Description:
The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer lets you connect a USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your ""print share PC"" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work. Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly over 54Mbps Wireless-G (802.11g). The wireless option lets you put your printer wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printer it's connected to. And if you don't use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs. The USB port is compatible with USB 1.1 printers, as well as printers that support the new high-speed USB 2.0 specification for even faster throughput. Your data is protected by up to 128-bit WEP encryption, or pre-shared-key WPA. A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the three megabyte print buffer size handles even large graphics-intensive print jobs. Let the Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer for USB 2.0 bring efficiency to your printing tasks.

It works BUT!, March 3, 2006
By nomadjon (Columbia, New Jersey USA)
This did not work out of the box as the directions state it should. I am very tech savvy and I had to call Linksys support because the unit does not install as per directions. It seemed like they know this and did not bother to update the driver disc or directions. Also be prepared to deal with overseas tech support to that country that seems to support every product known to mankind. Nice people but I can't stand explaining things over 2 times let alone 10. If you are not tech savvy you will be on the phone for awhile. It's too bad because I have other Linksys equipment that sets up and works flawlessly.

Excellent Value Once It's Configured, February 28, 2006
By tvoltagg (Cherry Hill, NJ)
The installation and configuration was not clear, but after several attempts, I got it to work and it has been working fine for over a month. Their documentation needs vast improvement for anyone but an experienced computer user.

Easy to install, has been trouble free, February 27, 2006
By M. Rudolph (Loveland, CO United States)
I got this print server because all my other wireless networking equipment is Linksys and I have implemented WPA security and this print server supports WPA.

It was was tremendously easy to install (I have it connected to a Hewlett-Packard 2550n Color LaserJet printer). It probably took me more time unpacking the printserver from it's shipping box and getting all the cables and everything accounted for than it took to actually install, that's how quick and easy it was. I had already installed the drivers for my printer (which the installation tells you to do if you haven't already) and it found the printer and in no time I had printed a test page wirelessly. Be aware that this print server still needs to install it's own drivers on any system that you want to use to print to your wirelessly connected printer, so if you have several systems you don't need to do the complete setup on each one, but you do need to install the print server driver (and of course the printer driver). Just as a note, I came here and read many of the other reviews before I bought this print server. I know that many reviews here are negative about Linksys and their tech support etc... I can't help but think that some of the issues those reviewers have had are "end-user" related/caused or because they didn't do enough research (finding out for sure if it works with multi-function printer/scanner/faxes before buying). I haven't had to call Linksys tech support and the only issue I ever had with something not working was my fault (I had a space in the name of my SSID of my access point/router, and when installing my linksys wireless ethernet bridge, it didn't like it, but that was easily solved by taking the space out of the SSID name.)

I would recommend this and any other Linksys products as all that I have (wireless access point/router, cable modem, wireless ethernet bridge, wireless print server) work seamlessly and without problem. Just do your homework and make sure that the product will support what you want to use it with, whether that be a certain brand or type of printer, or security mode (some only support WEP) etc....

Difficult to install and configure. It does not print., February 14, 2006
By Patrick L. Murphy (Virginia)
Two years ago I tried this printserver and it did not work. However with a little more understanding of wireless, home network using Linksys cable modem and router plus laptop and desktop computer and two Tivos, I naively thought I could provide wireless printing for the downstairs laptop. Nada! After numberous attempts to install/deinstall/configure I never got the first page of print. Save your $85.

    Great Buy, February 10, 2006
By K. Arnold (Tennessee)
I was very pleased with this print server. I had trouble installing it initally, but Linksys customer service is excellent. I got to chat online with a technician who walked me through all of the steps and helped me overcome any challenge I had. Now that it's working the print server works great! I highly recommend this and other Linksys products.

    piece of doo-doo, February 9, 2006
By Chet Marino (Walnut Creek, CA USA)
If it doesn't work with multi-function printers, then why don't they say that on the box?? It didn't even work with my Epson C80 printer which isn't multifunction. The documention is non-existant and the setup program does anything but. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with some chick from India with an accent so thick I finally told her "I'm sorry, but I just can't take this any more." You couldn't give me another LinkSys print server.

