Very Satisfied...., April 5, 2002
By Eric Fawcett (Cary, NC United States)
My setup is as follows; 713P connected to a DSL Ethernet Modem (Alcatel) with two Dlink DWL-650 Wireless PCMCIA Network Adapters (one in a WinME Laptop, the other Win98). I have no "wired" PC connection to the 713P only wireless via the DWL-650's.I had the 713P and both laptops up running within an hour, the 713P pretty much worked out of the box, requiring only a couple of configuration changes which were clearly covered in the installation instructions. Both laptops have no problem accessing the internet connection and the wireless range is good, with the 713P on the first floor and one of the laptops on the third floor. I hooked my HP printer to the parallel port on the back of the 713P, installed the print server software on my two laptops and I was printing from all over the house! The print server worked like a champ. I had one issue; configuring the 713P is web-based, you point the browser to the 713P ip address and a webpage is presented. Any changes require a "save" and then a "warm restart" of the router via the web page. When I perform the router warm restart, I lose my wireless connection to the 713P and it doesn't reestablish unless I manually unplug power from the 713P and plug it back in. After that my wireless connection is restored and the changes I made are there. I called Dlink Tech Support, first level was friendly but had me trying some pretty elementary stuff that I knew wouldn't help. After an hour I was escalated to second level support. Second level told me I had to make configuration changes from a "wired" connection, I don't buy it... But I make so few changes to the 713P configuration that it's not a huge hassle and not worth knocking the product. Overall I'm very satisfied, the network is stable, the range is good and I'm happy with my decision.

Great Product, Worked right out of the box, April 4, 2002
By unknown
... My cable company uses the MAC id to allow internet access. Once I clone the MAC ID everything started working for me. Now I can take my laptop and work where ever I want in my House. However after using tis for more than 4 months I have noticed the wireless signal strength is going down when i use my cordless phone, panasonic 2.4 . Sometimes I don't get any signal while using my phone.

Looks great on paper, but failed to deliver, April 2, 2002
By unknown
I found the router of my dreams - wireless, 3 ports, plus a print server, plus a $50 rebate. This was one of those things that sounded too good to be true - unfortunately, it was. When I first fired it up, everything ran great - wired and wireless (D-link DWL 120 and Orinoco Gold PC card). I was very excited and dismantled my existing Linksys router and add-on hub. My mistake b/c 30 minutes later, the router lost its wireless signal. The wired signal was solid though. I thought maybe it was a fluke so I unplugged it and replugged it and everything came back up.... this time only for 5 minutes!! ... I fought with it for several hours until giving up...

Extremely difficult to configure, April 2, 2002
By unknown
I am very disappointed in this product. For a novice user it is extremely difficult to configure. I have a windows 98 desktop and it couldn't detect the router. I couldn't upgrade the firmware like others said cause it wouldn't even detect it. The windows xp laptop did detect the router but I couldn't get it to work because the product came defective. I spend four days trying to install it and an hour with the D-Link tech support. Their magical formula was hold the reset button for 5 sec, and while holding it unplug the power cord for another 5 sec. Still holding the reset button, plug the power cord back in and wait another 5 sec. It didn't work for me cause they determined my router had defective ports but you can give it a try. However, I did find the tech support nice and helpful, unlike what the other reviews stated. For AT&T cable modem users, you must register the router's MAC address with AT&T to work.

Quick and Easy, March 30, 2002
By jsommerset (Snohomish, WA USA)
I am writing this review now from my couch, compared to my den where I used to have to sit with my laptop. I was able to install this product with the quick steps in a matter of minutes and it was up and running. It is plenty fast for me to surf the web, even if my signal strength drops down to 40%, it is still fine. The printer port was a nice bonus and I chose this product over many others because of the printer port. Simple and easy to use, works great!

Works like a charm (except for wireless), March 29, 2002
By tomjez (Port Orchard, WA USA)
Initially, everything seemed to work fine. The firmware got upgraded and over the next several days. I fiddled with different variables trying to evaluate and optimize the performance. The unit would boot and connect at 11Mbs then over time the connection would degrade to 1Mbs. I was only 20 feet from the router! The radio seemed to drift and lose signal strength. Not being sure if it was my Netgear card in the laptop, or the router, I picked up the Linksys router to troubleshoot with. Unlike, the D-Link product, my range is better and the connection quality seems consistent at 11Mbs. All indications are that the D-Link transmitter is flaky. Take a guess which one is going back. It's a shame, because the D-Link product had a great price-point and feature set, but the number one feature, wireless, just didn't make the cut. Tom

Wired worked great but wireless a lemon, March 29, 2002
By unknown
I had the wired setup of this router working in 10 minutes. The print server worked well too. But I could not get the wireless to work. After talking with three different D-link support reps all trying different network configurations for a total time of 8 hrs I finally followed the suggestion of the last rep and send the unit back. ...

