Here it is, in all its glory, a USB wireless adapter with the Prism chip set. What does that mean? Well it means you can sniff packets. If you ever found yourself itching to break into your neighbors WEP protected wireless network, this is the adapter for you.

Avoid NetGear and Apple OS X, July 26, 2006
By D. Clark (United States)
Got a deal on this WG111 v2. No mention of anything but windows on the documentation. Called support. NetGear does not support OS X. And it appears that one option is to PAY for a driver but that doesn't seem right. I'm returning mine.

works great with Tivo, March 12, 2006
By C. Lusk (Washington, DC United States)
I bought this to allow my tivo to update through our wireless internet network. Like the person who commented below, I gave Verizon the boot after much frustration, and do not have an analogue phoneline anymore. This was basically "plus and play"; all I had to do was plug it in and follow the on screen instructions (once I figured out that having the USB adapter to close to the Tivo recorder was causing some interference- it must be on a USB cable about 2-3 feet from the Tivo, wireless router and any things like coreless phones etc.)

The only problem is that you HAVE to use an analogue phone line for initial set up of Tivo service, but this is a Tivo issue and has nothing to do with this product. Once you haul the Tivo over to a friend's place to use their analogue phone line for the initial set up and get any software updates, this works beautifully.

If you have tivo, get this. You can not find a tivo compatible adapter in the store. This is old school, but it works.

Do you HATE the phone company? This thing can help you stick it to 'em., December 5, 2005
By West End Girl (Austin, Texas)
The last thing I needed my local phone company for was my TiVo. Although TiVo was the ONLY ONE WHO EVER USED THE PHONE, I still got outrageous bills. Anything over 15 miles is long distance? Are you kidding me, SBC?

So I VOWED that this was it. No more. No more SBC. And I hung up the phone full of righteous indignation. Then reality set in -- I don't have an alternative. Life without TiVo nearly made me bawl like the spoiled American I am.

So I did what I always do in this type of situation -- I asked Google what to do. Google and TiVo told me what to do. Be sure to check the TiVo site to get the right kind of adapter for your version of TiVo.

Buy this. Plug it in. Shoot the bird in the general direction of the phone company.

*Sigh*

It's so nice to beat a utility for once.

Works for me, November 28, 2005
By Virginia Rover (Virginia Beach, VA United States)
I have had this product for almost a year and have used it on my PC desktop and on my lap top. I haven't experienced any problems to date. For me, it does what is is supposed to do. I'd buy it again.

No problems once I got the latest driver, July 23, 2005
By G. Good (California)
I've got an old blue G3 mac that doesn't support Apple's Airport. I couldn't find any Mac compatible wireless cards other than Airport. The D-Link's USB adapter was the only wireless solution I could find.

I bought this adapter a year ago and initally had problems with it. It would work for five to ten minutes and then stop. I had to resart my Mac everytime it stopped working to get it to start again.

I downloaded the "latest" driver on D-Links web site, but that didn't help. I emailed D-Link's tech service, but their advice didn't work. At the same time, I posted my predictament on a few message boards. Someone responded with a link to download a current version of the driver (1.47) that wasn't on D-Link's site.

Since installing the new driver, I haven't had any problems with the adapter. It meets my needs and is fast enough for me. I would have given it five stars except that the tech support is lacking. There's no excuse for D-Link to not have the latest driver on their site, and no excuse for their tech support not to offer the updated driver.

    THIS BLOWS!!!, May 17, 2005
By ambiguous8 (Burbank, ca)
This device is great...when it works. It is more tempermental then a whiny kid with no parental control. Sometimes it works great, other times it will cause the computer to freeze randomly. Other times it will just lose connection with the base, you unplug it, plug it back in, works fine. Other times, it will lose connection, unplug, and the computer crashes. It is incredibly frustrating. If you need a quick fix, this is your device. But if you want long term results and reliable wirless connection, go with something else. If you can, go with a new computer and avoid this as much as possible

unreliable and bad range..., April 27, 2005
By - nothing can stop me from screaming in digital (Ohio USA)
I work as a PC technician for my local cable company's internet service and install these adapters daily for their customers... as well as trouble shoot problems for them. First off, regarding Mac users, you might as well forget it. They're supposed to work with MacOS X (10.2) but never have... at best I've seen them work intermittenly (and usually you have to plug it into the computer after you've booted it). As for PC users, it's a mixed bag. The adapters themselves seem to get unreliable after about 30 feet... sometimes I get good signals with interference-causing objects in between and sometimes I get poor signals with no apparent objects that should be causing interference. So... for PC I would say try one if you get a good price for it... and for Mac's my advice would be to not use this adapter as you will definitely experience problems with it.

