Works Well, Setup was a Snap, June 8, 2002
By asiab (Bellevue, WA United States)
I'm a home owner and a small business owner, and I think setup was a snap. You plug it in, you make your configurations, and it works like a charm. I don't know what to compare this with since its the only one that I need. Highly recommended. Problems with the router might actually be problems with the card. Exchange the card and see what happens. Overall, a great introduction to the wireless experience.

Contrary to what others say, this router works well, June 3, 2002
By Thomas A. Carlson (AZ, United States)
I spent a lot of time reading the reviews about wireless access points and wireless routers. I finally decided on the Linksys router and the Netgear MA 301/401 interface card. So, here's the deal. I have a PII-400 running Win98 that is connected to the router using Cat 5 cable, which is then connected to a cable modem. For those of you who don't know, Cat 5 cable is simply the standard ethernet cable. I then installed the MA 301/401 combo on another computer, a Packard Bell PII-233 running Win95. Unfortunately Win95 had an IRQ conflict with the PCI card (MA 301) that could not be resolved. I installed Win98 and the IRQ conflict disappeared. After getting the Packard Bell system set up, the MA 301/401 would not link up with the Linksys router. I called Netgear tech support and discovered that the SSID on the card must be identical to the SSID on the router. I discovered that the Linksys SSID was "linksys" and the SSID on the card was "Linksys." When I changed the "L" to an "l", the card connected to the router immediately and I was in business. The Packard Bell machine is on the 2nd floor of my townhouse and the Linksys router is in the basement. The signal, therefore, is passing thru 2 floors and 2 walls. The link quality and signal strength are consistently in the "good" category and sometimes they are "excellent." These are qualitative measures reported by the Netgear card's software. As for performance, I downloaded a 19MB file off Microsoft's web site and it took less than 5 minutes via the wireless connection. I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive about buying the Linksys router. The reviews are mixed and some people have totally trashed it. I decided to give it a try, figuring that I would return it if it didn't work well. The same thing for the MA301/401 card; some loved it and some hated it. I was also concerned that having a router and card from different manufacturers would cause problems. It turns out that I didn't need to be concerned at all because both pieces are working perfectly. Contrary to what others have said, my connection has not been lost and it takes only a few seconds to establish the wireless connection on startup. I have found that the documentation provided with both items was adequate. However, I wish each of them would have mentioned the importance of having the same SSID on the router and the card. I have not talked with Linksys tech support, but the two calls to Netgear went well. Things to watch out for: 1)The Netgear MA 301, which is the PCI card that plugs into the desktop computer must be used with the Netgear MA 401 wireless PC card. This PC card will also fit in a laptop. 2) As I mentioned, the SSID must be the same on both pieces of hardware. 3)I have not activated the WEP encryption so I have no idea how it will affect performance. The bottom line: I highly recommend the Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 router and the Netgear MA 301/401 interface card.

the software makes it easy, June 3, 2002
By unknown
The CD you get with the hardware makes the whole process so simple. I had to get this with my ATTbi, according to the ISP. I initially tried to use another brand with my ATTbi, but it failed to work. I don't have my network certification, nor do I really work with networks...so this was a snap to connect & get connected with our laptop which receives the wireless transmission via a Linksys USB Network Adaptor.

Great product, great price!, June 1, 2002

You want marketing for this product? How's this for marketing...I am an engineer for Cisco Systems and I use this product in my home. Fair enough? I still have to deduct a star though because I would feel more comfortable with slightly more advanced security features, but then it might not be user friendly enough for less advanced folks (and perhaps more $$$ as well). There are also known issues with WEP, but let's be realistic here folks... How many people are trying to crack your home network from your front yard? Just remember to change your WEP key every so often and be on the lookout for suspicious looking individuals hanging out around your home with a PC.

Worked out of the box for me., June 1, 2002
By Eric Chang (San Mateo, CA)
I got this thing set up in about 30 minutes. Took another 15-30 minutes to set up my computers with their wireless cards. I have linksys in a laptop, a linksys PCI card in a desktop, and a Cisco card in another laptop. They all work well and I am pretty pleased with the results. For those of you sitting on the fence because you think it will be a pain to set up: read the instructions before you start. The set up is not that hard, just go slow. The worst that will happen is you wasted a few hours and you return it.

Excellent Value, May 31, 2002
By Paul Charlesworth (Houghton, MI USA)
I have had the router for over one year now without any problems. The indoor range could be a little better, but I think the electronics and walls in the house are not helping much. I know this is a house problem because I get better signal strength outside and down the street than in my front room. The router is instantly configured out of the box. I didnt have to do anything. Anyone who says they are having problems, is describing a problem of their own creation. I have two Apple desktops, one Gateway, one apple airport Tibook, and two Sony VAIO laptops connected to this thing without a glitch. The wireless is being accessed from a combination of Linksys, Orinoco, and Farallon PCCards without any setup issues. The only minor issure was knowning that I needed to change one setting on the router to allow airport access. If you are looking for a router, this is THE one to get. If you have a huge house, or have to place the router in a corner., consider getting two and sticking one at each end of the house for full overlapping coverage. You'll never look back.

