One Happy Camper, December 19, 2003

We got the kids computers for Christmas, so we knew we wanted to go wireless. Rather than paying $14.95 a month to use our cable company's equipment we decided to invest in just buying the equipment outright. I was able to install the router in about 10 minutes. This included configuring the email log alerts (a must if you have teens -- even good ones:-), and blocking several sites and keywords. I did have to call Netgear support to ask a question during the set up (this is included in the 10 min. setup time), and considering that I am a night owl and this was at 3:00 in the morning, I was pleasantly surprised to get a knowledgeable (albeit overseas) support person.I would not hesitate to recommend this router. The setup was easy, tech support was instantly available, and the price for the router and 3 additional adapters was a very reasonable $142.00 after rebates.

Not worth the low price, December 18, 2003

Coming from a standard router (Netgear RT314) I thought the best way to do wi-fi was with a combo unit so I bought the MR814v2. Hooked it up using the same settings as the RT314 (on Comcast cable.) The wired ports were very sluggish, it took 1/2 to 1 second to load a page. Whereas with my RT314 they load instatntly. So I'm returning this and getting a stand-alone access point (I'll stick with my rock-sold RT314 thank you.)

easy to use, December 17, 2003

I have purchased a couple of these and have had no problems. Very easy set-up with no problems. When I have had to call support they were very helpful. A much better experience than friends have had with other brands of routers!

We received our order even before the estimated ship date. We had the wireless router up and running in about 15 minutes. Thank you for your quick response.

Only works for 2 months, December 16, 2003
By CHANG, CHAOCHI (Stony Brook, NY, USA)
I bought this wireless router 2 months ago. In the beginning, it worked fine. However, after around 2 months passed, it start to drop my laptop from wireless network every 5 to 10 minutes. After the similar situation appeared several times, you will find the wireless network indicator light doesn't flash anymore. At the time, you need to reboot this router again to make it work for a short time. Then repeat the similiar steps, every several hours. :( I give it 2 stars because I use it as an expensive hub now. :Q

Excellent product, December 14, 2003
By weekend handyman (Irvine, CA)
After I got the wiring straight by following the easy diagram, Almost as soon as I started the CD that came with the product, it was finished. At first I thought there was a problem, since the setup was actually finished in about one minute.I have it running for 2 days with excellent range (my laptop is 30 feet away with 2 concrete walls in Seoul, Korea apartment. I get a very strong signal by using SMC USB adapter. (unfortunately Netgear does not have a stylish USB adapter as the main router). Excellent and easy to setup. gychang

Do your homework on support first, then choose the hardware, December 11, 2003
By unknown
Although this has been well recommended by many authoritative reviewers, I had no success at all connecting this with an Apple G4 laptop with built in Airport. Tech support from Netgear was limited to only the most rudimentary suggestions before they required paid support to take over.DSL Provider only supports 2-Wire brand for wireless assist and Apple couldn't resolve the connection issue. So, although It works fine with the routing of wired connections, you need to be certain you can get help if wireless doesn't interface.

Mail-in Rebate from Netgear is a joke, December 8, 2003
By xzhu16 (Chicago)
I bought this router and the MA521 card in September. The router and the card worked fine. But I still have not received the promised the mail-in rebate more than 3 months later.

Great buy, December 8, 2003

I am not a techie but I found getting the wireless connection with my laptop up and running very easy but the tech support is horrible. I believe that Netgear have outsourced their support to India. The wait on both occasions that I called was close to 30 minutes.

Works like a champ!!!!, December 7, 2003
By destinpc (USA)
Installation supposed to be as easy as 123 but wasn't. Inexperience technician make it seems like hell. Anyhow, it is a great fun at last. I must confess that the signal strength amazed me. I received signal in all area in my building. My PPC WIFI works great. Overall, it is a nice and cheap piece of equipment. For the price, you can not beat this. It works for me like a champ. Almost return it because of poor tech support. At last the right tech support help me out. It is great!!!

great router... ! PPPoE only, pptp troubles, December 6, 2003
By nirfri2 (Israel, bahd 4)
This router had me pull my hairs for the first 3 weeks, it kept hanging after several hours. I tried applying the firmwares, that didn't help. Support was fine, but they instructed me to do a reset, and basic stuff like that. So I decided to change my ADSL protocol from PPTP to PPPoE, having done so my connection is working flawlessly, over 100 hours of ongoing connection. Wireless support is great, my tc1000 connections nicely, even through brick walls. (11Mbps), also using the Orinoco Gold, works nice. didn't try WEP, I have it restricted by MAC addresses. also UPnP works good with windows XP, especially when using Netmeeting.aside from the fact that its 'old' 802.11b standard, its a great product once you get to tweak it for your system. I'll recommend it to WiFi enthusiasts beginners with a very limited budget. If you got some more to spend, move on to the 802.11g where current-future resides. Roth-Net

Great product very easy to intall, December 4, 2003
By Jorge Garcia (Tegucigalpa, Fco. Morazan Honduras)
Excellent product, very good look and feel. Very easy to install just connect to the Cable Modem, turn on and voil. For the router settings I connected trough the wireless connection without problem, setup WEP and everything is working without any problem. I installed it in less than 5 minutes.

