Lousy WiFi reception, August 19, 2008
By ziggy29 (Hill Country, TX)
(This is for the Version 2 adapter. I don't know if subsequent revisions may be improved).

We have several wireless computing devices on our 802.11b/g home network. Of all these devices, this card has (by far) the most reception problems no matter where you place it. I have a Dell laptop for my work and I can put two other cards in it and almost never lose connection. With this card, I seem to drop out every few minutes (which is a shame because my other cards are still only 802.11b and this one supports WPA instead of the weaker WEP). As a result of the drop outs it's all but useless for connecting to my office VPN when I'm working at home, given the hassle of reconnecting to it. A relatively ancient Belkin card I have, on the other hand, locks on to any decent wireless signal. Unfortunately the old Belkin only supports WEP and is only 11 Mbps, but it shows that the drop outs on this Linksys card aren't a result of weak signals.

Maybe subsequent revisions of this card got it right, but when I can't pull in more than about 30% signal strength with consistency and lose connection every few minutes, it's not really anything I can recommend in the revision I own.

Like brand new, received it in the original box, software included. It works like a charm. The price was unbelievably reasonable. WOW.

After installing my new modem and router, I inserted this card into my laptop. It installed much quicker than expected, which was a pleasant surprise, and it works great. I've never had wireless access before, so I was surprised to see that it picked up several wireless networks around my neighborhood!

I don't know why I waited so long to get a wireless card for my notebook. This item works great. I have had no problems. My signal is strong out on the patio, and even upstairs. Makes my old IBM Thinkpad like new!!!! Love it!

I use this for my old Toshiba laptop. This product was easy to set up using Ubuntu. It didn't work right out of the box, but was able to get working with a simple tweak to the settings on the laptop.

I have been using this product with no problems what so ever.

Not a lot to choose from, this will have to do!, August 11, 2007

This is the second one, the first one I got really didn't work. There is not a lot to choose from out there so this is as good as I could find. Does not work as well with the matching modem as i would have thought. The booster is just a gimmick, it didn't really boost anything.

Works, but it takes time to acquire IP address, May 13, 2007

I purchased this one to use the "speedbooster" feature in mhy router... Could not see any performance change. Also the card takes a LOOONG time to acquire IP address... I would stick with the built-in WIFI.

The best wireless card available!, March 21, 2007

Pound for pound (gram for gram) quite possibly the best laptop card out there. I have had no problems at all with connectivity anywhere in my residence.

Ease of usage: Put in CD -> point and click setup -> put card in -> surf the net!

Outstanding Wireless Solution for Notebooks, February 8, 2007

I got this product from a local store and it did not come with a CD. I was able to easily locate and download the driver from Cisco's website.

With the exception of getting the driver files, it is a truly plug and play device. Once the software is installed (about 5 minutes), then the thing turns on and detects available networks and voila, you are hooked up!

I have used this for wireless service during a hospital stay, on my home network for entertainment purposes, and more recently, for my work laptop. Easy to set up and I have had no problems-all issues I have experienced have been related to the networks I was trying to connect to.

HIGHLY recommend this wireless-G notebook adapter.

Linksys again shines, February 2, 2007
By Changes in Latitude (Appleton, WI)
CD spun up, couple of clicks, this Linksys card inserted into Dell Latitude C610 without mini pci card, followed instructions, couple more clicks, and online. It performs as expected, range is as expected, no disconnects as yet, using Linksys wireless router also, signal diminishes to 20% at times but bytes still get sent and DSL speed remains constant. It works for me, and was easier than I expected

Notebook adapter works well. However, I am not getting the range as advertised. My home is 3600 sqft. Having low signal problems in the kitchen. If you are needing more than 50 ft of wireless range I would definitly go with the new wireless N set up.

Linksys is a poor product. The range from the computer to our laptop changes. You can sit in the same place and have different connections (good, excellent, etc..) We have had to replace our card several times, as it just stopped working and would malfunction. The worst is customer service. My husband spent hours on the phone with the customer support person in India. The gentleman could not understand that our laptop would not connect and kept asking my husband to go online with the laptop, he also kept saying, "We may lose the internet connection", when there was NO internet connection. After 45 minutes the man said, " I hope your problem never gets fixed, I'll now connect you with the best technician in the world." Then he hung up on my husband. The next person was in the Philippines and helped a bit, but we are still not connected and have had to take our laptop to a technician to repair the damage done to our laptop by the first technician who was doing nothing other than reading off a script of problem solving. He created a bridge on our system for our TWO computers. We will be throwing away our Linksys system and buying something that is easier to use and set up and has better customer service. I would never deal with this company or advise anyone to buy a product having to deal with hostile and angry technicians. Having help with any product purchased is very important. After the 3 hours of time spent with several technicians it is clear they are reading off a script and going down the line of problems and don't know what they are doing.
UPDATE: We contacted Linksys in CA (not an easy task) and have recieved several phone calls...one apologizing for the rudeness of the technician and another from a CA tech trying to help us fix our computer. This tech knew what he was talking about and has been helpful. I'm not changing the rating though...they record these sessions, they should make sure their technicians are helpful and not hurtful.

First time using wireless, November 14, 2006
By M. ODONNELL (Pennsylvania, USA)
The Linksys WPC54GS Wireless-G card that we ordered was shipped and received quickly. The installation was fairly easy, directions included with card. Since the setup, the card has enable us to receive/send emails using Comcast DSL while visiting family, the wireless network available at a major chain hotel while on business travel, and at home on a secure Verizon wireless network. It is simple to search for an available wireless network, change between the last used service provider and reconnect if the signal gets dropped. Once home again, it recognizes the need for a secure logon and requests the needed connection information. We highly recommend this product.

Upgraded to solve security issue., November 14, 2006
By Phillip Todd
I decided to upgrade my laptop with the wpc54gs from the wpc54g. I did this because the "g" card would randomly disconnect when the WEP or WPA security was activated. Living in a home near about 6 other networks I really wanted the router and wireless network secured. So, I purchased this card to see if it would fix my problem. I can happily say it solved the random disconnect with WPA security turned on. The range is just fine and all my network connections seem solid. Have not had a disconnect yet, over the last 5 hours.

The reason I took away one star is the fact on the Wireless Network Monitor V2.1 there seems to be a flaw. When I connect to the network and internet the monitor says it is hooked to the network but unable to find the internet. Obvious by my submission of this review, the internet can be found and used.

All in all a good product that functions just fine in my A45-S121 Toshiba laptop.

This was easy to set-up and use. It receives the signal from the router in all the rooms in my house.

It works just like it says. I was looking for a wifi card to replace one I broke and got a great deal on this one. So far it seems to be a good product.

The Version 2 Card is Good, July 13, 2006
By Joe (Long Beach, California United States)
The provided software is largely immaterial to the Linux user, only implementing the drivers (in conjunction with ndiswrapper & wpa_supplicant) found in the /Driver/NT/ subdirectory of the supplied CD.

This is a good, full-speed performer for pretty-much any Linux-based laptop/notebook, you'd care to throw at it.

WPA & WEP are fully-supported, and connections are easy to establish and maintain over relatively long distances between the card and AP.

Overall, I am very satified with the operation of this card, and would recommend it for those who have concerns about providing wireless b/g connectivity for Linux-based laptops & notebooks.

I would buy another one, were the need to arise.