The easiest computer component I've ever set up!, May 31, 2002
By Natalie Kilpatrick (Omaha, NE United States)
Wow, if you want wireless, this is the way to go! After picking up my new laptop and all other accessories to go with it, including this router by Linksys, I will never recommend another to set up in your home!It was so simple to setup... Plug the network cable into the router from the Cable/DSL modem, plug the network cable into the computer from the router... Throw the disk in the computer... BAM! You're done! This was all done with the Windows 2000 Pro machine STILL RUNNING. Everything has run flawlessly. I live in a 1200 sq. ft. home, and I can go anywhere with this router hooked up. Why I gave it four stars... I run a web page off of my computer, and it's been hell trying to figure out how to get that up and running. I found out I need to shut DHCP off, but when I do that, I loose the laptop when I restart it. (Any help out there?) This has truly got to be what anyone wanting to go wireless needs! It's better than paying another company to set it up. It's just so simple! Okay... Update! On 6/28/02 (a month since I bought it), it stopped working. I tried everything in the book to get it working again, nothing. Today (7/19/02) I finally called Linksys, tried everything they said, and now the cable modem can't even see it. They have to send me a new one, we'll see how that works out. They do have very nice customer support, though, and they do everything to make you happy. In being on the phone for less than 7 minutes, they set me up to have the new one mailed to me... Just make sure to keep your receipt!

Nice unit!, May 29, 2002
By MarcusAM (Peabody, MA United States)
I purchased this unit with the WPC11 card about a month ago. This is a great system. It took me only 5 minutes to set it up. I have a Dell Dimension 4100 Desktop hooked up to one of the four ports (10/100), and I have my Dell Latitude CPx laptop connected to it using the WPC11 card. The only problem that you might have with this unit is that it's on a cluttered 2.4GHz frequency, and you may see some interference with other devices on it. The 5GHz or 802.11a units are available for sale now, but the price for this unit is almost double the cost. If you want a nice system this is the one for you. Have fun...

Works Like a Charm, May 29, 2002
By Bruce D. Namerow (Washington, DC)
I've had this wireless router for about six months and haven't had a single issue. It runs three computers, two with Windows XP and the other with Windows ME. Set-up was pretty easy, although it did take a call to customer support to figure out how to work around some cable modem issues. I've been very happy with the throughput, although I'm never too far from the base station.

Serves my needs fairly well., May 28, 2002
By Ergolad (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I tried the SMC Barricade, thought about the Nexland Wavebase and ended up with the Linksys. The expense of the Wavebase & lack of comparative reviews ruled that one out. The SMC range was not that good in my space (lath and plaster) & it slowed my DSL connection over time requiring periodic resets. At the time I'd upgraded it to the most recent firmware. It DID have nice security features which I appreciated. The Linksys Version 2, however, went the distance (pun intended). I tried the Version 1 and was happy with that, but V2 had even better range. What I DO NOT like about the Linksys is it's lack of basic security features. Though there is support for WEP, the type of MAC filtering available isn't really helpful for keeping OUT computers. We all know that 802.11B is a security hole waiting to be exploited. I just assume put as many locks on as possible, weak or not. If you do a search for wireless network security, some basic things are always listed. Not only are these not really supported by the Linksys, but in my experience Linksys tech support was fairly clueless about how to secure the router from Wardriving. I have read that a recent firmware release for the V2 is available to address some of these issues, but I have read mixed reviews. I'll wait a bit and see how it matures. For what it's worth I run it wired and wireless on an Orinoco Gold mostly for sharing a PPPoE DSL connection and rarely do much file and print sharing. ... I have since upgraded to the most recent official firmware and am pleased that the security features that I have been looking for have now been included. The MAC filtering that I was waiting for is a little hard to find, as it is in the ADVANCED/WIRELESS area under the title "Station MAC Filter". And at the time of my install there were no instructions available for the new features. I'm not sure if there are now.

For those that are interested in setting up a wireless network but also have computers that want to be wired this is the product for you. Setup was extremely easy for me and i have somewhat or a good knowledge about computers only took me about 5 minutes!! Downside is you actually have to physically connect in order to access the thing and setup the wireless network. I have the Version 2 of this product so i don't know about how well version 1 is. Range is excellent in my opinion for my apartment. I also didn't have troulbe using a different brand for my wireless card to connect to it. Go get this product!!!

