quick and easy, September 2, 2003
By aznissan (phoenix, AZ)
I bought this along with my Toshiba laptop, which has a built in wifi. I had both up and surfing the net in less than 15 minutes. Easiest setup I have ever had.

painless installation, no problems, September 2, 2003

    as easy as 123, September 2, 2003
By A. Chan (MD, USA)
I don't know much about computer, let alone networking. I bought this router so I can have my laptop (window 98) and my PC (XP) to have high speed internet at the same time. Took me 2 minutes to connect the wires (cat5 cables) to my cable box and the computers. I'll tackle the wireless USB adapter next so my third pc can access from down stairs without hard wiring.

Need to power off and on, September 1, 2003
By unknown
The installation of product is easy, but the technical support is HORRIBLE. The level 1 support specaialist was not able to figure out that the firmware has to be upgraded and I wasted 4 hours of my time, after that it worked fine for 3 days and then I started to loose the internet connection, powered off the router and rebooted the computer,it started to work fine, but I lost the connection after 10 minutes, it started to happen every time I switched on the PC, it works fine for 10 minutes and again it drops the connection. In order for me to verify that it was the router, I disconnected the router and used my old wired router, I did not have the disconnect issue. After this I installed Netgear, I am having the same issues, I talked to support and they told me to ship it back to the Vendor. My recommendation is not to buy this product from my experience.

Range is Poor but works well, September 1, 2003
By unknown
I was very displeased with the range of this product. I live in a 600sq ft apt and the farthest I am ever away from the product is 30 ft. The second a wall pops up (im talking about those paper thin, non loadbearing apt walls) the signal strength drops. Two walls and signal strength drops to low. All while I am only 30 ft away. I sincerely do not believe the claim of 500 ft range. other than that, XP pro hooked up the components within 5 minutes and effortlessly.

    Great Value, August 31, 2003

I had no problems connecting this wireless router to Comcast Cable. Automatic. Easy. Fast. Checked out the wireless functionality with Palm Tungsten C WiFi with no problems. Acceptable range. Great value for the money. Don't know why people have problems getting this router up and running.

Sturdy and aesthetically pleasing!, August 31, 2003
By poliglota (San Ramon, CA United States)
The Netgear folks have done it well -- a sturdy and aesthetic 802.11b product offering that most of us can finally afford. I am reviewing the new MR814v2 router, smaller and lighter than its predecessor. I started by testing direct network connection through one of the 4 ports -- its Web interface is clean and easily understood, and more reliable than Linksys's. I then installed the Netgear 802.11b wireless card on my laptop, and its MAC was automatically detected by the MR814 (default configuration has no security or encryption enabled, which I strongly advise to do after successful wireless hookup "in the open"). Total time to install, get connected and secure the wireless connection: 15 minutes. I even had time to upgrade my router's firmware from their Web site. Then tried it around our two-floor townhome, backyard, etc., and getting very good to good signal strength in the farthest corners. When my DSL only gives me 1.1 Mbps downstream, this signal strength is more than enough for surfing. File copy speed between my laptop and my Linux server was also very decent. Strongly recommended!

I own three of these things.. one V1, two V2s..

What ever you do, dont own a V1.. its not ready
for primtime.. there is a reason after all why they
created a V2.

Techsupport is pathetic.. Hope you never have to
call them.. I have been trying to get the V1 to email
logfiles ever since we have purchased it.. if you get
a V1, save the box and return it..

Setup was easy, the web interface is not difficult.. just
hope you dont have issues.. they will not get resolved
talking to the techsupport folks..

Not compatible with linux wireless, August 28, 2003
By Loh (San Jose, CA United States)
Bought this unit and found out it is not compatible with my linux system. My linux found the wireless connection, but can't talk to it. I changed and used DLink-614+. Power up and "wa la" it works.

So highly not recommend if you have linux system.

Windows work and coverage is good.

    High performing B-band router, August 26, 2003
By supa_dave (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I was pleasantly surprised when I purchased this router as a low-cost wi-fi connection for a second home. I normally avoid connecting via B-band frequencies because of its interference with cordless phones, TV's, microwaves and other electronic devices, but the NetGear MR814 surprised me.

My other home is possibly the most unfriendly battleground for 802.11b signals. It has about 15 cordless phones in a variety of 2.4Ghz and 900 Mhz signals, in addition to a pluthora of other electronic devices. However, the MR814 performed flawlesslesly, even when I held my cordless phone right up to the transmitting antennas. Range is excellent throughout our 6 bedroom house, though it is susceptible to some dead spots and interfering devices.

