LINKSYS 4 PORT WIRELESS ROUTER, March 26, 2002
By unknown
This unit installs and works just as claimed. I've installed at least 3 of them and each one is easier than before. As long as you have familiarity with the setting to make on the network adapters, either wired or wireless, this unit is superb. I like to use it with the WUSB11 wireless adapter for either notebook or desktop. All you need is a functioning USB port. Throughput is as claimed--11Mbps. 5 stars and good price.

This product is the best of simplicity. Had this router and its sister PC card working in under 15 minutes. Extremely user friendly....only basic computer knowledge is required. Range is good (ref. Russell Crowe in "Gladiator").

Very nice and Easy to set it up
I plug it into my Linksys hub and turn on the power press reset swithch on the router. It is ready to go. paired with Orinoco Gold never dropped the signal once. but when my 2.4Ghz cordless phone is in use the signal will be dropped I guess this is normal since both devices operates in same digital frequency range. You can use this device as a single access point or use it as a router. it works both ways.
right now my configuration is cable modem router canceled my additional ip to save money.
now I use only 1 IP for multiple computers.

A great product for your home network, March 24, 2002

If you are in the market for a router for your broadband connection, I would give serious thought to this product. It takes Linksys's 4 port router/switch and adds a wireless access point. And if you check the price, it's about the same cost as a stand alone access point. If you want to connect several PC's in different rooms, or be able to work on a laptop from any room in your house, I would highly recomend this product.

The only reason that I didn't give this product 5 starts was the wireless abilties of this product. While it works great for surfing the web, it does seem slower than access points from Cisco, but at about 1/3 the cost. For price / performance this product rocks. I only notice the slowdown when I transfer large files (100M+) so for your day to day duties, the speed is fine. As for the distance, I can go anywhere in my home with my laptop and still be connected. I would also like to note that I am using a Cisco PC card. Also I have a very open floor plan that helps.

If you do decide on this product, there are 2 things that you need to do as soon as you turn it on. These are security issues that need to be addressed. First, change the ESSID. This will prevent your neighbors from connecting to your network if they have the same product. Second, enable DES. This will encript the data, and will make it almost impossible to connect to your home network.

One final note, if you are using a notebook that your employer supplied you with, check with your IT/IS department before you start making changes to the configuration. We would rather answer your questions and help you BEFORE you break it then after.

    Pretty decent, March 23, 2002
By Joel Ipe (East Windsor, NJ United States)
Installed it last night to sit between an iMAC and an IBM Thinkpad. The iMAC has a standard ethernet card, while the Thinkpad is using the Linksys Wireless card. Works pretty well. I couldn't get the router a WAN IP address until i reset the cable modem. The documentation isn't the greatest however, which is the only minus. Signal strength is pretty good in a pre-WWII apartment.

Dont expect this to work right out of thebox, it takes a bit of tweaking when setting up with a PC wireless card. I called Tech Support and only had to wait about 5 minutes and the tech was very helpful and resolved the issues. Now the PC wireless card and Wireless router work great!! A great product, but allow some time and patience for set-up.

This is a great unit for a great price. It comes with a NAT firewall too!!! The setup was easy and painless.

Terrible Customer Service, March 23, 2002
By T. Lockwood (San Jose, CA USA)
The Linksys product may be okay, but God help you if you need customer service! I bought the BEFW11S4 (their wireless router), and couldn't get it to install with my DSL modem. Four evenings I spent on the phone, in their service queue: a total of 6 hours, and NEVER did anyone answer the phone. Their call center system told me that the average wait time was 10 minutes, and after an hour and a half I had to hang up (there are others in the house who need to use the phone).

I took the system back and bought one from Siemens. I did have a problem installing that one as well, but got through to a service rep in 6 minutes. Works great!

Night and day. If I were you, I'd avoid this company if I could. I'll never buy another product from them.

If I knew what I know today I wouldn't touch this product with a 10' pole.
Can't go 2 weeks with it, without it getting confused, and stop working, the only thing is working on it is red lights blinking. After a month I have to send it back to linksys, and deal with there restrictions on a product...

I have only been using this for a couple of days, but I already love it. I can't wait for summer, so I can work outside from my lawn chair.

Only one problem. I did not know that I had to call AT&T Broadband to give them my MAC address. That was a waste of about 30-45 minutes. I should have read some of the other reviews first.

Wonderful product! Go pick one up!

this device was very easy to install and very little configuration necessary. Wireless == freedom from cat 5 cables in a big way!!

Also, it's loaded with a lot of features.

Received the LinkSys DSL Wireless Router along with a wireless PCMCIA card for my laptop and a USB Wireless Adapter for my desktop. Setup took less than 30 minutes and I am not very technical. What a great product!

Download the latest drivers, March 18, 2002
By unknown
Word of advice - Download the latest drivers/firmware from the Linksys web site before you get started. This is especially critical if you have Windows XP (which I do). I used both the integrated Linksys wireless network card and the wireless PC card. I have a mix of Windows XP, 2000, and 98 in my home. When I initially installed the network, I did not have the latest drivers/firmware. These have patches to support Windows XP. The network would operate for a couple of minutes and then "hang". Once I upgraded the firmware on the router and the driver software, everything was fine. I also used the Linksys cable modem.

