| Description: |
| The LINKSYS WPS54GU2 lets you connect a USB or Parallel printer (or both!) directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees your "print share PC" so you don't have to leave it on all the time. And it removes the printing bottleneck, setting your PC free to do more useful work! Remotely administered through your web browser, SNMP, or the included utility |

Had it for 2 years and today it has crapped out..., July 14, 2006
By Tobor (Clinton, MD USA)
Used it with an HP Laser Jet 1200 (parallel port) and a Canon i320 on USB port.
The Item worked once configured without a hitch ... until lately now it intermittently with continuing frequecy is: "Printer not found on server, unable to connect" I kept powering it up and down, and could not reach from several machines on the same network. Could print to other machines/printers wirelessly... even plugged in a LAN cable. It works once than dies. It's time for a new one, don't know if it will be another of these or not.

Be weary of buying this print server (or any)..., July 8, 2006
By D. Citino (USA)
For a customer with novice-to-intermediate networking skills, this wireless print server is quite a challenge. Some key areas to think about:
1. Printer compatibilty - your printer (and its standard drivers) may never work with this print server. The problem is that Linksys support does not have a compatibility chart that they are willing to publish. I was told by a tech that my printer, Dell A960 is about "50-50" working with this print server. Needless to say I am on the wrong side of that 50. 2. Linksys support is nearly impossible to get tailored support from. The scripts their techs run through include things like re-installing the print server or re-installing your printer drivers. To intermediate users, this becomes an exercise in futility and a waste of time.
In summary, if you are not a networking and/or Windows driver superstar, I recommend weighing the convenience of using a wireless print server with the pain and anguish of trying to get one set up! Keep in mind, it may never work unfortunately!
Good luck!

Great product. Works fine., June 4, 2006
By C.J.G (Sydney, Australia)
After reading some of the other reviews I thought I would share my experience. Straight out of the box, following the documentation I couldn't get the Print Server to work. This was disappointing. An email to the tech support got a quick response within 24hrs with the answer.
1. First, it is necessary to connect the Print Server to your router by ethernet (wired) so the SSID and WEP key wireless parameters can be set on the device. I also found that the default wireless channel was set to 6. I'm using a cisco Aironet 340 access point and found I had to change the channel to 11. I had to power cycle the device after changing these settings.
2. Apparently, it needs additional setup to get the device working with windows XP/2000. Look in Linksys tech support knowledgebase: www.linksys.com/kb, and look at Answer ID 146. I had to select queue 'L2' as my printer connects to the USB port.
3. I recomend giving the Print Server a Static IP address. (You should be able to exclude this from the DHCP addresses allocated by your router). Otherwise, everytime you power cycle the Print Server it may get a new IP address. Then you will have to repeat the step 2 to set the printer driver device port on the PC to have the new IP address.
After that, Bob's your uncle :). BTW, I am using a dell 1710 printer. Cheers.

This print server just does not work, May 26, 2006
By G. LO (Fremont, CA)
I have an ordinary laser printer and this print server cannot print to that laser printer.
Technical support is useless. It just kept asking me useless questions.
Don't buy this product

Only one printer works, May 23, 2006
By Seek Wisdom (HOUSTON, TX USA)
Lots of calls to tech support and even have had a warranty exchange - still can not print to two printers. Only working with one printer.
Tech support told me, "that this print server only works with one printer, the USB and Parallel ports are to give you a choice of which printer you want to use." I said that the box says nothing of the sort (it actually says you can use two printers at the same time). Tech support also told me, "your Canon i850 inkjet might not work with this print server." Again, the box says nothing about this possible problem. I asked for a list of "non-supported printers", Tech support won't reveal them and won't post them on the Linksys website. They did say that many multi-function printers won't work, but this Canon is not a multi-function or all-in-one.
All of my other network parts are made by Linksys.

Look for compatibility. Where? Only Linksys knows, May 13, 2006
By E. Martinez (Laredo, TX United States)
I would recommend not to buy it, as it is not compatible with all the printers, you have to test it to see if it works with your printer. Linksys has a list of non compatible printers, but guess what... it is not available anywhere!!! If you want to lose your time and money, go for it.

