Too Hot to Handle, February 9, 2003
By Pauly C. (New York, NY USA)
I am using the Linksys WPC11 Wireless PC Card in a Toshiba PentII 400 laptop. My laptop will lockup when using this card. I believe it is due to overheating w/ the card. When I remove the card, I can access Windows again, but my connection is lost and I need to reboot. The laptop has never hung using any other applications or devices. The card gets extremely hot. I do not know if this is due to the card overheating itself, or my laptop heating up the card. I intend to try this in a newer laptop soon. As for the performance of the wireless card, it works pretty well. I get a signal in every room of my apartment (its not that big though), and even with a 20% signal, I get good speed to the internet still. The drivers were easy to install and configure on my Windows2000. I have heard that some other cards have a much better antenna than this one, but this one seems to do the trick for me.

No problem...works great, February 5, 2003
By Doug (PA)
I bought the card and the BEFW11S4 Router at the same, had them installed and running in less than 20 minutes. Did not have to make any configuration changes. To put it to the real test I started up the VPN software that I use to connect to my work office and the connection was established with no problems.

Stay far away if using with a Toshiba, February 4, 2003
By tmcd877 (Danielsville, Georgia USA)
Purchased to use with a Toshiba Satellite S173. Computer locked up anywhere from immediately to around an hour when using the Linksys WPC11. After doing a little research (which I should have done in the first place) it turns out that there is a history of trouble with this card and Toshiba laptops. I like my Linksys wireless router, but the network card continued to cause problems and has since been returned. My advice is to stay away from this card if you have a Toshiba laptop.

did not work, returned it, February 4, 2003
By eric16763 (New Jersey)
Although it installed flawlessly and worked fine with the Linksys base, it made my laptop (Toshiba Tecra 8100, WinXP) freeze at random intervals (at one point, every 15 min or so).

Great once setup, but linksys service [is not good], February 3, 2003
By WirelessUser (Burr Ridge, IL)
The reason why I gave this card 4 stars, not 5, is because of Linksys' service. I called them few times during weekday and weekends for some setup help, got through the busy tones after redialing their number 20 times, and then I was on hold for about 45 minutes to an hour before anybody came on the phone. That was their shortest hold time.....other times I just hung up. I almost had returned their card and router at one point in time....once this card is properly setup with your wireless network, it works great....i have a 4400 sq ft house with a basement and back yard, and my laptop works great anywhere, including the basement and the back yard....just wish they make their technical support qaulity better and hire more people.

Great Card for Linux !!, January 30, 2003
By jhr0771 (Chicago, IL)
I have linux Red Hat 8.0. I installed the card using the instructions ...to install the card without wlan-ng drivers. It took me only a few minutes to start the card and connect to a linksys BEFW11S4 at a friend's house. The only problem I found was if I used ftp for a while I would loose the network connection. I switched to the wlan-ng drivers and everything worked fine !. After that I got my own BEFW11S4 and it has been working great for the last 3 months.

bit the bullet and purchased the router and card. after the initial headache of the set up, everything works great. with 2 computers in our house, this frees my wife and i up to be in separate rooms and concentrate on our own work. no unforeseen problems as of yet (knock on wood).

impossibly convoluted. unbelievably frustrating., January 27, 2003
By Graham Charles (San Francisco, CA USA)
Can I just put in my vote for the single worst product of the year? Sheesh --- I have a linksys wireless router and a linksys wireless card. And I'm a computer professional. This should be out-of-the-box easy to set up --- maybe ask for a "password" on one side and a "password" on the other. But NO! I have to know about WEP encryption (encrypt-it-yourself! it's more fun that way!) and subnet design and even then it doesn't work! Worst of all, the software gives no information about *why* it doesn't work --- there's no log, no error messages. Just a big nothing. Even after I got it working (beats me how, I just poked and prodded forever), the "configuration utility" that sits in my task bar does nothing at all useful. If I go to an airport or to another spot with Wi-Fi access, I have to go into the card's Configuration properties, re-set a bunch of stuff (with no opportunity to save my existing settings!), and hope that it'll work. All in all, a very frustrating product. Good luck.

Great and easy, January 27, 2003
By perry245 (Maryland USA)
Great product, easy to set up - I am you may say dummy if comes to the computer set up stuff. I got Intel wireless at first and let me tell you after about 4 days of trying to get this set up I took it back and got the Linksys wireless AP Router and the wireless PC card. I got it set up and it is working great ever since, it took me about 1 hour to set it up. Great product and easy to set up even for computer Dummies like me...enjoy it !

