What Happened?!?, January 22, 2004
By unknown
I have had V.2 of this product for nearly a year, if not longer; setup was relatively easy and it had worked fabulously, in conjunction with the Linksys Notebook Card. A few weeks ago, however, the connection to the notebook card died. I thought to myself that it was the notebook card and I needed a new system anyway so I purchased a desktop with an internal (MSoft) wireless adapter. I thought I was being smart; oh how wrong I was! Now the internal adapter senses the network, but the signal strength is so low that it cannot sign on for more than a few seconds, if at all. After repeated calls to the terribly unhelpful "technical support" (who seemed convinced that the problem was everything BUT the router - very suspicious - and who sent me firmware that refuses to install) and a sore neck from long hold times (at least 45mins. at 12AM-3AM EST!) I am convinced that this router is a lost cause. Engineered obsolescense is understandable, but a year or less is ridiculous. I'm going to purchase a new, g-level model, but it won't be Linksys.

Good for a short sprint but not for the long run, January 21, 2004
By cheekycj (Chalfont, PA USA)
I bought this Wireless router after doing quite a bit of research and getting good reviews from co-workers (even network guys) on it. I have owned it for almost 2.5 years now.I will break this down step by step: Installation: Couldn't be easier. Had the whole thing setup with my Cable Modem and my desktop in less than 30 mins and was surfing the net. in an additional 30 mins or so had my wireless laptop going and didn't have a single problem. Switching from an Orinoco or a Cisco wireless card on the laptop was easy and no problems there either. Initial Usage: It had problems. It would keep stopping and requiring a reset or a full power down/power up. I updated the firmware (keep on top of firmware updates) and this problem went away. Updating the firmware is very very easy. Performance: I will review only the wireless part this. For internet browsing and basic stuff, it performs great. No complaints here. It was a little slow on some of the more heavier network utilizing applications but its wireless you can't expect the speed of a Lan line. Range: I didn't have problems with ranges in my townhouse. It worked everywhere without any degradation. When I moved to a two story colonial, I started to see some range problems. It would work fine on the floor where the router was. On the ground floor however it would move from excellent/good to fair frequently. Sometimes just turning the laptop a certain way would do miracles. I never had a complete dropoff though. Never did try the basement :-) Features: I couldn't have asked for a more easy to configure and more featured router for my usage. Supported all the protocols (IPSEC/PPOE) for me to VPN to work. Had nice control over ports and traffic. The control of DHCP and static IP addresses was nice too. Didn't use much of the other features. Now with all that said here comes the BAD part: about a month ago, the wireless part stopped working. I was surprised at first. I checked the router. Lan activity Lights were on but not the wlan activity lights. I hit the reset button no go. Checked my desktop.. the lan connection was fine. Did a full power down and power up. Still nothing. Checked the website for firmware updates (in case I missed one that fixes something).. nope I had the latest firmware. This was on a friday so I just let it be. Saturday.. still no luck. After going nutz on Sat, I finally emailed Customer Support on Sunday. They responded fairly quickly (within hours) and after a couple and back and forth emails.. the response: "This can happen if you are under warranty we can replace it" Well the warranty is a bleak 1 year and I had had this router for 2 years...soo.. bottom line.. I am getting a new router and probably not going with Linksys again. A response of "This can happen" is not acceptable to me.

Just Returned It Today, January 20, 2004
By Play Ball (Torrance, CA United States)
This was my first wireless networking experience, using this router and a Linksys USB Wireless Adapter. At first, it worked great out of the box and I was even amazed at how simple it was to install, but then the next day the router kept dropping the connection to one of my PCs. Had to uninstall/reinstall everything and it still wouldn't work. Then all of a sudden it work work again, then stop a few hours later. It got to the point where I had had enough with the same inconsistency and unreliability that you'll read in some of these other reviews. At this point, I just don't think that any other company (Netgear or D-link, etc...) would be any more reliable. I don't think that WiFi is reliable, period. The product reviews by CNET, PCWORLD, PCMAG are never accurate for networking products because they are not tested over the long term (ie, 1-6-months, year) when they usually break or stop functioning. No one should have to buy new networking routers/adapters every 3-6 months or even a year, not at this price. Hardware like this should last at least 3-5 years, but it just isn't the case with so many of these WiFi networking products. Seems like people go through these things like they go through toner cartridges. This should not be!

