If you bought this for Xbox Live...., December 31, 2002
By unknown
I had to buy this to hook up my Xbox Live account. I also needed the Ethernet Bridge from Linksys as well. Absolutely no problems with the connection and playability! This router and the bridge communicate effectively between my main floor and basement.

If you're looking for a wireless connection for your Xbox, this is it!

Highly recommended. I'm using this router with my cable modem and a Linksys wireless PC card on my laptop. Installation of the router was simple and I had no problems. Installation of the PC card was simple, however the instructions were pretty much useless. When the router signal is strong, I notice no difference in speed over regular network wire. The signal is strong and fast between interior walls and upper/lower floors of the house. However, the signal drops off significantly when I go outside.

Easy to set up, works great and does what it it says. Wow!

The CD is actually not needed at all. All you need is a web browser to set it up. But I already had a network card in my computer to connect with, so that might have made it easier.

One item they should mention is to change the default network name. It's a simple and effective security move.

Works Great - Linksys provides top support, December 29, 2002

I was afraid to shell out [money] (after rebate) and another [money] for an ethernet pc card because the concept of having to set up the cable modem, router, desktop, and pc card and laptop was beyond me. But the product works great and Linksys offers great support. They walked me through the laptop setup on the phone after I installed the router (was easy) the right way myself. This is great technology at a low price.

Installation was simple, and I've had no problems with other Linksys cards attaching to the AP. WEP setup was straightforward. No complaints.

Working Great (but it took awhile), December 27, 2002

My main reason for setting up a wireless network was to be able to share a broadband internet connection with three PC's. After 11 months of hell (weak signals, lost signals, etc.)I FINALLY got the right person at Linksys technical support who recognized immediately that the router was defective. After a no-hassle return, I had a new router within a week and am now running smoothly. Be aware that this was not easy to set up and you'll probably be making some calls to technical support (still free and for the most part helpful)but in the end you'll be happy. I know that some reviewers have complained about range - currently the router is "hard-wired" to a PC on the second floor. I have wireless cards on one PC which is also on the second floor and another on the first floor (and opposite end of the house). Occasionally I'll take a notebook out on the patio with no signal problems.

Documentation lacking, but great product., December 26, 2002
By Ian F. Fritzsche (Georgia, USA)
Although the router only came with a basic quick-start guide and a Setup Wizard CD that wouldn't run on Windows 95, it got me on the net W/O wires in about 5 minutes. The router talked to the "Linksys Wireless PC Card" without any configuration at all.

I already had a switch in my house and a DHCP server in my cable modem, so I didn't use any of the routing/switching functions of the Linksys router, and it took me awhile (and a friend) to figure out how to bypass all the routing features, but once that was accomplished, the product worked great!

Although signal quality indication on the laptop wasn't as strong as I expected, the card still functioned amazingly well, and game me wireless access anywhere inside my 3,800 sq. ft. 2-story home, and even worked on the opposite side of the street.

IN SHORT - configuration of this router's advanced features can take a while to figure out, the documentation isn't that great (although there is a GOOD manual on linksys.com), but once you get it going, it is an impressive product, and well worth the effort required to get it going!

I wasn't really sure what I was getting into in trying to create a wireless network in my house. I had read several articles that gave conflicting signals on ease of installation. Although I am comfortable using computers both at home and at work, I am by no strecth a techie. My network was to consist of an IBM desktop and an iBook with an Airport card installed.
I decided to take the plunge and picked the Linksys based on nothing more than it being available and at a good price. The installation of the router could not have been simpler. Within five minutes it was installed and my internet connection was working perfectly. It went so well in fact that I was convinced it couldn't be that easy. I was sure that the iBook would never connect. Imagine my pleasant surprise when the iBook connected perfectly and at a speed that I could not discern from the wired desktop connection. One note, forget the printed instructions. The included disk gives step-by-step instructions that worked flawlessly.

