Warning - research and see if it works with your card first!, August 14, 2003
By azpeterson (Phoenix, AZ USA)
This product looks slick, setup is easy and works great for wired connections. However, I still can't get the wireless to work correctly with a new Centrino notebook. After the fact, I found lots of others having the same problem - it disconnects every 20 minutes or so. I don't have these problems on other access points with my laptop. check out [website]
for all the details around this.

tech support is not much help either - and the wait is long. On different calls, the wait times have been quoted as 160 minutes down to a minimum of 40 minutes. And they couldn't help once I waited to get through.

Easy set up - nice range, August 13, 2003

I had little trouble setting this unit up. From opening the box to surfing the web from my bath tub in less then an hour!

The enclosed CD ROM set up assistant was very easy to follow.

I was able to surf the web from my living room (about 55 feet from the router) with no trouble or noticable decrease in speed.

I have the router connected to my desktop Windows PC and cable modem. Our laptop is a Mac with a AirPort card (NOT the AirPort extreme card). This unit is a fraction of the cost of an Apple AirPort base and for my needs it does everything I would need the more expensive unit to do. I dont believe that you can install this router if you only have a Mac so do your homework before you buy one if you are an Apple only household.

So far so good - I am very happy with this item!

Do not expect much tech support, August 13, 2003

I bought an MR814v2 and Ma521 PC card about three weeks ago. I freely admit to being far from an expert in this area. I have not been able to make the equipment work and have sent eight emails to Netgear "support" with no answer. I couldn't suggest this company to anyone, the equipment may be fine, but if you can't get help to get it running, who knows?

Update the firmware, August 12, 2003
By unknown
I have a desktop with LAN port and a laptop with internal wireless card. This router can connect both to the Internet through a cable modem (Road Runner). There is practically no setup for the desktop, but it didn't work with my laptop initially. I spent a couple of hours searching for help on their web site, trying various setting, but it didn't solve the problem. Then I upgrade the router using the latest firmware, and it works.

Great for surfing but not for serving., August 12, 2003

This product would have received 5 stars except for:

1) Port forwarding does not work. That means you can't optimally use your favorite file sharing software (eg, Kazaa) with this router. (-1) star

2) When your connections exceed 256 connections (very common when file sharing) the router dies, loses its connection to your broadband ISP and requires a power cycle in order to get it working again. (-1) star

3) On the feature list, it says it has network printer sharing capabilities but it's actually done thru setting up a dedicated pc attached to the printer, so you have to turn that pc on and wait for it to boot in order to print. No dedicated print server. (-1) star

It does get (+1) star for style and design and another (+1) star for having good range and a removable antenna for mounting in a more optimal location, however, I haven't been able to find a place where you can purchase the ext. cable.

My other choices are Microsoft, Linksys, and SMC...although, the SMC is the only one that comes with a dedicated print server.

Works great (after upgrading firmware)!!!, August 12, 2003

Based on my research, I hoped that I'd have this router up and running as soon as I plugged it in, especially since a friend of mine had bought it the day before and installed it without a problem (and I consider myself to be more technically savvy than she is). Well, after two days I figured out that my problem (having an ethernet cable connection to the router working but not being able to access the router wirelessly) would be resolved by a firmware upgrade. In the hopes that this will save other people the time and hassle, I wanted to let future purchasers know that you can find the upgrade at Netgear's website under support for the MR814v2. Now that it works, I love it (and had I known about the upgrade, I too would have had the product up and running within 15 minutes after opening the box).

Awesome Product, Easy Setup, but Poverty Stirken Tech Sup., August 11, 2003
By unknown
Ok the unit works great, it is plug and play. It looks and works as pictured and described. Only complaint I have is the firmware upgrade that you MUST do if you have a dell truemobile 1300/1400 card. Netgear reccomends the upgrade, but my great dell tech. support guy acctualy gave me the link. After installing I can get a good signal even at 1,000ft. away from the unit (thats with several walls and a tree or two in between).

However, tech-support is TERRIBLE and if you do call you WILL be on hold for a VERY long time, but the set-up and instructions are easy enough.
If you have a truemobile you can download the update from:

Just works (with Windows and Mac), August 9, 2003

I bought this to replace a Siemens wireless router that the wireless portion never worked on - it had a range of about 2 feet. What a difference with Netgear. Strong signal through several rooms and mountains of electronics. Setup was a breeze with Mac OS X. I first tried to set it up on my Windows 98 machine, and had some trouble, but I think it was related to some proprietary software I have installed on that machine. After setting up the router from my Mac, I had no problem accessing from my desktop PC or my laptop.

Worked on the first try with cox.net cable modem. Have used the wired connection for 2 months without trouble. Hope to test the wireless access soon with a tablet PC.

    Total Control, August 7, 2003

This Router gives you total control of any computer you have hooked to it. It also monitors all sites each computer goes to (a must for parents)and if setup will e-mail you those lists then you have the option to block or allow certain sites from future veiwing! You also can set times each computer is allowed online! I LOVE THIS ROUTER!!!

Excellent router, trouble free, easy to set up, August 7, 2003
By mariusz106 (Roselle, IL United States)
NETGAR MR814 WIRELESS ROUTER. I've heard people say that it's a bit bulky, but if you stand it up on the vertical stand there is no problem with it taking up space. I got this item about 6 months ago from an auction site and it has been trouble free since. Indoors it works well as long as you don't have too many walls in between your pc and the router, I guess it depends what is inside your walls. Configuration is browser based and super simple, even setting up encryption is fairly straightforward. currently I have the router connected to a desktop(by wire) to a laptop(wish sandisk wireless card) and to a Dell Axim palmtop(netgear ma701 wireless CF card). It's fairly easy to set up the router to exchange info between your home PC's. I've had good signal indoors to about 70feet(walls and doors in between). But range varies depending on obstructions. For most people it should work excellent indoors up to about 50-60feet regardless of obstructions. I have not tried to use this outside, so I don't know the range. I would recommend it as it is troble free.