Update the Firmware, January 17, 2004
By unknown
I spent hours struggling with the router trying to get it to work. Finally I went to the Linksys website and discovered that I did not have the latest firmware. I updated the firmware and it now works great. I am still waiting for a response to my email from Linksys technical support regarding this problem. A prompt response could have saved me hours of frustration.

The Wrong Way to Go, January 16, 2004
By Christopher M. Kountz (Ventura, CA United States)
I would never buy another Linksys product again in my life. They have the worst costmer service and the 2 people i talked to had no idea what they where doing so they just hung up on me. Linksys is a company that will some day fail because of its bad service

Customer service? What's that?, January 8, 2004
By Nerissa (Petaluma, CA USA)
I've had my linksys for a year now and have been relatively happy with it until recently. In the last month I can barely walk 15 feet away from my router without losing my signal. I called linksys for customer support only to spend an hour on hold, thirty minutes with a technician and to get disconnected by the technician. Following being disconnected by a technician I spent an additional four hours on hold trying to get in touch with linksys. I finally reached a human (Sheila) to find that linksys has 200 calls in the que at any time. Sheila spent fifteen minutes with me on the phone, did not fix my problem but still tried to get me off the phone claiming calls taking as long as mine is why customers have to wait so long. Sheila wanted to give me a list of MTU numbers to try on my own. I insisted on getting my technical issues resolved before hanging up the phone. Fifteen more minutes on the phone, and they may or may not be resolved. I should have an email waiting for me with updates that may fix my problems. The technician seemed more concerned with getting me off the phone than helping me fix my problem. If they are not fixed I will not call linksys back. I will not purchase another linksys system. I will seek out a new wireless router. As a busy mother of two I do not have four hours to give to linksys as a penalty for owning their product.

Time Bomb, January 7, 2004
By iankalinosky (Southbury, CT United States)
I bought this router around March 2003. No problems with installation and I have been very happy with the speed, running three machines on it.In late December, I noticed that my connection speed was down significantly. After working through my cable internet provider's technical support, they pointed me to the router. I called LinkSys and was told I needed to update the firmware. Hours of frustration later, the thing is 'dead in the water'. I undertsand that the this is a common problem over time. Now I am looking at what to replace this with. Be aware that you may buying a time bomb - may work for a while then die.

If you RTFM you'll be fine!, January 1, 2004
By andrewrm (Chicago, IL USA)
Initial setup was a bit nasty. I had two P.C.s that I wanted to network. Both could go online but not talk to each other. I disabled ZONEAlarm on the main P.C. and then it was flawless. I also have my TiVo on the network with the Lynksis usb network adaptor and all the equipment are chating away with each other quite nicely! The other P.C. states that connection is excellent but I lose about 45 percent of throughput from my cable modem but that still is over 900mps. The TiVo streams the mp3s and photos relatively well but ocaisanly hiccups especially on the music but this is a minor irritant. The cost benefit equation on this product is outstanding if you take the time to read the manual.

so easy a computer neophyte can do it, December 30, 2003
By wdhdoc (johnstown, pa USA)
I bought this product and went home with a cold sweat fearing I would have problems establishing a home network for my desk PC already connected to a cable broadband modem and my new Toshiba P25 notebook with wireless built in. Put the product CD in my desktop...which has windows XP...and it literally walked me thru about 4 screens, established the connection immediately. Then I turned on my new Toshiba (a 2.8 P4 also with windows XP), turned on the wireless button on the laptop...and started surfing the net immediately with no further ado. Then took the laptop down in my basement, and have great broadband wireless down there.Highly recommended!

