loading MACs and enabling things (they don't recommend you import your old settings after you flash the bios).

This is the worst router of all time, August 26, 2005
By zuiko
This is a horrible device. I have personal experience with 2 of this model and they are both defective in different ways. One drops network connections (on the wired switch portion even... how hard is it to get a wired switch right?) on a fairly regular basis for no explicable reason only to reconnect a fraction of a second later. The other has a wireless radio that works for about an hour or two then stops working and the router needs to be reset in order to get it working again (for another hour or two).

This is literally the worst networking device I have ever used, and that goes back to the old days of 10base2. You would be better off making your own router out of gum wrappers and paper clips. It would be at least as reliable.

    D-Link DI-624 Wireless Cable/DSL Router, 4-Port Switch, 802.11g, 108Mbps, August 20, 2005
By Mark E. Askren (Riverside, CA USA)
The router works like a charm. Although I had some initial trouble connecting it up, which required a call to D-Link, the router has worked perfectly ever since. I was a little worried because the walls in the house are made of concrete, not wallboard, but the signal has worked wonderfully through all of them.

Great for a newbie wifi user, August 16, 2005
By cmp (Merrimack, NH USA)
I bought this router in conjunction with a new notebook that is my first. It's meant to be a desktop replacement, so I still only have one computer hooked up. This router works great as an access point/wi-fi router! Even for someone with no experience, I was hooked up within 10 minutes out of the box. The software has a nice easy connection wizard. The signal is strong all through my 2 story house. I know I'm not using it to its full potential, but I highly recommend it for ease of use!

Good router but one big problem, August 7, 2005
By Monty (Washington State)
This is a great router for the most part as the other reviews will tell you, but it has one big flaw: It can't coexist with 2.4GHz cordless phones. As soon as me or my neighbor pick up the phone, its dead. Cycle the power and click repair on the network connections. Extremely annoying as I went through two of these before I realized this was the problem. Unless you are sure no one in your area has a 2.4GHz device, avoid this router.

    Improved, August 2, 2005
By HudNNWFL (Ft. Walton Bch, FL USA)
This latest version of D-Link's Wireless Router is a significant improvement from the 802.11b version. Better range and while it is also limited by the speed of the internet connection, speed between wireless users and the router is much improved and more reliable.

Not only does this product deliver all that is advertised but the service from D-Link is without a doubt the best in the high tech industry. Every vendor should take notice.

Not up an running yet!!!, July 22, 2005
By KM (Texas)
I purchased this product for my laptop and had full intentions of linking my laptop to my home network, but...hasn't happened yet.

Why? It's not for lack of trying. I guess it's too complicated for me to get resolved right away and I need all my computer running.

I am running XP Pro on all computers. My desktop models are using a salite to connect to the internet and are using one as a host computer and the other links to the internet through the host. My desktops are networked to retrieve files and share printers.

When I followed the instructions for the D-link-I thought it would be a snap, but...NO!

I linked the cable from the modem to the wireless unit to calibrate the d-link, but it must not have callibrated, because I could not go any farther.

When I linked my cable from my existing router to the laptop-on-line to internet immediately (forgot to check about file sharing, oops!)

Since I did not want the inconvience of tripping over cables for my laptop, I again tried to get the wireless to work.

Did a restore point on my desktop, just incas the network wizard didn't solve the issue. Sure enough it didn't and it messed up my network and internet connection to the other desktop.

Resolved that by doing restores on both desktops-but still no wireless unit working. Guess I'm going to have to spend some serious time figuring out how this is to work.

I love XP Pro-it's like Windows 95 was to Windows 3.1 when it came out, but....I need more than the wizard has to offer to get my whole system operating efficeintly.

I've have debated over returning the unit and not going wireless for my laptop, but that doesn't make much sense.

Easy Setup for DI-624 - False Advertising Concerning Security is Only Drawback, July 20, 2005
By Deaners (Northern California)
I just received my wireless router yesterday (D-Link DI-624). I bought this router to replace my old Netgear MR814 which wasn't working well with my wife's iBook. The setup was extremely easy from my older router to the new one. Didn't have any problems connecting to the internet. Great router for the price is one reason I bought this router as well as the rave reviews I read. I really like the Administrator web page you use to set up the router.

