Works great!, March 23, 2006
By user (Los Altos, CA USA)
My old ADSL modem, a Zoom X5, had the habit of locking up while using my VPN, and Zoom's customer support was unhelpful at resolving this issue. In addition, my D-Link 802.11b access point was getting flaky, and I was looking to upgrade to 802.11g. When I saw the Diamond Multimedia DSL642WG it looked like the perfect answer.
Upon receiving it I was impressed with the size. It's about 6"x4"x1" with an unobtrusive antenna. It has a reasonably helpful quickstart guide with directions for Windows, Mac, and Linux (bonus points!). I found setup very straightforward. The web-based interface is reasonably intuitive, responds fairly quickly, and doesn't require rebooting after changing each option as some comparable models do. It has flexible firewall rules (also used for port forwarding), and has excellent support for remote administration, including the ability to immediately send email upon various trigger conditions (i.e. a port scan), or to email the log at regular intervals or when full.
It has been rock-solid for me in the several days since I received it - no flaky behavior of any sort, even while running some fairly demanding file transfers, and my VPN connection hasn't dropped once. I can't speak to wireless sensitivity as I don't have a particularly demanding topography, but I've had no problem connecting from several computers. I also find it's giving me a slightly faster connection on my borderline DSL connection than my Zoom did, so it may have a more sensitive chipset.
I'm very pleased with this purchase.
