What's the Deal with the Negative Reviews??, June 28, 2001
By miguelf (Miami, FL)
I read all reviews before purchasing this product. I decided to ignore them all, and just buy it. This device is excellent. For those of you who gave it bad ratings or found it to be too complicated, that's a USER issue and I assure you it has nothing to do with the device. The device functions EXACTLY the way it it says it does. heh It's is incredibly easy to setup. Anyone can set it up. If you plan on purchasing, I suggest you ignore or not worry about all the reviews indicating complicated setup. My recommendation is as soon as you get the product, upgrade to the latest firmware before configuring the router. The Wireless AP: I'm running it with a WinCE device that has a Cisco Aironet 340 PCMCIA card. (People stated this wouldn't work). heh So it really is interoperable with other 802.11b equipment. Works perfectly. Get excellent signal strength no matter where I am in the house. If you would like to achieve even better signal, there are tips if you do your research. The Routing: Extremely easy web based configuration/setup. The device also has very good advance features like port forwarding for those of you who would like to run other services like FTP, Mirc, etc. Excellent Device, excellent price!

overall, June 28, 2001
By Cyntha A. Garry (Waltham, Ma USA)
Well, installing this with Win 2000 was harder than I thought. I heard there was problems but figured if I downloaded the lastest driver it would work out. Wrong. The driver place a file in the wrong place and once moved it worked fine. If you buy this and are going to use it with the wireless pc card then you need to worry about this. If you are going to hardwire (why are you buying wireless) then you are ok. So I guess the problem is more with the wireless pc card then the hub.

Best of the Wireless Access Point/Router Combos, June 27, 2001
By Captures The Light (San Mateo, CA)
Linksys' BEFW11S4 is a great product. Set-up is a breeze, and the range seems significantly better than competing products from the likes of SMC and D-Link. It works with other 802.11b products (such as Lucent's Orinoco PCMCIA product (Warning: the Lynksis PCMCIA cards have a high failure rate). I use this product in a three story house and have good reception throughout as well as throughout my yard. I'd buy this product again.

Great product, awesome support., June 25, 2001
By book_man (Oakland, CA USA)
I am not close to being a technician -- I might be classified as a "power user". As we speak the two kids are connected wireless, both downloading, and my wife is surfing the net-- all on a single DSL line with no degredation in access (I used the new Linksys USB wireless NIC). I installed the router on a Sunday in 2-3 hours. Twice I punted and called Linksys tech support. On a Sunday, they answered on the first ring both times and nailed my problems (which were not trivial and related to some firewall issues on my machine and configuration requirements of my ISP). I wish this could be a little easier -- but Linksys keeps working on it. The software and enclosed CD instructions are great and www.linksys.com has a lot of FAQs. But at the end of the day, the guys on the phone will get you through the installation. If you want to share a DSL line with a mix of wired/wireless and are ready to take the plunge, I'd recommend this without hesitation.

Awesome networking product, but knowledge is assumed, June 20, 2001
By Simon Guest (Seattle, WA)
After having wireless networking at work, I was keen to duplicate a similar environment at home... After reading reviews of a number of products, I decided on the Linksys BEFW11S4. From reading the specs., the Linksys BEFW11S4 offered all I was after : A WAN Ethernet port to connect to the cable modem (albeit via a cross-over UTP cable that Linksys don't supply in the box :-(), 4x100Mb ports to connect to my desktop PCs and of course the inbuilt wireless capability. In addition, the unit can be setup as a DHCP server to allocate IP addresses for your machines, and also supports both PPTP and IPSEC (which is very handy as I can happily create a VPN into systems at work). Wireless support is IEE802.11b inc. WEP. For me, the setup was a breeze - the device is already allocated a static IP address out of the box (so there is no messing around with BOOTP or additional s/w) and all the configuration is through a relatively nice web interface. Within about 10 minutes I had both the networked and wireless machines working through my cable modem and was happily surfing from other rooms in the house. Wireless strength appears to be good, and I was getting around 70% signal strength on the floor above where the unit was installed (my laptop is running with the Cisco Aironet card - I can't vouch for the Linksys cards...) For anyone who has had IP networking experience, this unit is easy to use and great value (I was almost going to buy a separate switch, router and Wireless AP until I came across this product). For those without the years of networking knowledge, I'd still recommend getting the product, but would emphasize the need to read the documentation before diving in and getting frustrated... Either way, a great product.

