Good router but one big problem, August 7, 2005
By Monty (Washington State)
This is a great router for the most part as the other reviews will tell you, but it has one big flaw: It can't coexist with 2.4GHz cordless phones. As soon as me or my neighbor pick up the phone, its dead. Cycle the power and click repair on the network connections. Extremely annoying as I went through two of these before I realized this was the problem. Unless you are sure no one in your area has a 2.4GHz device, avoid this router.

    Improved, August 2, 2005
By HudNNWFL (Ft. Walton Bch, FL USA)
This latest version of D-Link's Wireless Router is a significant improvement from the 802.11b version. Better range and while it is also limited by the speed of the internet connection, speed between wireless users and the router is much improved and more reliable.

Not only does this product deliver all that is advertised but the service from D-Link is without a doubt the best in the high tech industry. Every vendor should take notice.

Not up an running yet!!!, July 22, 2005
By KM (Texas)
I purchased this product for my laptop and had full intentions of linking my laptop to my home network, but...hasn't happened yet.

Why? It's not for lack of trying. I guess it's too complicated for me to get resolved right away and I need all my computer running.

I am running XP Pro on all computers. My desktop models are using a salite to connect to the internet and are using one as a host computer and the other links to the internet through the host. My desktops are networked to retrieve files and share printers.

When I followed the instructions for the D-link-I thought it would be a snap, but...NO!

I linked the cable from the modem to the wireless unit to calibrate the d-link, but it must not have callibrated, because I could not go any farther.

When I linked my cable from my existing router to the laptop-on-line to internet immediately (forgot to check about file sharing, oops!)

Since I did not want the inconvience of tripping over cables for my laptop, I again tried to get the wireless to work.

Did a restore point on my desktop, just incas the network wizard didn't solve the issue. Sure enough it didn't and it messed up my network and internet connection to the other desktop.

Resolved that by doing restores on both desktops-but still no wireless unit working. Guess I'm going to have to spend some serious time figuring out how this is to work.

I love XP Pro-it's like Windows 95 was to Windows 3.1 when it came out, but....I need more than the wizard has to offer to get my whole system operating efficeintly.

I've have debated over returning the unit and not going wireless for my laptop, but that doesn't make much sense.

Easy Setup for DI-624 - False Advertising Concerning Security is Only Drawback, July 20, 2005
By Deaners (Northern California)
I just received my wireless router yesterday (D-Link DI-624). I bought this router to replace my old Netgear MR814 which wasn't working well with my wife's iBook. The setup was extremely easy from my older router to the new one. Didn't have any problems connecting to the internet. Great router for the price is one reason I bought this router as well as the rave reviews I read. I really like the Administrator web page you use to set up the router.

My old security contingency for my last router was to simply take off the antenna so no one could get on to my connection. I emailed tech support concerning the option to turn off the radio on the D-Link router and I got a quick response from a rep who told me there was an option to turn off the radio which is wonderful. Now there is the issue of security when the radio is transmitting. I've read countless articles about how easy it is to crack WEP or WPA and so I figured that wasn't an option on this router. A friend of mine told me about AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) which the federal government is implementing to protect their classified information. I guess it's supposed to be a lot more secure than the previous standard. And so when I read this in the product detail on D-Link's website, "The DI-624 is also capable of supporting the government-grade AES encryption and upcoming 802.11i standards" I immediately jumped on board and bought one. So when I contacted D-Link to find out how I can implement AES the response I got from D-Link was that currently the firmware for this hardware didn't support AES but to check back another time. False advertisement? Poorly timed advertisement? I'm a little disappointed. I've considered returning this unit and getting a different one by a different manufacturer. It boggles my mind why a manufacturer would promise one thing and not come through. If you're not overly concerned about security then this would be a great router. I highly recommend it. If you are overly concerned then I suggest buying a router that is AES compliant already.

Easy to fail, July 14, 2005
By Riccardo Audano (Chiavari, Italy)
Yes, this wireless router is easy to install and makes a nice combo with DWL-G650 card, and it looks perfect for a small home wireless network. It has only one slight problem: it keeps losing my internet connection (and please note the modem it works with is a D-Link too I expected the combo to work flawlessly). The router will start fine and then lose connection after an hour or so. Now, ease of use is great, but isn't the main job of a router to keep you connected? Given D-Link good reputation I was really surprised to see they create such low quality products.

It really does work well, July 13, 2005
By L. Barrett (Delaware)
I read the negative comments regarding re-booting and line dropping, and naturally had concerns, however in the end decided to buy this product. And it really does work well. I have had it running for over a month now with 4 wired computers and one wireless laptop, and it has never failed. The cable dropped out one day, but when it came back up, I did not have to re-boot the router. Installation was surprisingly easy- truely plug and play. This was the first time I installed a wireless card or router, and was pleasantly surprised when it all worked on the first try without any headaches. The wireless range seems to be pretty good too- the router is located in a corner room on the second floor, and I still get good reception in the basement opposite corner, as well as everywhere else in my 3500 sqft colonial-style house. So, while I'm not gonna argue with the folks who say there are problems, I do want to go on record here and let you know that I have not experienced any problems at all with this product.