One other interesting thing I discovered. There is a configuration utility that goes with the wireless PC card. It illustrates that, the farther removed you are from the router, the weaker the signal strength. Eventually, it seems that the signal disappears altogether. However, this didn't actually mean that you lost your connection. I was in a diagonally opposite end of my house and was still able to browse the web even though the configuration utility showed 0 signal strength! It was slower, but I was still connected.

Very Easy Setup, March 18, 2002
By Sheldon (Aspen, CO United States)
The reason I like this product is ease of setup, and the fact that it has some wired ports. Some wireless routers have no place to plug in a CAT 5 cable, so even if your main computer is only a foot away, you will have to buy a wireless network card which adds to the cost of your system. My main desktop computer is plugged directly into the Linksys, and my notebook operates wireless. The manual is pretty good, and after making sure that your computers are set to DHCP (not hard to do) the Linksys will work as a rounter and gateway to the Internet by just plugging everything into the right holes. If you use Linksys wireless network cards and adaptors as well, the entire operation is pretty painless. Orinoco PCMCIA cards have a bit more range, but you have to jump through few more hoops to get things right.

Some tips: 1. Don't expect miracles when it comes to distance. A lot of factors come into play, including what your home/office is constructed off, and interference from other devices in your home/office. Try to get the unit up high for best coverage. 2. While the rounter does act as a firewall, if a hacker does get to it, and knows the default password (hardly anyone ever changes the default password) they could get through. So, change the password. 3. Change the SSID address. When used as a wireless router, this "should" keep your neighbors from using your router as a gateway to the Net, or getting into your computers when files are being shared. I took my notebook to my neighbor's home and was able to get into my files and surf the Net with no problems. 4. If you are sharing files and folder, use passwords. While I don't want to make anyone paranoid, these are simple changes that should help with security. 5. Linksys support is okay, and it is 24/7, but you have to get the right person. If things don't work out call back. You'll never get the same person twice.

If this is your first adventure into networking or wireless networking, Linksys makes the process pretty painless.

    Range [is bad}, March 18, 2002
By gtada (Pasadena, CA United States)
For some reason, I can't get more than ten feet away without the unit without getting a warning that my network connection's been lost. I've tried updating the firmware, power-cycling, etc. Nothing works. Maybe this is an exception rather than the rule, but their customer service [is bad] too. I tried everything they suggested, and nothing worked. I wanted an exchange, but I still have the old unit.

The Worst Tech Support Staff Ever, March 16, 2002
By unknown
You may want Linksys products, you may have the know-how to install them, and so good on you. But if you're just a regular ole home user like me, then God help you because their tech support won't. Average 30 minute hold time, only to talk to a snide, condescending support person who petulantly fired questions at me and then would let loose a stream of gobbledygook, misdiagnosing the problem and basically trying to get rid of me so they could go on their break. After three tries, I gave up. I wonder if Linksys management knows how bad their support staff is.

Works great, makes others jealous!!, March 14, 2002
By bekster (colorado)
Once I downgraded the firmware (came with 1.40.1 and download was 1.39.2) worked GREAT!! Good reception throughout my 1000 sq ft condo. Very cool to sit on my couch, laptop in hand with no cords/cables and be able to surf the net.

    ...Shoddy Product, March 14, 2002
By unknown
...It falls apart both physically and logically, and while the idea is wonderful, Linksys really screwed up trying to implement it. Linksys Tech Support is pitiful, and after them telling me over 15 times to upgrade to the newest firmware, which was buggy in the first place, I gave up and swore off linksys products forever.

If you want something like this, forget it. Go get yourself a decent Cisco ADSL router, many more features, and a separate 802.11b wireless gateway, or one of the new -a devices.

DONT BUY THIS, THE RED LIGHT WILL HAUNT YOU :(

Worth every penny, March 14, 2002
By Dan (Verona, NJ USA)
Just plugged it in and it worked - all I had to do was reset my modem (I'm a Comcast subscriber). I set it up in the basement of my 1500 sq ft house, and it worked throughout the house with no issues regarding connectivity. For the price, you can't beat it... I just wish I bought it sooner.

Easy install. Bumps in performance, March 13, 2002
By homenetworker (San Francisco,CA)
Bought Feb 2002.
Install was easy. Both the Wireless router and the adapter.

Documentation was good. Was able to do stuff easily, like encryption etc.

Customer support was good. (4 min hold time.)

where it did not perform seamlessly was in advanced uses, like disabling DHCP for port forwarding to a apache server.
On Re-Enabling DHCP, the router would puke on itself and I had to reset everytime meaning, changing password, changing my Network ID etc.

Had to download new firmware based on what the technician told me and install that. Works ok now.

Overall, Its as good or bad as the netgear router/adapter set.
Buy one which has greater mail in rebate or dicsount.