Works as expected; for home use, August 7, 2003
By you must be joking
Hardware : MR814 802.11b (v1) coupled with WG511 802.11G version PCMCIA card from Netgear. 802b cards are priced similar to g cards.

802.11b "speed" more than adequate for Internet applications

Works without much configuration. Have not used all features yet, such as filtering, forwarding etc.

Used in DELL XP and Win2K notebooks for several weeks now.
Wireless application in XP has trouble waking from hibernation sometimes. Win 2K much better, but Win2K more stable in general between these two machines anyway.

Reliable usage, although at one time consistently dropped connections. This was because of interference from someone else neaby using the same channel (Maybe Source of other problems noted here); so changed channel and ok.

Upgraded to latest firmware which fixes time of day from NTP severs amongst other things.

Have connected behind existing Linksys router connected to Cable Modem. This did not require any configuration changes, although check for router protocols used in both, i.e. RIP.

Occasionally have to reboot one or both routers, although this isn't that frequent; stable for days, weeks.

Didn't work from the start. Was on hold for 60 minutes for tech support. Tech was friendly, recognized the unit was defective, and authorized return (I paid for return shipping.) Can't comment on performance, as I haven't had a chance to assess, but out-of-box experience was definitely disappointing.

DO NOT BUY NETGEAR PRODUCTS!!, August 4, 2003
By lemmy_999 (knoxville, TN United States)
Contrary to their claims, their products have no warranty at all (unless you pay for it). I have a 2 year old gateway router that had a 5 year warranty that stopped working one day so I called their tech support. The tech support person told me that since the product is over 90 days old and they do not manufacture it anymore, then I would have to contact their pay tech support line to get an RMA. If they are able to fix the problem over the phone line, then they will charge me, otherwise they will offer me an RMA number for a return. So basically you have to pay to use their warranty. A friend who is a lawyer is currently handling this situation.

I had the original version of this product. It worked great, covered the whole house even when installed in the basement. I never had dropouts from it. Unfortunately this one got fried when lighning struck the house.

I had been so happy with it I went straight out and bought another. When I opened the box though I discovered I had the V2 model, which is about 1/3rd the size. This a much inferior product to the original. The range is much less and drop outs are regular, every few minutes, even when in the same room as the router. I've been back to the store once to exchange it but the replacement is no better. I'm going to return this one too.

    Intensely Frustrating - Don't Risk It!, August 3, 2003
By unknown
I'm happy for all the reviewers for whom this product worked out, but it was a disaster for me. Just to hit the high points:

(1) The set-up instructions had bizarre blind spots which left me without guidance on key issues.

(2) Once it was set up, the wireless connection dropped incessantly -- more or less every twenty minutes -- no matter what I did (and I spent hours trying to solve the problem).

(3) The wireless connection could not survive distances of more than 4 or 5 feet, even with no walls or other obstructions in the way. (Note that I was using both the Netgear router and Netgear wireless cards).

(4) My first call to the help line started with 45 minutes on hold. The second time I called help I waited on hold for 45 minutes before the system hung up on me (with no indication why). I called back and waited another 25 minutes before the system hung up on me again. I called back a 3rd time, and got through after 35 minutes.

(5) The help people I spoke with were very friendly and eager to help, but nothing they offered helped even the slightest bit. For example, they directed me to a system upgrade that was supposed to solve the problem of dropped connections; it made absolutely no difference whatsoever. They suggested various other tactics, but none made a difference. I sank hours into implementing their suggestions -- all wasted.

(5) Finally, help told me that they would research the dropped connection issue further and get back to me. They never did. I doubt they meant badly; much more likely, Netgear refuses to provide even a fraction of the funds necessary to sustain a workable help line.

Reading other reviews, I guess it must be true that this product works for some people. But I've got good basic equipment, am generally able to make computers (etc) do what they're supposed to do, and gave this product many hours of effort, and it was an absolute failure. Maybe the product is finicky about what other products it will work with; or maybe Netgear's quality control is so bad that the quality of individual units varries enormously. Either way, I'd say its not worth the gamble. There's no reason to risk the kind of frustration this product caused me. Save yourself the ulcer.

first off, this works fine with a mac. that was my biggest concern, but didn't turn out to be a problem. setup took less than a minute. i plugged the netgear router in, stretched the ethernet cord to the cable modem, then turned my airport card on my ibook on and selected netgear and there i was no. hassle, no probem.

my reason for buying this model was the price. it's tough to beat, especially compared to apple's airport.

the reason this didn't get five stars was that the range can be limited. i live in a small, two-bedroom house and sometimes loose my signal. but, luckily i get it fine in my home office. (the only cable line is in the living room, it's easiest just to leave it all there instead of running wire, hence the wireless router).

I bought this router couple of days back... Took me less than an hour to set the whole thing up, needs no technical skills... Sleek, works great and really inexpensive. Would highly recommend this for all.

I bought a MR814v2 for $... after rebate. It works great so far.
I strongly suggest update the firmwire to version 5.01
It fixes some bugs I encountered with the original firmwire
5.0
And be careful to download the firmwire for MR814v2, not for
MR814

This little thing is perfect for home use - hasn't gone down once in the 2 months that I've had it so far. At 40 bucks, it's worth every penny and more.
