linksys vs COX, February 25, 2006
By justme (AZ)
With all-one , it's hard to determine the problem. When it is up and running it work just fine, very hard to troubleshoot when it's not working

Linksys WCG200, February 20, 2006
By J. Garland (Washington, DC)
This is the complete wireless home networking device. It took about 15 minutes to set up and has worked perfectly ever since. I highly recommend it.

Doesn't Work, February 12, 2006
By Scott
Wireless access does not work. Now I have to return the whole thing for refund and replace the router and modem. I would advise against an all in one solution.

Good product but a bit pricey, January 30, 2006
By DJM (Boston, MA USA)
This product is convenient and so far has worked well. It was expensive though and the risk is that if either the modem or router fail then the entire unit is junk. The alternative is to buy a separate modem and router which is actually less expensive. Still, I was willing to pay a premium for the convenience and don't regret my decision.

WCG200 v2 is even better, January 26, 2006
By greg15910 (Chino Hills, CA United States)
I stayed away from the WCG200 because it didn't have WPA. Well, Linksys has fixed that in v2. Now has WEP, Radius, WPA Personal, WPA Enterprise, WPA2 Personal, WPA2 Enterprise security modes. Just make sure you buy it in person so you can verify you are getting v2. I bought mine at Compusa and they had both v1 and v2. As of now, v1 cannot be updated to v2.

Love the Wireless G Gateway!, September 12, 2005
By SCS Pres-Fac Mgmt Svcs (CA)
Original review: September 11, 2005 It was a breeze to set up and works very well. Very nice to have the modem and router in one unit. As other reviewers have mentioned, the only issues I had were with Comcast. Be vigilent and assertive with them, otherwise you could be in limbo for hours. All you need them to do is activate the modem in their system, which I understand takes them just a few moments. The issues that result in delays seem to be centered around lack of knowledgable representatives and poor procedure identification.
Update: July 19, 2006 I've installed three more of these Wireless G Gateways and the installations were a breeze. Comcast agents are well aware of the process now so the activation only takes a few minutes. I can't speak highly enough about Linksys or this product.

Easy Set up - Easy interface - Works great!, September 7, 2005
By C. Haley (Florida)
I was having issues with dropped signals on my internet connection using Adelphia cable. Wasn't sure if it was the cable modem (motorola surfboard) or my wireless router (D-Link 615+), but it just wouldn't hold a constant connection for my VPN client software. Instead of replacing each piece to see what was the culprit, I replaced them all with this one unit. It was a very easy install, and configuration, although different from what I was accustomed to with the D-Link. After less than 2 minutes on the phone with Adelphia Customer service registering the MAC address with them, the unit is up and running. Since I purchased and installed this, my latency has dropped, and I have not had one single interruption in service allowing me to keep a constant VPN connection during the workday.

Works great, August 31, 2005
By Alan (Canton, MI)
I bought this to replace my rented Comcast cable modem and current wireless router. Easy setup and it works great, although I don't use many of the advanced features. Unlike another reviewer, I had no problems connecting to my company's VPN. First one I received was defective, so that's why it's not 5 stars.

Works as a modem, but that's it, August 21, 2005
By Joshua L. Pilkington
This is a good product for those who only want to access the internet. However, those wanting to run a server will have to look elsewhere. No matter what you do, DMZ and Port Forwarding will NOT work, even after disabling all the firewall and services on the router and computer. You can't upgrade the firmware either. Now all I have is a real expensive brick after having to buy yet another router and modem.

Great device, August 21, 2005
By Computer Guy (Phoenix, AZ USA)
This is a great device for removing desk clutter. The consolidation of router, cable modem, switch and wireless-G was wonderful. I haven't worked much with the wireless portion in the way of testing range and throughput.

Although the router is fast, it has bugs..., August 20, 2005
By P. Cho
I've had this router for about 6 weeks and I loved it. It's really fast. With comcast, I get around 4mbps. The setup was decent, had a few problems here and there but got it running that same day I got it. Even though I was happy then, now I hate it a lot.
1) This gateway only works with cable internet and cannot be used as just a router. 2) It does not have a firmware upgrade option. 3) This router has a VPN bug. You cannot connect to a VPN with this gateway, eventhough it has options that make it seem like it would be able to work. 4) Tech support is retarded. I asked them to help me with the VPN problem and I talked to 3 different people, and they told me certain things to do, and I told them it probably wouldn't work (ie restarting the router, port forwarding) but they said it would definitely work...yet I find out it doesn't work. Spent several hours doing this, and nothing came of it.
Just as long as you're not going to use this to connect to a VPN or think about upgrading the firmware, then this is a good gateway.

