Great performance after a difficult setup (AP Client Mode w/ Switch), March 7, 2008
By user (seattle)
I have a d-link router (DI-624) that I use for my wireless network. I wanted to install this access point on the network, attach a switch, and provide network access for a home-theater pc and an Xbox 360.
modem <-> router ... accesspoint <-> switch <-> pc & xbox
The access point can operate in five different modes. After some trial and error, I finally figured out that it was the "AP Client" mode that I needed from the wireless setup options to gain access to my existing wireless network.
After plugging in the switch and attaching the PC and Xbox to the switch, it was soon obvious that only the PC had connectivity. After much hair pulling, I finally found a post on dslreports.com by one lizi555 that explained a fix. Apparently the latest firmware (beyond 2.10) does not allow for more than one device (MAC address) to connect to the network via the switch.
To fix, telnet to the 2100AP's IP address 192.168.0.50 and enter the following commands -> set matstate 1 then -> reboot
This should set a flag for a variable to the following "MultiEthClient (Yes)!" You can check by establishing another telnet session and entering -> get matstate which will list several variables/values including the one above.
It took some doing, but now everything is flowing sweetly. I hope this helps anyone else that runs in to this problem.

Good product with a little Knowledge & exprience with networking, February 27, 2008
By user (Calvert City, KY United States)
I have 3 of these units working with a shared but hidden network and after some work and software upgrades have them set up for a good area network system... They work great once you figure them out... The instructions and on line support are not the greatest for a wireless network novice... Once you understand what you want and what they supply, you can set up a good home or local area wireless network...

Does the job, but..., September 14, 2007
By user
It (or a combination of it and my wireless router) intereferes with bluetooth. Now if I want to use the bluetooth on my phone, I have to unplug all this stuff ;(. VERY ANNOYING!!! Installation took 3 hours with 2 different reps. D-link customer service is outstanding, by the way. Also, my download speed seems to be limited to 75 kbps on the WAP end. Upload is more than double that, which is wierd. Looks like I need another few hours on the phone with tech support.
Bottom line...works kinda well when you actually get it set up. However, getting it set up can be an exercise in patience. Expensive for the speeds I'm seeing :(

Flexible and Secure, September 3, 2007
By user (Albany, NY)
I have tried several different units (entry level) for bridging and these units were the only ones that allowed me to setup a bridge with WPA2. Lots of options for various types of setups and very stable. The stock ant. provided a good connection, but since these will only be bridging 2 networks, I also grabbed a set of DWL-M60AT Directional Indoor Antenna's to limit my broadcast area and boost my signal strength. I bought a few extra units to use as Access Points and they have good coverage & stability. They are a few bucks more more than some other units on the market, but you get what you pay for!

D-Link = Bad quality = terrible customer support, August 28, 2007
By user (MN, United States)
Too bad I cannot give d-link 0 stars. Several hours on my own, then 3 hrs with customer's support - level one - from India, then level 2 from US, then supervisors of level 2 - doesn't work. Just bought linksys - setup in 5 minutes, works great. Conclusion - I will never buy d-link again, and wouldn't recommend you either.

Good value., March 9, 2007
By user (Duluth, MN)
We purchased two of these AP's to use for a point to point bridge, using 24 db gain antennas over about a quarter mile hop. We mounted the AP's in weathertight 8"x8"x4" boxes along with dLink POE's, all outdoors on a mast just behind the antennas. This eliminated the need to extend the Antenna's wires inside. It also eliminated considerable loss we would have encountered in running longer antenna wires.
The units have worked flawlessly since install. Our daytime high temperatures were 100 degrees max, winter low temperatures have been -20 degrees. We are operating at the minimal power setting for the AP-2100 without suffering throughput, put there is no way of verifying this.
If I could have one more feature, it would be some sort of signal strength indicator, along with some way of testing for data throughput.
Nevertheless, I would recommend a similar installation to anyone needing to bridge two LAN's together. We have just purchased a third DWL-2100 as a backup because we've gotten quite hooked on the system and would now be distressed if it should go out (due to lightning, etc.) So the the third unit is a backup, still sealed in its origional box.

Quality for the Price, January 8, 2007
By user (WI, USA)
Let me just say I use these where I work for our entire corporate network. They come with a 3 year warranty last I checked and are good quality for the most part. I see quite a few complains listed here but my thoughts are as follows:
I have purchased about 40 of these access points and have only had to RMA 5 of them because I use them in "client access mode." For some reason they seem to just quit functioning correctly after a while. Most of you will use "access point mode" so nothing to worry about. I have had most in access point mode and they've been running 2.5 years + non stop with no issues.
Also, go to D-Links website and download the latest firmware revision of 2.10 if the router doesn't already have it. You can configure the access point via a web browser or you can download D-Link's Airplus Extreme AP Manager off their site too. For ease of use stick with the web browser since it doesn't require the software although for simple configuration the AP Manager is preferred especially if your doing more than one.
Lastly, these access point used in client mode can (for those not familiar) be used as an "external" wireless card. What's the benefit to this? Instead of having a performance killing PCI card these are better and more stable in my professional opinion. We had issues with D-Link and Orinico PCI cards locking computers up. Some conflicts with certain Southbridge motherboard chipsets. Long story...
Also, I do use these in Point to Point and repeater modes and as long as your running the latest firmware revision you should have no problems. Hope this review helps at least one person.

