Good card, bad software, April 24, 2006
By Emmanuel R. Flores (ABQ, NM)
I bought this card and only kept it for a week because it was incompatible with my laptop. That's not to say the card itself was the problem, I do believe it may have been overheating my laptop and/or it was drawing too much power. I'm not positive. However, it did run and connect to wireless network just fine. I believe I would have been satisfied had there not been problems with my laptop.
The only gripe I do have is the software that came with it. Everything felt too compact and it was a little vague as to how to make a new profile or setup a new access point. I decided to just turn off that software monitoring and use windows version of that.
The card isn't bad if it works with your system, but I think a lot of these problems may stem from the system it's being put into.

What T. Eagan Said...., March 23, 2006
By Ctrl+Alt+Del (USA)
From reading other reviews, it seems that many laptops "like" this card and special speed-boost management software. But some laptops - like mine - will not work with the card and software. I followed the advice submitted by T. Eagan in the review about five down from this one. This was after hours of trying unsuccessfully on my own, and with the help of the nice (but worthless) folks in Bombay at Toshiba and Linksys tech support. Blow away all the software and registry entries Eagan mentions, uninstall the card via Device Manager. Physically remove the card. Reboot. Insert card. Let Windows New Hardware Wizard detect the card. Do not take the option to let the Wizard automatically search for the driver. Load the CD and cancel the CD's attempt to automatically install its programs. Point the Windows new hardware wizard to the CD drive and let it find the driver. Install the driver. Go into the wireless network card settings and enter the encryption settings, key, etc, as needed. You should be good to go. T. Eagan gets all the credit.

Very pleased with the wireless performance, August 11, 2005
By eau (USA)
I use Linksys WPC54GS in my notebook to connect to my WRT54GS router with very good results. It stays connected all the time in the Speedbooster mode. Although the signal strength is not always at the fullest but it never loses a connection. I haven't tried to explore the range of the wireless connection but I don't have a problem staying connected within the boundary of my house and lot.
Setup was a breeze. I installed the software, keyed in the security settings from my router, plugged in the adapter and bingo, the notebook was online!

I'm actually... pleased!, July 24, 2005
By -C (Nutley, NJ USA)
I've taken Linksys to task on the 54GS series in other reviews, and I did not think highly of their install software for the WUSB11 either. So, when I needed a laptop card to connect to my home network, I bought the WPC54GS expecting some installation challenges... and didn't have any.
I mean, I had absolutely no problems with the installer this time around. Linksys puts "Run CD First" stickers on the card, on the CD, all over the box. So I ran the CD first. It installed all of the software, exited. Then nothing, as in, "what next?" I inserted the card, and several Microsoft digital signature warnings later, my card found my access point.
I had to log into my router from another machine to add the laptop's MAC, then key-in the password on the laptop for access to the router... and that was it. A fully encrypted connection, pretty fast from what I can tell, and no drops. I don't get the 125% speeds I should be getting (my other wireless link is the internal PCI card, and it goes 108Mbps almost always), but I'm satisfied.
One star withheld for the lack of Speedboosting, but the improved installer and sticker madness made me feel better about Linksys gear.

Well it'll go up the pole but I wouldn't salute it., July 22, 2005
By T. Eagan
It's okay after you get thru the awkward set up, I mean I followed the directions and ran the CD first. Using windows XP Pro and all updates to present. Rebooted and it looked like it was going to be a grand day, the monitor program that had been installed reported fantastic 125% speed (whatever that means) with my system sitting 9ft from my wrt54gs v2 then things got unstable and I had to drop the system and flush all references to linksys and funksoftware as well as odyssey off my system using add/remove, norton, regedit etc (several hours)okay here we go again. insert card with system running. asked for driver and directed windows to the linksys cd. 3 drivers found, 1 oem linksys, 1 cisco-linksys (TOTALLY DID NOT WORK ON MY SONY VAIO) and 1more linksys which finally flew. Security set up offers all sorts of options I chose WEP and MAC and the result was a fantastic increase in speed, almost like a wired 10/100.I'd like some more updated software for XP use since all I can tell now is that I have excellent signal/connection and 54 speed but where is the speed-booster part? Yes all devices are set to G-only and are "Speed-Booster" by Linksys. I also have been an avid Firefox user with Sun Java. USE EXPLORER at Linksysfix sites like check, easy etc. I have used Norton internet link speed utility but I'm not sure of the accuracy.

Up and running quickly, good customer support, July 16, 2005
By Sweet Ruckus (Tennessee)
I'm a novice to the wireless internet. This card with the linksys speedbooster works quite well. I had some trouble setting it up with WEP encryption but linksys support had me up and running within 10 minutes. Tried D-link before, it's complete junk (no wonder they're practically giving it away with rebate). Spend a little more, you'll be happy.

Decent wireless adapter, July 8, 2005
By Rocky Moutain Gal (Colorado)
I purchased a Linksys WPC54GS after buying a Dlink wireless card that simply did not work with my IBM laptop. The installation procedure on the Linksys was very smooth and intuitive and it worked immediately after installation. The card gets decent wireless reception in all areas of my house (with my Linksys router with SpeedBooster). All-in-all a decent product with good performance. The speed could be a bit better but at least it works!

Didn't work with my Linksys 802.11b network - took it back, May 29, 2005
By Pauli
Maybe the card was defective, I don't know. The box says it would work with my BEFW11S4 which is 802.11b, but it didn't - I could connect to the unit, but couldn't get to the internet. All my other Linksys stuff has worked great - that's why I bought this. I got a D-Link wireless card and it worked immediately.