Wireless cable modem and router, August 15, 2005
By landersonz (Paso Robles, CA USA)
This is an excellent piece of equipment. One of the few I found that offers a cable modem AND wireless router, it works great. It was also easy to set up, although the manual was pretty inadequate. It had instructions for setting up a wired connection, but mentioned nothing about setting up a wireless connection.

Works really well, August 14, 2005
By mantle52ball (NorCal)
This was my first Wireless Router that I ever purchased/used. Besides some minor problems getting it up an running. It was mostly my fault from not knowing how to install it. This router works great!!!. I've had it hooked up for over a month an no problems what so ever. I hooked it up to Comscast Cable and together they work like charm. Very fast an reliable. Just something to remember when hooking it up for the first time. You don't need the modem that Comcast privides "It has a built in modem already", so you can skip that part of the setup. Just plug the cable into the back of the Gateway. It's a little pricey but it's a top notch product!!

AWESOME COMBO, July 23, 2005
By Blue-water Hunter from HI (Sea-town)
Having a cable modem and wireless router in the same unit is great. Now my surge suppressor is not filled with power bricks and wasted outlets. The power brick that comes with this unit has a cord extending from it so you have space to plug in other things into the power strip. As far as connectivity, I didn't have any major problems. It took about 30 minutes to hook up to Comcast, although it was not due anything on my side. In the previous reviews, they recommended to disable the firewall and NAT routing. I didn't have to do neither. At first I wasn't able to get a WAN IP, so the Comcast rep was giving me all sorts of instructions and suggestions. When I told them I have to disable my firewall and NAT routing, they said OK and to restart my pc. Lo and behold, the internet came up quicker than ever. All this, and I didn't really disable the firewall or NAT routing, I just told them I did. They gave me all this mumbo jumbo so that they make you think they are gods once the internet came up. However, it all boils down to them actually registering your modem......that's all. Be persistent and make sure they register your modem but be nice, or else. Other than that, they try to make you frustrated for the first couple of minutes. I am very satisfied with this gateway. Also, the Notebook adapter (WPC54G) was installed and running in less than 5 minutes. My wireless network is fast.

Doesn't work with Adelphia, June 7, 2005
By D. Ziemba (Colorado Springs, CO)
Adelphia in Colorado uses some different non-standard encoding/whatever, and this cable modem will not work with their service...Seems like a great piece of hardware other than that. It was tough to get all set up for wireless, and the local network. It just didn't work where a motorola surfboard sb5100 works fine now.

A great unit, even without any Macintosh support from Linksys -and Adelphia OK, May 26, 2005
By Robert C. Brown (Finger Lakes area, NY USA)
This is the unit I am recommending to all my friends.
It just works. Just like Apple computers, which Linksys does not support. However I needed no support to get my Powerbook working wirelessly with this unit, and my Winow boxes working wired (no wireless). So if you are thinking of using this with a Mac, and are worried about support, don't worry. It will work.
I am using it with Adelphia in updatate NY - no problems, once I gave them the MAC number from the sticker on the unit. (On the other hand, Adelphia is a bunch of know-nothing bozos)
--- Update ---
Since then, I have used my Airport Express (see my review Oct 7, 2004) to extend the range. The two together work great!