I got this to eliminate my phone line across the floor. It was a breeze to hook up and configure. Only have one PC now but hope to get a pocket PC soon. Can't wait to see how that works with wireless access via a CF card. I have the router downstairs behind some furniture and out of view. PC is up stairs. Everything seems to be OK . Connection is good to excellent. So far I am sold on wireless technology.

just plain awful, December 20, 2002

Set this up on a desktop running Windows 2000 and a laptop running Windows XP. The setup utility that came with the linksys was just awful, it was difficult to setup, the configuration did not work with XP, and new drivers were needed that still don't work properly.

By comparison, an install with dlink went seemlessly and has performed without fault from the start. In my opinion, I'd go with the d-link everytime...

I would hold off on buying this one ( Model BEFW11S4 V.2 )
Anytime a cordless phone is used in the house it knocks out my wireless connection.
Otherwise it works great when the cordless phone is not used.

They do have a new version 5 Ghz.
Too late for me,

I have the Wireless Router and PC Card and love it! I've owned it over 6 months so I have the older version of the router. I downloaded the upgraded firmware and found the system worked better (rarely do I have to do a soft reset on the router). Buying the new PC Card WPC11 (v3) also increased the range so now I can receive good to excellent signals throughout my whole house.
The only problem I had was with security. WEP caused me problems when I went on stand-by on my laptop. I removed WEP and changed: the password on the router, the SSID code, enabled MAC filtering and turned off SSID broadcast. These changes makes my Wireless network more secure and is still stable.

    Solid!, December 16, 2002

I installed this unit and it works great.

Out of the box I read the easy set-up instructions and connected the router to my cable modem and then into the desktop computer (hard-wired into the router with a cat-5 cable). I had then realized that the internet connection was lost on the desktop computer. I figured that nothing would be that easy although it would have been nice to get going right away. I ended up just having to re-boot the computer a couple of times for Windows ME to recognize the router and then it was smooth sailing. My best buddy put his Linksys Wireless Router on his computer, which runs Win 2000, and that was a flawless setup.

A day later the Linksys wireless laptop card came in the mail and it was literally plug-and-play. I believe it had to be rebooted once or maybe twice. No signal loss at all.

I have read all the reviews about people having serious troubles. There is a ver 2 of this router which I got and I would assume anyone who bought it from today on would also recieve the same version. Remember, computers are very touchy! They are all set up in many different ways with many different software configurations. If people cannot get these things working then it is probably the computer. If your computer is prone to problems or you have had troubles installing items in the past then don't expect this to be a cakewalk. The tech reps from Linksys are only there to help you set your router up. If there are problems then they will try and determine if their product is defective. If not then it isn't their problem. They are not there to reconfigure Windows or anything else on your computer. That is what Microsoft or the other SOFTWARE manufacturers are for.

Yes, this product did install some-what smoothly. Yes, I had relatively little trouble with getting everything to work. However, I am rating this product according to its performance. If I had troubles installing this equipment I would still give it a five-star rating. It is a very solid piece of equipment. There is no signal loss between the Linksys Wireless laptop card and the Linksys router. The speed is fantastic, and I am going to add another desktop computer to see how good the Linksys Wireless PCI card is. Also, remember that it is always good to have the brand of the wireless cards match up with the brand of the wireless router. I realize that they are supposed to work with any router but it's always beneficial to keep the number of brand names down to a minimum.

Good Luck!

Works Great for XBOX, December 15, 2002

The BEFW11S4 v2 and WET11 work perfectly with my XBOX. Easy setup, out of box and playing games in about 20 minutes. The router is on the second floor and the bridge is in the basement. No lag! No cables strung around the house! This product fit the bill nicely.

