| Description: |
| Want to network your home or small office? Torn between the flexibility of wireless access and the speed of wired connections? Look no further. Motorola's Wireless Broadband Router, the WR850G, is built with both an 802.11g wireless access point and a 4-port Ethernet router. It's wireless. It's wired. It's the foundation of a truly customized network and it's full of options.Connected users can share files, pictures, peripherals, printers and more with everyone else on the network. Even better, by connecting a broadband modem (cable, DSL or other), they can also share a single high speed Internet connection. That's everyone online, all surfing different sites, all at the same time. |

Great Wireless router. Needs better encryption setup though., March 14, 2007
By Living in an Electric State (Latrobe, PA)
Great wireless / wired router. This thing has very good range, signal strength all over house. The construction is high quality.
The web setup program needs some validation though. You can save invalid length WEP keys to the thing & then you have to login via a cable to fix it... This makes it anoying for experienced users, and impossible for new users to setup a secure connection.
Also, some of the newer firmwares are kinda buggy with bittorrent p2p transfers. Not all of them though.
The DMZ feature is nice for my gaming pc.
I like it better than the cheapo netgear ones & given the marginal price increase for this one over a netgear, I'd buy it anyday.

Motorola Wireless Broadband Router is good, January 9, 2007

Motorola Wireless Broadband Router is good. Inexpensive. Easy to install. Instructions are clear. Just works. Is apparently secure (how does on ever know?). Recommended.

Easy to set up.... but problems over time., November 22, 2006
By Joel Thomas (Dallas, TX USA)
The wr850g router seemed like it was a good buy at first. Was easy to set up and had a lot of options for encryption with a nice user interface when changing firmware settings.
However, over time this piece of equipment has proven itself to be highly unreliable. It freezes up a couple of times each day, overnight, and is even more unstable when there are no hard ethernet links to it (in the DSL port, or the 4 ethernet jacks). Over the course of three years it has shown all the symptoms of having electrostatic discharge (ESD) erosion, getting steadily worse until the point where it will freeze up within minutes of resetting, or will not even get to the point of connecting to the wireless devices or DSL modem. The reset algorithim is itself buggy, sometimes neccessitating the manual plugging in of ethernet cables one at a time.
Overall, I would not reccomend this product to a gamer, nor to someone who does financial transactions online. A light internet user will find the experience frustrating, though workable.

easy set up, November 4, 2006
By P. Haworth
After a horrible experience with Linksys, this router works beautifully. I am not a computer geek in any shape or form but the set up for this went quickly and smoothly. No problems whatsoever.

Very easy setup and great performance, June 30, 2005
By C. Logg (USA)
I've had the router for about a month now and it has worked very well. Setup was simple and the interface is better than the other routers I've had. I'm using a Motorola WPCI810G PCI card on my PC, and a WN825G PC card adapter on my laptop. Nice strong signals, no tweaking or resets have been required.

It's running Linux kernel 2.4, June 29, 2005
By Fearless Loser (NYC)
This little router is running a 2.4 kernel. Brain, if OSX has the unzip application that's available for nearly all Unices then you should be able to unpack the "exe"; I just did it after reading your review.
Reception is very good even through walls where my defunct DI-614+ failed. I have a Linux machine with an Atheros PCI card as a router and it doesn't interfere.
(...) Withing 10 minutes of accessing the unit I receive the error message.
I have already recommended it to one person.
(...) For the moment it's working well and I'm happy.

Great router especially if you have more than one, May 3, 2005
By frankz00 (Fairfield, CT, USA)
This is a great router especially if you have more than one. This router is one of the few within its price range that supports WDS bridging. I have one connected to the cable modem and the second one is connected to my ReplayTV over a WDS bridge. What this basically means is that my wireless network is extended via wireless connection. It's a very nice feature.
The only thing I do not like about the router is that it doesn't support DHCP static address assignment. This was not enough to lower my rating for it though.

Not bad but it can be frustrating, March 9, 2005
By Alfy (Ohio)
If you don't know what you doing this router can be a nightmare. Like was mentioned by other users, this router can be very instable due to buggy firmware ver. 5.xx. The solution seems to be the 4.03 firmware version. After the firmware downgrade no problems. Good security options, good range and signal strength.