Easy setup combined with great signal strength, March 28, 2002
By matp (PA USA)
First of all let me start by saying I have never written a review at this website. But after buying this router I felt compelled to sing it's praises. After receiving the box from the UPS it took all of 5 minutes to setup this device. 4 of those minutes were spent taking the device out of the box and reading the instructions. As far as I am concerned, setup is fool proof. Secondly, the signal strength is perfect. The router is in my basement. I'm writing this review from the second floor. The signal strength is well over 80%. My previously purchased Linksys never gave me more than 40% when I was on the same floor!! I'm using a Linksys PC-card adaptor by the way. This device is perfect!!!

Amazingly good, March 28, 2002
By sure (Alameda, CA United States)
This is a great product for a great price... It worked right out of the box as I expected it to. The only tricky part in the install is to configure a static IP address on the machine used to configure this, but if you owned a wired broadband gateway before(like me) you would know this like the palm of your hand. I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop connected and I can watch streaming movies on all at the same time. I am yet to test out the print server feature, but I would have paid the same amount of money without it too. BTW all my cards are D-links (2x DWL-500, 1x DWL-650)

Wirless networking SHOULD be easy! Green/Silver 713p, March 28, 2002
By unknown
I recieved a defective 713p. Router works wired, not wireless. VERY POOR documentation included with product and on Web site, no excuse for the later. L1 tech support is not trained, first guy told me that Dlink cards have known issues w/win2000, second guy could not tell me if problem was card or router. Neither could escalate me to Level 2 support, they took my contact info and told me to wait 2-3 days for Level 2 to contact me. I finally got hold L2 rep who knew what he was doing 7 days later L2 rep calls me from original call(s)Dlink=No Mac Support : (

The router works great except wireless part!, March 26, 2002
By theoverminds (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA United States)
... The router looks very stylish and is well designed. I have no problem setting up my cable connection on this router after some messing around. The wired sharing parts works great, however I couldn't get my IBM Wireless Lan Card to work this router. No matter how I changed the setting, the wireless connection wouldn't work. Others have these problems too in some of previous review. So I decided to get another SMC Baaracade wireless router from Compusa since it's on sale. After all the same setup, I turn on my laptop, my msn messenger immediatly signed on with 11meg connection. So if you can get wireless part to work, this is sure a nice router.

Very satisfied except for an issue with running ftp server, March 25, 2002
By joshzhao (Newark, California United States)
Overall, I am very satisfied with this product. It has been working uninterrupted for a week now. It doesn't get very warm either. Oh, yes, I like the style and color of the new version of the product I received too.The setup wasn't as easy as I had expected. I noticed two problems: one is that the quick start guide pretty much assumes you are doing the setup on a Windows 9x machine by instructing you to run "winipcfg" in configuring an IP address. Users that do setup from a Windows 2000 machine, be aware. The equivalent command is "ipconfig". The other problem is in "MAC Address Control" configuration. I wanted to assign a specific IP address to my desktop computer for port forwarding so that I can run that computer as a server. I filled in MAC address to IP address mapping in the table, but it didn't work. I later realized that I forgot to tick the "MAC address control enabled" box in the window. With due fairness, the manual does mention that we need to tick this box in order to use any feature in that window. But the UI can be more user-friendly. Why not grey out the other input fields in the window if this mater box isn't enabled? It's too easy to overlook. It took me about 45 minutes from opening the box to getting my laptop connected to the Internet wirelessly, with some time wasted on fixing the second problem mentioned above. It took me less than 10 minutes to get the printer server working with my Epson 880, though. The only shortcoming I've noticed in operation so far is with its ability to run an ftp server on my computer behind the box. My ftp server can't service ftp client from outside that uses passive mode due to the limitation of the NAT functionality on this box. Other brands may have this same problem too. Since not many people need to run their own ftp servers, I won't be surprised if this feature is more widely ignored. I rated this product 4 instead of 5 because this feature is important to me :-(

Couldn't be easier!!!, March 24, 2002
By unknown
After reading the latest reviews, I was a little apprehensive about setting this up. It was the most painless installation I have ever done - I'm just a regular computer user. I turned off my computer and cable modem(Comcast), hooked up the router to the cable modem and my computer to the router, turned on my computer and followed the IP instructions in the documentation (basically just did a release/renew all).Voila it worked! Now for the cool part. I bought the DWL 120 usb adapter to share between my laptop and another desktop upstairs. Installed the files from the CD, plugged in the adaptor, restarted and I am now typing this from my laptop in another room. It was way too easy! I also did the install on the desktop upstairs and the reception is very good. Haven't tried any other features such as networking a printer or even sharing files, but I am now surfing from every room in my house.

