Version 2 still working... Version 4 almost worthless., December 5, 2003
By B. Bushong (Iraq)
I've had a Ver 2 of this router for about a year, and the thing works flawlessly, and I can't remember any major problems with it, once I got the latest firmware for it. I got this Ver. 4 for traveling, so I can connect to relatives' networks and use my wireless features. As a router, in a network, it would work fine for a while (an hour or two), but then would stop responding, even via hard wire. Anything going through the router would be blocked. Even the reset button wouldn't reset the box. As a gateway to my cable modem, it would never pick up its IP address from the ISP, so the entire network was without internet.

I took that one back to CompUSA, and they gave me another one. This one has worked perfectly. Now... it starts doing the same things as before. Every once in a while, it will just stop responding. I've tried a few things, like turning logging off, and enabling MTU. We'll see how it works, but I'd stay away from this one. I'm partial to Linksys, but with these problems, it's just not worth it.

Works good for me, dont know why anyone else has such problems. Usually get connection speeds of say 1.4 - 1.9 mbs on wireless. Try it yourself at www.bandwidthplace.com. I use mine to connect a laptop with Win2000 Pro(pcmcia), a desktop with WinXp home(usb), a Dell Axim PDA with PocketPC(compact flash) all wirelessly and a hard wired laptop running WinXP home. I also play games on wireless via the internet (intense games such as Battlefield 1942) with no problems (connection or speed) at all. Great product, great range, I am happy.

I bought this product around 4 years ago. I use it daily to share my cable internet connection between my two computers. This thing is great. I never had any problems whatsoever with it. You can connect up to 4 computers via Ethernet up to this baby. On top of that you can connect as many other computers as you wish via the wireless network. This particular router/access point is using the 802.11b standard. This means that the maximum wireless speed you will achieve is 10megabits which is really not bad. My slave computer (the one without the direct cable connection) can download files at 200k. Installation is very simple and the instructions are well written.

The router is designed very well. It's made from a sturdy plastic material which seems to bend a little. I haven't really dropped it but I am sure it can handle a beating. I like that the antennas pivot to a direction of your choosing and actually make the thing look cool as well. I would recommend placing this on top of a table or on any open area so that there is less interference for the wireless network(less interference equals faster connection).

Even though this product is 4 years old, it is still not outdated. I upgraded my main computer and it is now equipped with a gigabit Ethernet. Although this product doesn't support the gigabit it does support the 100mbit, which is very adequate for any home use.

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone thinking of sharing an internet connection, however, I would advise you select one of the 802.11g wireless routers since they offer higher wireless speeds.

This is my 2nd BEFW11S4. The first one I had was a version 2.0, and this one is a version 4.0. There are a few differences.
First of all, the newer model is smaller (not as tall) and it has fewer LEDs (only 1 per ethernet connection vs 3 on the older model).
Otherwise, the main difference seems to be the range. I have noticed a considerably better signal since the change, with my wireless TiVo at the far end of the house having averaged about a 50% connection quality previously and now showing a 70+% connection steadily.
Setup is identical and I find (I do have some experience with these routers, so maybe I'm just getting better with them) it fairly intuitive. Just plug it in and type in 192.168.1.1 on your address bar and voila, you're into the system. It may take a little trial and error, but especially with dynamic IPs it's pretty foolproof.
Lastly, I suppose as a consequence of competition, the price has dropped a lot. If you have a combination (wired + wireless) network, you can hardly go wrong with the new Linksys.

If you are looking to purchase this router, weigh this router's merits based on the full list price. After carefully saving my receipt, clipping out bar codes, and filling out forms I still had to wait 10 weeks to be told that my purchase was made outside of the qualifying period.

Overall, the router is fairly easy to set up. Encryption was slightly less straight forward, but still logical if you keep notes as you go.

The router signal strength is adequate but not impressive. I had to try two wireless cards in my PC before getting a signal (but this may have been the fault of my first wireless card). I have range of about 120 feet with my laptop.