Good product bad support, March 16, 2005

I own this DWL-122 since more than a year now. I bought this for $39 as it was on sale Fry's. Since then I am using it with one of my Sony Windows 98 laptop and is working great. However when I bought my new Toshiba laptop, I couldn't locate the CD ( I am not proud of it but happens with most of the people). So I tried downloading the driver over D-Link website and boy! I spent more than 2 hours but couldn't get to work. The website instructions are very confusing. I tried installing and uninstalling different drivers, none of them worked. So gave up and connecting it using Ethernet cable :(.
If I have to buy new adapter just for the driver. I would rather not buy D-Link product itself.

All the newer series 2 units support this unit, my only wish would be for better reception.

    Very unreliable, February 15, 2005
By Ricardo Escallon (Colombia)
It is not reliable. It loses the connection and causes my iMac to lock. The computer doesn't recognize the device if it is plugged at power up. Causes USB conflicts. May be it works with the windows drivers, but don't get it if you are planning to use it with a Mac.

    TIVO Wireless, January 23, 2005
By DBL (Hattiesburg, MS USA)
This is what you need to connect TIVO with an XP Wireless system. TIVO updates the device and connects to your home network flawlessly. All you do is select the home network that TIVO finds and type in your password (WEP). If you don't have a password, ask your neighbor for help, he's probably on your network anyway.

Download the TIVO desktop, follow the instructions for what you want to do and the world is yours.

    DWL-122 works fine with Tivo - DWL-G122 does not, January 16, 2005
By K. Park (Sunnyvale, CA)
I got this adapter for my Tivo to connect wirelessly to my home network. It works just fine. Note that Tivos are notoriously picky about which adapters will work. A previous reviewer suggested getting the DWL-G122, but I assure you it won't work. That is why I bought this one, and so far I'm really happy with it.

Great for TIVO...11.g adapter (DWL-G122) does not work, January 7, 2005
By Simon Reavely (Boston, MA United States)
I have a D-Link 11.g router. I needed an adapter for my TIVO. I bought and returned 5 different adapters before getting advice from TIVO on the ones to use. This was one supported. It worked instantly - no drivers, no nothing. I've not tested it for speed yet, but its getting 50% (good) signal.

Of course, if you have a 11.g compatible device I'd not go for this...go for the DWL-G122 or something else.

The small adapter comes with a (long) usb extension cord so it fitted easily into the back. Some I tried without the extension cord were a tight fit in the back.

works with mac........ sort of, November 28, 2004

this product did manage to work for the imac (OS X 10.2.8) that I was configuring, but the driver was extremely flakey and I could not get the WEP encryption to work. the solution for all macintosh computers that you wish to be wireless-capable is to buy a linksys WET11 wireless ethernet bridge. this product doesn't use drivers, so it's perfect for getting apples onto wireless if you have almost no other options left. I used a windows laptop PC to configure the WET11 before hooking it up to the apple, but i'm not sure if it's necesary to do that (it's explained in the instructions, there's a setup CD that needs to be run... not sure if the CD will run on a mac or not) this product is the only sure-fire solution that i can find to the macintosh wireless epidemic, but at all costs DO NOT BUY THE DWL-122, it won't perform to what you expect it to. also, it's completely unnecessary to purchase the airport base-station either, you'll get a lot more versatility if you buy a standard router, say the MR814 from Netgear.

Spotty performance with OS X computer, November 21, 2004
By Steven Butler (San Diego, CA)
I picked this device up when our apartment set up a wireless network. Installation on my computer was a pain (I had a iMac G3 running os 10.2.8), eventually I had to reinstall the whole OS. When I did get it working the computer could not go more than thirty minutes before freezing (something that had never happened before). Finally I was able to correct it by downloading the most recent drivers (which are NOT currently on the company website). Even then the connection was still only so-so.

Out of frustration I picked up a Belkin F5D6050, and it worked like a charm. Now my connection is twice as fast and umpteen times more reliable. My advice is to skip the DWL-122 product and go straight to the Belkin (much cheaper too).

Now hear this..., November 9, 2004
By Mr. Stephen Moreau
This product is not the best. I spent many hours trying to get it to work with 10.2.8 until I happened across an updated driver [v. 1.4.7] on version tracker (now I know why I should subscribe). Even the d-link website itself only had version 1.3.2 (and even then it was 1.3.1 when unpacked/installed). Even with this driver the signal has a tendency to deterioriate and it needs to be unplugged and replugged.

    D-Link DWL-122 works for Both PC & MAC.., October 22, 2004
By Mike (New York, NY, USA)
I've been testing the D-Link on both systems (PIII 850 WinXP sp2 / OS X 10.28 iBook G3/900Mhz) and it works just fine with (at this time) Get the OSX v1.4.7 drivers. This is exactly what I was looking for.