Working great w/ 1 desktop and 2 laptops., June 16, 2001
By unknown
Installed with out any problems. Has been working great. VPN to corp from home works also. Their tech support depends on who you get. Good help from some. Bad answers from others. One person told me that I would have to work with my HQ to get VPN to work. Found enable pptp pass through on the set up page and it works great. Working email and internet form around the house and outside.

Linksys has the right idea but the product is half baked !, June 14, 2001
By J. Coleman (Holmdel, New Jersey USA)
First let me say that I have owned and used a LinkSys BEFSR41 for over a year now. This product has worked incredibly well and offered a great deal of flexibility with all of the options available through the web interface. Now along comes the wireless version of this product - the BEFW11S4. Now what should I do ? Should I buy the BEFW11s4 and get the functionality of my trusty BEFSR41 along with wireless or should I simply buy the Linksys WAP11 and plug it into my existing system? Well my fellow geeks, the answer is that I ended up doing both. Not by choice of course. With a huge grin on my face I opened up the BEFW11S4, read the quick install instructions and promptly placed my BEFSR41 to the side. With the same enthusiasm I opened and installed the WPC11 wireless network card again carefully reading the quick install instructions for Windows 2000. Just to make sure the Access Point was working after I configured everything, as was my old BEFSR41, I had my laptop plugged into the network. Things where going well at this point - I had access to the Internet. Now came the hard part. The first stumbling block was that I was getting an error 31 in device manager (Windows 2000) for the Instant Wireless Network Card (WPC11). Noting that the instructions where sorely lacking for troubleshooting info, I ventured to the linksys web site. Fortunately they have a knowledge base that anybody can reference. It turns out that a .sys file was copied into winnt\system32 instead of winnt\system32\devices. Moving the file correct this error 31 issue. Now the next step was to run the "Wireless Lan Configuration Utility." Clicked on the ICON and I got the message "Can't link to network driver. I looked in the knowledge base - nothing at all. Had to call Tec support. At first I got a busy signal and then after three attempts later, I was able to get through. The tech was helpful but a little annoying as he kept on putting me on hold. In any case it turns out that another .sys file was placed in the wrong place. Problem solved. During this same issue I bumped into another issue. Using the web configuration tool for the BEFW11S4 I wasn't able to change the wireless address number. The error message was something like "14-14 out of range." A firmware update later and a reconfigure, things seemed to be back to normal. At this point I just stuck with the default address of 06 and made sure the WPC11 was set to the same. Now after all of this, things still didn't work - it turns out that the WPC11 needs to be set to "Infrastructure" from the default setting of "Adhoc." All of a sudden things started to work. It was about one in the morning at this point and now I was roaming around the house, the yard, the garage with a wireless laptop. The range seemed to be great and Internet content was flowing to my screen. I did hit some areas in the house where the signal was less than optimal, but nonetheless things worked well until - I tried to VPN in the corporate network. This is after all why I bought this thing. This is where things went down hill; VPN does not work either hardwired or wireless with this product. I called tech support, they're completely aware of it and they provided me with one firmware update after another. It appeared that these firmware updates where buddy drops and that they where handed off to tech support so that the customers can do the testing. Well, needless to say, none of them worked. This is where I decided to throw in the towel. I really wanted this to work and entertained the idea of holding onto this thing until they got it right. After all, the wireless Internet access worked great. But the inability to VPN really got in the way. With that, I ended up returning this unit and buying the WAP11. Now I have the WAP11, the WPC11 wireless card and my trusty old BEFSR41 in service. Life is great and VPN works flawlessly.

Excellent Wireless AP and Router!!!!, June 14, 2001
By Patrick Graves (Murray, Utah United States)
I was worried about all the bad reviews I seen on this site about this product, But have had no problems. The installation was very simple and was complete in about 5 min. I did not use the book for the install just the quick installation sheet. I have used Linksys products in the past and I think they are a great bang for the buck. I did upgrade the firmware as I was setting up the router. Maybe this helped I don't know, I upgraded before I tried it. I use this router for 3 hard wired computers and 1 laptop wireless (WPC11) and it works great. I have had no problems with speed, file transfers are very quick even while I listen to the radio on the internet and other people surfing @ the same time. I have found no limit due to traffic across the router. Anyway, this is a great product and the support via the web site is great (for the update).

