I am 15 years old and i live in a house with 3 other computers. My father and mother don't know very much about them so i do most of the work. Anyway, we got the router hooked up and going and it seemed to work good. We have TimeWarner internet. I purchased the PCI card for the computer and it had a very weak signal. We got another computer and i got the USB one, and it DID work good but bad connection....but ah!It comes with an extension cable which i like. So the router works for about 4 months and then i keep either losing the connection or something else. Now just about every day I am fixing or reinstalling this router. I don't mean to ber a bad sport, but i would strongly advise you NOT to buy a Linksys router

first the wireless connection broke down every day or so. after reading the manual i changed the frequency. that helped for a short while. but now the entire thing breaks down every 5 minutes. even the conventional router (non-wireless) does not work anymore. now i will have to deal with the company to get a new one... very frustrating and not recommended.

So my first router finally dies on me three years later. All in all a good router with a steep learning curve. Though, as I understand it, wireless technology in general is difficult to work with without prior experience. I was just about to buy another one, so I decided to leave a review.

It's only router and could not work as DSL modem, so you need to have a DSL modem in place and you will use this Router as an access point to Share connection
Freidnly interface and righ admin tools

I purchased this unit as a replacement for a hard wired router, since my new work laptop had wireless G, and my wife's new laptop also had wireless G. The unit performed well for almost one year, the I started losing the wireless signal when the portable computers were moved only a few ft away. After spending over 24 hours of time (over a 3 day period) with the technical and customer service they sent me another refurbished unit. This unit did not even work - no wireless signal generated!. Another unit was shipped (another 3 days lost) and this one finally worked! A total of over 1 week of work time lost because of this! Lynksys uses tech service personnel based in India - both men and women. The quality of knowlwedge possesed by men tech personnel was far superior to the ladies I had to deal with ! Incidentally since I had just gone over the one year warranty limit, I had to pay shipping charges for the last unit.

I just got a new Linksys WRT54G wireless router and the outraging fact I just discovered is that several versions ago Cisco/Linksys crippled this device by downsizing its Flash and RAM memory to one half of the original amounts and redesigned its hardware and firmware, so this is actually an entirely different device, and that's why you will see so many different user ratings. The older versions of this wireless router are amazing and extremely flexible pieces of hardware.
If the original version of the router was so good that it was competing with their far more expensive wireless routers, they should have discontinued this model and started a new version. Instead, they decided to fool us by cutting the size of Flash and RAM memory and entirely redesigning the inside of this model and moreover, they started a new more expensive version from the original (WRT54GL). Shame on Cisco management - they should be sent back to Ethics 101.

The reason i gave it 3 stars is because it took me a while to configure it (a couple of days). The software did't work, every time i ran the cd the installation aborted with a language pack error. I have dsl and I tried to configure it using PPPoE as the software and documentation suggested but it failed all the time. Finally I went to the support page online and i found some instructions to configure it, the instructions are not in the manual (at least i didn't find them) and it worked excellent. Basically i had to use automatic config - dhcp and change the default ip to 192.168.2.1, after that it's being great, the range is pretty good and i can't complain anymore.

I don't know why I keep buying Linksys products. I guess it is because I have misplaced faith in Cisco because their commercial products work so well for me at work. But, this is the third Linksys home wireless router I have bought over the last three years, and ALL of them have taken returning them, until I get one that is actually made correctly, and I spend hours tweaking them and becoming "friends" with the technical people at Linksys--most of whom are not the "brightest pennies in the roll". In fairness to them, they are not properly trained nor do they have the tools to solve problems. They are left with the "try this" approach until they hit something that works.
I strongly suggest that you buy this product locally, if you buy it. This makes the return process easier, and I have received some pretty good advice from the local store.
If you need a wireless router that works every time and your are not constantly unplugging it to reset it, spend more money and get one that works. Life is too short for the angst that goes with Linksys routers.

