Blows BIG TIME, June 16, 2008

This thing blows big-time. I manage, design, and install networks for a living. I installed this in my house to compliment my new Dell laptop with wireless-N and I can say that my dvd rewinder was a better investment. PoE is pretty cool, which is why I bought it, but it's the only feature that works reliably. Drops connections pretty frequently only to reconnect a few minutes later. Range is good, but even at 10 feet, I reliably get 5% of my internet connection bandwidth. If you're really good at setting these things up (which, again, I do for a living), the setup is pretty easy. Using it, however, isn't such a pleasure.
Absolutely horrified--I got better performance from 10 year old 802.11FH, which you can pick up for about $10 on ebay.
Sucks balls... big time.

I bought this about 4 weeks ago and haven't had a problem yet. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about, except sound like they don't understand the difference between an Access Point and a Router. I am using this with a 8-Port Desktop Switch & a Wireless Router. I bought this on my previous experience with Linksys, the strength of reviews from PC World & others, and a couple of friends that work with Wireless Networks on a daily basis.

Installation, setup, operational were all exceptional. For 15 days. Then the transmitter quit and my customer service nightmare began. They teased me with a free 800 number that was disconnected. I tried the free chat, and was told that they didn't support this product thru the chat. So, I tried the 900 number referred in the 800 number for $9 a pop. After accepting the charge, the number went to directory assistance. I resigned myself to return the product (again, a 900 toll number) and was finally directed to customer service, after bouncing around a few people I was told to download the new firmware. I downloaded same, and the WAP started working! I submit that Linksys would do their customers a service if they were honest about downloading the latest firmware, and not so inclined to milk them for $.

Have had my WAP440N since Linksys made it avaiable. Easy install and no fuss (included quick setup easy to follow). Never had a single problem with it. Works like a champ!

I purchased this WAP about two months ago and it has performed flawlessly. It was easy to setup and configure; I'm not sure what the problem is with the other reviewers. In fact, I almost didn't buy this product because of the amount of negative reviews. I have always experienced great performance with Linksys products, so I thought I'd give this one a try too. If you have basic knowledge of wireless networks and can follow simple instructions, this product is for you. If not, you'll probably have to hire a technician for any product you purchase. Don't disparage a fine product. Purchase with confidence.

I read the prior reviews but went ahead and bought this on the advise of a friend who intalls wireless networks for a living and he uses this access point a lot. I am completly pleased with this Linksys product. When you plan to use it for what it is designed for, an Access point, and don't have any notions that it is anything more, it chugs right along. I ran CAT 6 cable, (keeping under 300 meters total length) and used the AC adaptor supplied to power the unit. It is ran off a Linksys wireless-N router and a 5 station Linksys Workgroup hub. I mounted it in the downstairs coat closet behind my TV room and turned on my laptop, found it, and connected. I then entered it's webbased setup utility and configured it to my liking, (WPA2 security to match my wireless router) and I works like a charm. I am writing this review on my laptop, in my bedroom, where my upstairs router alone could never reach. I now have full bar service all over my complete property, inside and out. It is just what was needed.

Just Doesn't Work!, February 18, 2008

I bought two of these based on my good experience with the WAP54G access points. What a nightmare! These routers drop wireless packets like crazy and as a result you get disconnected from the network but you don't know it, since the computer still thinks it is connected to the AP. But you start getting "waiting for server xxx to respond" hangs in the browser. The weird thing is, you can download a single file at 30 MBPS over a cable modem with no problems, but try to surf a website and the thing hangs. I am using the newest firmware 1.2.14 released 2/5/08. This device fails both in N and G mode, in the same way. Clearly it has major firmware issues. Linksys support is worthless with no mention of this problem, even though it is all over the web and they MUST know about it. I have been buying Linksys for 10+ years but ever since Cisco bought them they have forgotten about the customer (just like Cisco). Too bad. Unfortunately I threw out the boxes so now I am stuck with two of these dogs! I won't even sell them to anyone else, that's how bad they are.

