it works; limited range, January 20, 2007
By cranky_programmer (Long Island, NY United States)
Friday, January 19, 2007 2:48 pm. I got two of these. They are *definitely* less sensitive than two DWL-122s I had already. The g120s were basically unusable in the "front" room here in my computer attic, where the 122s worked fine. The g120s worked OK in the "back" room, so naturally I switched them around and all is well. The wireless access point is downstairs near the ceiling in the center of the house. The "bad" distance to it is about 26'; the good, 13'.

works great with TIVO, January 16, 2007
By A. Tourtellotte (Alexandria, VA)
I bought this to a provide a wireless connection for our TIVO. It works well and the set up was easy. We plugged it into tivo and it found our home network without a problem.

By following the manual step by step, I hooked this wireless USB adapter up with my desktop. So far it does not give me any trouble.

Works well with TiVo Series 3, January 4, 2007
By Loves gadgets (SSF, CA USA)
I purchased this specific unit because the TiVo forums recommended this unit as one that works well in helping to wirelessly connect the TiVo S3 to my home network.
It was easy to install (plug and play). Shortly after attaching this unit to the TiVo and going through the setup on the GUI, my TiVo was connected to my network. Overall setup time was less than 20 minutes.
Since then I've been enjoying the network functionality of my TiVo (viewing my digicam pics on my TV, using the MP3 jukebox, and downloading program guides via the internet, etc.) In the 3.5 months since I implemented, I have not had to reset the unit once.
For my application, this unit works really well, although it may not be a great fit for others with different applications. In my opinion, this would a bulky unit to attach to a laptop for mobile computing, but could be a cost effective solution if you were to attach it to desktop.

Good value, powerful for home usage on the wireless web. Unit is Bulky and should be mounted in a secure spot on the computer.

Choose a different adapter, December 8, 2006
By zdravez
This hardware does not live up to its promise. It cannot maintain a stable connection, and high connection speed in a "real life" environment. I am using it to connect my desk top to my wireless home network. My router (a 802.11g D-Link) is 25-30 feet away obstructed by only a wall (you know couple of drywall sheets and some 2x4s) and the signal strength is always below 20% with speeds only up to 2.0 Mbps. All my other wireless devices have full speeds and strengths at the same spot (where i have the D-link adapter).

Works with my Series 2 TiVo, November 10, 2006
By jmv (Hollywood, CA)
Purchased so I could do the daily updates on my TiVo over WiFi, and the products works very well with no trouble setting it up. I'm not sure if it works with "TiVo to go," but for just doing the schedule updates it is great.

No better range than my built-in, October 28, 2006
By johanndirty (East Coast)
Software installation the first time and I had to get a registry cleaner to clean everything up to the point where I could install it again. Finally got everything installed, but the d-link wouldn't even log in to my wireless network. On top of that, there was no improvement on signal strength over the built-in on my laptop.

Does not support WPA2, October 6, 2006
By Amiga (Honolulu, Hawaii)
This NIC does not support WPA2. Also, WPA is *only* supported by downloading the driver, version 3, at D-Link's Taiwan site.

D-link DWL-G120, August 26, 2006
By Home computer user (Cedar Park,Tx)
I read all the reviews on the D-Link DWL-G120 and there is some that love the product and some hate it. I have two of these products and the work fine. We did have a problem one time though, when pruchased a wireless phone on 2.4GHz and had the same experience. So it was returned and that was the end of the problem. May-be some of these problem, occur for the same reason or someone next door. Maybe this may help someone?