My old security contingency for my last router was to simply take off the antenna so no one could get on to my connection. I emailed tech support concerning the option to turn off the radio on the D-Link router and I got a quick response from a rep who told me there was an option to turn off the radio which is wonderful. Now there is the issue of security when the radio is transmitting. I've read countless articles about how easy it is to crack WEP or WPA and so I figured that wasn't an option on this router. A friend of mine told me about AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) which the federal government is implementing to protect their classified information. I guess it's supposed to be a lot more secure than the previous standard. And so when I read this in the product detail on D-Link's website, "The DI-624 is also capable of supporting the government-grade AES encryption and upcoming 802.11i standards" I immediately jumped on board and bought one. So when I contacted D-Link to find out how I can implement AES the response I got from D-Link was that currently the firmware for this hardware didn't support AES but to check back another time. False advertisement? Poorly timed advertisement? I'm a little disappointed. I've considered returning this unit and getting a different one by a different manufacturer. It boggles my mind why a manufacturer would promise one thing and not come through. If you're not overly concerned about security then this would be a great router. I highly recommend it. If you are overly concerned then I suggest buying a router that is AES compliant already.

Easy to fail, July 14, 2005
By Riccardo Audano (Chiavari, Italy)
Yes, this wireless router is easy to install and makes a nice combo with DWL-G650 card, and it looks perfect for a small home wireless network. It has only one slight problem: it keeps losing my internet connection (and please note the modem it works with is a D-Link too I expected the combo to work flawlessly). The router will start fine and then lose connection after an hour or so. Now, ease of use is great, but isn't the main job of a router to keep you connected? Given D-Link good reputation I was really surprised to see they create such low quality products.

It really does work well, July 13, 2005
By L. Barrett (Delaware)
I read the negative comments regarding re-booting and line dropping, and naturally had concerns, however in the end decided to buy this product. And it really does work well. I have had it running for over a month now with 4 wired computers and one wireless laptop, and it has never failed. The cable dropped out one day, but when it came back up, I did not have to re-boot the router. Installation was surprisingly easy- truely plug and play. This was the first time I installed a wireless card or router, and was pleasantly surprised when it all worked on the first try without any headaches. The wireless range seems to be pretty good too- the router is located in a corner room on the second floor, and I still get good reception in the basement opposite corner, as well as everywhere else in my 3500 sqft colonial-style house. So, while I'm not gonna argue with the folks who say there are problems, I do want to go on record here and let you know that I have not experienced any problems at all with this product.

Reliable & works as expected. A keeper in our house., July 9, 2005

We've owned the DI-624 for over a year- rev_c version with one antenna. The installation was easy w/the exception that setting up advanced security wasn't as easy as I'd liked. (would give 4 1/2 stars if I could) Unit is hard wired to Motorola cable modem. It is used with 2 wired pcs and 2 Centrino-equipped IBM laptops. Both laptops are using their internal mini pc adapters and built-in antennas. One is on 11g (54Mbps) standard and the other @ 11b (11Mbps). Both laptops routinely operate over 40 ft. from the router, through walls and floors.

In the year's time this device has worked flawlessly. Even with "low" signal strength on the 11b from our basement, internet speed is usually strong at 10Mbps. The other laptop routinely operates at 54mbps at opposite end of our house. Once I pulled out the manual, it was very easy to add a new laptop to the security configuration settings. Have had no experience working with the company's support desk. Never have any connection problems with the wired pcs.

With respect to wireless connection dropouts, usual cause at our house comes from use of portable phones which operate at same radio frequency. When phones are hung up, wireless connection reestablishes itself quickly without fuss. Inconvenient, but we work around it by using our cell phones or wired phones more frequently. Have reviewed changing portable phones w/different frequency, but are not seeing increased reliability to warrant the purchase. Generally, product requires no attention (better than our electric toaster!), we're pleased with the date throughput and would not hesitate to buy this product again.
