Best Router I've Owned, July 2, 2006
By Sabalo (Virginia Beach, VA)
Part of my job is network installation, and I wholeheartedly recommend the DI-634M if you need excellent signal range and a high quality MIMO router with high configurability. In fact, the D-Link MIMO is the most reliable, least problematic MIMO router I have encountered. I use a Linksys MIMO router at work and I am constantly (1-2 times per day) resetting the router because it drops the wireless connection to all (20 or so) machines. With my D-Link, I've not ever had to reset or reconfigure the router.
For VOIP users (and if you aren't using it, why not?), the Streamengine technology does make a noticable difference in the quality of your calls if your network has multiple computers. It also seems to speed up the overall network speed, but I've not measured it to be sure.
All in all, this is an excellent deal.

Painless Installation, July 1, 2006
By Dr. Frankenstupe (Portland, OR)
Though no technophobe, I had never installed a home network and expected this puppy to be very messy and take several hours. Maybe I'd spent too many nights trying to install 300 baud modems back in the day. Surprise! The wizard led me through installation in no more than 10 minutes. The hardest part was realizing that the WEP code had to be in hex and not alphanumeric. Another 5 minutes and my laptop was connected. Next I installed my TIVO on the network, that took about 15 minutes. Range is excellent. My Tivo is on the other side of the house, 40' away, and down in the basement. Reception down there is fine and I'm currently streaming Live365 to my stereo system via the Tivo.
Great product!
Update: After a couple of weeks of using this router, I've run into a couple of problems, neither of which is technically the router's fault. First, my internet connection got very flakey and then died altogether. After extensive troubleshooting, it turned out that I needed to replace my phone jack. During this process I did discover that the router will reach the basement from our second floor, albeit a little weakly. The second issue is with the Network Magic software inclosed with the router. I installed the software on my desktop and laptop. It works well enough, but the upgrade/update process is problematic. When I updated the software on my laptop, my desktop wouldn't recognize it any more. Also, even though I paid the subscription fee, my laptop says I haven't. Looking back, I would have checked out other options more fully before deciding on network software.

Excellent 108G Router, June 10, 2006
By Globalsaloon (roseland, nj)
My Di-624 router died after 2.5 years so went out and got the DI-634M. First one kept rebooting its self, 2 hours later setup the 2nd one from BB and its been magic for 1 month now. Great range and configuation ability for a sub $200 router.

Can't get a connection to stay on, June 8, 2006
By The Family Wise (Folsom, CA)
The signal strength always reports excellent but my devices keep dropping from their connections. This is my second 634M and I am taking it back too.

Works well, June 7, 2006
By Ken (Granite Bay, California)
I had been using an old I-Mac software base station as my wireless network router, but the coverage and speed were not great. So I bought this because the product box said it's Mac compatible. There is no software to install. Just hook your internet cable/modem to the product, then hook it to your computer, open your browser and type in an address and you are connected to the router. You can then run a "wizard" which worked ok on Firefox, but crashed on Safari. I made a couple of setting changes and disconnected my laptop and I was up and running very quickly. It also has 4 ports to connect directly to computers. Coverage and speed are much better now, so it was a good buy. I took 1 star off because the documentation (two pdf documents either on disc or you can download) are full of geek speak and not very informative for a lay person like me.

Best Router - Best Customer Service, June 3, 2006
By Diwakar Iyer (New York, NY, USA)
I was on the market for the best router and confused between D-Link, Netgear and Linksys.
After reading reviews of 634M I thought that I should give a try and got it.
I installed it connecting to my cable modem and my four computers at my work place. Of course, I had difficulty connecting at the first place and thus called the customer service. Trust me, the person who helped me configure the router for all my computers, spent almost 35 minutes over the phone and I achieved connectivity not only to the external world but also to the internal world.
The product is excellent and the customer service is just great.
I can't believe that for a $100 product, they have 24 hours/365 days customer service over the phone.
Good job D-Link for bringing out an excellent router.

Currently the best router around, May 13, 2006
By graff_e_t (CHICAGO, IL. USA)
This is an amazing router compared to previous ones i had. configuration is a bit of a pig to do but once you sorted out setting up your router (properly) it can be a reliable piece of hardware never dropped a connection even once and the distance it covers really impresses me and the good reviews here sealed the deal for me and one of the reasons i got one.

Great router -- tough to install ?!?!, April 8, 2006
By ken_sue_and_crew (Glassboro, NJ USA)
We bought a Dlink DI-634M recently from CompUSA -- it was on sale for $[...] with a $[...] mail in rebate. Brought it home and everything went smoothly with the initial installation. We have 3 computers, 1 Xbox, a laptop, and a PalmPilot accessing it. All worked well until we noticed some sites would not load. Then we found some email would not load. Spent hours playing with settings and things would get a little better and then worse again. Finally we tried installing the updated firmware and so far the problems are gone and the router is operating very fast and smooth. Appears to be a great value for the money.

