Fast, Stable and Connected at 150 mbps!!, August 5, 2008

After 8 years using an old linksys B router, I dicided to upgrade to a faster wireless router. I choose the WRT100 because I was curious about the MIMO and it unoffically supported 80211n.
The setup up was very easy, took less than 5 minutes configuring the router's pppoe to connect to my ATT DSL.
Four laptops, macbook pro, macbook, dell inspiron 8200 running linux, and an old G4 powerbook, and one pc desktop, compaq pressario were all soon connected.
The range was very impressive and actually was able to pickup a strong signal from one block away. When using an n wifi card, the connection speed was about 70 as compared to a 54 when using a standard g wifi card. My macs have 80211n atheros cards and connected at speed greater than 54mbp at 70mbps. If you pair with a Linksys brand wifi card that supports mimo your speed would be much higher. My compaq desktop connected at 150mpbs.
When paired with the Linksys WUSB100 usb adapter on my compaq pc desktop, the connection speed was at 150mbps, much faster than a superG speed of 108mpb.
The WRT100 is actually the same unit as the newer WRT110. The internal circuitry is the same. Only difference is the updated outer casing. The firmware for the WRT110 can be used for the wrt100. I have updated the firmware of the wrt100 with the latest wrt110 firmware 104 which enables the "wifi protected setup" feature. Now the "reserved button" located on the top of the unit as a function and is enabled after updating to the 104 firmware. So now with the updated firmware, the WRT100 is now an actual WRT110!!!
I'm extremely satisfied with the WRT100, a fast and stable router.

First one worked for 4 months then died. RMA'd it and received a re-manufactured unit 3 weeks later. The re-manufactured replacement unit was doa. Now sending the re-manufactured unit back for another RMA replacement and another 3 week wait. Would not buy the wrt100 again or recommend it to others.

Solid Wireless Router, March 18, 2008

Before this Linksys, I owned a Belkin, which was a total pile of garbage. So to me, this is the best router ever built. Setup was fairly straightforward; they recommend that you use their CD installer, but you can configure it through the router's IP address instead (for more advanced users; details are in the owner's manual). I like that there is support for Wireless a/b/g and Wireless-N, and the signal strength is pretty strong all around the house. Whether this is because of the MIMO antenna or not, I'm not sure, but it seems to output a strong signal. I should mention that the first unit I purchased just magically stopped powering up, but I was able to return it back to the store for a new one, and I have had no problems since. I suspect that there was something wrong with the AC adapter. Other than this, I would recommend this router to anyone that wants Wireless-N at a reasonable price.

Performs great once it's setup., March 12, 2008

I've had this router for about 4 months. Initially it was more of a pain to set this up using the product wizard software. I am used to WRT54GS which is what I replaced for the WRT100 router. The older WRT54GS Linksys router was much easier to setup through the web browser interface. I tried initially setting this WRT100 router up the same way, but for some reason it would not login at first. I tried the software wizard route next, and it setup the router fine. Once I did this I uninstalled the wizard software and was able to login to the router via a browser and make further changes to the routers setttings. From that point on I can access the router and make changes as necessary through the web browser.
The nice thing about this router is that it has 802.11N Draft 2.0 compatability. It's not advertised as a wireless N router, but when setting it up from a web browser I can choose to use 802.11b/g/n mode. When using WPA2-AES security encryption it actually enhances my speed performance on my Toshiba Laptop with integrated dualband Intel 802.11N wifi. Instead of getting a 54Mbps connection, I get a 70Mbps connection. All of my older PC's using linksys 54GS PCI adapters have no problem finding the connection and staying connected at 54Mbps. Range is perfect for my 2 story house w/basement. I get an "Excellent" to "Very Good" signal on my desktop PC's and an "Excellent" on my Toshiba Laptop.
I also have connected to this router with an older laptop using a Netgear RangMax WPN511 PCMCIA card. This is a MIMO Super 108G card, and it connects to this router with an "Excellent" or "Very Good" signal at a constant 54Mbps rate.
I have had a total of 7 PC's wirelessly connected to this router for a LAN Party as well as a Linksys 54G Print Server. This is the most I have had connected at the same time, and I experienced zero problems with the router.
It handles DHCP very well compared to the WRT54GS router. Once a PC is connected to the router, the DHCP will assign it an IP address, and then you are given the option to reserve the assigned IP address to that PC's MAC address. This simulates a Static IP address for PC's connected via the DHCP. You could just manually assign Static IP addresses, but this is just easier IMO to have only one place to be able to change IP addresses etc...
The router also handles Peer-to-Peer applications better than the WRT54GS router. I can have more open connections at a time when using a BitTorrent application without the router bogging down. It can and will bogg down if you open too many connections, but it still handles the connections better.
Other than the initial setup process via the software, the only other issue I have with the router is the time it takes to save changes on the router. It seems to reboot the router every time you click the save button on the web browser. It takes even longer when making changes and saving them through the wizard software that linksys provides. It would be much less of a hassle if we could make all necessary changes to the router and have a single save button at the top of the firmware's webpage.

