Fantastic product! USB,Linux-compatible,with MMCX connector, March 30, 2002
By Jacek Pliszka (Riverside, CA USA)
This review is about version 2.5. Version 2.6 sold now... stinks. Version 2.5 is a fantastic product: 1. It works great with Linux as it is true Prism2 device (v2.6 does not as it is ATMEL AT76C503A device) 2. It is USB - you can extend the cable up to 25m! 3. You can disassemble it (voiding warranty of course) and inside you find popular (used in cisco) MMCX connector for external antenna!(this is also not true for v2.6 which has antenna soldered directly to the board) The only small problem is range but for [price] v2.5 it's a great deal anyway.

USB wireless adapter., March 26, 2002
By unknown
A piece of cake to set up and use. First install drivers, reboot and then plug in adapter. Windows "finds" usb adapter, installs drivers, case closed. Make certain you get version 2.5 with the small antenna that stands up. Earlier version should be all gone by now but... Excellent product.

Works but watch where you put it, March 25, 2002

Careful to put the adaptor at a high place like on top of your desk hutch. Do the same for the wireless access point. It makes a much better signal.

Linksys WUSB11 Wireless USB, March 24, 2002
By Jason S Thurston (Boise, ID United States)
I was a little skeptical going into this purchase because all of my systems run XP and I've read negative reviews about this Network Adapter running under XP. I followed the manufactures recommendation and DID NOT use the driver that shipped with the product, opting instead to let XP automatically detect it. After fine tuning the encryption settings the card has ran flawlessy for about 4 weeks now. My access point is about 45 feet away and I'm still getting 100% signal strength. One thing to note though is that with encryption tuned up to 64 bits, my actual through put is around 3.5mb/sec. Plenty for surfing the net and occasional file access.

Very often, the connection is lost., March 23, 2002
By ronnie park (La Canada, California United States)
The installation was fairly simple, after being gone through the experience of the installation (and trouble shooting) of the main router(befw11s4). However, my remote PC was only about 20 feet and a drywall away from the main router, the connection has been very unstable. The wireness communication between the remote PC and the main router only works, in average, one out of five times.I heard that the newer version (ver. 2.5) works better. I am going to replace mine with the new version (specially with the newly-attached antena) and see if it improves the wireless network performance. I do not recommend the older version that does not come with the attached antena.

If only "Zero Stars" was an option, March 18, 2002
By Keith Krebs (NYC Metropolitan Area)
LinkSys's Quality Control has gone to hell in both firmware and hardware. Customer support is abysmal at bestEven LinkSys tech support encourages users to strongly consider using the 2.5 Version of this Hardware (which has an external antenna). The XP driver is highly problematic. Suffice it to say, I will NOT recommend another LinkSys product to clients, colleagues, or friends... Bill Machrone of PC Magazine and ExtremeTech.com has also written about some problems with LinkSys products ...A LinkSys tech support person actually told me that articles and reviews by users will make no difference, because they keep getting editorial awards from publications. I assume they won't mind this review then.. Keith

Exellent, March 7, 2002
By ET (Matthews, NC USA)
Works flawlessly. I had a minor challenge to overcome in my set-up (see below), but once I figured it out, everything works superbly. A very nice feature is the ability of the WUSB11 to search for all broadcasting stations in its area. Here's my set-up and my lesson learned, using 2 WUSB11 and a BEFW11S4 Linksys Cable/ DSL Router w/4-Port Switch. I have a cable modem and my main computer (a Dell laptop with Windows 2000 Professional) hooks to the router via hardwired ethernet. That part was up and running in minutes, just using the defaults. Web-page set-up is very practical. My 2 other computers (both less than 20ft away in 2 bedrooms above the office where the router sits) are desktops with Windows 98 SE and were successfully connected using the WUSB11 wireless network adapter. The only problem I encountered there in the set-up was due to the fact that these computer also had a NIC network card in them (unused) and during set-up it defaulted to imposing a static IP address. Linksys tech. support didn't figure the problem out, although I was lucky to be connected to them only within 15 minutes and the trouble-shooter was fairly knowledgeable. I found the problem myself the next day after a good night sleep. Not a typical problem and was readily resolved. If you have the same issue, make sure you check the settings for TCP/IP of your interface card to ensure that it has the settings you want (in my case it had to be "obtain IP automatically"). Even though it's not part of the network I use (since I use the USB adaptor), it seems to cause conflicts if not set-up properly. I can't complain about the wireless range, but my needs are very modest since all three systems are less than 20ft from one another. I routinely get the 11 Mbps with 100% quality and between 80% and 100% signal strength.

value for money, March 1, 2002
By swampstomper (Enschede, OV Netherlands)
Cheap, works perfectly... what more do you want? It can't do miracles (i.e. send radio signals through lead) but in a typical wood frame house like mine it almost always keeps the signal fast and clear over about 15m.

very unstable, February 5, 2002
By unknown
I suggest that if you can, buy a pc or pci card. This usb adapter is very unstable. I have to restart my windows xp computer atleast twice a day. The only advantage to this is that you can put it in the spot with the best signal, whereas in a pc or pci card it is stuck inside your computer and you cant move it very easily.

XP? No Way! Phone Support? Nope! Waste of Time, February 5, 2002
By david23010 (Elmhurst, IL USA)
I'm not a novice when it comes to computers, so I was relieved to see that others had the same problems. Despite Linksys claims to the contrary - the XP drivers they supply do not work (at least not for me or the others on this review page). What was very disappointing was the documentation for the product (the troubleshooting section has words in it - however the words are not related to troubleshooting). Also phone support was terrible. I waited over 1/2 hour two nights in a row before giving up. Don't waste your time or money.

DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS XP!, February 1, 2002
By skylove (Milpitas, CA USA)
I bought the WUSB11 six months ago for my windows ME computer. It worked fine on that, but when I decided to upgrade to Windows XP, I encountered huge amounts of problems, not yet resolved. I downloaded Linksys' so called "Win Xp" driver for the adapter, but it did not help one bit. I called the technical support and they gave up after an hour. If you are using this adapter with windows XP, DO NOT GET IT, if you are not, the WUSB11 works fine.

I'd rate it lower if I could, January 28, 2002
By Dan Ogden (Jersey City, NJ USA)
Simply put, the Linksys group hasn't really updated their Windows XP drivers as far as I can tell--I've tried to install the driver every which way, have the wireless router/access point up and running but have to use good old cables to connect. Unless I "nag" the one person who's sent me email from tech support, nothing happens (and even after I get a response, it has referenced for the past 2 weeks a mythical level 2 support group, whose contact I'm still waiting for). I have 2 separate, uniquely configured XP machines that both have a useless piece of technology connected to them (the Linksys adapter), so I don't suspect this is an isolated incident.
Unfortunately, there is no "zero" rating--which is what I would suspect anyone who purchases a theoretically XP-compatible, allegedly plug-n-play device would rank it if it couldn't be made to work. In fairness, if the thing worked at all, it would get at least 3 from me; the ridiculous wait times on tech support, and one particular techie's bad attitude and misinformation have made it a stupefyingly bad experience to own this product.
I will never knowingly buy a Linksys product again, and if the level 2 guys can't fix my problem, I will call every single executive in the company until I am issued a refund.

I can't get it to work to save my life..., January 24, 2002
By Erik D Nicotra (NC, USA)
I would have giving it no stars if all possible. I spent my money with the hopes that it would make my life easier, no. I can't get it to install at all. i tried installing it a computer with windows xp, got the new drivers and all. Nope. I tried it on a computer with windows millenium, nope. easy install is a joke. I tried to install it ever way i could think of, I tried forcing the drivers and all, but on both systems it just comes up as an unknown usb device and won't even install period, much less me having any comment on speed or reliability.... get something else from linksys or maybe another company all together.

If it works, it works great, January 3, 2002
By lq (United States)
I set up a network of 4 pcs with the Linksys router. Of the three of these cards I've tried, only one works. The one that works, works great and couldn't have been simpler to install. I returned the defective one and got another defective one in replacement. I called Linksys tech support - tech said I just had bad luck in getting two bad cards - maybe I got an older version of the same model number....not a great response.

Just like in the Movies, December 31, 2001
By R. Goltsch (West Caldwell, NJ USA)
Ever see a movie where everything works just like it should? No rebooting when the hero tried to go online with the alien motherships's mainframe? Just connected right away.... Well, here's a device that works just like that. I received this Wireless adapter, along with a Linksys BEFW11S4 Router (See my review and setup for that item) for Christmas. While I may have some issues setting up the router, this Wireless adapter worked right out of the box. I installed the software, plugged it into my daughter's computer in the kitchen and, Boom, it found the wireless router upstairs in my office. I set up Internet Explorer to use the LAN and she was up and surfing in no time. She is getting about 5mbps in the kitchen when connected to the router upstairs and across the house. I've got to say this was a great gift, and easy to set up.

Everything's ok, but the range is very poor, December 13, 2001
By unknown
I used this in a home setup between 2 PCs, in conjunction with the etherfast wireless access point BEFW11S4 and the above mentioned network adapter. The range was much worse than I expected. If there is a standard brick wall blocking both appliances, the signal strength could fall by almost a quarter to a half! If that is the case, I don't know how the signal could pass through one floor.

Quick, Easy, Works..., December 3, 2001
By Eli Mor (Marlborough, MA USA)
I Bought this item along with Linksys wireless router/switch and after an hour (of which 50 minutes were consumed because of my manly behaviour of insisting not to read the manual), I had both computers traveling in a lightning speed (well, I maybe over excited here, but it was very fast none the less). One thing to add, it seems that having a computer with Windows XP as an OS connected to electricity is just enough to surf the net.

Unresolved problems with Win98, December 2, 2001
By Andrew Dowd (Boston, MA)
This unit is so good in so many ways, I really wanted to give it a positive review. In general, I have been very satisfied with other Linksys products. Unfortunately, the driver refuses to load properly after a reboot (a frequent occurance on Win98). The only fix I found was to unplug and then plug-in the USB cable after every reboot or stand-by. I very tedious process! Tech support simply told be to repeatedly re-install the software, which never worked. Naturally, by the time I finally concluded there was no way to fix the problem, It was past the point where I could simply return it. However, once the driver is running, It seems to work fine.

Wonderful, November 15, 2001
By mikemcglynn (Garland, TX)
After issues with installing the firmware and latest drivers on the Lynksys WAP11 Access Point, this USB Adapter worked flawlessly. I can access my home-based LAN as well as the Internet from anywhere on my property with great speed.Tip. Make sure you are running Windows XP Professional on the machine hosting the Access Point and that you download the latest drivers from Lynksys. XP Pro's simple wizard based ICS (Internet Connection Service) eliminates the need for a the router and a separate Proxy. I checked its built in Firewall for Stealth and it passes with flying colors. I have two computers running Win98 on these adapters. Great fun. Small criticism... I wish there was an activity light on the Adapter. There is a power LED and a link LED but neither provide any sense of activity.
