Apparently does not work with a multifunction printer, December 9, 2005
By Dan (Washington DC)
Would have been nice to know this before I wasted time and money on this piece of junk.

    Incompatible, November 30, 2005
By K. Robb
Using Windows XP PC and HP Laserjet 1200 to set it up-
The instructions in the box are very incomplete. Several additional steps are needed to set it up, and it doesn't tell you how to get wireless access. I spent an hour on the phone with tech support, half an hour of which was on hold. Linksys tech support came to the conclusion that I need to call Hewlett Packard tech support, which is absurd. I could print test pages from my PC, but not documents, so there was communication between the devices but they could not help me figure out what was wrong. I think it will eventually work, but there are a ton of problems to deal with in setup.

Out of the box this device has clear directions. I did not believe them so I just plugging in the CD and blindly followed the steps to first setting up the print server on the wireless router then setting it up on each computer separately. The trick was to have the computer already using the printer before setting up the print server. The software does all the work and uses the DHCP from the router.

Just a note I did set up the WAP as I have neighbors.

Even with the server hidden behind the printer I get reception a hundred feet away with no problem. I have not tried farther.

Still not working.., October 17, 2005
By I Count
My home wireless network and all of the components are linksys products and for the most part they work well.. I thought the WPS54GU2 Wireless-G Print Server would be an easy addition to my network setup. Well no such luck. The directions were clear but just did not work for my printer. I called the Linksys help desk and they helped me determine that my printer was not capatible with the server. Information tha would have determined my purchase.Bottom line make sure you have a capatible printer.

Terrible, weird disappointing product with no WPA support--returned it, September 22, 2005
By Gerald F. Kelly (Santa Monica, CA USA)
I had been very happy with my Linksys B and G wireless routers, so I decided to give this a shot. What a mistake! I didn't realize until I tried to set this up that it doesn't support WPA security, only the older insecure WEP. That's not acceptable. I cannot lower the security of my network to use this product and I wouldn't recommend anyone else doing so. Another weird thing is that it requires a print server driver to be installed on every computer that will use the print server. Why ? Overall a very poor design that should have never been made. I expect more from Cisco.

This unit has less problems than other wireless print servers that are only USB. It is nice also to have a parallel port too.

I highly recommend it. I wish they would invent a bi-directional unit as well for my scanner.

LINKSYS PRINT SERVER REVIEW, August 16, 2005
By Francis J. Fassino (Sebring, FL United States)
Received it and installed it the same day. Extremely easy to install and was up and running with it in about 15 minutes. Have a total Linksys wireless system and have found each module east to install and use. No problems. I do wish, however, that they had 2 usb ports rather than one.

Live, learn, don't buy linksys, August 13, 2005
By Denis Pelletier (Vacaville, CA)
Obviously after reading a few of the previous reviews, 2wire router and an HP psc printer....don't even try the linksys. Tech support forgot to mention incompatibility with either and ran me round and round. You need a new printer driver, upgrade the firmware, reset the print server, reset it again, reload the upgraded firmware, sorry I have alot better thing to waste my time on thanks. I keep waiting for the paycheck to come from linksys, but I don't think it is coming.

Great Printer, Great Tech Support, Poor Documentation, August 9, 2005
By The BBQ Institute (Seattle Area)
If you have a Linksys router the a Linksys print server is your best bet. If you don't have a Linksys router then ask your router tech support folks for advice as different brands of routers and print server are often not compatible, sad but true :(

I was looking for a print server for a home with two desktop PC's and one laptop and two printers. Having done my homework I knew that this server would only work with a Linksys router which is what I have. One printer connects to a USB port and the other one to a Parallel port. A word of caution here print servers work with printers not multi function printer/scanners.

The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is you should just plan on spending 30 to 45 minutes on the phone with Linsys' excellent tech support folks the first time you set it up. Thankfully support is 7x24 and toll free. The manual is not fit to hang on an outhouse nail it's so worthless.

My experience: the provided installation manual is useless, August 5, 2005
By Michael Perkins (Lexington, KY)
It didn't take me two hours of continuous work to install it but it did take a while. Following the instructions provided, it would not "find" my print server. You HAVE TO PLUG IT INTO THE ROUTER. This is not optional as the manual is not too clear about. You must have it wired to the router for installation and if successful then you can use the wireless function.

You don't need to hook it up to the printer until the print server is found and configured by the setup utility. The setup wizard was pretty much useless because if the system can't find the print server then you can't get any further in the setup process.

I was able to find the print server on the network after disabling the firewall, and installing the bi-admin utility to setup and configure the print server. I assigned it an ip address, assigned the wireless router it was on, and then setup the assigned ip address as DMZ. (I don't have much experience in networking except that I setup my own network of three wireless routers and one wired router.) All of this I found out from reading much more knowledgable and concise reviews further down this thread.

It can be done but it is probably a nightmare for anybody that expects to plug it in and just install the driver or for that matter follow the useless intstructions word for word.