After a horrifying expierience with a D-Link DWL-700AP, I tried this product. I didn't need a router, just an access point -- but I didn't have any trouble simply ignoring the router function. And strangely, routers with access points seem to be cheaper than access points alone.

After unpacking and powering up, I thought I was in for another disaster. Nothing I connected to the LAN ports would light up the corresponding link LED on the Linksys, nor would the device on the other side recognize it. I tried various devices and cables to no avail. I finally pressed the reset button, and the LAN interfaces started working. Not a very pleasant out-of-the-box experience.

Once up and running, I had no problems connecting to a Linksys Wireless-B card. I could change the WEP and SSID broadcast settings and still connect with no problems, unlike the D-Link. I've removed and installed the card, rebooted, etc. dozens of times this weekend without a hitch.

I have the unit at one end of my house on the desk, and have been accessing it from on the patio in the backyard near the other end of the house, about 50 feet away. From this location, line of sight is pretty much lengthwise through the back wall of my house, and I am typically seeing a 40% signal strength. I have not seen the link speed fall below 11 mps.

After several months using this product and trying to get VPN to work wireless, I finally got it working via the DMZ. This is very poor, since only 1 machine can now use wireless VPN. Tech support is almost non-existant. Due to the very limited VPN support, I finally threw it out and got the Netgear equivalent. With the Netgear wireless router, I can now have several PC's using VPN.

I have had a computer hard wired to a cable modem. Just got a new laptop with wi-fi. Bought the Linksys broadband wireless router. Total time to setup, connect the router and reconnect the computer was under 5 minutes. Fired up the laptop and it immediately recognized the wireless network. Now a few minutes later I a writing the review by wireless connection. This is way cool. What is the problem? You gotta get this.

I installed it and it completely locks up My Computer when I connect to my VPN. I tried calling customer service and they were no help at all. I am returning this and going with another product all together.

    My GOSH!!, November 16, 2003
By maddmatt (Huntsville, Alabama)
I had to get a new router because my old one was unable to connect with my new ISP. I bought the Linksys BEFW11S4 to connect my wired main PC and my wired laptop that I use for work. I also bought the Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter, WUSB11, to connect my daughter's PC located on the other end of the house.
Man! I have NEVER had anything associated with a computer work so well and so quickly as this gem! In less than 5 minutes of getting the wires connected to the router and the power on, I was up and running. I would hardly call the setup a configuration, it was SOOO easy! The little wireless network adapter for my daughters PC was even EASIER to get going.

Wireless version of a great product dissapoints, November 11, 2003
By M. Olsen (Salt Lake City, UT United States)
I bought a Linksys router a few years ago, and upgraded to this model after getting a new laptop with wireless capability. I enjoy the convenience of wireless, but miss the stability of my old Linksys. The only difference I've seen between the two in features and functionality is the wireless part.

Otherwise, they do the same basic things - connect to the internet via cable or DSL, and provide internet access to multiple machines through DHCP. Only my wireless router doesn't do those basic functions nearly as well.

I have to unplug the power to the router frequently to get it to reconnect to the internet (daily lately), and sometimes it just stops broadcasting a wireless signal.

Pay attention to the reviews by people who have owned the product for a while. Yes, setup is easy. Tech support may be great. But reliability in the long run just isn't there.

This isn't a bad router but for the money you could do alot better. I know most home/small office routers are plastic but this one seems flimsy. It also lacks in features in the firmware. You can only forward 10 ports etc.. In my opinion Netgear and Dlink make a better router.

Best out there, especially for the money., November 9, 2003
By tech entrepreneur (Portland, OR)
I've had two of these routers for over a year now.

I love Linksys's industrial design, especially the "stackable" nature of their networking products. The LEDs on the front are very informative and overall the product has a solid feel to it.

