Setup for this unit is NOT for the casual user, had some problems getting connected, but after reading some of the reviews I got the unit on line.

Excellent router, May 27, 2007
By L Dog (Tuscaloosa, AL)
Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBoosterRouter works well. Replaced a D-link that I always had problems with and was convinced it was a poor cable connection. The new router confirmed my troubleshooting and it was only the router. We have two PC's and a laptop connected and so far it has worked flawlessly. Would highly recommend this one over any other brand.

Excellent product for the price, May 26, 2007
By yorkshire bloke (Indiana USA)
I installed the WRT54GS on my network - 2 PC's, Laptop and a network hard drive. Setup was easy although I had to work at the Toshiba MS Vista wireless connection.
The only problem I have had is that the unit locks-up occasionally requiring a reset.

super easy set up, May 22, 2007
By Heidi (The Heartland, USA)
After not being able to set up my Netgear router after a move, I bought this router. It was so easy to set up, it practically set up itself. It has excellent range as well.

Did what I wanted it to., May 14, 2007
By Tony (USA)
I needed something (not-N) that was relatively cheap, worked "out of the box" (with the Wizard, of course) and had excellent range. I needed to test it by connecting it with a Linksys wired router through a hub and the instructions on the Linksys web site were on point. No problems after two weeks, and it reaches from the basement to the opposite corner of the second floor.

Good Product, May 8, 2007
By Warlock_Lord (Millbrae, California)
I had some setup problems with this router, because I needed the firmware update which I hadn't downloaded before I tried to set up the network. I installed the firmware upgrade and instantly the problems disappeared and the router setup was complete. Also, it doesn't seem to work at all with the Netgear "B" cards I have on some of my computers, so I will have to update the cards. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just expensive.
Technical support has been fair. I called during the initial installation and worked with a technician until he realized I needed the firmware update. Once I downloaded the update, I called back to get a technician to walk through the installation with me and no one was available. They said they would call back and never did. I got tired of waiting and installed it myself. Fortunately, didn't have any troubles.
Ultimately, I am pleased with this purchase, although I'm disappointed that it doesn't seem to work with my existing network equipment.

Worst Router Ever, May 6, 2007
By Free Range Metal Head (Los Angeles, CA)
This router has given me nothing but trouble. It worked fine for about 2 months but then all of a sudden the connection drops for all wired computers and for any wireless devices it shows that there is limited to no connection available. The only way to solve this is to power cycle the unit. After doing so the connection stays for about a day or so maximum and the same problem happens again.
I spoke to Linksys tech support and they solved my problem by updating the firmware. The bad thing is that 2 days later the piece of crap started doing the same thing again.
I also know several people that have had similar problems with this same exact model. Please do not purchase this product and go with a reliable company like d-link or netgear. I had a netgear router before this and it worked flawlessly. I had to "upgrade" to a wireless router because I bought a laptop, nintendo Wii, and a nintendo DS that requires wireless connection and Linksys routers are extremely unreliable.

Linksys wireless router- so simple even a caveman can do it, May 6, 2007
By Sharp (LA/Atlanta)
This thing was so easy to hook up and get running. Almost as easy as point & click. I previously had a NetGear router and could never get it working with all of the laptops. This thing was so easy, despite a couple of reviewers that had problems with it. I am FAR from being a computer-techie, but I got it up and running with zero problems!

by 'b' router works better, May 1, 2007
By Anonomous
I replaced a linksys b router with this. This one stinks - always bouncing the signal - my old 'b' router works better than this - at least it keeps the signal connected and it works. Dont buy it......

Great Wireless Router., April 21, 2007
By Just a regular husband and father (Sacramento, CA)
I ordered this on Wednesday and with the free two day shipping actually got it on the next day believe it or not. I was a little hesitant because of some other comments about it being difficult to install. I know my way around computers but am not a tech geek by any means. I put in the disc, followed the directions and had it up and running in about 15 minutes. I went down and plugged in the Xbox360 wireless adapter (Same purchase) and it found it and was set up within 2 minutes. I was on Xbox Live in 20 to 30 minutes tops. So far so great.
I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because the reception isn't great and I am purchasing a Range Extender today to cover it. Granted the Xbox is downstairs on the otherside of the house but it's just a town home. I was hoping for a little better. But I think with the extender I should be good to go.
I would highly recommend.

Worst piece of crud I ever purchased., April 21, 2007
By Vanessa (Upstate New York)
The first thing you must learn about Linksys is that there are several versions of the same router out. Currently they are up to version 7. Versions 1 and 2 were the best, and since then Linksys has tried to cut costs by reducing product quality. I purchased a version 7 WRT54GS router because I believed it was going to be as good as the Version 2, which I had previously owned. Version 2 used Linux as the basic OS, which is far better than the customized OS they have on there now.
Was I ever wrong about this thing living up to its predecessor's image.
I have owned this device for three days. It works sporatically at best, and the wireless frequently and regularly goes down for no apparent reason. We added another computer today and for some reason the router changed the network name and reset all securities, which booted the default computer off the network and made it a nightmare to fix. After five hours of colorful language, renewing IP addresses, plugging/unplugging power and network cables, I am at wits end. Now I am back on the network, but it still refuses to connect wirelessly to the internet.
Linksys brags that it has 'won awards' for its customer service and tech support. I spent TWO HOURS on the phone trying to get to an operator and never did. Their online trouble shooting forum is filled with issues that were never addressed by the staff, but by other people unfortunate enough to have been conned into buying this product.
The router works just fine with a wire, but that sort of defeats the purpose of a WIRELESS router.
The software also caused Windows XP to crash 30 seconds after startup if it is selected to start with Windows. You should also take a look at your Run>MsConfig>Startup settings to see all the bloatware the software adds. It's a nightmare. I had to use Spybot.exe to determine which files were crucial for the router's operations and which could be unchecked from the list.
Stay away from this product. A cell phone wrapped in network cable works better as a wireless router than this thing.
UPDATE: I replaced this router with a Netgear Rangemax WPN824 v.2 router. No bells or whistles, quick and easy setup, and NO BLOATWARE! It actually works, unlike Linksys. The only thing going for Linksys is that the external antennas do give it extra range (I was getting a Very Good signal vs. a Low), but having a cost-effective router that works and works well is all that I wanted.

do you feel lucky?, April 20, 2007
By Gormenghast (Boston, MA)
I got the WRT54GS to replace the earlier WRT54G model after it suddenly died at a modestly respectable age. After wasting two days trying to get it configured so that it would work with two laptops and two desktops, with security enabled, I gave up and switched brands to the D-Link DI-634M. At various times I got the Linksys working with each of the computers, but then when I would get another one set up, the previous one might become unreliable. The last straw was when my newest laptop would connect to the WRT54GS router and then lose its connection and reconnect repeatedly, at some regular interval between five and ten seconds, like clockwork. If you're lucky, it is conceivable that this unreliable box could work for you, but I've had much better luck (and good speed and coverage) after switching to the D-Link.

Great Product, April 7, 2007
By Cheryl Robtoy
My 13 year old grandson set this product up in less than an hour. Piece of cake. Maintains constant speed of 54.0 Mbps. Only thing wrong is that there is not a customer support agent in all of Linksys that can speak English.

Can't get it to completely work, April 6, 2007
By Chris Morgan (Dallas, TX)
This may be a good product, I don't know. I can't get it to work with my DSL modem which my ISP just sent me. They won't help with the router and the router doesn't document what to do with the modem. So I'm back to my old Linksys router.
