Easy to set up!, February 26, 2004
By Networker (oh United States)
I've had this router for about 9 months now. It's very easy to setup and maintain. It has a remote access feature that allows you to reconfigure the router remotely. The only drawback is that this router is not very tolerant of file sharing software. It frequently locks up despite severely limiting numbers of connections. If you intend to use file sharing software, get something else. Otherwise, this is a great router.

Do NOT buy this if you need to schedule events!, February 23, 2004
By unknown
This router's clock hardware loses about an hour a day, so if you need to use the scheduling function (like limiting your kid's internet access at night) you'll constantly have to manually update the time setting. Netgear tech support lied to me and said I'm the only one to experience this, but there are entire online forums dedicated to the problem:http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/remark,9352534~mode=flat?hilite=MR814v2 Another bug: Blocking sites by keyword doesn't work correctly. I tried blocking hotmail by schedule, and it just blocked it continually...never unblocked it until I did it manually. I even exchanged mine for a new replacement, and the replacement did the same thing. All the rest of the functions seemed to work okay.

Excellent product!, February 21, 2004
By JPAN (Saint Paul, Minnesota)
Give it a try on your home PC, etc, because, after all, it's only 30 bucks, which is a lot cheaper than other Cable/DSL Routers. If it doesn't work, I believe you can get a full refund!

Security concerns, February 17, 2004
By youth99 (Springfield, IL)
Remember, that if you live in an urban environment, a unit like this exposes you to possible identity theft. The security features need to be more user-friendly. People are just not using them and they are getting hurt.

Excellent cute router with True Firewall!, February 14, 2004
By Jared (Austin Texas)
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this router (the MR814v2) does in fact have a true firewall, with SPI and DoS protections although it was not advertised as such when I ordered it. Also, it works great under Mac OSX 10.3 and with Mac OS9. It's very compact and well designed, with a front panel that can only be described as cute. Installation was a breeze and configuration is easy with the web-based interface! Highly recommended for Macintosh users.

Good product at a great price, February 13, 2004
By rjharper (Glasgow, United Kingdom)
Having just upgraded from dial up to cable internet, we decied to network the three computers in the house. Inital setup was a breeze and we weere surfing the internet in minutes. My pc was wired but the others are running belkin wireless cards that found the router without problem. Given that we're sharing drives (I'm the only one with ZIP drive, and my roomate has a DVD drive) the encryption and mac address filtering is great, and really easy to setup. ()So its only 11Mps wireless, but my cable internets only 3Mps so there's no problem there.

Good buy for the price, February 11, 2004

The bottom line is that Netgear makes a decent product. I don't say great product because it has some shortcomings: 1) support isn't great. used to be top notch customer service and over the last couple of years it has really gone down hill. You get basic support for the first 90 days then after that you have to use the web site only or pay for phone support. To boot, the first level support just isn't sharp and is downright frustrating. 2) netgear is slacking on their compatibility testing. out of the box this did not work with my IBM Thinkpad computer (centrino based). I had to upgrade the firmware on the router before it worked properly. That said, the upside: 1) Nice, slim, compact and visually appealing design 2) The wireless signal is strong through my two story home 3) The web based router configuration is fairly simple to use (with knowledge of these devices) 4) The out of box router setup wizard seems to work well 5) Solid wireless security: disable wireless SSID broadcast, 64 and 128bit wireless encryption, MAC address filtering 6) solid router functions: firewall, DHCP server, VPN support, URL filtering, etc. etc. If you have the tolerance to deal with *potential* setup issues, this is definitely a 4 out of 5 starts product... good bang for your buck.

Easy setup, February 9, 2004
By theoriginalsubguy (Florida)
Very easy to setup. This unit has a strong signal, and operates at full speed even across the house. Don't even notice a drop in broadband speed. Only microwave oven use close to the unit will cause slow down.

Mac users steer clear, February 8, 2004
By webdog (San Francisco, CA United States)
Now I know why the price of this router keeps getting cheaper and cheaper.I bought this to replace my aging Linksys router, which was starting to require a reboot almost daily. In short, this Netgear router does not play nice with the Airport Extreme card in my Apple Powerbook. Sure I can connect to the Wi-Fi router. And sure it has great range (which was important to me). But transfer speeds of 3 kbs just don't cut it (doesn't matter how close I am to the router). Signal is nice and strong, but transfer sucks (WEP on or off). Hooking up to the router with a wired connection works just fine.. but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of wireless, doesn't it? Oh yeah, and even though it says "Mac OS compatible", it doesn't pass Appletalk traffic. So be prepared to enter the IP address of your printer and whatever net devices you need to connect to. Mac users would be wise to avoid this one.