Toshiba + XP + Linksys card = $%^#%^$, January 20, 2003
By rudi coursen (Columbus, OH United States)
I have a toshiba laptop with Xp and I am on my third card this week? Yes, when I got my toshiba, it was perfect, flawless. It remained so until I went with the linksys wireless setup (b series wireless cable router 2.4). The linksys card works good for the first ten minutes. In the next 10 - 50 minutes, the system will lockup, and I have to take my battery out to reboot. All three have broken within the first two hours of operation. The laptop gets really hot and the card is even hotter. I have adjusted all settings to minimums, but this card just loves to overheat. I know of two other people that have had similar problems and went with the d-link 2.4 ghz. ...

A decent wireless card, January 17, 2003
By Steven H. (New York, NY USA)
The setup was incredibly easy and it was operating in minutes. Signal strength has been great so far operating in public wireless hotspots.

Try, try, try again, January 16, 2003
By Luke P. Cain (Mount Plymouth, Florida United States)
It took me three Wireless PC Cards before I finally found one that worked. The worst part was that neither I nor Linksys tech support realized that the first card didn't work at all until after several months of trying to install it. I worked with several very nice tech support people who helped me uninstall and reinstall the card multiple times, suggested I download fresh drivers (for Windows XP), and finally gave up and advised me to return the card to the place of purchase.I exchanged card 1 for card 2, and on installation it tried to update the card ROM. Unfortunately, it also hung my computer in the middle of the process. Friendly tech support advised that this was an unrecoverable error, and advised me to return the card to the place of purchase. I exchanged card 2 for card 3 which installed in a heartbeat. The only problem I had was that the signal strength was low at the location of my computer. It is excellent three feet to the left, but unfortunately, that's not where my desk is located. I purchased the USB version of the adapter, and the signal strength is excellent in the same location (I suppose because it has an external antenna). But it dangles rather than fitting securely into the PC card slot, so it has its drawbacks too. I've ordered a signal booster to see if that will help with the signal strength issue. Bottom line is that I'm reasonably happy with the results, but it sure took a long time to get there.

great product for the price, January 15, 2003
By Marc Swanson (Hartford, CT USA)
I own a few different types of wireless cards and the linksys in my opinion is a really good product for the money. Yes, you can buy 802.11b cards with longer range.. for example the Lucent Orinoco silver card I have gets about 10-20 feet further than my linksys but it also costs more . When my friends are setting up wireless networks I always reccomend this card.

Works wonderfully, January 14, 2003
By kraftwerk (Holland, MI USA)
I bought this card at the same time as my new laptop, a Gateway P4. Installation with XP Pro was a snap, it immediately recognized my wireless network (I'm using a Linksys wireless router/hub in my basement connected to a cable modem.) Signal quality in the rooms where it will be used is excellent, and I haven't had a single problem. The indicator lights could be brighter... on a bright day it's hard to see if you're connected or not... but other than that, it's excellent!

Five star start, one star finish, January 10, 2003
By unknown
I installed a v.3 card in my Sony Vaio about 9 months ago. The installation and operation on XP home was flawless and if I reviewed the product then, I would have given it a 5 star review. However, the signal pick-up on the card has been diminishing over time - areas that had started out with a strong signal, now register as low. Finally the card stopped working completely. Right now the card only picks up a signal if it is placed right next to the WAP11 and then dies within 10 minutes. This would get one star right now if it weren't for the Linksys techie that tried to talk me through the problem, then suggested a replacement card.

Fast & easy to setup., January 7, 2003
By jswizard (Fountain Hills, AZ USA)
Nearly a true plug-and-play device. Within a couple hours, I had this PC Card (and the Linksys Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router) running -- and was finally able to have true freedom with my Laptop. For internet access, no noticable degradation in speed is discernable when compared to a hard-wired connection to the cable modem. Intranet communication speed is limited, though.

Won't work well with XP, good with 2000, January 6, 2003
By unknown
This card hardly works at all with my Sony Vaio laptop running windows xp, but it does work well with my compaq evo running windows 2000. I don't know if it is the operating system, with all the bad reviews about this card not working well... I think I will have to suck it up and buy a Orinoco or a Netgear card for my Sony.

Excellent Choice, January 4, 2003

I just got this along with the wireless router and it was so easy to set up. I literally just installed the software and rebooted with the card in and everything was ready to go!