Good, but still has some way to go, June 11, 2001
By unknown
This item is not for the plug and play user. Even with 15 years networking experience it was somewhat difficult to get all the features working though most users will not need them. Utilizing static ip addresses can be a hassle if you do not know how to obtain DNS information from your local provider. Also i believe Linksys over states its range for the RF side an should give realistic ranges. I have lost contact in as short as 60 feet and again that depends on the structure of the facility just dont expect 300.

Very pleased with this unit...., June 9, 2001
By Danny K (Middletown, New Jersey)
I too previously owned the Linksys BEFSR41 4 port router. It was the best router. easy to setup and I especially liked the speed sharing of my Comcast cable modem and the built in firewall protection that linksys provides. For my video conferencing I could open the Linksys firewall (advanced setting then dmz setting) which would allow me to turn on or off the firewall. With my print server hooked in to the 4th RJ45 port all 2 desktops and 1 laptop worked perfectly for the entire family. Then I got the urge to go wireless. I purchased the Linksys wireless AP with 4 port router. WOW! The Linksys BEFW11S4 works exactly as the BEFSR41 router SUPER and then comes the fun part. I ordered the linksys PC card for my laptop and using the quick install directions I had it up and working in 10 minutes. The only change I had to make was: "Select wireless pc card, go to advanced tab and change network to infrastruction." That's it! Everything is preset on the router and the card. Wireless is great! I'm still testing it... I have the router setup in my basement, center of the house. I have a center hall colonial. All the rooms in the house work wirelessly to the router, even the upstairs bedrooms. the connection is as good as if it were wired. but as other reviewers have said I was a little disappointed in the distance. When I go out on my outside deck I loose the signal. Some viewers have said this thing works to the neighbors house. Hard to believe. I'm still testing this unit , Linksys makes it so the antennas can be disconnected and you can connect a coax on the connector and locate the antennas at a different location. Since my router is in a finished basement, I can't tell yet how it would work it it were above ground level. In closing, I do enjoy wireless and this unit is fine for me I'm very pleased with the speed and I'm sure if I install the router above ground level I'll be able to reach my outside deck for the summer.

works for simple users but not for advanced users!, June 9, 2001
By unknown
This device works great if all you're going to do is hook up a few computers to it (both hardwire and wireless) to access the internet. The transfer speed between computers is as expected. But when you want to use some of its advanced features, it has a lot of problems! The biggest problem I'm having is port forwarding. It really should be simple. For example, I forward port 80 tcp to my internal server running solaris 2.8. But when I try to access my website externally, it eithers thinks about it for a long time and then times out, or it downloads half the page and then stall. I called the Linksys tech support line, and they recommended that I enable IPSec pass through and pptp pass through. These should not make any difference at all! Do the tech support people know what they're talking about? Anyway, I tried it, and it made no difference. My server has been running for the past year with no problems with my previous router. I thought it would be nice to have a router with the wireless feature. But I'm going to hook up my old router and return this Linksys.

Could be better..., June 8, 2001
By unknown
I recently purchased this product and at first, everything appeared to work. The setup was a breeze. It took about 5 minutes to enter in all my info and the thing was online. I was able to surf the web, download files, etc. However, the next day, when I'm at work and I want to access my home network, it was a big pain. I tried to ssh into my home server but it would hang. I tried to access my webpage but it came up only 25% of the time (and of the times it came up, it was very slow). This was definitely not the way it was before I had this set up. I had an old 486 computer running IPRoute routing software. I have to admit...that program ran circles around this Linksys router. So I called Linksys tech support. The person I spoke with listened to what I had to say, but the only suggestion he gave me was for me to put my server on the dmz. That really defeats the point of having a firewall! I asked him if there was anything else I can do. He said that maybe the router I got was defective, and I should get it replaced. So I did. I just received the new one... I entered all my info in and got it online. But I'm disappointed that it behaves the same. So here's my conclusion: Good: easy setup, works great for connecting multiple computers to the internet. Bad: port forwarding just doesn't work correctly.

No problem...., May 30, 2001

I've had good luck with this product. Sure there's some serious gaps in the documentation, but once you figure it out (as any tech person will) it works well.