Worked for me, August 24, 2006
By GeekGirl (Chicago Illinois)
I'd read the reviews and debated about buying this. I work in IT so my working knowledge of computers is pretty good. Lots of people complain about DLink but I've worked with products from all the major brands - Netgear, Linksys, DLink, Cisco, Hawking, Belkin - and have had both good and bad experiences with all of them. So despite the poor reviews and because it was on sale I figured it was worth a shot.
I installed it on a Dell Dimension running Windows XP Home on a home network with a Linksys WAP545G wireless router. I simply followed the instructions - didn't try to do anything fancy - and had no problems getting it to work. First I installed the drivers from CD, rebooted, then connected the card via the provided USB cable. Upon reboot the PC detected the card right away and I let Windows automatically install the driver files. It picked up the wireless right away and has been connected since.
The only thing I did differently was disable the DLink software and let Windows manage the wireless connection. This took no more than just right-clicking on the DLink icon in the system tray and choosing "exit", then removing the DLink software from startup via the msconfig utility.
I gave it 4 stars because the DLink gets a slightly weaker signal than its predecessor, a Linksys PCI card that was in the laptop that I replaced. The card itself also gets a little hot compared to other wireless USB adapters I've used. In any case it still works and does what it is supposed to do. So, 4 stars.

Too many problems, August 22, 2006
By Wireless-less (Philadelphia, Pa United States)
I had a D-link USB adaptor before which was really good, but was old. I upgraded to a wireless G Linksys USB adaptor, but I was supplied with old goods (a Linksys sales manager confirmed that), so I sent that back. I thought I'd try D-Link again. Bad move. First, I tried to upgrade the drivers. My current version was 1.0.5.0. I downloaded the version 1.12 from D-Link's site. After uninstalling and reinstalling (several times) I still had 1.0.5.0. An hour and a half on the phone with D-Link tech support and I still had 1.0.5.0. Another hour on Google, and I'm not the only one with this issue. Seems to be a version-control issue with D-Link. Then, even more irritating, every time after I use my wired connection and go back to wireless I have to reinstall the drivers and reboot. And re-enter all my security info again. (I believe this has something to do with using a different USB port from the last time, but whatever the reason, it's unacceptable). This adaptor's going back too. Don't know what I'll try next.

no speed boost but great range boost., March 14, 2006
By koo (seoul,korea)
ok mimo is becomming popular ....i dont give a darn.
my home net work relies on a cable modem(moto4200)+wlanRouter
my house is 2 story high and it's made of steelbar re-enforced
concrete... with brick wall here and there...
since the internet performenc is lower then 9mbits max...
all i wanted was penatration through the concrete floor..
i 'v used pen type? usb adapters and so on ...but they were
always short in range ...but g120 was another demention ...
allover the house allrange !when i put this close to the wall
adjacent to the negihbor's house, i was able to update my
neighbor's router firmware (i've done it twice already)
speed is not the main concern in my case .
but you guys should know about it's response speed . its a
little slower then pcmcia types even if i use usb2.0 connection
but i think thats because my lap top is running xp-pro on
celeron 800/256mbram. as long as you have a good pc
(faster then mine~!)
you wont have any problems. it's not that hot dont worry!
i wont give this product 5stars because it's not small enough.
who needs mimo. !
ps: use the zero config not the stupid utility.

Bad Bad products, June 26, 2005
By Yiyi (USA)
It suddenly stoped working after two months. The tech support is even worse, alway tried to let me believe the problem is from router. Don't trust D-link!

Works great, but you have to know what you are doing., May 25, 2005
By CoyoteTeacher (Massachusetts)
Good range and speed and perfectly reliable. But you have to understand the technology. The extra speed advertised only comes when you have matching components. If your entire wireless setup is not AirPlus Extreme, you will have to adjust configurations on this and other parts of the network, including the router, to be more vanilla 802.11g.
By the way, I am currently using it taped to an old 266MHz Toshiba laptop and sitting one floor and 60 feet from my (D-Link) router. And the antenna is folded down. And, no, it hasn't ever crashed.

