OK router. Not great for a MIMO router., December 23, 2006
By S. Tam
I've been using DI-634M router for about a month now and I think it is an OK router, but not great for a MIMO router. Suppose to cover a range of 500ft and my netgear pci adapter is only 100ft away. I get 5 bar out of 8 bar. I was expecting 7/8 for a MIMO router.
The Good. The speedstream function to improve for voip (vonage) does work. I could detect the sound quality to be more a little more clear with calls within United States. International calls is still up in the air. I think International calls issue is with vonage.
The Bad. Range is average at best. I tested every channel (1-11) on the router. You can rotate the antenna about 180 degree. Be careful while moving the antenna because it take very little pressure to crack the antenna holder. This happen to which happen to me. The gray/silver paint make you believe the router is make of metal but it's really cheap plastic.
Plain and simple, I get better coverage with my Netgear WGT624V3 router than this. Not sure I can recommend this router to anyone.

Would recommend if it worked and tech support wasnt' lousy, December 20, 2006
By Blanka711
Bought my router about 5 months ago and then the line would just suddenly drop. Called tech support which is obviously outsourced somewhere in India and had a horrible time understanding what they were saying due to poor line quality. It sounded like I was talking to someone in a tin can and they had a really thick accent to boot. The 1-yr warranty on this device makes it worthless. I got disconnected three times and one "senior technician" tried telling me that I needed to take my laptop to someone who knew how to set up a wireless network. Big time red flag! If this worked it would be great, unfortunately it doesn't and now I have to deal with someone who is not easy to understand and who is undertrained to the point where they are pawning the issue on my laptop. Im no network administrator but I know when the issue is with the router and not my wireless peripherals. Shameful.......do not buy this product unless you want to deal with an outsourced "technician" who claims to be in Silicone Valley California. When asked what city in California they said, "Orange County"......uh....yeah. Stay clear of D-Link.

Have to comment on previous comments, December 10, 2006
By Mandy (Omaha NE)
Yes the DLink service is a big part of things. I am not real techie so I have had to call them. On three different occassions, they have HUNG UP on me. Apparently they only allow so much time and if not resolved they hang up on you.

Arrived broken, tech support shipped overseas since last time, December 7, 2006
By C. Nielsen (San Jose, CA)
Don't know if there's much more to write. The last D-Link Router I purchased, a DI-784, ran beautifully, with just a slight bit of help from tech support (I was a newbie). This time, I spent 20 minutes going thru the typical overseas call center checklist, argued over the spelling of my name, the spelling of my email, unplug this, unplug that, restart this, restart that, being called "Sir" more than 3 times a minute.
I consider tech support to be part of the product, especially from a company that makes huge claims about their support. That, and the combination that this router was broken on arrival, means i'm looking for a new brand to buy.

Everything You Could Want, December 4, 2006
By Wannabe Geek (NJ)
Installation: This router was extremely easy to setup - it took me 1.5 hours, but it would have taken about 20 minutes total if it weren't for the fact that (1) I had an existing router connected, and the wizard requires a computer to have a direct, wired connection to the internet (my cable modem required restarts in order to accomplish this) and (2) I discovered that my laptop only supports 64bit WEP, whereas I had my WEP key set at 128bit. Connectivity/ coverage: The connection is ten times better than my previous router, a D-Link DI-514. I live in a small apt, but I had issues getting a steady connection before due to the large number of other routers in nearby apts, and also due to the interference from my many other electronic devices. I now get a solid signal throughout the 800 sq ft area. Compatibility: This worked out of the box with Nintendo DS WiFi - I just had to enter my WEP key into the DS and I was done. I am hoping it will also be compatible with the Wii (my Wii is currently in transit, so I don't know how this will work yet). It also worked with my VPN connection settings without problems so I can login to my office's network from home - I didn't have to fiddle with any settings, which I did have to do with my first router. Also, I have a 3 yr old laptop with an old wireless card in it (802.11b) - I didn't have to upgrade the card in order to get a better wireless network setup (major plus!!), which would have been required if I went with a Wireless N router (802.11n). I have the option of getting a new card later on if I want to improve the performance, or if I want my wired connections to go wireless. That is great flexibility right there. Aesthetics: Gorgeous unit; able to sit vertically (just adjust antennae for best coverage). Security: offers numerous options for security, both for the LAN and the WLAN (including parental controls). I haven't bothered to play with them all yet, but they're pretty easy to setup so far and the manual that comes on the CD explains all of the options pretty clearly.