Very Reliable, Strong Signal, Decent Speeds, December 28, 2003
By unknown
I've had this router for about a month now and I'm very happy with it. Installation took me over two hours. It should have only taken 20 minutes or so but I made the mistake of reading the directions. A little advice: don't read the directions, just put the CD in the drive, it'll talk you through it the *right* way. Another note, if you don't have a computer with a wired network card (I had a desktop I was also connecting, so it wasn't an issue), it might be harder to set up because, at least for a cable connection, it requires a domain name that it automatically detects. The catch is you have to detect it with your computer connected directly to your cable modem. I set up the router from my desktop computer (you can connect up to four computers by RJ45 wires) and then set up the wireless card on my laptop. Once everything is up and running, you should enable WEP encryption. The 128 bit encryption WILL slow performance, but you probably won't notice it unless your internet connection is faster than 2 megabits/sec. I'm using 64 bit encryption because I used the router to network my computers and transferring files took too long at only 1 or 2 mbits. After the initial installation, I haven't had a single problem with it. I can get a signal from anywhere in my house and it hasn't even dropped the connection below "11 mbits" yet (though I'm not actually experiencing 11 mbits :-) ). Just keep in mind this runs on the 2.4 GHz band, meaning if you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone (which I don't, thankfully), it will interfere with your connection. Supposedly a microwave can also interfere but I wouldn't know, my router and microwave are on completely opposite sides of the house. The only peculiarity I'd like to note is that I was unable to set up a network between my Windows ME laptop and my Windows 98 desktop. I've since gotten a new Windows XP desktop and it networked just fine with my laptop. Overall, an excellent router. But don't buy it if you absolutely must network your computers as it may or may not work (I would think the problem is mainly with older computers). And don't buy it if you have a 2.4 GHz phone (If you do, consider 802.11a (not b)).

Works for me!, December 23, 2003
By Russ (Anaheim, CA United States)
I had no problem switching from my hard line linksys router to the wireless. In fact, I am sitting in my backyard on my new notebook writing this. (See my review of the HP zt3010us) Even if you are a newbee to networks, you shouldn't have any problem IF you use the set-up disc; just follow the instructions and you will be on your way!Two notes of advice: 1) Do NOT set up your aol (if you have it) first before you set up you wireless on a new notebook. Lots of retracing my steps to connect to the internet. Set up the network first then worry about aol. 2) Set up the WEP so your neighbors won't find your connection when they turn on their new wireless notebook! Go into the device manager and follow the steps. RuShep

Buyer Beware, December 20, 2003
By unknown
I purchased this and the linksys usb wireless network adapter. Well the BEFW11S4 works great for about 20 minutes and then nothing works even the internal intranet is down. I called linksys about 10 times and they finally agreed to take the product back but it would cost me shipping and a fee becasue it was after 30 days that I decided to act on this major problem. So I am now trying to use it as a 4 port switch and I am still haveing trouble. I am also not to happy with the usb network adapter. Its going to be a while before I ever buy linksys again. My old Netgear router work for like 3 years and I got rid of it because it was only 10 mbps and I upgraded to the linksys 100 mbps and I wanted to use the wireless but it looks like I should have gone with netgear.

Good Product at a good price, December 15, 2003
By Bryan (USA)
For home networks, this wireless router is unparalelled. Linksys overall makes decent "prosumer" products for the home (when compared to NetGear or D-Link products, Linksys is much more reliable and easier to configure.) I read many of the reviews on here before I decided to write one myself. I do not understand alot of the trouble that people are having with this router.I almost exclusively use linksys equipment. I have found it to be the easiest and the most reliable to set up. If you are using this product, you will not need a router/bridge as one is built in. I recommend that you connect it to the linksys adsl/cable modem/router for maximum ease in administration and compatability. Otherwise, the WAN out of your ADSL or Cable box to the WAN in on your wireless is all you should need to do. Initially, the WAP will broadcast the station ID (SSID) as linksys. You'll obviously want to change that... as the one reviewer noted, Linksys is easily hackable if you do not change the default settings. I must admit I "see" and sometimes browse unprotected linksys routers around town (and even in my neighborhood). An unprotected WAP is not a good idea. You should definitely shut off the SSID broadcast once you get things established. I also recommend the WEP encryption. Be sure to write down the keys.... otherwise, you'll probably be unable to connect and have a hard time. I also recommend you allow the MAC filters. This will prohibit anyone other than your hardware from accessing the router/WAP. Even if someone hacks the WEP or finds/figures your SSID, they cannot tell the router to do anything unless they also clone your MAC address... something not easily done "blind." All in all this is a good product... worth the 60 bucks... most definitely. Personally, unless you have some compelling reason to set up 802.11g (like you are doing video conferencing over it) - 802.11b is fast enough for home environments.... especially since the FASTEST ADSL/CABLE lines usually go 3MB TOPS (and that's virtually never seen - even inside the given network). BTW - I also use my Linksys with Mac and PC's. The PC's are a bit easier to configure to use with the Linksys... but once you plug in the WEP keys into the Airport card configuration, Mac's work just fine. Linksys' is much easier to administer than Airport Base station... I'll tell you that much... and a Linksys base station is 60 versus Apple's $200 (or 100 bucks on eBay for an old Snow 2 version - 200 bucks for the Apple Extreme=802.11g standard). If you are a total novice - I recommend you stay away from wireless. Wireless products expose your PC to both the "net" and people who are wandering/close by to your physical location. If you don't know what you are doing - it is easy to "eavesdrop" on your system and hack your way in... however, if you stop broadcasting your SSID, edit your MAC filters, and enable WEP - it's going to be pretty tough to hack the way into your network.