Remember that NetGear is a Nortel Networks spin-off, a leading communications networking manufacturer.

Works out of the box, August 24, 2003
By Suor Kim (Seattle, WA)
This is a great, sleek little wireless router. I have two PC computers in my apartment and an iBook with an Airport card. I simply connected the Netgear router to my DSL modem and it worked for all three computers right out of the box. Wireless security is simple with the web-based router configuration tool. Set up was a snap. I was able to set up a small network and secure the wireless network in 5 minutes.

DOES NOT WORK FOR MORE THAN 20 MINUTES ON A CENTRINO LAPTOP, August 23, 2003
By sheriff6789 (Sammamish, Washington United States)
I bought this router and discovered that every 20 minutes it booted me off. so I returned it and got another one, figuring that the first one was defective. It works fine wired and with other wireless aplications BUT NOT WITH CENTTRINO.

Overall Great Product, August 23, 2003
By Michael Le (Austin, TX)
This product looks and works great!!! Its easy to use and setup and configure. It took me less than 5 minutes to setup and start surfing wirelessly. It has acceptable range. I have also tried the Micrsoft Wireless, but I am alot more satisfied with this product. There are no software needed unlike Microsft. I have done some researching and price watching, and I have found this to be by far the best deal. I got mine for [$$] after rebate!!! Great!! Overall I am very satisfied with this Netgear Wireless.

very un happy, August 23, 2003
By Dennis Stanworth (Vallejo, CA United States)
I spent 4 weeks with customer service, who were very patient and helpfull, but in the end we could never get it to work with my speedstream modem. I finally gave up, took my losses and bought a syslink.

Make sure you buy the 2nd version, August 22, 2003
By unknown
In contrast with the many complaints, I have no problem with mine since I bought the 2nd or newer version of the router. Make sure you buy a the new version (2nd version) instead of updating the firmware. I would suggest calling netgear first to get UPC code of the new version (each version is different) before buying since most of the sales people I talked to did not know the difference between old and new version (sales person usually convince you to buy and may tell you something that might not be true so be careful).

No Problems and I'm using Macs, August 21, 2003
By chilmert (Fargo, ND USA)
When I was looking for a new wireless router that could fit my tight budget, accomodate two wired Macs and a wireless 802.11g (Airport Extreme) Powerbook the first thing I decided was that I couldn't afford an Airport Basestation or the new, and therefore pricey, 802.11g routers (which, by the way, usually will not speed up your dsl/cable connection to the internet, only your connection to other computers connected directly to the router). I did quite a bit of research and found a great deal of inconsistent feedback concerning this and other routers. So, I'd just like to set the record straight for other Mac users possibly in the same boat - I've got a G3 and G4 wired to this router and a 12in Powerbook connected wirelessly. I've had zero problems over the last three months and say that for the price (including rebate) this is an awesome router for my needs. (NOTE: The Airport extreme Card is backwards compatible, meaning that it connects to this router at 802.11b speeds - which has been fine for my needs including steaming music, etc.).

    Avoid, August 21, 2003
By caninehead (Boulder, Colorado USA)
This nice looking unit worked fine at first. Over time it has developed a nasty habit of requiring a reboot (unplug to power down...there is no on/off switch) due to lost wireless connection with my laptop (a couple times per day now). My unit is either going in for a refund or it will be thrown against a wall in frustration. I expected more from Netgear. Maybe these units are built and priced now to be disposable...like inkjet printers.

Booted me off every 20 mins!!, August 18, 2003
By sheriff6789 (Sammamish, Washington United States)
I recently bought a Netgear wireless router and was extremely dissapointed with my purchase. I bought it because i have a centrino equipped notebook. Installation was very easy and simple. My laptop immediately detected the signal. However, it seems that around every 20 minutes my computer said "wireless connection unavailable"
I have a friend that sets up wireless networks for a living. The problem seemed to stump him and he could not maintain a steady connecton with his computer meaning that it was a problem with the router.
So I returned it and bought a Linkskys router insted. It is definitely worth the extra money for its reliability

Wireless Works, But Buggy, August 17, 2003
By blueyes_ktb (Greensboro, NC USA)
I have used the Netgear MR814 Wireless Router for several months now. The physical design is great and the wireless aspect works great.
As a router, though, it leaves much to be desired. Port forwarding nor DMZ applications work, even with the newest 4.11 release of the firmware. For those running software requiring open ports behind the router, choose a different manufacturer.