Stay away from Linksys, December 15, 2002
By Darrell Teague (Pearland, TX United States)
WARNING - STAY AWAY OF LINKSYS WIRELESS ROUTERS
I've encountered nothing but problems with 3 different units. The first unit had very poor signal strength and quality. The next two units kept dropping, on average, 75% of the IP packets. How can you surf the web if your browser keeps timing out...I'll never purchase another Linksys product again eventhough I will say that the support and service is good. ...

    Amazing Product, December 14, 2002
By Peter Imes (Austin, TX United States)
I bought this wireless router after having a normal Linksys router for several years because the person renting my detached garage apartment wanted to get internet access, but didn't want to install new phone jacks. I was worried that the signal wouldn't reach through 2 exterior walls and about 60 feet, but I installed the card and was immediately able to receive a signal from the apartment. The setup was very easy and now I can take the computer anywhere in the house (or outside) and still be on the net. And the tech support people are very helpful.

I had some reservations about buying another ... wireless router after my previous experiences with Netgear (which could not even connect from my basement to the main floor 2 feet away), but with the Linksys I have no issues at all with connecting through 2 floors and multiple walls - even at 200+ feet away. The configuration guide is severely lacking, but as long as you can get to the internet and download the guide off their website (ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/befw11s4_v2ug.pdf), I would heartily recommend this product. I am using Orinoco gold cards to connect to the router.

Help Desk Useless and Forget About Using the Phone, December 11, 2002
By Andrew O'Hare, (Plymouth, Devon United Kingdom)
Whilst this product revolutionizes the way you access and browse the internet and is great for multiple access points (we have 2 laptops) it falls short in a number of areas.

The primary problem is that that it interferes with all phones - even non wireless fixed lines. For our cordless phone (we are on our 3rd) we have tried the 900mhz, 2.4ghz and the latest 5+ ghz cordless phones. It is hopeless.

Anyway, when it comes down to it I'd prefer to loose the phones rather than my wireless connection so i guess we are stuck!

Things you need to know before you go wireless..., December 9, 2002
By Shikharesh Das (Singapore)
I upgraded from a Netpassage 15 to this unit when I moved house. The wireless connectivity gave me the freedom over laying new cables I would have to mess with otherwise.

Initially I had lot of performance issues - downloading the new firmware from the Linksys site helped. But the performance would still be inconsistant - very troublesome for family when I was away on business. Anyway Linksys offerd to replace my unit after hearing the issues and gave me a version B. I must say the unit has been operating without trouble from then on.

My advise for people buying this unit (because the unit will ultimately work to specs):
1. Should have basic knowledge of networking. a) start with the book "Networking for Dummies"! b) read the user manual by downloading from the Linksys website. If you are comfortable - go for it.
2. Install the unit closer to the phone line with ADSL modem and the PC most used for faster applications and connect this one with cable instead of wireless. It saves cost of one network adapter and also cable works at 100 MPBS and wireless is at 11MPBS. Use a longer phone cable to the modem if neccessary.
3. For wireless network adapters, preferably buy the WUSB11 over PCMCIA cards. It can also be used equally on PCs or the ocassionally on the laptop for the work you bring home!
4. Try a 'trial' set up to test signal strength is sufficient before you put the nail on the wall...you may need to re-position the units. I was troubled by the steel computer table of one of the PCs - this was impeding the wireless signal - repositioning the adapter to the top of monitor helped.
4. If using ADSL, check out their new combined DSL modem/router unit -saves space.
5. If you lose internet connection, boot up in sequence > Modem > Router > PC. Teach other users this too.
6. Have a 'guru' friend handy - most of the time more useful than online tech support (I dont insinuate on line support is bad quality!)
7. Ocassionally check for new firmwares on the web site. This may fix some stability issues.
8. Change the default SSID settings and activate WEP on the router (wirless encryption protocol) - otherwise your neighbour can use your connection for free - worse he may be hacking a network using your IP address!
9. Finally - if you can do with cables - go for cable base routers - much easier to install, faster, cheaper and stable. My Netpasage 15 router performs flawlessly after four years. But thats not so hep...