Printer Port is great, March 23, 2002
By unknown
Just got this router, and was up and running in less than 6 minutes. In this time, I connected 3 machines, one running Win2000 Pro, one running Win Me and one running XP Pro (with the wireless card). Also installed the printer port on all the 3 machines (there was no option to install for XP but I used the NT/2000 option and it worked out of the box). I was able to get rid of a number of printer cables and a switch box. The reasons for not giving 5 stars: cursory documentation. Unclear explanation of how to create the encryption keys for WEP.

Works As Promised, March 23, 2002
By wifi/hifi guy (Sands Point, NY USA)
After downloading the XP drivers for the printer server, the printer worked in both wired and wireless (DWL-120 USB) PCs, XP- and ME-based. The DMZ enabled feature did allow netmeeting and video-conferencing to go through. Speed is great and range is adequate for a 100' wide house. The tech reps were responsive and helpful. At 8:00 pm EST they were still there, contrary to some other reviews. Excellent product.

Don't waste your time, March 23, 2002
By Craig Fosnock (Raleigh, North Carolina United States)
Product seems to be OK but if you run into any trouble forget about it. D-link tech support is clueless. They can't speak English, and they have no knowledge of their own products much less basic networking. I bought a D-Link wireless USB NIC along with this product. Tech support could not even tell me what one of the two products was at fault. I'm returning both items and I'm getting a Linksys router and NIC. You get what you pay for, and I recommend you pay a little extra for another wireless brand.

Incredible Range, simple setup, March 22, 2002
By Ken Carson (Eugene, OR USA)
The DI-713P was simple to setup. Pretty much it was plug it in and go. The only trouble I had was getting it to talk with my DSL modem, but I think that was more the fault of my modem. Once I switched the WAN connection to a static IP address, it worked fine. The range is incredible. My laptop can connect anywhere in my 2 story 1600 sq. ft. house. I even took it outside and can reach the network anywhere on my property and even by my neighbors house! I am very impressed with its range.

D-Link need improve their product quality, March 22, 2002
By fsun93 (Allen, TX United States)
Bought a D-LINK wireless router and D-LINK USB adapter. The hard wired LAN works but the wireless adapter can't connect to the router. After hanging on the phone with D-LINK support people for whole night, finally I gave up. I borrowed an Efficient Networks router to test the USB adapter, it works fine. Good luck to the people who want to buy D-LINK product. If works, go to buy lottery ticket.

Sleek Unit - Fast Wireless, March 22, 2002
By wifi/hifi guy (Sands Point, NY USA)
The unit is very easy to install via the web browser, accessing the router's own setup software (there is nothing to install for the router, except for the printer server!) My configuration is for 1 wired XP pc, and 3 wireless DWL-120 USB adapter-connected ME pc's. The wired setup was a breeze with internet connection 10 minutes into my install at a fast 1.6 Mbp/sec communication speed. However, the quick install guide does not have a section for XP machines (a shortcoming). The DWL-120 install was also very easy -- simply load the driver and then connect the USB plug. I got 50%-90% signal strength from 70' away. The USB communication speed was decidedly lower (220Kbp/sec). I wonder if this could be improved with a PCI card (DWL-500), but I prefer the portability of USB. The manuals were fine for ME-based pc's in both router and adapter. Now for the shortcoming -- the printer driver provided on the CDROM does not work for XP pc's. You have to go to the Dlink website to download that driver and read the FAQ for steps to install those drivers. My NEC-870 laser printer is still trying to work with the XP pc (work in progress). The ME-based pc, however loaded up the DI-713 drivers fine and printed to my laser sucessfully. The firewall also disabled my voice chat and netmeeting AV functionalities. This is a heavy price to pay for shared broadband pipeline. The tech rep told me to enable the DMV feature in the router setup advanced settings to bring down the firewall (I would still be protected by Norton's Internet Security fire wall, I hope). That gave me limited voice but no video (work in progress). Overall, I give it a 4, not 5 due to the above shortcomings. They should have XP drivers on the CDROMs by now, it need not be that tedious. That done, the DI-713/DWL-120 combo would be a fantastic setup.