instalation and setup was hell but it was worth it., April 28, 2005
By LIZ (LosAngeles)
I recently purchased this cable gate way, it was all i was looking for ,acesspoint router cable modem all in one, the setup was easy ill recomend dont use the usb, us your network cable its much faster, to network and internet.gettin my network conected and my cable comcast internet concected took me 5 days non stop, the manual dont help you with nothing, the people in lynksys support dont know nothing, these people in comcast didn't know what the hell was going on, my modem was not being detected, i was all out of options but i didn't gived up, BASICALLY I WAS ON MY OWN, finally i called comcast and for the first time i came across to someone who was smart and knew what he was talking about but still he couldn;t help me, i gave them my serial number and mac adress but there was a problem with the cable gate way the built in firewall was stoping comcast from giving me my unique ip adress. well on the 5th day i was ready to return this product and cancel my cable internet when i went to the product setting page http://192.168.01 make sure you turn of your fire wall, and select disable "NAT AND ROUTING, FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW NAT IS LIKE A FIRE WALL TO SO IF YOU DISABLE YOUR FIRE WALL THE NAT IS STILL ON SO YOU NEED TO DISABLE IT. AND WHEN I DID THAT MY MODEM WAS DETECTED I CALLED UP SOME GUY FROM COMCAST AND IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES I WAS UP AND RUNNIN ON THE HIGH SPEED CABLE INTER NET. AFTER YOUR CONECTED TO THE INTERNET IT WILL HELP IF YOU ENABLE NAT AND ROUTING SO OTHER COMPUTERS IN YOUR NETWORK CAN ACESS THE INTERNET TOO. IM TELLING YOU I GOT THIS LAPTOP IN MY HOME NETWORK AND ITS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HOUSE, EVEN THOUGH THE SIGNAL STRENGHTH IS LOW THE INTERNET IS STILL SUPER FAST ILL RECOMEND GETTING A RANGE EXPANDER.

Works perfect w/ Cox cable, March 4, 2005
By Craig (San Diego, CA)
I purchased this to replace a failing cable modem, and I'm very impressed. Had it up and running within 10 minutes of opening the box. Wireless works great, no problem. It doesn't support WPA, so if you're going to do anything interesting with the wireless (i.e. banking or shopping) you should use the 128bit WEP, turn off the SSID broadcast, use MAC address restriction, and change the key every couple of weeks. It's still vulnerable, but most attackers will go after a softer target. Overall a great device.

Wireless G with uncomporable networking features, January 28, 2005
By Wireless Fiend (RI, USA)
I basically bought linksys because I had and existing cable/dsl router and was very happy with the features it had. This new wireless cable modem/router/switch is much much more and worth every cent i spent on it. It had features that wasn't available in highend modems/routers. I realize that owning a linksys router, we take ip forwarding and the likes too trivial. Alot of the features that comes with this unit weren't available in the units i was comparing. In fact, after doing indepth research on each of the units, which I wanted to buy, the linksys WCG200 starts to shine compared to the others. It was a hands down decision for me. I'm very happy with it and will gladly recommend this unit for anyone who is looking to get a new cablemodem.
By the way, I have COX cable internet and it was easy as telling them the serial number and mac address to get my modem/router into their network. If other ISP are telling you it's incompatible, they are just giving you BS lip service. Oh, i'm writing this review on my wireless connection and it ROCKS. I even play games on it without noticing any network latency issues.

Works wonders.., December 27, 2004
By dodo39
Well I had comcast cable highspeed service here in michigan and a Toshiba PCX1100U cable modem and a vonage voip linksys router (model RPT31P2) well since my telephone service was intermitant and always cutting out I read all over the internet and found out it was either the vonage router or the cable service or the cable modem ...well since the oldest component was the cable modem(even though comcast said it pinged ok) I purchased the WCG200 and first thing was to hook it up to my four computers(don't ask)...one by usb cable and three by ethernet ports on the back of the unit..then I connected the last free ethernet port to the vonage RPT31P2 voip router..(total of five ports) after that I powered it on and went to the units web browser configuration page and disabled the firewall(just to make sure it did not interfer with the vonage phone line service..) then I called comcast and told them (using my cell phone since I no longer had a working phone) to delete my old mac address and gave them my new one from the WCG200 and its serial number and made them aware it was a gateway and router and cable modem... (be sure you don't select the wrong mac address as it also has a router mac address on this unit)..well within 5 miutes my modem was up and running and then my vonage services was working with no cutouts.. the only problem with this unit is that if you ever wanted to use it with a newer cable modem you could not since it does not have a wan port on it...(its all internal)..but hey... every thing is super fast and I have five pc's hooked up and now a wireless notebook setup and a wireless pda hooked up ...(don't ask :) and IT ALL WORKS!! PS by the way if you use wireless phones you may find some background noise from this unit as it also uses 2.4 ghz operating Freq!