Want trouble... buy this ..., December 15, 2003
By John R Teichman (OUTSIDE CHICAGO)
went from a dlink unit to this hunk of junk, and got the worst technical support included at no charge... at least dlink techs spent the time and figured out the problems, these buffoons take your info and don't even log the previous tech's call, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER LINKSYS PRODUCT, THEY STINK

A home network dream..., December 14, 2003
By B. Gray (Charlotte, NC, USA)
I've had mine for two years, supporting two laptops via wireless, and a Mac and Win2K Server through 10/100BaseT. Works great, and the Linksys support (which I only had to use once, about a laptop link, and they sent me a new one, no questions asked) is second to none. I've had great experiences with Linksys, and so have brand loyalty. There may be even better out there, but I can't imagine it.

A big headache..., December 14, 2003

I may not be the most network savvy guy but I program device drivers for a living and this device has just been one big headache trying to get it to work right with constant firmware upgrades. just keeps disconnecting. though latest firmware seems to work better.

The most hackable router ever?, December 13, 2003
By unknown
Initially the product worked well for me, although there were some config issues to begin with, due to old firmware. However after about 6 months the router began to reset randomly - at first I thought there was a problem with the router until one time I came back to find someone trying to surf my network - turns out that the default setting for the wireless option is enabled with no WEP encryption - so a LOCAL hacker had taken to resetting the router using an easy network call and then surfing into my network using the wireless link...it got so bad I had to change to a new product. The forums are alive with postings that show how easy it is to hack this product. I would not advise the use of this router if you have confidential information on your network.

set up a little rocky, but flawless in use, December 12, 2003
By Jackboot (Silver Spring, MD United States)
My installation of the wireless adapter card for this unit did not go well (on a win2k laptop) - my own fault, but I put the card in first, then started installing the S/W... Call to Linksys support was VERY unsatisfactory. Rude and in the biggest hurry to get off the phone! Lowest marks for customer support. After having to clean the registry(!) and re-install the drivers, everything was fine. Of course the install on my mac went flawlessly the first time. Using the laptop downstairs, upstairs, in bed, in front of the tv while still online is such a pleasure! The unit works very well. The web based interface for the router's settings is just fine. Created some firewall rules - for port forwarding to one desktop in my lan - everything works very well. Get this if you want to go wireless! Just make sure you save yourself a minor headache during the setup and RTFM!! I would definitely buy this unit again - it is worth it! I'd give it five stars except for the crappy support from linksys. Four stars.

Works flawlessly, December 10, 2003
By brjz (Norfolk, VA United States)
This wireless router was very simple to configure, the instructions were great and I did not even have to re-configure it after re-formatting my hard drive. I have had zero issues over the past 12 months even after multiple power failures (hurricanes and other acts of God) and two weeks of being disconnected when I was on vacation. You can use it wirelessly or use cable connections for 4 additional ethernet devices. It obviously is more cost effective to purchase a router for multiple ethernet connections than to have to pay your cable company for additional connections. I use it to access my company's secure network from home and the difference in performance between connecting from home or connecting at work is negligible.