Reliable & works as expected. A keeper in our house., July 9, 2005
By D. Plante
We've owned the DI-624 for over a year- rev_c version with one antenna. The installation was easy w/the exception that setting up advanced security wasn't as easy as I'd liked. (would give 4 1/2 stars if I could) Unit is hard wired to Motorola cable modem. It is used with 2 wired pcs and 2 Centrino-equipped IBM laptops. Both laptops are using their internal mini pc adapters and built-in antennas. One is on 11g (54Mbps) standard and the other @ 11b (11Mbps). Both laptops routinely operate over 40 ft. from the router, through walls and floors.

In the year's time this device has worked flawlessly. Even with "low" signal strength on the 11b from our basement, internet speed is usually strong at 10Mbps. The other laptop routinely operates at 54mbps at opposite end of our house. Once I pulled out the manual, it was very easy to add a new laptop to the security configuration settings. Have had no experience working with the company's support desk. Never have any connection problems with the wired pcs.

With respect to wireless connection dropouts, usual cause at our house comes from use of portable phones which operate at same radio frequency. When phones are hung up, wireless connection reestablishes itself quickly without fuss. Inconvenient, but we work around it by using our cell phones or wired phones more frequently. Have reviewed changing portable phones w/different frequency, but are not seeing increased reliability to warrant the purchase. Generally, product requires no attention (better than our electric toaster!), we're pleased with the date throughput and would not hesitate to buy this product again.

It is a very good 802.11g/b router, July 8, 2005
By cdljl (Los Altos, CA)
I have used DI-624 rev. C router with DSL to talk to my computers with standard 802.11g and 802.11b cards and I don't have 2.4GHz phones at home. It is compatible with VPN I need to connect to my company's computers. It is my 3rd router and 2nd wireless one. It is very easy to setup and very reliable. I have used it for one year without any problem. It also gives me better range comparing to my first wireless router - Linksys 802.11b router. I don't have any information regarding 108Mbps.

easy to use, but plauged with problems, July 5, 2005
By craig (berlin, germany)
This router is easy to set up and easy to use, but the constant line-dropping, the constant rebooting and the wireless rejections cause endless frustrations.
Despite all the evidence against this product (a google search for 'PADT TAG' - the line-dropping problem - lists d-link routers in the first 14 finds!!!), the D-Link company *flat-out* denies any fault or problem with their creations.
Another classic case of the marketing department running the technical support!

Persistent rebooting is a real nightmare, July 3, 2005
By Severian (Australia)
I bought this product as part of a package with a D-Link 108 pci card. It was easy to set up, and appeared to work well until it began regularly rebooting. A lot of people have had this problem and I had to search for a solution. I tried firmware updates and disabling features, but it didn't help.

This router is a bit dodgy. I did eventually find what I believe is a solution to the rebooting problem (...)that is working for me so far. But, all in all it has been a very disappointing experience. There is an obvious disparity between its excellent reviews such as on CNet and those numerous reviews by users having experienced problems with the device. This router has a lot of features, which attracted me to it in the first place, but isn't worth the trouble.

Drops connection and reboots, June 30, 2005
By oeaguirre (Caracas, Venezuela)
I was very happy when I changed my DI-804, which used to work very well for about 4 years when it started to 'behave' strangelly .. after 4 year, it was really paid off, so I desided to move forward with dlink again and it seemed that 624 was the best choice. From the first day it started dropping the connection "Network connection lost" ... "Network connection 100 MB full restored" .. sometimes it rebooted "too hard" or so frequently that windoze cannot obtain the connection again, so, I ended up with no connection at all ... it did this up to 5 times an hour. After I upgraded the firmware and the problem persisted, I realized I had to cry for help ... I called the DLINK "support" center and after an hour of idiotic questions (not related with product/problem) and several calls ("you test that and call again") to be received by another tech which of course did not know nothing about the case and I had to tell the story all over again .. I returned it .. that was 6 months ago, it is again dropping the connections, loosing the connection.

I can see there is no firmware for the last 6 or 8 months so
they seem not to be aware of any problems with these units
whatsoever.... hence I suppose I'll get an identical unit, with
the same problems ...

I'll read some pcmag/pcworld reviews to try and choose a working
unit ...

UPDATE:
I have to update this review and appologize as the unit was not the one that was failing but was my tungsten, this router is still dropping the connection but the wireless is working ok.
I have just upgraded the firmware to 2.70 and it seems like the router is more stable now, or maybe it's just that my 2.4GHz phone is broken and is now not interfering with the wifi radio?
I'll tell that when I get another 2.4GHz phone ...

I did not find a way to update the stars, but I'd give it 3 by now. It is still a good piece of hardware.