Easy Install But Speed Seems Slow, March 9, 2005
By Brookworld (Silicon Valley, CA)
March 3 -- I use this with the companion Linksys 54GS Wireless Router. Installation was relatively easy - - use the setup CD before plugging in anything. With the Router, I did not plug/unplug anything until instructed by the CD. Once the wired PC & Network was working, I went to the laptop, and again, did not plug in the Card until instructed to (running pokey Windows 2000). First try didn't work, but a re-install did work, and am quite happy it works. However, the laptop is in the next room, about 20 feet away, and the max throughput I get is about 11mps, far from the 54mps max. for the g standard; sometimes I get only 5 mps. It's also confusing to know whether Speedboster is operating or not; the Survey will sometimes show Speedbooster, and other times, just the speed. However, it is mainly for multi-use of our DSL (300K-1 mps), so speed is not too important yet. But I am concerned about range - - if 20 feet in my layout is a 50% signal, then what would happen at a longer distance, say 50 feet?? The solution may be to raise the Router higher, but that means using much longer cables, and dangling them where they can be seen. Well, not a bad product, but range & quality signal is disappointing to me. Added on May 3 - after 2 months of use, would say that a PC card is NOT recommended for a stationary wireless setup. 2mps became typical speed (remember, 20 feet away from the Linksys Wireless router). My wife gave up in frustration as it was no better than dial-up. My brother suggested it was interference from the laptop and antenna obstruction. I sprung for a USB adapter so I can place it on the shelf and got 85% signal and 36-54mps speed (nominal - not real life) readings (however, I'm struggling with trying to get the USB to connect consistly, but that's another product review).

Solid Adapter, March 8, 2005
By citan-uzuki (Georgia, USA)
This is another solid product from Linksys. The adapter functions like an adapter should function. The installation was simple and free of complications. I have not experienced any break in communication between the laptop and the router.
For your information, this card is installed on a Dell Latitude C610 laptop. The operating system on the laptop is Windows 2000. The other components of my network are as follows: A Dell Dimension 8200, with a Linksys desktop adapter(with Speedbooster also). The Dell is running with Windows XP Pro. The second PC in the system is an old IBM 300PL, which is connected directly to the router through ethernet. A Linksys WRT54GS (Speedbooster) ties it all together. The network has been solid. No drop-offs.
There is really only reason that this adapter did not get five stars from me. In my opinion, the range of the card should have been greater. Even with a straight line of sight from the router, I cannot go far without losing a high percentage of the signal. So far, that has not caused any issues. However, I probably cannot go to the garage and surf the internet, for example.
I can recommend this card to a home user. In a home environment, the limited range of the card should not be an issue at all. For business use, I would probably try to find a Cisco Aeronet.

great product from Linksys, February 17, 2005
By B. Gibson (N.Kingstown, RI)
I use this WPC54GS with my Thinkpad T30. Setup was easy with the software they give you. I also bought the WRT54GS router. I have a cable modem so its very fast. I can be online at the kitchen table (with my thinkpad) while the kids are online in the study. Had an issue with setting up when my laptop did not get connected to internet. Just redid the settings and bingo it worked. Pay attention and write down settings while you do the initial router setup. Your adaptor settings must be the same.

Works wonderful, January 31, 2005
By Husam J. Alnajjar (Seattle, WA USA)
I read some of the reviews, and got convinced to bye Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster and this Adapter. This was my first ever wirless connection installation. I just read what the product manual told me to do, and the rest was taken care off by Win Xp. I have no problems so far (I have been using it for 6 months). I am using it with a compaq labtop 1500. The house I live in has concrete walls and ceilings. This could be a problem between levels but not between walls. So far all my use for the network is in one level, but if I choose to widen my network to another level in the house, I will try to set it up higher than it is now, or just get a booster for the other level.

Didn't Work, January 6, 2005
By Funtooosh
Bought the card to match the Linksys Speedbooster Router, but the card didn't work well enough...My old Orinoco card (802.11b) worked seamlessly with the router also the inbuilt Intel-Pro wireless card (802.11g) worked with the router without a glitch. I tried upgrading the firmware etc as specified by Linksys but it didn't help. Finally I am returning the card.

Excellent item from Linksys., January 4, 2005
By Whutever
I purchased this item with the Linksys WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point and had no issue's that other reviewers spoke of. Installation and setup was straight forward to the point it and it seems silly to mention it but all I did was follow the step by step instructions. I have two of them installed in both an IBM T40 running WinXP SP1 and a Gateway Solo 9550 running WinXP SP2. We have a 2400+ sq. ft. home and even when I am on the other side of the house the speed only drops to 36 Mbps or so. So from my perspective, this works wonderfully and am thoroughly enjoying the freedom to roam around the house with my laptop. I should also note that we have 5.8Ghz cordless phones. My previous experience was that 2.4Ghz phones interferred with the wireless network.

It works great once it's set up., December 5, 2004
By Rockie Bear (Gaithersburg, MD)
I just set up a home network with Linksys BEFCMU10 EtherFast Cable Modem, Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster and this Adapter. The set-up of this Adapter was a little troublesome. My problem was I didn't use a 10-digit WEP password, instead, I used a 8-digit password. I wasn't given any error message, neither I can find any help from the linksys web. Once I changed to 10-digit password. This adapter works very great, fast and makes me very happy.

wireless pcmia by linksys, November 20, 2004
By 4calcio (malibu , cally)
the card works great . some of the previous reviewers are just not computer savy . the card is usually recognized immediately by the computer . if for some reason it does not work then just go to system info and click on device manager and look to see if the driver is installed . if it is not installed it will have a yellow question mark on it . just click on that and reinstall the driver then restart your computer and voila you're connected . computer ignorance should take the blame in the previous reviews that were negative . the product works great . good luck !