The wireless antenna strength is excellent. With two of these, I can cover my entire 1500sqft apartment with excellent signal strength, even on the balcony.

The web configuration is stellar, with lots of good features like port forwarding, mac address filtering, and so on.

I originally rated this item at 3 stars, because I was certain it was generating needless ICMP traffic. I have since uncovered the real source of the ICMP traffic: an infected computer on our wireless network that somehow slipped by my tests until now. I apologize for my misdirected anger toward linksys; this is a wonderful product and a superb deal.

Ironically, in my testing, I tried two other routers, the Netgear MR814 and the D-Link 604, to fix the ICMP problem. Of course it didn't help, but in the process I got to know these routers and can now confidently say the Linksys is the superior product by far.

Thought it was ok, but it's not, November 4, 2003

Well I did read all the negative stuff about this product before buying it... Didn't think to believe it.

On the first day the router crashed once, rebooting it fixed it and it worked fine for a couple of months, and now the problems are setting in. It will just stop functioning about twice a day when you're transferring data through the router continuously (eg. long downloads) and need resetting to get back on the net. The access point also goes down when this happens (stays visible but no data can pass). This is getting frustrating.

If you don't use the router function it seems to perform fine. Range is excellent. Mostly the router that disappoints. The limited (10) custom portmaps was very restrictive too.. Oh well. Hope for some firmware updates!

Version 4 rocks with New Firmware, November 3, 2003
By Mark Marshall (Orange Park, Florida)
Plugged it in and had a bit of trouble getting it to connect to the laptop. I am using a usb wireless adapter that I got from compusa. The new firmware just happen to deal specifically with that manufacturer. I installed the new firmware and Presto...Had excellent connection through out the house.

    Just lucky? I don't think so, November 2, 2003
By Claudio Peri (Santo Domingo, DN Dominican Republic)
Well, I've read some of the bad reviews and all of them seems to refer to the v4 of the product and all the positives ones refers to the v2 of the product...so make your choice!
I personally own a v2 and have recommended and installed this product to several clients and friends and we all are very happy and worries-free.
No compatibility issues of any kind: I've paired this device with different brands of wifi and wired ethernet products (Netgear, D-link, Ambicom, 3Com, USRobotics, ZyXel, Actiontec and some others).
The range is good enough for common environments, if you need some extra signal strength there is a variety of antenna upgrades out there to serve your needs and your budget.
Concluding: this is a good product, well built and reliable. I'm really sorry that Linksys is ruining his reputation with the version 4 of this device.

for some reason when I purchased this item at radio shack I thought it would work for my speedstream 5100 from SBC DSL but it doesn't. I also purchashed the wireless pci card and spent a total of 155.00 and no response thank you

I've installed 2 of these and both worked right out of the box and have worked since without incident. I will probably get another for my parents' house, which says a lot about the reliability of this thing. I guess the only downside is that it is kinda funny looking at least in my opinion; it is bright blue, boxy, has huge antlike antennas, and flashes green lights as it works. Definitely one to hide behind a plant or something.

The linksys router does everything promised. Very easy to install, I was getting around 350mps internet download. Only draw back is the router is kind of bulky unlike the netgear, but oh well.

I work hard for my money, most people do. And nothing ticks me off more than feeling completely ripped off. This router is a piece of junk, and its not just the wireless function that is a joke--connecting directly to the ports via cat5 cable won't help either. If you are a casual web surfer going here and there, then you might get away with this product. If you download anything more than 1 MB of data at any given moment then walk away. Don't look back. Buy something else. Trust me. It keeps timing out every minute. Looses the connection completely and your downloading software (or streaming media player) can't restart the connection automatically so you have to do it over and over again. I ran a diagnostic broadband speed test and comparing being jacked directly into my cable modem vs. using the wireless or wired function from the router, I get 1/3 the bandwidth if it works at all. READ ALL THE OTHER BAD REVIEWS, I AGREE WITH ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM. Buy something else.