Be sure to upgrade the software, December 4, 2003
By Dan
I installed this with the MA401 card in my laptop and wired it to my desktop. The wireless connection kept cutting out every 3-5 minutes until I upgraded (for free) to the latest software. However, this upgrade would have been impossible if I had not had my desktop wired to the router (since the laptop's connection wouldn't stay long enough to transfer the files). The router's fine, but the firewall is not as configurable as SMC and Belkin products I've used. It's also the largest home gateway I've used, though standing on end it doesn't use too much room. It comes with a personal firewall which seems OK, but a bit rough around the edges. They throw in a patch cable! I love it when companies don't skimp on little things like that.

Great value!, December 3, 2003
By Oscar Feliciano (Paterson, NJ United States)
Just got my wireless router today and it was up and running in no time, as expected. My Optimum Online connection worked immediately, since it's just DHCP, and my Vonage phone service worked flawlessly. Just to comment on other reviews made on this product: 1) You *can* turn off the wireless feature. Just go into Setup, Wireless Settings, and uncheck Enable Wireless Access Point. 2) I could not get AOL for OS X working either, but it is not Netgear's fault. It is AOL's fault. Apparently their OS X client has issues connecting through any router using NAT (firewall), as I had this same problem with my old Linksys 4-port wired router. AOL had me create a new network location earlier this year, and blamed the OS. Go figure. AOL worked fine before I put in the router, and from other posts on the web, it only happens with the OS X client. Setting the Default DMZ Server to the IP of my Mac allowed AOL to connect with no problems, but this leaves my computer completely exposed to the Internet.

Easy and powerful control, November 30, 2003
By chudik (North Chelmsford, MA)
I figured since I was bloging about this purchase anyway, I'll put a copy here:It was an extremely easy setup. Within 20 minutes I had my connection set up, encrypted, SSID hidden, the MAC address of the card registered and running around checking signal strength all over the house and on the patio. It did however take me a couple of tries to figure out how to properly set up the WEP keys so I could simply swap my single wireless card from one laptop to another; it works great now. It's a wonderfully easy user interface with a host of features. You have tremendous control over the IP addresses, logs and access. For example, if you had a kid with a computer in their room and didn't want them to be online after midnight, you could set the router to block that particular connection from 12 - 5 AM. You can even block specific ports, not just IPs. Or you could block sites by domain or keyword. Also, there is an access log with ability to automatically send it out via e-mail when it is full or at predefined time intervals. But the greatest advantage that I found over my old wired Linksys is that you can mix DHCP and static IPs. Previously, when I was running a Linux box for my web sever I had to create a virtual server so it would have a static IP for forwarding port 80 to. With this Netgear router I can just specify a static IP based on the MAC address of the server. The wireless connection has only given me trouble once so far. It started intermittently fading out. I had to switch over to a wired connection rather than try to troubleshoot it because I was in the middle of doing something for work. Too bad VPN kicks out when you switch NICs.

This product is very good but the mail in rebate is BS. I never received anything and I mailed the rebate coupon several months ago.

Centrino users take note - UPDATED, November 20, 2003
By unknown
ORIGINAL REVIEW: I purchased mine a few days ago with a Gateway 200 Centrino notebook. Set-up was a breeze with all my computers in my LAN. Nevertheless, my Centrino notebook kept on loosing connection. Tried several things and noticed there was a firmware update in the Netgear web site which fixes connectivity issues with Centrinos. Downloaded it, upgraded the router and it works well now. If it would of not presented this "issue" out of the box, I would of probably given it 5 stars.UPDATE: My Netgear router died after 3 days. There are just too many reviews with DOA. I think the manufacturer should do a much better job at screening infant mortality. I still gave it a couple of stars as the product design is OK and customer service was acceptable. SUGGESTION: I strongly recommend you stay away from Netgear until they get their act together and get the LINKSYS from CISCO. I purchased the LINKSYS B router. It is so much sturdier, physically and operational. Just as user friendly as the Netgear and already comes pre-certified for CENTRINO.

Router works well...but DON'T EXPECT TO SEE THE REBATE, November 20, 2003
By unknown
Title says it all. My experience with the router has been completely positive. I'm still now 20 weeks into getting the rebate....had to call and ask for it after 16 weeks .... now the 'www.wheresmyrebate.com' says its mailed....but of course three weeks later its not here. No matter how good the product this is NOT WORTH THE HASSLE unless you enjoy being stiffed.

easy setup - works great - good price, November 19, 2003
By nilub (Fremont, CA United States)
I was in the market for setting up a wireless network system at home. The first thing I looked for is a wireless router. The Netgear MR814 perfectly fit my criteria. It is based on the 802.11b protocol that allows 11Mbps data rate. That is more than sufficient for my use. The pricing was attractive too.It was very easy to set up - worked right out of the box. Getting the security feature to work was also pretty easy. I am using it with the Netgear MA521 notebook card, and I am getting about 75-85% signal strength. My router is stationed on the 2nd floor and I usually use the notebook on the first floor. No problems with dropped packets or interference from other devices so far. It has been about a month using it, and I am absolutely loving the freedom of accessing the internet from anywhere in the house.