Good router unless you video conference, May 26, 2002
By colsanders83 (Holley, NY United States)
I bought this router so that I could surf the net or access my network from anywhere in my house or front yard. When I got it home and set it up it appeared to work like a dream. All I really had to do is plug in my cable modem an go. The problem didn't show up until I tried to video conference with my mom. She could hear and see me, but I could not hear or see her. After going through the trouble shooter and trying all sorts of different security and port authorization changes I finally gave up and called Linksys. When I got ahold of someone and I explained the problem they told me that they probably would not be able to help because this router does not work well with video. After a couple more changes it was determined that video conferenceing was just not possible with this router. A huge disappointment for me and my mom. If it wasn't for the video this router would have received 5 stars.

This is a great product!, May 26, 2002

I purchased mine about 6 months ago and it has worked flawlessly. I use both both cable and wireless connections on this and it works great. It was easy to setup and configure for my ISP - DSL service. I have a mixture of PC and Mac computer in my house and the Mac's with Apple's AirPort cards work perfect with the Linksys router. The router is in the basement of a 2 story house with brick and plaster walls and I can connect anywhere without problems. If you are looking for simplicity and a reliable product - this is it!

Best $150 I've spent in a long time., May 26, 2002
By LG (Redwood City, CA United States)
After reading the reviews of the most popular wireless routers I decided to go to my local [electronic store] to get one (which is 5 minutes away) so I could return it easily in case any problems occured. I installed the router in about 5 minutes and it worked like a charm on my direct wired PC (Win 98). I started to get excited because my network performance actually improved with the router installed (I have AT&T broadband). Next on the list was my laptop. I bought the least expensive Linksys PCMCIA card and once again had no problems with the install (10 minutes) on Win ME. And guess what, it worked the first time and I was surfing at 86% of 11MB from the recliner in my living room. So let's add this up. 5 minutes for the router + 10 minutes for the PCMCIA = both machines networked and running great for only [a price]. Let's be serious, this is just about the best thing you can do with [money] for your computers. As soon as I can I am going to get this setup for my laptop at work (then I can also use it on my LAN at home).

I love it so much that I did it again!, May 25, 2002
By hantla.com (Chandler, AZ United States)
I've never networked anything before using this, and I have successfully created two different wireless networks. I used the BEFW11S4 to set up a wireless network in my two story house (~1500 square feet), and I don't have a dead spot in the entire house. Not only that, but I am able to use my laptop at the pool, over 100 feet away. It was a little bit tricky to set up because the router had the same IP as my modem. But after getting this figured out and simply changing the IP of the router (which is extremely easy with the setup utility), the network worked very well. Now I am in a house in Mexico which is made out of solid concrete and rebar. This does create an issue with distance, but we fixed that by setting up the router in the middle of the house, that way we still get our 11 Mbps here in the office and on the other side of the house. The greatest benefit of the router, though was its MAC address cloning ability. Even though our ISP here limits our access to a single computer which it recognizes (I learned after a couple hours of messing around with different options) by the MAC address of the network adapter card, we were able to connect an entire house of computers (>5) with the hub by simply (again using the awesome configuration utility) having the Linksys router change its MAC address to match the network adapter of the old computer. Now we have wireless access in the states, and we can bring the laptop to my parents house here in Mexico and instantly get service here. PROS *Can use inexpensive ISP service to a single computer to give internet and network access to multiple computers. *Can offer both wireless and wired (up to 4 computers wirelessly) connectivity. *Maintains speed up to 50 feet away through 3 6-inch walls filled with concrete and rebar. *Easy to set up. *Great configuration/setup utility which is accessable through a web browser (firmware is also upgradable by downloading an update from the website.) CONS *It does show a loss in speed or even in connectivity in certain "dead spots" in the house. (To fix this, you just scoot over like 3 feet in either direction and it goes from 0% to 50%). *Poor customer support over the phone. I bought a second one based on my experience with the first one. As I discover more and more about what this unit is capable of doing, it makes me more and more willing to recommend it. So that's what I'm doing: "I recommend that you get this router/WAP."

Super easy to use right out of the box, May 25, 2002
By John J. Cheyney (Irving, Texas United States)
I bought this to setup a wireless network so I can share my cable modem between both my computers (desktop and laptop). It will probably take me longer to write this review than to get the router up and functional. Brings plug and play to a whole new level, very easy to use interface.

Good solution, May 24, 2002
By unknown
This is a good solution for a basic networking setup. I use it at the dorms in college (3ft thick concrete) and get ok to good reception, and at home it's near perfect. I have no complaints. If you have a laptop, go wireless.

Decent for most applications. Slow on firmware release, May 22, 2002
By panchero (Plymouth, MI)
This wireless router lags behind in features to the more popular "non-wireless" linksys routers. One major feature missing is UPNP, which allows certain applications to function: MSN Messenger for example. If you need to use meesenger for voice chats, look else where.
