Simple installation and worked the first time, November 22, 2002
By unknown
Just followed the instructions on the CD and had it talking to my laptop and cable modem in five minutes. I then installed an Orinoco network card in another PC and an Apple AirPort card in an iBook which were located in other rooms of the house. In both cases, they picked up the signal right away and worked the first time.

It couldn't possibly be any easier. Great product!

I purchased this along with the Linksys wireless card several months ago and have not had any problems with it.

Installation was a breeze. After attaching the router to my computer and cable modem, I downloaded the firmware update. Following the instructions in the guide accompanying the Router, I made sure all the settings were correct for my Win 98 and Win 2000 systems. Everything worked fine on the first try.

My Win 98 desktop is attached to the router with a Cat 5 cable (you'll probably want to get one of these if you don't have an extra: Belkin A3L791-07-S Category 5e Snagless Patch Cable). I often use both my desktop and my laptop at the same time without any problem. I have also been able to FTP to my laptop from my desktop when transferring large files.

The biggest benefit is I can use my laptop anywhere in my condo and the surrounding area. I can actually take my laptop to the restaurant downstairs and work while eating lunch.

Because of this relatively wide area of connectivity, I decided to enable the WEP 128-bit security. Using the passphrase method worked fine, and I haven't noticed a reduction in speed (though I assume there is).

I don't have any information about using this router with other wireless cards, so I can't comment on compatibility other than the 128-bit security is listed as proprietary to Linksys. If you already have a card from another manufacturer, you might try a router from them or find a friend or business with a wireless router that you can test against.

Easy to use and works like a charm, November 20, 2002
By teacher643 (Baltimore, Md United States)
I purchased this item to replace the linksys 4 port router I already had been using (also a good deal) and now have this set up in my house. I am using two iBooks and an IBM laptop. The Macs took about 10 minutes to set up, the PC quite a bit longer. The wireless router was easy to set up and the tech people at Linksys are 2nd to none. When I had a problem setting up the IBM laptop I called IBM's tech service and received no help at all. I called Linksys's 800 # and they helped me configure the laptop. I am really impressed with the service and the device - good signal strength, easy set up and smart tech service people - nothing more to ask for

I set this up with a DLink cable modem and 2 computers running XP. I have used both an Orinco and Cisco wireless card in my laptop and they both worked great with the router. My desktop computer has Linksys PCI network card that works great with the router too. The setup was very staight forward. I have a small home with 1000 square feet and have great signal strength throughout the house.

Beware of firmware updates, November 19, 2002
By unknown
I had (emphasis on had) a befw11s4 ver. 2 router. In an attempt to remedy some strange VPN problems, I tried upgrading to the 1.43.3 firmware. BIG MISTAKE. The update program lost connectivity with the router during the flashing process, resulting in a dead router. I even managed to duplicate this activity on another router just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. A call to their tech support confirmed that this is a problem other users are experiencing, yet the faulty firmware is still available for download. If it works out of the box for you, great. But be careful if you decide to update the firmware.

Much better than the original!, November 18, 2002
By mattfl1 (Naples, FL United States)
I had to sell my version 1.0 Linksys router due to problems I was having using FTP. Everytime I would try to use it, the router would reset itself...very strange. I think it might have to do with the fact that I'm running a Mac network, and Linksys primarily caters to Windows users. Plus, I was having trouble using the wireless connection throughout parts of the house.

I tried several other routers and wasn't very pleased. They didn't perform as well as the Linksys, despite the FTP problem. After Linksys released this new version, I purchased it hoping that it would work better than the original. It does! The wireless signal works better now that it's a 2.4ghz signal. Plus my FTP problem went away (once I went to Linksys' website and upgraded the router's firmware to the latest version). I highly recommend it.

This worked like a dream, on Cox cable and it offered my wired network full conectivity and my laptop and handheld conections too. The wireless is in my basement and I am getting 40-50 feet with 80% signal 2 floors up, love it!

I own a Linksys Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router and Linksys Wireless Notebook Card. I am impressed with the Link Quality and the Signal Strength. As I write this review, I am in the bedroom typing on my wireless Vaio Notebook. My Linksys ROuter connects the server in the family room - other side of the house. I further use the Linksys Wireless Router to stream a live daily webcast in stereo from my home office. The Linksys WIreless Router and Wireless Notebook Card are a smart buy and will offer you tremendous value!

Oh yeah, I drink coffee on the front porch with my wireless notebook. Video streams, mp3 streams download at 300k and up from my cable modem in the house.

To identify the clients allowed to use the wireless service, user can set the WEP key and/or
lock the MAC addresses. However, the setup interface for the client MAC addresses is
not clear. You have to try it few times to understand how it works. The other problem
is the disconnection after an idle period. The router will disconnect your connections
such as ssh after an idle period. This is not good if you are remotely running long jobs and
need to wait online for the results. For everything else so far, I would say this is a good router.

