Plug It In - IT WORKS!, June 13, 2003
By aldera (Grandville, MI United States)
________I've been using Lynksys products, almost exclusively, for the past 5 or so years. They usually work, but can be a pain to set up. I just bought a new Intel Centrino-based laptop (Acer Travelmate 800LCi - which is great, too) and was having all sorts of problems trying to get it to connect to my Linksys Wireless 4-port Switch/DSL Router(model BEFW11S4).... WHAT A GREAT PRODUCT! Out of the box and running in 10 minutes! Outstanding installation instructions and everything worked as advertised. I've had it up and running for five days now and I haven't had to reset it once. That's a major improvement over the Lynksys. I've got 6 computers hooked up to it, 3 via cable and 3 via wireless. My only regret - I didn't start with Netgear in the first place! If you're looking for an easy to install and reliable connection (okay, the jury's still out on longterm reliability) in a wireless router, this is the one!! It's even a good looking unit. Way to go, NETGEAR!! BTW, I have no affiliation with Netgear. I'm a software developer at Siemens. I write very few reviews here, but if I'm extremely satisfied and impressed with a product, I'm willing to take the time to reward the manufacturer with a good review. ralph

Cheap, expandable, and easy to use, June 13, 2003
By Herr Chef-san (Napa Valley, CA)
I bought this as my "traveling router" to go with me to Hotels, friends houses, abroad, etc... wireless everywhere. It is small, robust, friendly, and will guarantee you get your bag searched at the airport every time! The antenna is removeable and uses the standard RPSMA adapters so that you can plug in high gain antennas with a small cheap pigtail... this is a great cheap router.

Great MR814v2 deal!, June 12, 2003
By nercalu (Pittsburgh)
For those of you wondering, I know of at least two people (including myself) who received the new version (MR814v2) of this router. The new version is smaller, lighter, and generally has better wireless coverage. The specs page for this item are for the first version, but nevertheless, I got a MR814v2. Make sure you get it, it rocks: easy setup, nice looks, great coverage. (I have five machines: WinXP and Win2K, two wirelessly connected, no hitches)

Great product, June 12, 2003
By j_pete (Macomb, Michigan United States)
I am running the base unit from a Windows ME operating system and the USB adapter on a Windows XP operating system. The installation on each machine was a breeze and my wireless connection speed, to the second story of my house, is just as fast as if I was connected via cable line.

Perfect Product, June 12, 2003
By Lon F. Binder (New York, NY United States)
This wireless router is stylish and functional -- you'd think it was a Sony. It's a snap to set up, has a great web interface, and natively supports DynDNS. Every option a network dreams of, and even better, the ability to disable those options! Pick one up now.

Build your network (iMAC + PC Dell + Cable Modem) in no time, June 12, 2003
By elzarpe (Midland, Michigan United States)
This is really plug and play, folks. You'll spend more time opening the boxes than what you'll spend setting up the gadgets. I was ready to roll in about 10 minutes. I bought this in conjunction with the Wireless USB adapter, MA101. I connected the router to the iMAC and to the Internet connection. In 2 minutes I was seeing the Internet from the iMac just I used to before I connected the router. Then I went downstairs, plugged the MA101 to the Dell Dimension 2350 running XP, put the MA101 CD, run the "Found new Hardware Wizard" ... voila! It works! A minor glitch in the instructions manual though: if you don't choose "Allow me to connect to the selected wireless network ....." it will show that the network is not available. It took me one minute to troubleshoot so I would still give it a five stars rating, being the first product I have bought in years that works without me calling technical support.

great router, June 12, 2003
By J. Wilson (Texas)
I can't say much about this router, it gets the job done and gets it done well. I had some trouble but it wasn't the router's fault it was the network card I had (broke). I reccommend this to people who need a good router that is wire/wireless and is affordable.P.S. (get v2 which is silver and get the Netgear wireless usb adapter if you are going wireless much easier to do than install a wireless pc card (model no. for adapter MA111).

