hard install, bad customer service, July 27, 2008
By user (Gaithersburg, MD United States)
DSM 750 is for one only high bandwidth links. Wireless G did not work with the plasma, the movies were choppy. Should work well with wireline links. It was hard to configure with a wireless router due to firewall issues in with media center PC. Over all not happy at all after wasting so much time this product is bad

Ordered this product, the first one I received did not work out of the box. The second one I received worked ok, but did not play VOB files through media center. I know it doesn't say it supports those, but I contacted tech support and they said it would.

I also tried out the Linksys Media Center Extender and found the D-link 750 to be significantly faster.

    Nothing Special, July 24, 2008

This problem with this unit is that it gives you a taste as to what a good extender could be but then leaves you hanging. As an extender it cannot perform all the functions of MCE that you can do on the PC. For example third party software "Mynetfilx". Also I never had any luck with using the unit wirelessly. It connected but even near the router (D-Link Gamerlounge wireless n) it didn't stream content successfuly. On the positive side if hooked up to ethernet the functions that it does perform, it does well without hangups, skips etc.

If you want to use Windows MCE I strongly recommend that you bite the bullet and get an HTPC. If you don't want to build one, the HP Pavilion elite series are good ones for about a grand.

The blue power button needs to be brighter. Can't tell if the unit is on or off more than a few feed away. Can't do all tha Media Center can do on a PC. Can't play DVD files. Unless your wireless router is very close by you'll need a wired connection to get decent performance while streaming video. This unit is okay however if your budget allows I'd opt for a HTPC (which is what I'm now in the process of building).

I'm not sure why others are having issues but I did not. I admit I am a technical person, but I did not find this technically complex. I plugged in an HDMI cord and connected it to my AV receiver, powered it all up, went through the set up menu and had it working in 5 minutes.
Now that said, I did try and call their tech support about sound options and found it painful. First person I couldn't understand and ended up getting disconnected. Second try I got disconnected again. In total I was on the phone with them for 2 hours and they seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. But like I said. It works.

    DSM-750 Exceeded My Expectations, May 25, 2008
By user (Baltimore MD, USA)
I purchased the DSM-750 a few weeks after it debuted. It was shipped in it's factory box through another vendor **MALL... The box was slightly damaged, but all the parts were there and in new condition. I plugged it directly in and it auto-detected my router and my Windows Vista Premium 64bit PC. I connected with Windows Media Center and started to stream high-definition movies. My old DSM-320 videos, a collection of 500 GB of TV shows and movies, played perfectly too. I had access to my database of 5000 MP3s as well.

I really think that D-Link outdid themselves this time with the DSM-750. I see that a lot of customers gave this 1/5 stars, but my unit came fully functional, and not only satisfied but exceeded my expectations. I am glad that I waited 6 months for this product to come out. I would recommend this device for any Vista user with a Hi-Definition Television. It pairs perfectly with my Samsung 4661. I no longer use the 360 as a media extender/streamer with my DSM-750.

    Love the DSM-750, May 24, 2008

My media extender works great with Vista Ultimate Windows Center. When the DSM-750 was first released by D-Link it had some issues where people were not able to connect to their pcs. The problem had been fixed before I received mine in the mail. I have not had any issues and have been satisfied with the purchase.

    DON'T WORK, May 22, 2008
By user (Chile)
The DSM 750 is suppose to work in two modes Dlink Media Lounge and as a Windows Media Extender. It is impossible to make Media Extender Works, I followed all the recommendations regarding setting the firewall, antivirus, Enable Upnp Etc, and the same message, Extender Communication Error. The device, for some reason lose the configuration, and I have to restart it. The most important feature is the Media Extender which is not working. I wrote this problem to Dlink, no answer. Please beware where you buy so you don't buy an early version. Poor for D'Link.

Thanks

Deffective! Very poor Customer Service, May 10, 2008

Stay away from this product. The specs sound amazing but it DOES NOT WORK! DLink knows this and they have set up a special number and website to process a replacement ... AT CUSTOMER EXPENSE. I don't think so.

The Linksys 2100 works quite well with MediaCenter, make sure you use an N-Router if wireless, or setup wired.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE !!!!, April 25, 2008

What more can I add that hasn't already been said in this forum?
I tried it and spent many frustrating hours and finally gave up and returned it.
It is a bad product from a usually good company.

This was posted on another forum conscerning this product. I am wondering if the units still being sold are the new REV, or the old?

My name is Mark Espenschied and I am a Marketing Communications Manager for D-Link Systems, Inc. in Fountain Valley, California. A small number of early production DSM-750 Wireless N HD Media Center Extenders have an issue with a corrupted security certificate, which results in the communication error messages described in this post when trying to affiliate the DSM-750 with a PC running Windows Media Center. Unfortunately, this defect cannot be rectified through firmware upgrade, and can only be addressed by a factory-trained technician.

If you receive the communication error while attempting to affiliate the DSM-750 with Windows Media Center, please call D-Link technical support at 888-900-3939, Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm PST. This a special number which will allow you to directly reach appropriate technical support agents. They will assess the issue and determine if your unit needs to be replaced. D-Link is ready to quickly resolve this issue; tech support agents have been briefed and customers will be shipped replacement units if needed.

I want you to know that we are very excited about the DSM-750 and we recognize that you are among our most valued and technically-savvy customers. We have addressed this issue in all new DSM-750 units. D-Link greatly values our customers and we apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

    Horrible!, April 24, 2008
By user (Sacramento)
Like the previous 4 people said, this DOES NOT work as windows media extender! After being on hold for hours with D-link, I was told it was defective. Worse, it cannot be fixed with a simple firmware and has to be fixed by a "trained technician". If the technicians are like the support people, oh my!!!

I am waiting for a replacement from D-link!

Does not work as Media Extender, April 16, 2008
By user (NJ)
This item does not work as media extender. After a 2 week wait received product and did everything possible to get it to work with my Vista Ultimate pc. Note I am an IT professional so the technology is not new to me in any way. I finally called D-Link tech suppport and after 3hrs with them was told to return it as it's defective. Reading the prior reviews I see that I'm not the only one with this issue. D-Link needs to fix this product below realeasing to public.

Only 50% working - Does not work in MCE mode., April 14, 2008
By user (Alhambra, CA)
Waited long for this product to be released... the unit looks great and the User interface is simple and nicely layed out.. The unit does work in media lounge mode using windows media player 11 to share your content, however, as of right now, it does not work as a MCE Extender...
Dlink support is horrible, you get overseas call center that knows nothing of the product, and when you ask to be transferred to escalated tech support, you get disconnected or dead air... Until they can address this problem with not being able to be used as a media center extender which is the other half of the product, there will be overwhelming returns. Tech support advises to return unit and get a different one.. You might go thru 10 units and have none work as an extender. Looks like alot of others are getting the same problem as the first user commented. Maybe there will be a firmware to fix the problem, but then who knows when.

Do NOT buy this media center extender, April 13, 2008
By user (Taiwan)
I'll add more, but for now, check oput avsforums to see the mess that dlink has created here. I was a bleeding edge adopter on this and what a mistake. No one has gotten it to work out of box, not a one. Stay way clear of this.