    I am a happy networker, June 29, 2005
By SushiLover (Linthicum Md)
I needed to set up a home network since I was going to have to VPN to the office from home. I am in the IT field but never set up a wireless network. They were offering the D-Link set up with a number of rebates so I thought I would give it a shot. Everyone says Link Sys is the way but I thought for the price it was worth the risk. The system is very reliable and it works. Speed is really great. I have a cable connection and use the Motorola Surfboard modem connected to my D-link. The initial set up is in my sons room and I have the wireless USB adaptor hooked to my PC. I set it all up with the included booklet and cd. The only con is if you are very PC illiterate it would help to have someone that knows PC connections to assist you. I would buy it again.

Good but lots of problens, June 23, 2005
By JBett (Brazil)
I recently brought a DI-624 Rev C. In the begining it worked greatly. However, after 2 days, it became to show instabillities.

I used to use it as a PPPoE to conect to my broad band and sometimes I experience some dropping in the WAN conection and them problens to reconect. To bypass this dificulty I have to set up my modem to conect the internet and them set the DI-624 to conect my modem...

Even after I do this procedure, the problem persists but now I do not have trouble to reconect the internet since the moden does not disconect.

Thus, I do not recommend this product wile these problens continue to persist.

Very very poor customer support, June 20, 2005
By McNair (Enschede)
I was very disappointed by the way the technical support person handled my call. First five minutes into the call, he never asked me my problem / difficulties. He kept on asking my bio and more and more details about every thing about and around the router! I had tried to explain to him that I have a very simple question to ask, but he showed no interest in listening to me. The product may be good. But if you expect a decent support from the manufacturer, this is definitely not the product you should buy. I returned it the next day and bought a Linksys and I am very much satisfied with it.

Rock Solid Router XtremeG 108Mbps., June 4, 2005
By meggabitz (New England)
Ok, let me first start off with what the router DOESN'T do. It doesn't reboot spontaneously, nor does it drop my WAN connection. This router is replacing my old DI-614+, wireless b router. I have the rev_C router with a single antenna, using firmware 2.50. I have a wireless Tivo, 2 wireless laptops (one using b, another using XtremeG 108Mbps), and 3 hardwired workstations. I did have an issue while transmitting larger files via wireless, all other connections would get little to no bandwidth on the WAN port. I just changed the preamble from short to long and presto, back to normal. Now, about this 108Mbps, guess what... you will never get 108Mbps for a sustained amount of time. You might get a single packet in a million that might travel at that speed. Regardless, the g protocol is more than enough to play games and transmit Tivo movies.
Why did I give it only 4 stars... Well, my wireless issue took me a while to figure out and D-Link's tech support was no help. So, I have to take the 5th star away. I am a D-Link fan, but this is an unbiased posting.
Now about the router feature, it has a very easy to use Firewall interface, and same goes with the wireless settings. You can navigate easily and the parental controls are pefect for me since I have a 12yr old. I can limit his Internet access via his MAC address by setting the times to allow. This rev_C has a cable testing feature, not really all that necessary, but still handy for those who make their own cables. Firmware 2.50 does not support Xbox live from what I read, but I haven't tested. If you get this, you will not be disappointed. If you are one of those people who are getting the WAN reboot issue, change your WAN port to 10Mbps. That will resolve many of the problems.

A Top of the Line Wireless Router - Highly Recommended!, May 26, 2005
By Samuel Ings
This router seems to stick it's head everywhere I've been. Friends houses, small businesses, parents house, all over the Internet, etc. I keep hearing this name mentioned or talked about in a forum somewhere. It's kind of creepy. Anyhow, after seeing the way this product performs at other people's houses/businesses I decided to get one for myself.

I was smiling when I found out it actually does a good job of being a firewall, a wireless access point, a 4 port switch, and even some parental control features for the Internet. Very nice features this thing packs inside it's box. Heck even the power cord is color coded so that you know blue goes with blue. Very NICE!

Overall I'd have to say this router is a pleasure to work with. Easy to configure, simple in it's setup, yet has many features you can get "hardcore" with. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good router/firewall/wireless access point with more options than normal.

SURPRISE! It Works!, May 17, 2005
By Dave Green (New Jersey)
I don't see why D-Link could keep selling all of these (on of their most popular products from what I hear) and have them all not working. I see so many complaints, but I can't say I sympathize with any of them. My 624 router works great, and always has.

I basically followed the instructions when setting it up, and even opened some ports so my son and I can play some online games while stil being protected. The wireless works great and is fast enough for gaming with my laptop.

A Well Priced and Feature Rich Wireless Router, May 12, 2005
By Theo A. (Columbus, OH)
I've had this router for about 4 months now and it has never caused me problems. I've had my Internet connection go out, maybe 3-4 times in the past 4 months from what I can remember, and the only thing I had to do to restart it was unplug my cable modem and plug it back in again. Very simple, and obviously not the router's fault.

Anyhow the features this wireless router has is well enough for most anyone looking for a fast, secure, and easy to use router/firewall/accesspoint. You can even have a URL filter and filter out certain sites at a router level. Very useful for advertisement sites.