A great way to make space around your PC, May 9, 2006
By Michel (Dubai)
I have the PrintServer working with two printers both HP. The first is an Old Parallel color printer mostly used by the kids for their "daily coloring duties" and the second is a photo quality USB printer used to print high quality documents and photos of course. The PrintServer worked fine with the Siemens Router and that allowed me to relocate the print stations elsewhere!!!!
The missing fifth star is due to the not so straight forward set up. 1-The key is to start by installing the printers directly on each of the PCs( 4 of them in this case) and that is not a so cool thing to do especially if two are desktops!!! This means physically connecting the printer to the PC and installing the drivers and making sure the printer works. 2-Then Follow the instructions literally. 3-My USB printer was not part of the listed printers so I chose another model and from every PC changed back to the right model ( It took me a while to figure that out) 4- Enjoy the new found space and the ability to print from more than one PC

When it works, it works!, April 24, 2006
By hal (Melbourne, FL)
When I received the Linksys WPS54GU3 I spent too much time trying to make it work. I called Linksys customer support and tried everything they suggested. It still wouldn't work as a "wireless" print server. I mailed it back and got another one that worked properly using my wireless network to set it up. It works great now with two computers and two printers on my wireless network. Looks like Linksys shipped a lot of untested product and is struggling to correct the problems. If I had it to do over again I would go with another brand. These people don't deserve good customers.

Dissappointing, April 16, 2006
By J69 (Littleton, co United States)
This server did not work with our system. We have a brand new Pavilion HP Laptop and a 3 yr old printer. After three separate phone calls to tech support and many failed tries to get the software to work, I just gave up.

Thanks for the warning., April 12, 2006
By Disgusted in Tunbridge Wells (Washington, DC, USA)
I was about to buy this product, until I read the review below warning that it will not work with an All-in-One printer. I checked with Linksys, and they confirmed that there is a "compatibility issue," meaning that the printing function might work--they are even uncertain about that--but the OCR scanning, fax, and image scanning functions will not work. Thanks for the warning. Linksys is certainly duplicitous in failing to disclose this information in their literature. Even Ma Bell used to say in the old days, "We may be the only phone company in town, but we try not to act like it..."

not a strategic product, March 16, 2006
By G. Bickner (Largo, FL USA)
This product doesn't support WPA encryption! If you've managed to get your network past WEP don't get this product. Makes you wonder if Linksys has any strategic direction.

Cool as the Other Side of the Pillow, March 15, 2006
By ametamorphic (East Haven)
This is a great item and easy to use. It is virtually a plug-and-play device. Instructions are quite logical and simple to follow. This is a great looking item and is quite innocuous looking in your living room or whatever room you choose to locate it. It is a durable and essential unit for your ever expanding needs.

Not for Multifunction Printers, March 11, 2006
By Diego E. Coppola
I tried unsuccessfully to install this WPS only to find out it does not support multifunction/ all in one printers. It is designed for "regular" printers according to Linksys live chat helpdesk. ++++++ MAKE SURE TO CHECK THAT YOUR PRINTER IS SUPPORTED BEFORE BUYING+++++++++

Worked right out of the box!!, March 10, 2006
By Zen Knitter (California, CA USA)
I love this easy to set up print server. I did however have to sit on the phone to figure out how to set up the second printer, but it was worth it! Now I can print from anywhere in the house! WOOHOO!

It took a while but I got it working, March 7, 2006
By L. Boal (Copperas Cove, TX USA)
We bought a new Dell and realized that parallel ports are a thing of the past - like floppy drives. We still have our HP Laserjet 1100 which still works great and that is why I got this print server which also works wireless. It took a while to set it up and I had to call customer support. Customer support did help me solve the problem but he wasn't too friendly. Now that I have it set up, it works great. I upgraded my router & notebook adapter to Wireless G too and that helped a lot. The print server is behind the printer and I have no problems printing from another room in the house. I installed the print server driver for my laptops and had no problems - at least I did not have to call customer support. I gave it a 4 star especially for the parallel port and wireless features. Wish it would work for my all-in-one USB printers.

Good product but no security features, March 3, 2006
By Fazle Khan (usa)
The product over all is good but came no use to me since it is not compatible to Linksys router WEP security. It works only if the router's wireless security is disabled.

Set Your Printer Free!, February 24, 2006
By Linden Gibson (Raleigh, NC USA)
It works. What more can I say? I attached my Deskjet 1000 to the parallel port and my Deskjet 6540 to the USB port and both work fine. Very very handy if you don't have a huge desk to park all your printers, scanners, and associated peripherals in one place.

Isn't compatable with new printer., February 22, 2006
By Scott Waldron (Chaska, MN United States)
I use a new HP laserJet 1022 printer. This particular print server is not compatable with it. I called linksys and after much wasted time, I was informed that there was no way to solve the incompatability issue. I wish I had know about this before I purchased the item. EVERYON BEWARE! CHECK WITH LINKSYS FIRST TO SEE IF YOUR PRINTER IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PRODUCT!

Doesn't work with Dell Printers, January 29, 2006
By J. Carlos
I have a dell all-in-one 924 printer and I couldn't get this print server to work. I spent 2 hours with Linksys support with no success. I've returned this product about a week after I purchased it.