Works after you figure out setup (except VPN), May 28, 2001
By E. Musser
I bought the BEFW11S4 to replace my non-wireless LinkSys BEFSR41 which I liked a lot. Set up was fairly straight forward but you must remember to set your wireless clients to use the "Infrastructure" otherwise you'll get no connection to the access point. Tested with the Linksys WPC11 card on both a Compaq Presario 14XL (WinME/Win2000) notebook and a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop (Win2000). In my 1500 sq. ft. house the reception was good or excellent throughout. I was relieved to see the firewall/routing features were identical to that of the BEFSR41 with an additional feature of allowing you to change the WAN adaptor's MAC address (so I did not have to call up my cable modem service to register the new address). The only thing that does not work (even after getting latest firmware upgrade) is VPN. I would rate 4 stars if vpn worked. The on-line help files provided are very poor (some of the wireless card's online help say "Insert detailed description of this tab here."!!!!). One more thing. I have found that with both this product and the BEFSR41, if you are using port forwarding, the device will occasionally crash if you try to access the external port through the external address from within your home network. From internal machines, you must use the internal address of the machine (avoiding the router completely). From external machines using the external address works fine.

Partially functional while awaiting the patch, May 26, 2001
By W. Kang (Englewood Cliffs, NJ United States)
I am a cable modem user in a four bedroom house. The wired/wireless functions have been working fine except for the following items: Client/server multiplayer gaming does not function. Games life Half-life, Counterstrike, etc that use UDP packets will freeze the device requiring a poweroff or reset. I'm sure a patch will come out eventually but this is a showstopper for me. I can work around it by using the Linksys just as a hub and putting another router in front, but I wanted to get rid of the other devices. Range was a little disappointing. Long file transfers from the living room are iffy. Makes playing MPEG4 files onto the digital TV problematic. I have since gotten rid of the Linksys and bought a SMC 7004AWBR. The gaming works and I get slightly better range. Have not tried the VPN passthrough options for either device. Final recommendation. If you are set on a Linksys, wait until they patch it completely. If you can't wait, get an SMC. (note: there is an older SMC model. The newer one has the ports on the back and looks more stylish (rounded), but the lights are less useful/harder to see). If you could use the convenience of a print server, get the SMC. If you have an external modem, you can plug that into the SMC for your connectivity. And the SMC is usually cheaper.

Wish I could give it zero, May 26, 2001
By J. T. Winsor (San Francisco, CA United States)
Linksys should never have released this router! I bought it right off the bat, and it has never worked. First the wireless would shut off after a few minutes. I tried to contact linksys tech support 3 times, I received a callback once, long after I had gone home, with no direct number. I updated the firmware to beta version 1.3.7.5 this reduced the problems, but they were still large enough to make it unusable. It lacks the ability to route UDP packets reliably through the wireless, (No VPN or internet gaming), it stops routing wireless packets to the internet intermittently, requiring a reset. Again I tried to contact linksys tech support, this time via e-mail, again they were slow to respond, only after threatening to contact the attorney general did they respond to me (3 e-mail in 10 working days). The response told me nothing that I did not know, That the router wasn't ready for prime time, and it needs a new firmware. I wish I could get my money back for it, as it has been nothing more than a paper weight.

Works great for me with my @Home cable service !!, May 24, 2001
By bman888 (Redwood City, CA United States)
I placed my order *before* I read the reviews below. Boy was I worried I made the wrong decision. I almost cancelled my order in fact, but since the price was right and the merchandise was on it's way, I figured I would give it a single chance and if that didn't work, then I'd return it. Afterall, 80% of the reviews below bash the product, the "customer service" and the fact that it just doesn't work.I've had success with the Linksys BEFSR41 cable/dsl router so I figured I'd take the chance with this product. The BEFW11S4 would replace the BEFSR41 in my network, so it was just a matter of powering everything down and then plugging all wires back into my new WAP toy. So far so good. After starting everything back up, I accessed 192.168.1.1 and put in all my info --IP address, sub address, DNS servers, subdomain, gateway info, etc. saved it, and started cruising the net immediately. My Win2K machine was working, so I had to check my Macintosh's internet connectivity --fired that up, and that too was still working. Cool, at least the "wired" part still works. So I am using my work's Lucent/Orinoco Silver wireless card for the time being, plugged it into my VAIO laptop, made sure it knew I was using DHCP for network settings in Win2K, started my browser and *presto* all was working there too. But I figured I'd wait an hour --all the concerns in other reviews say it works for an hour, then dies. Well, so far (knock on wood), it's still working except for a problem I was having with tunneling into corp network. I mentioned this to my friend and he immediately mentioned that I probably forgot to enable PPTP (tunneling) in the "advanced" tab at the configure window. Well, after making the changes my friend suggest, just like that, I can now tunnel into the corp network without any problems (knock on wood).. I am still having problems getting tunneling to work on a PowerBook G3 running OS 9, but the card does see the WAP (I get signal). I'll spend the weekend fiddling with it some more.. Over all, this product does what it says on the box. I would give it 5 stars if the tunneling would work for my Macintosh PowerBook. If you are listening Linksys, please get this working ok?!? I'll be waiting for your firmware upgrade.. :)