Linksys Wireless 4 Port Router, November 10, 2002
By Maurice C Lane (Gilroy, California United States)
I purchased the router and two instant wireless network PC cards after reading several positive reviews. I was up and ruuning in about 25 minutes. I have not tested the extreme limits with the laptops, however it works well anywhere in the house.

configuration and tech support suck big time, November 10, 2002
By S. Carlson (Canada)
This product may or may not work. I really don't know, because I was unable to connect to the URL for the web based router configuration utility. Rather than including a configuration program on disk with the router, Linksys chose to have their configuration program reside on their web site. You need to access this utility in order to change anything to do with either the router setup or the wireless setup. After literally hundreds of unsuccessful attempts to connect, I called tech support. They said that the site was "busy", and that I should keep trying. Do yourself a favor and buy a product from another company, like d-link. Make sure you buy a product which you can configure without having to go online.

Extremely easy to use and configure, November 10, 2002
By jayshao (Piscataway, NJ USA)
An excellent administrative interface and installation guide have made it clear that this is a second or third generation product. I installed it without even consulting the documentation, with the only snag being a need to change the default IP address to account for the fact that I actually have it chained to a second router. All in all an excellent product, with much better range than the results of paring it with Linksys's client cards would suggest.

Works great, but configuring for AOL is a pain, November 8, 2002
By dinks443 (Philadelphia, PA United States)
I have an AOL broadband connection at home. Configuring this router to work with AOL broadband was tough!! After connecting the router and following the steps mentioned in the manual, AOL could not detect the DSL modem.Had to call up the technical support and found that i needed to download and install the firmware version 1.43 (the one already installed was 1.42.7, and 1.43 has added support for AOL Broadband). Did that, but still the same problem! Then called up tech. support again...that guy couldnt handle the problem and directed me to AOL support. Thankfully, the AOL tech. support guys are pretty competent ( and they must've got hundreds of similar calls before!) and now i am on my way. The router works great, just the initial part of configuring it was messy. And i also bought the linksys wireless card. That was real easy to install, no problem at all with that.
You can password protect your network so that there can be no intruders and there are some other advanced security features as well.
So, overall a great router.

Excellent Smooth Working, November 7, 2002

I have installed many of these units in homes, and have only had a couple of problems. Which we were able to quickly figure out, and after changing the channel it was smooth sailing. Recomend this product to anyone interested in hooking up a wireless network in the office, or just for home. Unbeatable price powerfull features

So far so good...., November 7, 2002

I purchased this product...about 3 weeks ago and have had no problems. I am not a network expert, but I found the setup fairly straight forward; connected the router to my DirectTV DSL gateway, connected my desktop to one of the router's ports and connected my laptop wirelessly with no problems. I must say I'm pretty happy with this product so far.

    EASY Setup!, November 6, 2002
By Robert Spellings Jr. (Eugene, or United States)
I bought this and paid (Money) from a local store about 18 months ago. I took it home along with a PCMCIA card for my laptop. With the aid of the quickstart card, I was up and running in 10 minutes flat! I had never messed with 802.11b before.

Additionally, Linksys support has been outstanding compared to other tech companies. They had the wrong Firmware update on their site and I downloaded it and tried to install it and it fried my router. I called them and was actually able to speak to a person! They kept escalating my call to higher levels of tech cupport and was able to reverse the effects of the damaging incorrect firmware. Kudos to Linksys!

Support bad; no firmware upgrades, November 3, 2002
By nymike (Chappaqua, Ny)
It is not clear if this is a v1 or v2 system. The v1 has not received firmware upgrades for a long time now, altough it is still being sold. Essentially, Linksys has dropped support, concentrating on the newer v2.

Here are two things to consider: (1) you don't know whether you will get a v1 or v2, and if you get the old one you are stuck (like me -- and they will not replace for a v2) and (2) if they treat their v1 customers this way, do you think they would do it also to their v2 customers?

D-Link has fabulous products, so does Speedstream and SMC and Belkin.

Great Wireless with a little work, November 2, 2002
By atteSmythe (Garfield Hts., OH United States)
I own the Linksys WMP-11 PCI card and a Linksys Wireless 4-port Cable/DSL router. I had a 10/100 ethernet card in my machine and was running off of the router for a good long time, so I knew the router settings were correct before I went to install my wireless card.

When the day came, I disconnected the wired network, installed the wireless software, and put the card in my machine. I powered back up, and although I had 100% signal strength and 100% signal quality, the link was terrible - I could only download a few KB of data before losing a link, and I couldn't even connect to my router's configuration page.

I made a quick call to Technical Support and they suggested that I upgrade my drivers and firmware in both products. I was skeptical, but I did anyway, and it worked just fine. Since then, I've moved my router to the basement, two floors below my computer, with floors and walls in the way, and you'd never even know. I run with good signal strength and quality, and I never notice loss of connection or errors on downloads. I've been very, very pleased with this purchase!

    Linksys BERFS41 Router - Great for a home network, November 2, 2002
By unknown
Out of the box, it takes about five minutes to set this router up. It acts as a router for your broadband DSL or Cable Modem, as a 10/100mbit switch, and also as a fairly secure firewall for your network.

I've owned one of these for about two and a half years now and have yet to have a problem with it.

Couple of things to note:
By default - Allowing administration of the router from the interet is turned *ON* - First order of the day is to turn this *OFF* unless you really need to have access to it from the internet.

Easy to set up. Older home with thick walls limits usable distance. No interference. No problems. Looks good. Good support from Linksys.