Useless Piece of Junk, August 3, 2005
By George W. Mays (San Antonio, TX USA)
Normally I like Linksys products. But this time they let me down big-time. Let me say that I have worked in computing, data communications, and networking for over 35 years; so if I have problems with something like this then you can be rather assured that many, many people will. I tried this thing first with an HP multifunction printer, no luck, tech support, no luck, tinkered, got it to function with problems. Then I thought that maybe it was just some quirky behaviors of the HP, so I tried it with another printer, an Epson this time. Same disappointing results. Save your money --- buy ANYTHING other than this piece of junk.

    stinks, August 2, 2005
By David Caskey (Shreveport, La. United States)
I tried to set this up on my system and failed. I called the customere service center and spent two hours, they failed. I had a visit by a local tech who can fix anything, he failed. Why they sell the product is a deep question that ranks up there with why we exist.

Misleading, sloppy, incomplete manual, August 2, 2005
By Robert S. Papanos
If I did not already understand wireless networking and security, I never would have been able to get it working. Yes, it works fine, but I cannot recommend the unit. How expensive or how difficult can it be to write a concise and accurate manual? I came close to returning the unit, but found nothing better.

Money down the drain, July 29, 2005
By Nino (Beirut, Lebanon)
I'll get straight to the point: don't even think about buying this useless product.
After battling with it for about 14 hours (I'm a wireless network engineer), solving problem after problem and reconfiguring my entire network, it still didn't work.

I used to be an avid linksys (Cisco) fan, now my trust has completely dissolved. I have to admit that working with linksys products is no walk in the park, but at least I could make them work after an hour or so. My entire network is composed of linksys components, and this is the first time I have to say I've had it with them!

I won't go into details of how I solved some of the tedious problems I faced, because you will end up right where you first started... nowhere! When I finally thought I made it work, the WLAN light went off and lost connection to the printer in the middle of a job.

No support for WPA, no recent firmware upgrade (dates back to 2003), customer support is rude and useless. Don't waste your time.

Buy D-Link (cheaper) or Hawking instead.

Great Price, Great Range, July 28, 2005
By Mike Volker
I purchased and installed this Linksys wireless print server and it works great. The printer is upstairs in a large 2-story house and we can print from any room in the house. It is compact, light and can have two print devices connected, one USB and another serial.

Be aware that it has its own power cord to plug into the wall and the installation instructions are not that clear. If I recall correctly, the instructions tell you to install the printer driver on your PC before installing the software, but it only worked for me when I first installed the printing software and then the driver. Just be aware that you may need to play with it a bit, but it's by no means to hard for an average computer user. The price was great and it works wonderfully once installed.

Works as advertised, July 24, 2005
By D. Bailey
Found all the previous reviews helpful. Am using the server wired to my network (no wireless) with an HP LaserJet on parallel port, printing from 2 XP Prof computers on the network. The setup utility on CD-ROM failed to save at the end so had to switch to the web-based interface - learned this from previous failed Linksys product installs. Followed the instructions on the user guide on the CD-ROM to complete the setup via this interface and both computers are printing without a hitch. For reviewers complaining that their multifunction devices won't work - Linksys' web site for this product does say from the start that these devices aren't supported. Another note from Linksys manual is that they recommend that bidirectional printing be turned off for attached printers. This can be done (in XP) from Printers and Faxes, right-click your printer, select Properties, select the Ports tab, deselect bidirectional printing.

    Never worked., June 12, 2005
By youngprof (Oklahoma)
This printserver was touted on the box as being compatible with any printer (mine's only a single-function Brother), but it never worked with mine. I followed the directions exactly, but still nothing. So much for ease of use. I ended up buying a different printserver and everything worked great the first time.

Can't make it work, manual sucks, May 12, 2005
By PeteC
I just spent a depressing 2.5 hours trying to get a friend's computer and printer to work using this print server. What a mess and failed in the end.

This setup has been working for 3 months. Suddenly the computer gives a "Cannot Connect". It isn't the print server and it isn't the WI-Fi board.

System Configuration: Two computers, one on a router, one using a PCI Wi-Fi board, one print server and one printer. All WI-Fi components are Linksys. Cable Modem. The computer connected to the router prints fine (= printer, print server, and Wi-Fi work). The one with the PCI card accesses the internet fine (= Wi-Fi board and router "talk"). This same one can't connect to the printer like it used to. The printer is there but the test page doesn't print and a "Cannot Connect" error is reported.

The manual on CD sucks. If you follow it precisely, you cannot make the thing work because it tells you to "cancel" before you finish. Trouble shooting just takes you to XP printer trouble shooting which is for connected printers.

How could a responsible company put something out like this?

Incompatable with many newer printers, May 4, 2005
By Stephen R. Balzac (Stow, MA USA)
The linksys device looks good, but it doesn't support multi-function printers. The only way to use the print server with an all-in-one printer, is to disable the copy, scan, fax capabilities. Sort of defeats the purpose. Linksys did say that they'll update the driver eventually, since 80% of printers are now multi-function, but they had no idea when.

NO WPA ENCRYPTION - only WEP, April 13, 2005
By Rizano (New Jersey, USA)
The unit worked well but was a bit difficult to get setup. I needed to call Linksys and they walked me through the setup. I have better than average networking knowledge but that didn't help me install this on my own. Once setup however, it worked very well but in the end, I decided to return it because of poor security. The print server does not support strong WPA encryption. It only supports weaker WEP encryption. Linksys said they do not have a time table to upgrade the firmware of this unit so I decided to return it. No sense in taking chances with your personal data.