Run, don't walk, away from this product, January 1, 2007
By user (San Diego, CA USA)
Here's a list of just a few disappointing things about this product:
1) No obvious way to use it as a wireless access point 2) Web interface is awkward and confusing 3) After changing many/most settings, device has to reboot 4) Port forwarding doesn't handle ranges of addresses 5) Online help is incomplete
I bought this as a replacement for an older router, but even with the latest updates, it doesn't have the basic functionality that I need.
Another waste of money...

good stuff, November 6, 2006
By user (Long Island new york)
I was having trouble w/ another brands wireless repeater. D-link tech said a wireless access point would not only extend range but you also would not lose any speed. Set up was a brezze. It performs great - Iam totally happy - Rich

Broken out of the box, September 21, 2006
By user (San Francisco, CA)
Read all of the negative reviews here and foolishly ignored them. The unit would not connect for configuration, despite being tried on three different systems. I configure WAPs for a living and it was a huge disappointment to have absolutely no response from this unit. Technical support was also worthless and I spent more time educating the agent about the product than he spent addressing any problems. Returned same day as purchase. Avoid this inferior product!

D-Link is garbage, September 6, 2006
By user (New Hampshire)
This piece of junk died after less than a year in service. I have a Linksys access point that has been running for over 3 years now. I'm on my way to get another one of those to replace this inferior D-Link product. Do yourself a favor and spend your money elsewhere.

EXCELLENT ACCESS POINT, July 15, 2005
By user (Port Orchard, WA USA)
This is an excellent Access Point. The setup is extremely easy. I used the built in wizard and my wireless network was up in minutes.
I have quite a bit of experience with routers, access points and other networking products and by far D-LINK is the best!!!! The tech support team for D-Link exchanged a defective Gigabit switch within one day!!!!
I highly reccomend this product!

DLINK IS JUNK!, May 2, 2005
By user (Honolulu, HI)
If your looking for a device to bridge with, as I once did in this device, head on over to Belkin's F5D7330 Wireless Ethernet Adapter and read my review. Belkin's equipment is so much more reliable, it does what you ask it to and doesn't flinch like inferior DLINK and LINKSYS products.
This DLINK device claims to perform 5 different purposes and can't get 1 straight, it's straight GARBAGE!

A Great Access point with Good Wireless Range and Features, April 21, 2005
By user
I like this wireless AP a lot. I've used it for a couple different situations thus far, but it is usually my main AP for my home network.
The different modes are majorly convenient as there were times when I needed a wireless client/adapter card, but didn't have one with me. I just happened to have this AP along with me and configured it for client mode and I was suddenly able to get online. Amazing convenience!
The setup and upgrade and configurations aren't the easiest thing to get right away, especially if you are a novice at wireless networks. Although I found once you are up to speed on the terms and how to get around the interface you will really notice the ease of use this actually has.

False advertising, December 31, 2004
By user (San Francisco. CA)
Be careful. This AP in repeater mode does not support WPA only WEP. Dlink support can't get their stories straight. Before purchase, an email inquiry regarding WPA support in repeater mode was answered in the affirmative. Upon receiving and installing the unit in repeater mode, WPA options were greyed out. A subsequent email to Dlink met with a referal to phone support. A phone tech gave me a convoluted explaination why the repeater should work, but soon it became clear to himself that the explaination made little sense so he checked with another person. Finally, he simply said "It doesn't support WPA in repeater mode, return it to your point of purchase"

Great Access Point - after firmware upgrade, December 29, 2004
By user (San Jose, CA USA)
I'm using this AP, along with a Netgear 802.11g PC Card to test streaming live/recorded TV to other parts of my house. Seems like a capable product even if I didn't use the 108Mbps feature.
However, be sure to update the firmware or the AP might not work correctly. When I first received it, configuration was easy enough but it had trouble working with my Netgear and HP Centrino notebook. Both notebooks will get a signal and even connect be failed to obtain an IP address from my network's DNS server. A firmware upgrade solved the problem and the AP now streams TV realibly from my living room to the kitchen.
I noticed that there is are hordes of wireless APs around my house, I guess most neighbours are using some form of 802.11 wireless as well. However, this D-Link AP is able to function correctly abeit all the other APs around (2 using the same channel as mine I've found).
Overall, recommended if you want a good AP. Just be sure to update the firmware.

updated firmware, November 14, 2004
By user (Kenmore NY)
i've had these access points for about 6 months and i wanted to get them to work, one as a repeater. i could never get them to work even with dlink support. i put them on the shelf and used my old netgear 602 aps. the other day i was on the dlink web sight and downloaded the 2.0 firmware. plugged the access points back in, upgraded them, rebooted them both, and they just worked. all of my settings were saved after the upgrade. they work great. they fixed lots of issues.

Perfect 802.11g Performer, August 18, 2004
By user
I couldn't be more pleased with this wireless access point. I set it all up in a matter of minutes, secured it with WEP in seconds and rebooted with zero problems. Connected with my DWL-G650 from D-Link and even my friends came over and tested it with thier built in wireless laptops and everything worked fine. Of course only when I told them the WEP passkey. :)
I set this up to be fairly static in the fact that it sits on my desk and doesn't need to move, but I have been known to take it to a friends house, plug it into his network and change a couple settings to allow everyone to use it. very portable in that aspect.

One of the most Easy to use Wireless Access Points, May 22, 2004
By user (Washington)
This Wireless Access Point provides great additional coverage in my home. We already have a DI-624 to cover half the house, but I wanted something to cover our expansive back yard as well. So I run a Ethernet cable to the sliding glass door downstairs and have this wireless access point setup on the table next to the door. Now I can roam the backyard with my laptop and have an optimal connection to the Internet.Setup was simple, basically follow the instructions and it works. Wireless Access points aren't hard to to setup anyway, but this was about as easy as it can get. My entire network is 108Mbps enabled.