Do not buy it!, June 12, 2003
By ua3qrz (Dover, NH United States)
This is a really bad WiFi router. I own this router (MR814 not v2) five months. I'm using at home 2 wireless notebooks and 4 wired PC. Two PCs are up and running all the time, other mostly evening or night time. I'd upgraded firmware to Firmware version 4.11 5/03 (build 4/16). New firmware has more features and fixed DynDNS client. But! - Every day the MR814 hangs, so I have to reset it by power cycle, sometimes 3 or 5 times per evening. - Any time when I need download something big I have to reset router first and then start download, otherwise the router hangs after ~30 min depends how many TCP sessions opened - The Prism2 WiFi cards (tested MS MN-520, Senao SL-2511CD PLUS EXT2) have problems with wireless connection; Old Prism cards works better. - Small wireless power output not allows me work in my wooden house over 100 feet away even with superior Senao card. I'm strongly advise you do not buy this router, unless you have no choice. I've heard that MR814v2 is better but have not tested yet and doubted that it's true. The MR814v2 has older version of firmware, so DynDNS should be broken as minimum. Thanks and wish you all the best.

Gets me where I'm going, June 11, 2003
By Loren J. Donelson (Seattle, WA USA)
This router gets a thumbs up for me. I've been using it for the past year in my apartment building. I get decent signal strength all the way up to the fourth floor from my apartment on the second, and all the way down the hall in either direction. Every once in a while I have to reboot the device, but it was extremely easy to set up, and has all the features that a home user would need.

Good speed, great connectivity! I have not been disconnected once. With the MA401 card, setup took all of ten minutes. And it looks pretty on your desk.

Not compatible with Airport Extreme (MR814v2), June 9, 2003
By unknown
Just a word of caution to Mac folks who are using aluminum PowerBooks: the Netgear MR814v2 router is incompatible with Airport Extreme. But it works flawlessly with the older Airport cards. Netgear tech support hasn't gotten back to me yet regarding possible solutions. Might have to exchange the router with a Linksys instead.

Easy to setup but not reliable, June 7, 2003

Router easy to setup. However, locks up every couple of days and requires rebooting. No incoming logs.

Great Router, June 6, 2003
By Bruce L Kaplan (Evans, Georgia United States)
You can't beat this router for the money. Installation for the first computer was a breeze. The second compuetr required a call to their tech support but that was not the fault of the router. It works very smoothly and the wireless feature works very well. I highly recommend this router.

Simple Setup, June 6, 2003
By Richard Gilmore (Las Vegas, NV United States)
I've had this router for a few months now, hardly any troubles and setup was easy. Reception is great around my condo and thru the immediate walls. The primary reason I bought it was price. Also I have had Netgear products previously and they all worked great. Gave it four stars for design, wish it was a stackable design. And the reset button would be more convenient in the front than the back.

It doesn't get any Better or Easier than this, June 6, 2003
By Guillermo F. Salas (Milwaukee, WI United States)
There is so much I could say about this product, but I am going to try to keep it simple: This is the BEST!Lets start by saying that it looks slick! Nice lines, non offensive and that rubber base! Totally and superb plug & play, right out of the box. Wireless features are all there and enabled by default (unlike the competition!), as well as all the additional services needed to run your small network such as DHCP. The web administration interface could use a little work, but in all it is easy to navigate and non intrusive. Great Product at an UNBEATABLE Price. Buy NOW!

Great Way To Get Wireless!, June 4, 2003
By Dolf M (Cincinnati, OH)
This is a great product. Within an hour I had two desktops, two laptops, and an xbox all hooked up.Installation could not have been easier. Just a couple tweaks via the browser-based router utility. Product is nice because it offers wired/wireless connections. XBox and desktops use wired and laptops are wireless via the MR804 PC card. Performance is very good. DSL connection is in second story bedroom, and wireless works fine all the way down in the basement. 5 stars!
