another total failure of VxWorks, September 5, 2006
By Oleg Kokorin
it's extremely unrecommended to order these units (wrt54g version 5), very bad firmware quality inside, no options to upgrade firmware (don't expect any new version soon), no chances to get bugs fixed.
device is very limited in memory, so no new features or functionality in the future planned.
frequently signal loses, bad compatibility with new MacBooks, frequent failure on routing requests and bugs in user interface (well known port forwarding bug still not fixed).
it's another great failure of well known proprietary solution called VxWorks

stay on open software, where lot's of enthusiasts reverifying ugly pices of code written by "very busy" people.
order wrt54gl instead ('L' means, it's running on linux, and could be easily upgraded to more stable open firmware in replacement of original default junk stored inside).

This really is a breeze ONCE YOU FIND THE INSTRUCTIONS. I tried the CD setup and had some difficulty. After a fairly ridiculous conversation with tech support, he recommended that I download a setup program from their website. That was all it took - apparently they didn't have this ready when they released the product, but if you call tech support, the outgoing message tells you where to go to download it. It configures the router for your host machine, then has you download a configuration program for your clients. Voila! Speeed is very good and connection has been reliable.

    i dont like it, August 31, 2006
By Ed Dibble (Ukiah, CA USA)
This looks nifty and has lots of blinking lights, but is technically poor and poorer. It basically HIJACKS your 1394 connection and shuts down DNS. Its possible that so many multiple connections, ie wireless devices, other computers, and game systems confused it. Also i started getting strange IPs on my DHCP table, leading me to believe someone was hacking my network wirelessly. A sad trend indeed>

In love with Linksys products..!!, August 31, 2006
By Nikes (USA)
This is the first time I am writing a review for a product...In fact I used to think, it was a waste of time to write reviews for products. But lately I realized the usefulness of a good review and my Linksys router has tempted me to speak a few words of appreciation for its amazing power and quality. Before using Linksys I had used other wireless routers. I am ,however,in love with this Linksys router.!!! In the initial setup process I had to spend some 3 to 4 minutes. That's it!! Since then I don't know where my Linksys router is located in the house, but I feel its presence, even if I am sitting in my outside deck hooked to internet!!

    No Clutter, August 31, 2006
By Oren Anderson (DP,CA 92629)
Great, now I don't need a 25 foot COX cable to hook up my internet. Best of all eveything is now in a network, desktop, printer, laptop. Easy set up as long as you read directions. Mine was a little tricky because my laptop is old and is a Windows 98SE system, so had to make a setup disk, but not a problem. I bought Linksey WUSB11(desktop), WRT54G(Modem), WPC11(laptop).

    Reliable Service, August 30, 2006

The setup was difficult with my Westell 6100 modem from Verizon at first but when I set it up everything works weel. Also is works well with the quite a large distance, the other computer picks it up well even witgh the door closed and both computers using the internet at the same time.

Simply the greatest router ever., August 30, 2006
By H. Heoh (Flushing, NY)
Okay so maybe I've only used Linksys products, but there's a reason for that. Linksys makes the best internet and communications devices including this one. Installation and setup were Very easy. No mess and no confusion. It's even easier if you call their 24/7 phone number, which provides very patient and helpful advice. Bottom line? Get this router. Forget DLink, Netgear, and all of the other brands. It's worth the money. Oh and performance wise, it's very reliable and the speed is fantastic. That's why I'm taking this router with me to college next week. BUY IT!

Falls down under high load, heavy hack traffic, and interference, August 30, 2006
By Kriston Rehberg (Fairfax, VA USA)
I have owned and installed this wireless router and have found it unsuitable for noisy and busy cable modem environments. This device is suitable in calm DSL environments and if you don't use a cable modem in a large city with lots of neighboring cordless phones, 2.4 GHz baby monitors, and other wireless networks. The router (wired and wireless) just cannot handle the simultaneous use of two computers on a wired network, a couple of laptops in a noisy wireless environment, and the automated hacker attempts coming in from the cable modem.