Great Router/Switch and WAP, May 23, 2001
By S. Aurangajeb (Sunnyside,NY United States)
Before I bought this product, I read the customer reviews..There are definitely a lot of bad feedback on this product. I decided to purchase it because I heard a lot of great things about Linksys products and because it was one of the very few cheap items out there that offered a router, switch and wireless access point all in one. I was however very skeptical because of all the bad feedback. Well after I received this product I followed all the directions. I connected my desktop to the ethernet ports on the back and I also connected my laptop using the Linksys 802.11b pcmcia card. Well everything worked great, I was routing through my ISP using both my desktop connected by wire and my laptop connected wirelessly. I was very pleased however I refrained from putting feedback here because I wanted to make sure that this thing worked for some time.Well its been 1 month now and the thing still works great. I stressed this thing with as much traffic as I could, I connected two computers wired directly to the ethernet ports on the back and they transferred data between eachother at an amazing 90Mbps, WOW! At the same time I had my laptop downloading data wirelessly from one of the wired computers, I'm only able to download at a rate of 6Mbps through the wireless card on the laptop but it maintained this data rate across the street from my house into a friends house, and the AP was indoors, again WOW! During this process, the box never froze or locked up. In conclusion, through the switch ports I was able to transfer data at 90 Mbps and wirelessly at 6Mbps. This is a great product and I would highly recommend it. I believe that all the customer complaints prior to this had to be due to a bad batch of these boxes. I love mine, and they already dropped the price from the time that I bought it a month ago. This thing is so good that my next door neighbor is going to buy one because of what he saw with mine. There is one flaw, or one feature that I haven't been able to get working and that is the port forwarding feature. I wanted to be able to FTP from my work computer to my home computer so I set up the router to forward the FTP port. I was able to ftp to my home computer however the session ended abruptly and I was no longer able to FTP back. I waited a while and the same thing happened again. My conclusion is that the router is not able maintain a port forwarding state. If I try to transfer data, it forwards great but then it abruptly stops. Thats my only negative comment. But other than this the product works great. Highly recommended.

THIS DEVICE IS GREAT!!! DO NOT LISTEN TO OTHER REVIEWS!!!, May 21, 2001
By Benjamin Lapaz (Riverside, CA United States)
I recently installed this device with my network and it's been working great. One of the reviews said that the ORINOCO wireless pc card does not work, but I'm using one right now and it works perfectly fine with great range. I'm not an expert on networking but I have a working network with 2 desktops and 1 laptop with a Lucent wireless card. And the Linksys tech support was also great. I was having a little trouble and I called them up, didn't have to wait long and they answered my question right away. I don't understand how someone can have major problems with this device. It was real easy to set up. I'm not really sure what else I can say about this device. If you are thinking about getting a wireless access point, this is the way to go. You get a cable/dsl router and a wireless access point at the same time, which is also cheaper than other comparable wireless access points.

Very flaky, not worth the aggravation, May 18, 2001
By RR Maverick (Austin, Tx USA)
This is a major piece of junk. I am in the process of trying to return mine. It crashes very often and typically ends up with a new ip address. One guaranteed way to crash it is to turn on port forwarding, for something simple, like ftp. Did these people even test this thing? The range leaves something to be desired. Upstairs/downstairs? You can forget it. About the only good thing is that when I first set it up, they were very helpful (the DHCP stuff didn't work as advertised)....