Stop rebooting, please!, November 29, 2006
By What's a router? (SF Bay Area)
I purchased this router to replace my old Linksys WRTG54S, which I gave to my sister. That device has worked flawlessly since 2004. I chose this one based on a recommendation from a friend. While it seems like a decent device, it wont stop rebooting. It will be up and running for about an hour, then it will just reboot constantly. I've disabled UPnP, but that doesnt help.
Sofware upgrade, same results.
I picked up a LEMON, I know it!
Do I want to replace it with the same device? probably not... Aside from this being a faulty router, I have 2 complaints about it.
1. Having to reboot the router after making a significant change. If this were a business environment, would I want my network down just because of a configuration change? D-link needs to fix this issue.
2. Waiting for the laptop to authenticate with the router took forever. With my old Linksys, upon booting up, my laptop was connected to the wireless lan instantly.
Basically, I give it 1 star for D-Link's weak quality control.

Great, fast and easy to setup, November 24, 2006
By Reza D. (Los Angeles, CA)
This is my first router and I don't have experiences from previous routers but I'm quite satisfied with this one. It was easily setup without any problem in 5 steps. The speed is great. I have connected a PC through cable and a laptop through wireless networking. The connected speed now is 54 Mps and if you want to have a 108 Mps speed you should use compatible netwok cards. The software has many features like multiple security options. The router reboot takes less than 15 seconds and the range is great.

Fantastic Performance, November 15, 2006
By JohnS (Phoenix)
I bought this router after fighting with an Airlink101 MIMO Wireless G router for many months. The Airlink router regularly dropped connections with my Mac Mini, and my kids' laptop and desktop PCs. It also could not be detected by the Xbox360 wireless adapter, which had no problem detecting a neighbor's Belkin router. I had to reset the Airlink router and reboot computers with daily regularity. I purchased this unit on sale, and I could not be more satisfied with the DI-634M router. The installation was easy. The unit has not dropped a connection since I installed it 3 days ago. All computers have enjoyed 100% internet connection reliability. I have great coverage throughout the 2 story house; better than the old router provided. I heartily recommend this router.
Update 12/27/06: The router has been performing flawlessly since installation. The router uptime is 26 days, according to the router's status log. Since the original review, I added a wireless Xbox 360 connection. The Xbox 360 wireless adapter connects to the system using WPA protocol, and everything works great! The Xbox 360 is on a different floor than the router, and it doesn't seem to be experiencing any signal strength issues. All the wireless computers connected to this system have experienced flawless connections since day 1.

Doesn't have a great range, November 11, 2006
By W. Wise (Georgia)
I purchased this router to go with my cable box that provides phone, internet and cable to my house. The cable box is in the basement so I purchased this router so the signal would carry to the 2nd floor office. Other comments and reviews said this router could carry a signal further, but I found NO DIFFERENCE from other routers that I have purchased. It is a comparable to other routers, but doesn't carry further or offer anything 'above and beyond' as I had expected.

Flawless, October 22, 2006
By Mark Johnston (Sacramento, CA)
After having owned just about every wireless router in the galaxy (Linksys and many others) I am pleased to report the DI 634M is by far the most robust, dependable, low maintenance router I have ever owned. In the 2 years I have owned it, I have NEVER had a SINGLE problem with it--regardless of power failures, new Windows installations, configuration changes, and so forth. The security it offers is second to none and this router NEVER complains, stutters, belches, coughs, or gripes. I highly, highly recommend this router for anyone who wants a router that is the equivalent of the Energizer bunny--this baby just keeps going, and going, and going...
Thank you DLINK!!!!!!! Somebody finally got it right.

A reliable one; no connection drops, September 17, 2006
By Bookie (California)
I have had it for more than 2 months now. During this time it has not dropped the connection even once.I have tried Netgear and Belkin in the past. They used to drop connection every now and then. I bought this one to use it with my VOIP phone line to replace my current Belkin router. So far this one has held up pretty good. Forget the installation CD; that is a mess. Use your browser to configure & set it up.

Excellent and stable, September 15, 2006
By digitalhen (Jersey City, NJ USA)
I've been using this router for a few days. I just had to set it up - I haven't had any cause to touch it since, it's very reliable. Highly recommended.

d-link 108g MIMO router okay :), September 14, 2006
By Leopoldo L. Ruelas Jr.
its an okay router from what it seems so far. signal great, clean no drops as of yet but as soon as you get it you have to update the firmware to use it..i tried and it wasnt possible to do without it... mine came with no instructions however, so to tap into your routers GUI to configure it enter 192.168.0.1 in the adress bar in Internet explorer... then configure there.. you can throw away the install cd that came with it or maybe try to bargin with Satan to take it back to hell where it came from because it is completely usless! other than that everything is good :)

Easy to use, bad software, September 1, 2006
By TerranStryder (NC USA)
Very easy to setup. The software that comes with the Router is not great and not very useful. Once I ignored the instructions included it was easy to get the router to work properly.