POS in a Nice Wrapper, December 20, 2004
By Salty F (Tempe, AZ)
I'm disappointed that I did not read the reviews before buying this adapter. I had a very bad experience with Dlink products before. And I know that some of their products must be pretty good, otherwise they would have been out of business by now. I guess I just have not been lucky enough.
As for the DWL-G120 adapter it seems that it has all the components to be the best USB 802.11 network adapter on the market. It is just that those components are not put together well enough. Stylish design, good reception for an omnidirectional antenna of this size, fast USB 2.0 connection, low power consumption, seamless installation. The chipset is not the best on the market, but it is cheap and this is what most of the competitors are using anyways. Kudos to the hardware designers. There are not that many things that you can mess up by taking a reference design and putting it into an attractive package, and they managed to stay out of trouble.
On the other hand, the drivers that come with the adapter SUCK! The drivers are not WHQL certified, they do not support basic plug and play and power management features (which is very strange, considering this is a USB device and I'm using Windows XP), I also think that most of the problems with stability of the link and the software itself are attributed to the poor quality of these drivers. And it would have been more or less understandable if the product have just been released and the software team was still working on it, but it has been a full year since the drivers have been last updated, and it seems that there is very little hope that somebody at Dlink still cares about the fate of this product.
It is a good example of how even the things that start out very well can be screwed up by not giving them enough attention.
I'm returning this thing tomorrow, and I'm suggesting that everybody else stays away from this product, at least until Dlink decides to come up with decent drivers for this adapter.

Conflict with the D-Link DWL-G800AP Wireless Range Extender, November 22, 2004
By A regular Amazon Customer (USA)
Before ordering your product from D-Link, it would be smart to call D-link sales, at 877-453-5465, and discuss with a live sales rep what you intend to install, and if all of the D-Link components you are intending to purchase will work with one another. Believe it or not, they may not. I learned the hard way. I also learned that D-Link Tech support does not seem to be aware of compatability factors either, which may account for their inability to solve so many problems that customers have reported. The knowlege in compatability issues is the Sales department! My problem? This USB card will not work with the D-Link DWL-G800AP Wireless 802.11g Range Extender (which I installed near the edge of my router's signal range in order to boost my network signal and lengthen my network's reach). I eventually noticed that the product description and the the box itself tells you what product works with which other product, but all of the product designations are respresented in nomenclature such as DWL-2000AP,DWL-2100AP, DWL-G120, DWL-G132, DWL-G650X, and so forth. I initially found it confusing. As an average consumer, I just assumed that the company would create products that work with all of its network products, but with wireless, many companies just don't. I guess they are designing products and redesigning for different markets, and then rapidly designing newer, updated products as IEEE standards even more rapidly evolve -- Hence, the G20, G22, etc. Bottom line? Dlink is good quality hardware, but you need to have more than plug and play knowledge to set up ANY wireless system no matter whose you buy.

This was an expensive mistake!!!, November 12, 2004
By DDC (USA)
My broadband server installed the D-link DWL G120 for me. My pc(windows 98) was working fine before the installation but then after installation of d-link it would completly freeze up and the tech. could not get it to work. He also installed the D-link USB 122 on my laptop (windows xp)which also worked fine before installation, but now it shuts completly down after 3-10 seconds after laptop boots up and then it is difficult to get it booted up again. I took both the pc and the laptop into two different repair shops to see what was wrong and they both said the same thing...I will have to replace both of them. I am more than disappointed with this product. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I Great USB 802.11g Adapter, September 15, 2004
By Fresh Attire
I love how portable and easy to use this adapter is. After the painless install, all you need to do is plug it in and my Windows XP Laptop suddenly recognizes it and connects to my home network.
The flip top makes for a cool tech look, while being a functional antenna. I get better signal with the flip top up. I get good range with this ... strong signal anywhere in my home with my Access Point/Router located on one side of the house.
USB also makes it so you don't have to plug it into the wall to get power. I hate having to do that with so many "wireless" devices.

wi-fi, September 7, 2004
By wifidrifter (everywhereusa)
My hp notebook has built in wi-fi, which works good, however I wanted a wi-fi device that could obtain a stronger signal and have greater range, the DWL-G120 is weaker than my built in wi-fi in my notebook pc.