Great for the Money, February 8, 2004
By unknown
I wanted an economic yet easy to install wi-fi system and this fit the bill. I read a number of reviews here, and read a very strong recommendation from Kiplinger mag which gave it high marks for ease of installation in a *home* office. We have it installed to the dsl modem and computer on the bottom floor of a townhouse with a MA311 on the 3rd floor. Going on 8th month and no problems yet! Because the MA311 is hooked up to CPU which is against the wall, the signal strength varies from 60+ to 80+%, but I really cannot tell that it is slowing down my internet surfing speed.I was a bit confused on the installation, even though the guide/manual did have clear, illustrated instructions. I called up installation support, and it turns out that my confusion stemmed from my thinking that installation much have been more difficult, i.e., I was already hooked up and didn't know it. Installation support is 24/7 and was quite helpful and patient. I did disable all antivirus/internet security software before installation as I had read somewhere that some complications may arise if I had these turned on. I'm looking looking forward to hooking up our laptop with the MA521.

wasn't as easy as it should be, February 2, 2004
By artboooks (San Diego, CA USA)
For some reason, I had a hard time getting my netgear router set up - it would help a lot if the troubleshooter manual came in print - the little dinky pamphlet doesn't tell enough, so I had to scroll through the voluminous pdf file and finally found a small bit o' information hidden in there that made me realize that I needed to reset the router. Only after that was I able to get the thing to work. Ironically I was able to access other wifi networks with no problem. But now that its working I would hope that it would be worth the trouble.

Great router, February 2, 2004
By starkrazed (Los Angeles, CA)
Anyone, computer geek or not, will be able to set up this router within minutes. It's very, very simple, and I didn't even need the installation CD to set it up at all. I was hesitant to go wireless because of the connections and insecurities, but was forced to try it out as it was my only option at the store I went to. I bought this router in a package that came with the adapter. I was connected and on-line in minutes, which was a great stress reliever for my old Lynksys died on me for no apparent reason and I was left without Internet for over 2 weeks. A few months later, the router is still working without any major problems. One thing I am a bit annoyed at is I always have to reset configurations to default for the connection to work properly. -_- this defeats the purpose of cable internet as you are "always" supposed to be online. but it's something I've adapted to, I think. If you're on a budget, want a quick and easy to set up router, buy this router and hopefully you won't be disappointed!(There seems to be a lot of mixed feelings about it. You could always return it if it doesn't work for you...)

Better than my Linksys or SMC Barricade routers, January 29, 2004
By engineer2001 (Atlanta, GA USA)
I love this router. I have this one at my parents' house, and it works great. I can get a very good signal anywhere in the 2000 sq. ft. house on either floor. I love the logs it keeps (which you can view through the web-based setup screen), as I can see what everyone is accessing anytime they're on the net - great for spying on relatives to see who looks at what and to keep the kiddies out of the seedy underbelly of the web with the IP blocking capabilities! It even shows which computer accessed the sites and the time of access. The only thing missing is the stateful packet inspection that I am used to with my SMC Barricade (SMC2404WBR). My Linksys BEFW11S4 (ver. 2) at my in-laws' house has similar range but junky logging, as you can't clear the log without powering off the router, and it doesn't show which computer name is associated with the web sites logged. The Barricade has much less range than the other two routers, and the Linksys is just too big/bulky. The slim profile of the Netgear MR814, superior range, excellent logging, and overall stability make it my favorite of the three routers. I like it better than my brother's D-Link DI-614+ too. I hate its junky dual list - one across the top and one down the side - of setup screens. Hard to navigate! Overall, this router is well worth the money for its features and performance (even though it only uses NAT and is missing SPI). I plan to buy another one as replacement if any of my routers break in the future.

Works ok, but Netgear never gave me my rebate, January 28, 2004
By tjh (corvallis, or United States)
The Equipment setup was fairly easy for this. The range was not as good as I had hoped. I have a compute a floor above with the wireless pci card and it barely reaches. The pci card had problems in that the encrypted key would change by itself and had to be manually entered at every bootup. Tech support was unable to fix this, but I managed a workaround by using all numbers. My guess was that the uppercase/lowercase ascii changed somehow. My only real complaint is that I never got my rebate from netgear. I sent the original barcode with the form, waited the weeks it took to get the rebate and it never came. I wrote letters, sent copies that I had made, but was told that I needed the 'original' barcode which was appearantly lost in the mail, so I was out of luck. Just be careful and stay on top of it with this company. I also purchased the wireless card for my laptop and it works great.

Great price (with the rebate) and terrific router. Works flawlessly for me and seems to have a great firewall. Highly recommended.

good machine for the price, PDA quirks, January 25, 2004
By Sonny G (Livermore, California United States)
I bought this router to network my toshiba E750 to my PC and the internet. Set up took some time due to user errors and some firmware quirks on the router. First, I had my DSL modem connected to the wrong port on the router. It can only go into one port. Second, the router assigned IP address for my toshiba pda would come up wrong, and I would have to hit IP renew several times to get it right. The pda would not connect until this was right. Lastly, most web pages did not download properly to my pda until I upgraded the router firmware to 5.03. Now it is wrorking great. Range is limited to just outside my house, but that may be my pda. Overall, with these headaches over, and some hours spent working them out, I am very happy. Please note I am an engineer and have some networking background, so I did not give up, whereas most people might have. This rewiew was written on my pda using the wireless network.

Good - but not good enough, January 23, 2004
By jamandman (Los Angeles, ca United States)
I bought this prodcut with the hopes of sitting in my dining room or living room and working from there...however, the range just did not allow for it. It was easy to set up, just like my hard wired router, but I could not believe how slow it was and how weak the signal seemed to be.I am going to try another brand, but unfortunately I believe all these wireless networking devices are going to have problems with my house, my 2.4ghz phone and my need for spped.