You can't beat it, March 22, 2006
By William Doyle Wuertz II (Houston, TX USA)
I live in an apartment with a whole bunch of other wireless networks around me (and unfortunately they're all protected, so I can't leech!). I tried routers from Netgear and Linksys, but I could not get the WiFi to stay connected with either of them- the signal/noise ratio was just too small. I had heard some bad things about D-Link in the past, but after seeing how positively this unit was reviewed here, I decided to go ahead and try it. Problem SOLVED! Not only is the wireless signal strong and fast, even the wired connection is noticably faster than the other routers. I would not have guessed that a dedicated router could be such a bottleneck on speed, but apparently it was. It's like a whole new internet! Definitely a great product.

once running works great, March 21, 2006
By tech not savvy
This router took 5 calls to tech support to get running. It took 4 of those calls to get upgraded to advanced support at which time a simple reconfigure of URL was necessary because I use SBC DSL. Now that it's working I've never had a dropped signal and it's twice as fast as the old one.

D-Link Super G with MIMO Wireless Router DI-634M, March 3, 2006
By Steve Seligman
I first bought a Linksys Wireless Router, signal not strong enough. Then I bought a bosster from Linksys- signal still not strong enough.
I returned it all and bought the above D-link wireless router. Worked perfectly as advertised. No bosster necessary.
Stay away from Linksys. Their phone tech support is terrible and inefficient and their products are clearly inferior to D-Link products.

What I've heard about Safari and the Dlink UI revolve around how Safari handles XSLT and some XML code. Try using Camino (or whatever the firefox mac version is).

Have never looked back!, February 15, 2006
By Timothy Anderson
I owned a DI-624 for a long time. I would have gone completely bald except for the fact that I now own this DI-634m.....with the 624 rebooting every five minutes and me hitting it over and over with a hammer out of frustration, I needed a new router...so I took my chances and bought this one. Ever since the purchase I have NEVER looked back. Not only does it not reboot, but the speed this device gives even with WPA with AES is INCREDIBLE. Below I have included a speed test with the advertised 6m/384k from Comcast using this router(DI-634m)...I would HIGHLY recommend this router to ANYONE....ESPECIALLY those who now own a troubled DI-624

Long Time D-Link Mac User, December 22, 2005
By Jon Jaffe (Austin, TX USA)
I have been a D-Link user for several years. My children have used the Dl-614+ at college and configuration was never problematic. My home is a large ranch style house with limestone walls, and wireless router placement was difficult. I had to have an additional wired access point at the other end of the house for complete coverage.
After 5 years the access point died. Tech support suggested the new Dl-634M, and stated that the coverage was much better. I just installed it, configured it easily with my Mac laptop and in fact coverage was much better, but not perfect.
I called D-Link tech support to see if I could use my old D-614+ as an access point. In five minutes we had it converted and running. The whole house is 5x5 now. Tech support is 24/7 and always helpful.
In sum, the Dl-634M is very fast, easy to configure, and tech support is excellent.

I thought there would be more of a fight!, December 20, 2005
By S. Parker (Salem, Or USA)
The set up was on a Windows XP Pro home network. I'm famillier with computers and I'm not intemidated by them. I was expecting more of a fight with this project. That is why I waited so long to start it.
About a month and a half ago I purchased a D-Link wireless router, DI-634M. Last night I got around to setting up my network. I went through the router setup wizard and then installed the accompanied software, Network Magic. Boom, I was connected. I could see the desktop I was on and the printer connected to it. Checked my internet connection, it was fine. Then the software said to take out the disk and load the software on all other computers. So I broke out the Dell laptop, installed the software, turned on the internal WiFi for the laptop. Again just like that, I was on! It was pretty slick! I could see the laptop I was on, the main desktop and the printer connected to it. I broke out the older Dell W2K laptop with a PCMCIA wireless card (the card is a new D-Link DWL-G650M Wireless 108G MIMO CardBus Adapter that goes with the router). Loaded the Network Magic software and there it is again. I could see all three systems including the printer connected to the main desktop.
I have read several times where people had difficulties setting up their new router and software. Fortunately, I have not had the problems that others have described with their installations of other network devices and software. My router and one wireless card is all new along with the Network Magic software. Maybe that is why my installation was so easy.
So far Network Magic is, I guess, pretty good. This is my first Home network I have set up. I haven't had any issues yet (My network has been up less than 24 hours), except when I found out that my Network Magic software is a 30 day free trial, it isn't included in the cost of my router.

Mac Users Beware!, November 8, 2005
By Dave L (San Jose, CA USA)
While this router seems to work OK, it cannot be fully administered from a Macintosh using Safari, even though D-Link claims Mac compatibility. For some unknown reason, the lists of machines and MAC addresses do not show up in the several admin screens that utilize them. After many attempts to work through the issue with D-Link tech support, I gave up. They do not appear to be able to understand, let alone test and fix the problem.