Good Product, March 2, 2005
By D. W. Woods (Texas, U. S. of A.)
I bought that router because I needed one before going offshore to work on any offshore drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. After getting offshore, it did not take much brain work to hook the router up. We are using the wired port and also the wireless. It is all working good. There is lots of steel around here, but the wireless is working good of this level of the living quarters that I have it set up on. It will not connect to any computer on the level above it or below it. A great router, I would recommend it for any home use.

not impressed, February 8, 2005
By brain
bought the router mainly for the parental controls, but despite having a background in computer and networking can't get them to work in any worthwhile way. the documentation is poor on this feature and others on the web seems to find them the same.
two other complaints. there was a security issue that came out to which motorola issued a firmware update. a number of people on the web are complaining that the latest firmware that fixes the security issue is unstable. also related to the firmware update - the release notes proceedure for updating are not accurate. the firmware updates are .exe files which the router will not take. i imagine they are self-extracting executables, which is a pain for mac users.
looking at the other reviews it seems that people are happy - but think twice if you are looking to use the parental controls at all, and find out whether they have issued a new firmware addressing the issues mentioned as well.

great router but wobbly with encryption, January 29, 2005
By Razzle (Houston, TX United States)
It's a great router and has served me well. Setting it up is a no-brainer and its web-interface for configuration is a real charm. The only problem I've had (hence the 4 stars instead of 5) is when I use encryption. I'm using 64 bit encryption with my laptop and sometimes (about twice a day) the wireless connection between my laptop and the router disappears for about 5 minutes. It should not be happening because the laptop is right next to the router all day. The other computers that I have connected via cable through the same router work just fine though. The customer support at Motorola told me that there are sometimes minor problems when using encryption.
Aside from the minor hiccup I described I can't say I have any complaints with this router. It's got a ton of features and works great. Its default settings are wonderful - I ran a security test on my home network by probing it from the outside and the results were *perfect*. Hence the default firewall within the router is definitely stellar and doing a great job.
The router was an editors pick as the best router on CNET which is why I bought it in the first place. And I can't say I have been disappointed. Good luck with your decision.

Quick and easy, December 26, 2004
By M. Smith
I own a Motorola SB5100 cable modem for my computer. I now need to share the internet with an X-box and a 2nd computer. Within minutes of opening WR850G router, my network was up and running, fantastic! Since all my connections are wired, I am able to turn off the 'wireless' access until I need it. My highest recommendations go to WR850G router a superior product.

Motorola, you did a great job again!, November 3, 2004
By Maverick
After my lengthy research and many reviews I have read, I decided to go with Motorola and I'm so happy for that! The configuration wizard makes the setup very easy, especially web-base interface. It has a full load of security feathers, which if you don't really care it, your life will be easier. But I'm kind of a guy who wants to utilize all the feathers it has, so I played around with it. It took me a little while since I don't have much knowledge of networking and try to get to understand of what feature does what. But eventually, the security setup went so well.
Range depends on the location of the unit. For my place, there is no choice I have to put it against the wall but so far reception is good even if it has to pass all 5 walls to my bedroom! This is so cool. I put it next to 5.8GHz phone and tried to jam it with Bluetooth device (2.4GHz) but it doesn't seem to have problem at all, only a noise level increase a little bit. I've been online for hours already and it is so stable. My card is Motorola's WN825G... they make great couple.

Works like a charm, October 31, 2004
By E. Davis
Did research a year ago and thought I'd get Netgear, when wife got laptop then I read reviews and got Motorola. EZ to setup, remember to reboot, and works like a charm throughout our 3 story house, even the basement, and the unit is based in our 3rd floor attic. I also went for the Motorola wireless notebook card. The Cnet ratings, rate this the top and no doubt it is.

Great router, August 21, 2004
By coachgary99 (Northern Illinois, United States)
I thoroughly investigated networking and routers before this purchase. I am glad I did, because I love this router! It was easy to install and works great. It has great range. I have it networked with a desktop on my second floor using the motorola pci adapter and the connection is great, 38 to 54 mbps. No problems so far. I had to call the motorola help line to configure my adapter card to the router and the csr was a great help. Got me going by configuring my security settings and away I was. Bonus, help line speaks english! I am very glad I went with the motorola networking products!!

Excellent Wireless Router, June 28, 2004
By pcmock (Carlsbad, CA United States)
I bought the WR850g 6 months ago. The user's manual is well written, and it is easy to set up. The security options include WPA and mac address control. It has worked flawlessly with my OSX Powerbook and WinXP laptop. The security protocol set up is a little confusing, and the manual needs more examples. You should also check Motorola's website for firmware updates.

Great Gadget at a very good price, June 13, 2004

Worth the money. Looks a whole lot better than the Linksys on my desk. Set up was easy.

Excellent router!, May 27, 2004
By scots (Raleigh, NC United States)
I replaced a Netgear WGR614 (which was a piece of junk) with this Motorola router. The Motorola ROCKS. I've had no problems at all with it, and it has better range and signal quality than the Netgear. I was walking around outside in my yard with my laptop...out to the street, and then back into the back yard. The signal was weaker outside than inside, but I never lost the signal.

Motorola WR850G, May 1, 2004
By Reviewer18 (Dade, Fl. USA)
I tried Belkin, Linksys and D-Link before a review of this router led me to purchase and try it. It is the best and easiest to set up. I was up and running in 10 minutes with a two minute call to their help line, which is open 24/7. Both my powerbook and thinkpad recognized the network immediately and I am typing this review in my kitchen which is over 60 feet from the router. Try this before you buy any other WI FI router and you will be pleasantly surprised.