I browsed the other reviewers both before ordering and after receiving, and appreciated many of the hints. In my case, my work laptop, running WinXP/Pro, had no trouble - plug and play. My home computer, working just previously on an old 3com wireless router, couldn't seem to figure it out. The router utility could ping external sites; the pc could ping the router; but the pc couldn't ping external sites. The answer, I found, was that the pc's network setup had the router's ip as 192.168.2.1, and the router apparently comes configured at 192.168.1.1. Instructions on the Linksys website hinted at this - in an article on setting up the modem it mentioned changing the ip address of the router - so I checked the pc's network settings and found the problem. Editing that gateway entry, and changing to the ..1.1 ip address fixed the problem. To check and see if you have the same problem, open network connections, rt-click properties of the router, scroll down to ip properties, advanced, and see if the gateway is ..2.1 or ..1.1. You can ping ..2.1 and/or ..1.1 from a command prompt on the pc and see what it thinks. If these instructions are confusing I apologize. WinXP/Pro shows DCHP enabled, and no gateway, so it's apparently smart enough to figure it out. Router is now working fine on both. Cheers all.

i have had this router long enough to know that it has problems with overheating. they can be solved by mounting (or simply placing) an 80mm computer case fan to the top of it, but thats not the end of this thing's problems. they were trying to save money making the more recent (V5+) routers of this model and it has been stripped to a minimal amount of RAM and Flash Space, making it unsuitable for aftermarket modification. i'm gonna bite the bullet here soon and get a WRT54GL, which is the same a the V4 version in most respects.

Simple and quick to setup and get working. It works right out of the box if you don't mind sharing your wireless. And it's easy to secure your wireless if you're not into the whole open net thing.

Had problems with Windows Vista, April 23, 2007

I had trouble making this work with windows vista. This worked perfectly with a windows xp laptop.For windows vista the connection was on for a few minutes and die and come back later. Really a frustrating experience as linksys says that this router is compatible with vista.Finally doing the following fixed the issue with windows vista
1.Go to 192.168.1.1 through your IE Browser
2.Under Wireless->basic wireless setting-> change wireless channel from default 6 to 11
3.Under Advanced wireless setting
change beacon interval to 50
fragmentation threshold to 2304
RTS threshold to 2304
After this change the wireless is working fine for vista.
Wish the linksys documentation had mentioned these small tweaks in their installation guide for specifically windows vista. Would have saved me a lot of time instead of pouring over heaps of internet articles to get this right. The product is great otherwise.

This was my first time setting up a wireless network. I used the provided cd for setup, and just followed the instructions. Setup was simple and I then went to the Linksys website to get info on security settings; their website has tutorials that take you step by step. I have had no problems with dropped connection, and I am able to use my computer anywhere in my house. I have subsequently set up a wireless printer, which was a breeze. One other note - router is compatible with Windows Vista.

Great At First, Slow Deterioration of Reliability, April 17, 2007

The first year or so, the router worked just fine for wired and wireless connections. I was pleased with the port forwarding features for my home network-based web server/email server. Over the last year or so, I've had to physically reset the router (remove power, wait 15 seconds or so, repower) with increasing frequency. At first it was once a week. Now I'm up to a couple of times a day. I've blown the thing clean and try to keep it reasonably cool, but I'm thinking there are some component/design issues with this router after reading similar complaints. The bottom line is that I can't trust this router any longer and - after reading other reviews - feel like I'd better shuffle on.
I'll be looking elsewhere for my next router.

PPTP windows vpn client doesn't work (buggy firmware), April 12, 2007

The firmware in this router doesn't work. Linksys support doesn't understand it. After struggling with India support I had to download and burn from the web dd-wrt: an open source firmware for this router and i finally got it to work.
They are incompetent and rude I will never buy anything from linksys. One of the tech supports who obviously doesn't understand nothing about networking even told me that having my pc under the DMZ only some ports are open. And that I still needed port forwarding/triggering to get VPN to work! Not to mention the falsely advertised VPN pass through capability...
Don't waste your money in this piece of junk.