One star is too high a grade.
I made the grave mistake of buying this router some weeks ago. With difficulty (lousy documentation, etc.) I was able to make it work--most of the time--until last night. It died a slow and painful (for my wife and me) death last night and--because one of us often works from home with an internet connection to an office network--has caused major inconvenience.
Since this somewhat mirrors my experience with a prior Linksys router, the word "Linksys" is now a four letter word in my house, and always will be. So, I'll simply say L***sys, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

No stronger signal than wireless-G, don't waste your money, November 1, 2007

As of this writing, all reviewers have given it one star. I give it one star as well even though I was able to connect two workstations, each with a Linksys WMP300N wireless-N pci card w/ antenna, to it. Here's why I only give it one star - the signal strength is exactly the same as the wireless-G router (also Linksys) that it was supposed to replace. I even upgraded the firmware to the latest version (1.2.12 at this writing).
Where's the 4X range claimed? I don't know... I paid extra $$$ for this N protocol unit, plus extra $$$ for the N network adapters - no better performace - I'm seriously disappointed!
Here's the claim (copy/pasted): "MIMO technology uses multiple radios to create a robust signal that travels farther and reduces dead spots" - no, this is not true. This is probably true if the signal travels freely through the air with no walls or floors to stop it - not very practical for real-world application.
Bottom line: if you want extended range then avoid this product as if it were a drug-resistant bacteria - seriously!

Nightmare - avoid at all costs, October 20, 2007

After a day of comprehensive testing both in various modes (G-only, B/G/N mixed) and with different security configurations (no encryption, WPA2-Personal/AES) the unit was spectacularly unreliable both with Intel and Linksys NICs. I upgraded the firmware to the most current release before testing began. Absolutely ridiculous, given that my WAP54G access point has been extremely reliable.
After a string of recent disappointments with driver quality and availability, this is the last straw for me. I've been buying a lot of Linksys hardware over the past few years, but now I've had enough. I'm taking a look at Intel, Netgear and D-Link hardware in future for all purchasing requirements, and am not going to bother taking a look at Linksys again, life's too short. That's it.
Linksys senior management feel free to phone me personally (look me up in google) to tell me why I should ever evaluate their products again. But I suspect the company simply doesn't care.

Big, Big Problems, September 9, 2007

If you buy this item, be prepared to spend hours trying to get it installed and setup. The strange thing is that if you connect it to a router, it will connect quickly and get you online BUT if you want to setup your wireless network with security (an important thing) and to do any other configurations, you will have to connect to the unit using a special IP number. The truth is that in most cases, it will be very, very, very difficult to make that connection. Linksys doesn't mention anything about this. The solution requires you to manually reset your IP number and to connect directly with a CAT5 cable and then you have to set your computer back to normal -- but Linksys doesn't bother to tell you this. It took me several hours of searching the web for hints and trying many different things.
I would be very cautious about buying any Linksys product. The company is clearly not interested in providing users with the most basic information required. It would cost them nothing to provide this information -- or to revise the item so it doesn't need such absurdly difficult measures. I'm not buying Linksys again.

I bought one of these and connected it to a WRT350N on the other side of the house via ethernet cable. I did this because the "4X range" (cough, cough) of the 350N turned out to be more like 1.1X range.
I set it up and it worked immediately. Apparently, the idea of using this as an access point in addition to a wireless router is not something that ever occured to Linksys or, at least to the writer of the manual. So, everything was trial and error. The only info given was to make sure it has the same SSID as the rest of the system. Channels? Settings? Figure it out yourself.
My complaint with this access point is that it frequently drops connection to the rest of the network. The wireless connection to the computer stays up, so you don't actually know when this is happening until you stop getting pages to load in the browser or responses from the server. THe only thing to do is a hard reboot. There is a software reboot, but the AP, unlike the 350N rounter, will NOT allow you to access the firmware from a computer connected to it. You have to go somewhere else to get a signal from the router instead, or a computer hard wired to the network to pull up the AP firmware and order a reboot. Easier just to go and yank the power plug, since I am getting up anyway.
There is a setting that claims to improve "interoperability" with the linksys N card (which I use) enabling it did not fix the problem.
Calling linksys was worse than useless when you factor in the cost of the call. The people answering the phone know nothing at all and are just using the same data base of technical "help" you can get to yourself on their website. It has nothing about this problem, so they can't help. I have been told several times that a level II tech would call me ("within the hour", "sometime today", "as soon as possible") but, to date, that has not happened.
Clearly this product was released too soon.

Needs improvement, February 6, 2007

As of firmware version 1.2.8, this thing can't keep a network connection up very long. When moving large amounts of data, the WAP4400N tends to reboot. It has a nice form factor and was easy to install, but since I actually need a wireless network, I'm sending this back.