Because this item is no longer easily "flashed" to use alternative software I can no longer recommend it. If you need a router I highly recommend you investigate the Belkin Wireless-G router series which work perfectly in all the above mentioned environments and have more features than this very expensive Linksys unit.

decent performance for the price, August 27, 2006
By orvals (San Juan, PR USA)
I just got this router to replace my old D-Link wireless B that expired suddenly. For the price, I upgraded to the g standard, much better coverage in my house compared to the old D-Link. Did have an issue with the installation CD. It would hang at 99% install on my desktop PC running XP Pro, the install program never finished, however, the router works very well. Lots of option that I don't use, but are good to have.
Good router for your average user.

0 stars - This POC is worthless, unless you want a paperweight., August 26, 2006
By B. Mueller (Kirksville, MO United States)
I got the v6, unlucky for me. This piece of junk is exactly that.

Start by throwing the idiotic CD that comes with it out the Window. Of course when you start having problems, you'll think it'll help, but it won't.

This product will NOT do the following:
Hold a connection with the settings of
1) not broadcasting ssid
2) wpa or wpa2 encryption
3) MAC filtering on wifi
4) connected to an uptodate Macbook via correct settings
5) all this with the last two firmware updates.

The macbook, despite having all the correct settings, will not connect at first, but only on the second try.

Then, you have about 5 mins til your net connection dies (permanently).

I have many years computer, networking knowledge, have used many wired and wireless routers. I bought it based on the supposed name it built with wrt linux based firmware.

AVOID THIS POS like the PLAGUE. Please contact your state attorney general, and let them know they should start a class-action lawsuit against Linksys. They continually sell a non-working product, and fail to support it.

Testament to the worst in wireless technology, August 25, 2006
By M. Axelson (Central MA, USA)
This product offends me. The instability of this model is shocking. CIsco let this thing out into the market? Multiple random signal drops are a daily occurrence. The support people at Linksys (Cisco, whatever) barrage the user with already easily accessible information, and then decide it might be alright to do a same model replacement. Bottom line, the model is horrific. Speedy when working, but, like Nomar Garciaparra, what good is a brilliant player if said player only functions half the time? I have done in depth troubleshooting and narrowed the issue to the router itself. The firmware just freaks out from time to time. NEVER have I had a wireless router perform SO poorly.
Recommendation: skip this garbage item and go for the Linux based version (WRT54GL) which is a pretty damned good bit of equipment. If you'll excuse me, I need to go follow my own advice.
Cisco, you oughta be ashamed.

Good Wireless Solution, August 25, 2006
By R. Samplawski (Brooklyn, NY)
I recently bought this to set up a wireless network in my house, because I did not want to run ethernet cables through the halls and up stairs. I bought this router along with the Linksys WUSB54G Wireless-G USB Adapter. The wireless connection, when in good or excellent status, allows me to download and surf the web at the same speeds as the computer that I have connected through cables. The thing that prevented me from giving this 5 stars, is that the signal fluctutates.. somedays its very good - excellent, others its very low-low. And nothing is being changed or done on my end. It appears that this is caused by some sort of interference. The overall setup was also easy and straightforward. Setting up the security, however, was a bit more complicated, with different acronyms and security choices without any real guide to picking a security. It's not perfect, but I've used other wireless routers, and this one works really well in comparison.

Piece of junk keeps losing network connection, August 24, 2006
By holon67 (seattle, wa usa)
I dont know know the cause and there is little in the way of debug tools to find out. Waste of money. DONT BUY ONE! And now I cant even wack the firmward and do something else useful with it Linux-style. All I can do is resell or junk. Maybe it can handle a connection with 2 users on it, but not in a mid-sized corp office.

Works with Asus WL-500G Premium Running OpenWRT with WPA PSK, August 23, 2006
By Hasnain Malik (NJ, USA)
Hi,

I am very pleased when the range extender did work after some manual configuration with my Asus Router. I am getting good range in my home now. I am runing it with WPA PSK Security enabled and it gives me 54MBPS throughout the house now. Linksys Support is very good and helpful.

Tried netgear product first (Range Extender Kit) but it was useless and not reliable. This is cheaper and works perfectly. Highly Recommended.

I've had nothing but problems with this thing. At least 1 a day, more often 2-3, it goes down and I have to pull out the plug, count to 15, retry it, and repeat until I get a connection again. I called the representatives at Linksys to try and solve the problem and I got no help except, "well it does that. You'll have to reset it each time." Seriously, if I wanted that kind of hassle, I'd have stuck with dial-up and not bothered trying to go wireless.