A little trouble configuring wirelessly, February 8, 2006
By David H. Brown
After setup, the printer would work if the print server was connected to the router with an ethernet cable, but it would not connect to the router wirelessly. If you're having similar problems, follow these instructions. Set the print server up so that it's connected to the router with the ethernet able and make sure it's working. Now go into the setup of your router by typing in the IP address of the router and logging in. It should be 192.168.1.1 or something of that nature. Next, click on the wireless tab and the wireless security subtab. Write down what your Wireless encryption level is (i.e. 64 or 128 bits), the default transmit key, and the WEP Keys (There are four of them). Now, log into the wireless print server by typing in it's IP address. It should be something like 192.168.1.101. Click on the wireless tab and the security subtab. Change the security mode to the wireless encryption level (i.e. 64 or 128 bits), the default transmit key, and the WEP keys. Now unplug the ethernet cable from the print server then the power cable. Plug the power cable back in to reboot the print server. Now your print server should work. If this does not work, you may have to go under the protocol tab and enter the IP address manually rather than have it obtain the IP address automatically. It was a pain to get it working, but once I did the product has been wonderful. I hope this can be of some help.

    It's so easy to setup I couldn't believe it, February 6, 2006
By Fai K. Le (Phoenix, AZ USA)
I was a little worried after reading some of the negative comments before purchasing this, but after returning the Netgear PS121 to Bestbuy there wasn't anything else for me to choose from... regardless, I couldn't be happier with my purchase after spending so many hours of frustration with Netgear's product. Setting up the Linksys WPS54G on my wireless network was so easy and it was even easier adding my other computers once the inital print server was setup. Their quick installation guide is very detailed with really easy to follow, step-by-step, illustrated instructions... unlike the product I bought from Netgear.

Linksys Print Server, February 1, 2006
By magicwand (Northville, MI.)
Perfect for my application. A remote printer without wires accessible from three computers located on three different floors in my house. It has worked flawlessly.

I have several Linksys products. Their telephone help, or chat help are effective and responsive at any time of day/night. That is probably the single safety valve for getting into trouble.

I am computer literate but no longer technology current.

Hate this print server, January 31, 2006
By brasaguy (Seattle, WA United States)
After 2 hours with Linksys help, they finally decided that this would not work with a B protocol router and I should either replace the router or just keep the ethernet cable connected to the router and print server. Doesn't exactly sound "wireless" to me. I am returning this print server and am DONE buying Linksys products.

No problems... Great Print Server, January 22, 2006
By Ricky (Little Rock, AR)
I read all the negative reviews on this print server and hesitated before purchasing. I'm glad I got it. It serves my purpose without a hitch.

I had no problems installing it after disabling the firewall.
I setup WPA security without a problem. Disabled SSID broadcast after installing and all is good.

I was concerned about using a printer with USB to Parallel conversion cable, but no problem!

Just make sure you configure the print server with SSID broadcast enabled and have it connected by ethernet before going wireless. After disconnecting the ethernet cable turn off/unplug the print server for 10 seconds and plug back in and it recognized the wireless network.
Hope this helps someone!

Printer not compatible, January 22, 2006
By Elusive1 (Renton, WA United States)
After a few hours of trying every possible option and 2 different printers I was told by customer service that both of my printers would not work with the WPS54G. My printers are the Epson CX4200 and the HP PSC 1350. I have asked for a list of approved printers from Linksys and I will post the list if I get it. I am very disapointed so far. There is nothing on the Linksys website that discusses this issue.

After about 5 hours of effort, it didn't work for me, January 21, 2006
By Christopher Evans
I spent about 2 hours with customer support (and before that about 3 hours on my own) trying to get this to work, but if they could have told me straight up that the hardware does not support all-in-ones (or if they had a list of supported printers somewhere) I would have appreciated it. I couldn't get it to work. Kudos to customer service for hanging in there with me. From the reviews, I guess it works fine on about 60% of the systems & configurations, for the rest of us the print server makes a nice conversation piece/coaster/hockey puck.

THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!!, January 18, 2006
By Choopia (Zionsville Indiana, USA)
This is a great investment. In 10 min. I was printing on my network. It was easy to install. I have a Dell printer and it runs smoothly. Great product. Thumbs up to LINKSYS!

Great print server!, January 18, 2006
By Kevin from IL
I installed a wireless network using the WRT54GX4 and three WPC54GX4 cards in desktop pc using a pci to pcmcia bridge card. I also have a WPS54G print server on my network. All use WPA2 for security. I repeat I use not only WPA but WPA2 as it is working quite well in my print server. I will say use the web pages published by the print server and not the configuration software that loads onto your computer. The software didn't make the wpa available but if you go to the web pages from the device it is all there and was a snap to configure!!

An update to this review, I have now had the unit in service for almost a year with zero problems!!! I would say this one is a keeper.

Difficult setup, lousy support, doesn't work with some printers, December 31, 2005
By Webster G. Marquez (Healdsburg, CA USA)
I don't need to beat a dead horse with this review, but it's important for buyers to know the following:

1. Linksys has sub-par tech support. Hold times averaged over an hour the few times I called.

2. Setup procedures are difficult for those who aren't completely conversant in network setup...I have set up a few home networks before and I spent more time setting this up than three other networks combined.

3. THIS UNIT DOES NOT SUPPORT MULTIFUNCTION PRINTERS (which are VERY common these days) and there is no indication on the package or in the marketing to reveal this.

I had to return the unit after six hours of trying to make it work.

Tread lightly.

in less than 15 minutes I can print from the backyard, December 30, 2005
By paednoch (Iowa)
I ignored the reviews of this product because most of the reviewer were complaining about the complexities of setup. Since I have only one laptop it was probably much much much easier for me to set up this print server. I have a laptop with a linksys wireless B card and a linksys wireless B router set open. You have to either be in my backyard or inside my house to pick up the signal from the router because it is placed in my basement. I live in a rural area so if a person tries to connect to my wide open router then you will also likely fighting off two very protective great Pyrenees and two blue heelers all of which individually bark very loud and likely kill you if this Author wasn't there to tell them that you were a freind. Besides it is almost impossible to drive down my remote drvieway without me knowing someone is there let alone attempting to access my wireless network. Anyways I set this thing up wirelessly. I didn't connect the print server to the router with a wire and I didn't connect my laptop to anything with a wire. It was all setup wirelessly and It took about 10-15 minutes. I am certain that the reason is becuase there is only one computer and one printer and one router involved but I now can sit on the deck and print to the printer that is hiddne away in a closet. It was very very easy to do.

I know what "WPS" stands for!!, December 30, 2005
By Randym9 (Florida, USA)
I received one of these for Christmas and have spent nearly four hours trying to set it up, including dealing with tech support.

They now tell me it won't work with my 802.11G D-Link Wireless Router or recognize my USB HP LJ1020 Printer. That it is "Not guaranteed to work with these devices."

I am taking it back for an exchange ASAP. Now I know what WSP stands for......... "What a Piece of ......."

Ask about your printer before you buy., December 8, 2005
By Russell L. Doty
Cisco may be engaging in unlawful and deceptive trade practices by stating that this print server will work with "most" type 1 & 2 USB printers. What does "most" mean?
I spent 6.5 hours on the phone with Linksys techs trying to get connected to my Canon i850s. Nothing on the web site, disc manual or box listing printers it would not work with--a clear failure to inform when they have to know it won't.
One of the questions the techs ask is whether you are running a multifunction printer. (I wasn't.)Apparently this print server does not work with many multifunction printers, but Linksys and Cisco do not state that anywhere that I could find. (After I buy the thing is not the time to find out I got the wrong product.)
Finally a senior tech came online and said the print server would not work with my printer. I asked him for a list of printers that it would work with and he listed a few, but he said they were not allowed to put the list up on the web site.
Whoah! So that's why I spend 6.5 hours to find out your product does not work. [...]
Others, save yourself the headache, buy someone else's product.