It may have worked for some, but ..., August 16, 2006
By Racer-X (Reno, NV USA)
It sure did not work for me.
Initially, I'll state that I'm sure there are those here who had a good experience with this product. I do not disbelieve them. In fact, I'm simply envious because my experience was pure dissatisfaction.
I am a professional and somewhat tech-literate. I purchased the router for the purpose of being able to use my notebook computer from anywhere in my home to connect through the DSL modem to which my desktop is connected via an ethernet cable. My ISP is SBC/Yahoo, and my desktop is a Dell XPS 600 (3.0 gHz P4 w/1gb ddr ram). I was not attempting to get the router to do anything for which it was not designed (per its express advertising).
All items in the box were in place and intact. There was nothing remarkable about their appearance.
I read the instructions and installed the CD that accompanied the router, following the instructions to a "T." My connection to the internet was lost when the router was connected. I tried several times to connect, following the CD's instructions again and again to no avail. I rebooted the computer, the modem, the router, and combinations of the three. No change. My connection was immediate restored when I reconnected the router. I also entered into the configuration settings of the router by using my browser and the internal IP address included in the manual. I saw nothing obvious, so, I called the customer service line per the advice the D-Link software was giving me.
After about 15 minutes on hold, I was speaking with someone who was friendly, but apparently in India or some other place in the world. The phone transmission delay and thick accent were minor annoyances, but farming out tech support is fairly common these days. I only mention this part because I know some people who get very annoyed with this practice.
The tech support representative was helpful as she went through her scripted Q and A in her attempt to resolve the problem. She eventually put me on hold for a few minutes to "check something." She then came back and immediately had me change the DNS settings of the router and my desktop's internet options. Voila! Connectivity. ... At least for the moment. That process took just under an hour, including the time on hold.
I got off the phone and for the better tried to log in from the notebook computer for the better part of another hour. Signal strength was VERY strong anywhere in the home, so the product definitely performs as advertised there. I was, however, unable to get any connection. I removed firewalls (Zone Alarm), restored them, changed settings, changed the DNS settings on the notebook, etc. No change.
So, I thought perhaps I would reboot my desktop, remembering that I had not done that since the phone call. I rebooted the desktop and .... no connectivity from the desktop again. I was back to square one. Actually, I'm not headed for square one, but instead back to Best Buy to return the router.
I am not saying the router is bad for everyone, but I am saying that I'm very dissatisfied that it was so difficult to set up and maintain a connection. With the advances companies have achieved in fast, clean wireless connections, it makes no sense to me why advances have not also been made in ease of use right out of the box. My experience with this particular product was poor, so I can only give it one star.

Excellent wireless router, August 11, 2006
By banks2846 (Philadelphia,PA)
To me this DI-634M router is the best of all the comparable wireless G routers I have tried (including Linksys, Netgear, Buffalo, Belkin, and Actiontec). It maintains my PPPoE connection faithfully. It also performs virtual servers (e.g., HTTP, FTP, etc.) port forwarding very well.

Not a One Button Explosion but Awsome once configured, August 10, 2006
By D. McConnell (Chicago)
Well since this is my first wireless I cant speak from experience of owning others, but if you follow the instruction to the letter, you should have no problem getting up and running with in a few hours. Yes, hours. It does take a few installs to get it up and going and you will need to update the FLASH memory. Once the unit is configured I haven't had a glitch in 4 weeks and counting. The included network software works great but I don't think it should include an extra cost after trial is up, but for 19.00 I'm not that concerned. I give it five stars because honestly, I didn't expect the install to go without a hitch, It never does, at least for me ;)
All in all I am happy... The range on the unit is impressive, works great through brick and old time plaster walls too. Really fast data transfer and lots of features if you like to tinker but the defauls will work fine. Buy it you will be happy with the purchase.... after a day of tinkering

D-Link Super G with MIMO Wireless Router DI-634M - wireless router ( DI-634M ), August 7, 2006
By Jimmy (Jericho, NY United States)
Overall is nice. Fast. Easy to setup Never drop signal via (DSL FIOS - download) - Cable modem drops signal whenever you performing excess download.
DI 624 drops signal twice a week via (DSL FIOS) Cable modem drops signal every day
Cons - reboot router pick 2 minutes - too long, DI 624 take 30 second to reboot the router.
Using WPA-EAP setting and a 2.4 G wireless phone next to DI-634M router cause static signal on the 2.4 G wireless phone. Change to 5.0 G wireless phone to eliminate the static problem

Excellent router, built in booster!, July 25, 2006
By Falcon4 (Fresno, CA USA)
I was previously using a Hawking HBB1 broadband booster with my DSL modem and Netgear MR814 V2 router. After the booster and router beat each other up for the last time, I decided to buy a new router.
I previously tried another Netgear router, a Netgear Super-G media router (with USB port for net storage), which had massive stability problems. I returned it and moved back to the old MR814. I had pretty much lost faith in new technology, since the "best router" (the new Netgear one) failed so horribly...
Everything changed with the DI-634M. It's fast, stable, FEATURE PACKED, HUNDREDS of settings, a tweaker's PARADISE, and... I mean, I can't even express how awesome this thing is. I really love it.
Thinking of buying a router? Buy this. Really.