Will be returning this product. The range on the wireless networked computers is about 5 feet. Have also not been able to print using networked printers. May have been a defective/returned unit as there was also no owner's manual with the product.

A tough installation, February 2, 2008

We bought a WRT100 as we have some solid walls to penetrate, and after working on it with my local "guru" friend could not set it up for encrypted wireless. Concluded it was a faulty unit, exchanged unit. Today tried to install new one, using wireless encryption. After an hour on the phone with overseas advisor, with absoluteley no success, was advised to go to Linksys site and download different software. I couldn't get my computer to recognize the WRT 100 router. On-line tech support refused to help unless I paid them $30 because my linksys adapter was manufactured in 2004. Sending this puppy back.

Great product, HORRIBLE installer, January 10, 2008

I was replacing an old router that conked out all the time, requiring us to pull the plug and restart it. This new one, once we got it properly installed and configured, works just fine. The speed is pretty good: we're actually seeing a 30% improvement, for no discernable reason!
One of the reasons I bought this was because the range is supposedly good, but it hasn't worked out for me. It says it in the name: RangePLUS! With MIMO. However, my NYC apartment apparently has lead walls, or forms some sort of gaussian surface, because the signal does not make it from one bedroom to the other.
My BIG gripe is with the installer. Linksys/Cisco made a huge effort to make it idiot-proof, with a really nifty wizard to make installation a breeze. Cisco's effort FAILED, bigtime!!! Omigosh, was the installer impossible to use. It forced security on me when I didn't want it: during the initial install you can turn WPA/WEP off, but later on when you say you want to change it, WPA and WEP were my only choices! I wanted to lock down the router using MAC addresses... but couldn't do it from the wizard. I *can* do it from the web interface of the router, but Linksys/Cisco doesn't make it easy to figure out the right username and password (the username is the empty string... in other words, there is none!). Also, the wizard keeps autodetecting devices on my network - or ones that were trying to connect to my network, I'm not sure - that I had no idea what they were, nor do I have any idea how to get rid of them from the display! (They're not connected now, since I succeeded in locking the router down.)
All in all, once you get it configured, it appears to be a great piece of equipment. But getting it configured SUCKS!

Far short of expectations, December 22, 2007

I was looking to replace a old D-Link 524 (a few years old, single antenna). The Linksys is a very attractive unit, but it ends there. There was no improvement in signal range and the router setting pages load slower than my old router. Overall a very disappointing unit.

Easy to use, Excellent wireless connection strength, December 18, 2007

Have had this product for over am month now. It actually delivers to its specifications. Signal strength is excellent throughout the house even in the basement. Torrents downloads fly once port is opened, much faster than the WRT54G. not very Vonage friendly though, poor call connection quality. but i guess thats more because vonage sucks with compatibility. Great for LAN gaming, small scale off course
