just got it and..., March 13, 2003
By erik (kansas city, mo United States)
so far so good. I am new to the whole networking concept and I was a little concerned that I would not get it. But right out of the box the netgear MR814 looked great went perfectly with my computer and the room. Very attractive design was a plus. But the real test is how it performed. Set-up was easy, however, I did have to call tech support because I was not getting a connection to the net. The staff walked me through the process and I was on in about 5 min. The next thing that I have to do is network my Windows XP PC up to my wireless USB adapter. I will update you on it's performance and tell you my opinion. You might wonder why I gave it only 4 stars. I am waiting to add or delete a star when I set up the wireless connection.

EASY setup, flawless so far, March 12, 2003
By Don (Bayville, NJ United States)
I can't believe the reviews about the easy setup were true. But they are. I have a Comcast cable modem. Without any software, CD, or configuration it worked out of the box on XP. Just connected it, and rebooted everything(router, cable modem, and computer) and I was online! Truely easy setup. I never even had to go into the setup config at all. I connected the MA101 USB to my upstairs computer, XP installed the driver - again no software needed except for XP's built in drivers - and I was online upstairs. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes total for both computers. What a wonderful product!

Great!, March 10, 2003

I upgraded from the LinkSYS WAP11. Works a lot better, I am seeing better wireless speeds. Also it was very simple to set-up, it took 5 mins to get everything working. Must have for home wireless networks!

Working in under 5 minutes!, March 5, 2003
By S. King (Ephrata, PA USA)
. I used this router to replace a router and separate wireless access point. It was up and running serving a cable internet connection to 2 wired and 2 wireless PCs all in under 5 minutes.I've worked with a Netgear router before, so the management webpage look and feel was familiar. I like the fact the antenna can be upgraded to a higher gain one if desired, though the signal's going from a second floor to notebooks on the first floor at diagonally opposite ends of the house about 60 feet apart and through 3 plaster walls. I'm quite satisfied with the signal strenth: the notebooks' XP connection qualities vary from "very good" to "excellent." I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Easy to install and Signal is Strong, March 3, 2003
By Shu-Ping Chung (Houston, TX United States)
Netgear MR814 is a well designed and nice looking product. The installation is easy and without any extra configuration. Just plug and play, then it works. I purchased it because it comes with one WAN port and four RJ45 ports. I just need to buy a wireless card for one of my laptops which is far away from the Router, the other one still can be connected with a network cable. I can save my money like this way. There is no problem with my two laptops running XP at all. The signal of wireless connection is strong enough. It took 10 minutes to setup everything. The only thing I need to do is interconnecting the Cable Modem and Router with a RJ45 cable, and makes the wires look neat. That's it. So simple. It happed to me that the Netgear Router can not get IP. This is for your reference, turn on the Cable Modem first, then Netgear Router. You can also to go to system admin. web page to get the IP manually.

Good hardware with software/resource problems, February 28, 2003
By J. Taylor (Norcross, GA United States)
I bought the netgear wireless system to connect two home computers. The hardware set up is just as easy as the promotional brochure promises, but there are real problems trying to make various software programs sync. I consider myself to be a fairly experienced PC user, but not a network administrator. Netgear's website and manuals are useless for most people who are not complete "techies" with network experience. For example, it is very difficult to make AOL work with the Netgear router online set up program. Because there is no software included to actually program the router directly (everything must be done online), you get stuck in circular logic if you can't connect to figure out why you can't connect. It would have been helpful if Netgear had included some diagnostic software to help users determine the source of connectivity conflicts, or at least have made the manual robust enough to be useful. I would recommend this product only for someone with strong networking experience.

Does exactly what it's supposed to do, February 28, 2003
By puthupa (New York, NY United States)
When I decided to go wireless, I first went with the D-Link AirPlus series, figuring the extra speed would be worth it. Unfortunately, it had to be reset 1-2 times a day at minimum, so the network would always go down every few hours. After returning the D-Link gear, I did some research and the Netgear MR814 received many good reviews from people. This time, my goal was stability and the Netgear truly delivers. Setup was ridiculously easy, and after installing my Lucent pc card in my laptop, our wireless network was up within 30 minutes! The installation was painless and straight-forward - the instructions that came with the Netgear are concise and very well-written, so those of you who are not as computer savvy will have as easy a time setting this up as an experienced network administrator. Not only that, but the network has been up without any downtime since I installed it one week ago (24/7). I highly recommend the Netgear - setup is well-documented and easy, and it does exactly what it's supposed to do. *UPDATE - 1 month later* I have had NO problems whatsoever with the Netgear yet. It has not gone down once, connectivity is always great (though I live in a 1 bedroom apartment). An added bonus - those annoying Windows Messenger pop-ups have stopped as the router does not broadcast my IP address.

A good buy, easy to use, February 27, 2003
By unknown
I bought one of those Linksys firewalls ages ago, and it was a pain to configure with my DSL service. This one was plug-and-play easy and had the wireless LAN to boot. I have had this for over a month now, and I still don't see any downside to it!

Could not have been easier!, February 27, 2003
By robtyler937 (South Boston, MA United States)
I usually require some help from a more computer-literate family member when setting up new toys on my computers. Netgear's installation was simple. I did it all myself without breaking a sweat nor cursing! Everything worked on first try and I'm surfing online, sharing files and printing all within an hour of opening the box.I've read the horror stories here about calling tech support for other brands and it makes me glad I didn't even give those brands a single glance when I was shopping.

This is the real deal., February 27, 2003
By Barry McKochner (Palm Desert, CA USA)
I've owned a Linksys wired 4-port router switch (BEFSR41) for over 3 years and wanted to go wireless; an office supply chain store had mail-in rebate offers on MICROSOFT's router and PCMCIA card, and thinking it was a good deal, I bit. Their product felt cheap coming out of the box, and was it ever -- it couldn't keep the connection on my Cable modem. My IM program kept getting booted off, about every 20 seconds... try to have a conversation! The salesperson swore to me that he's never had problems with those before, that maybe my wireless phone was interfering (so much so that my WIRED computers had the same problems??) but sorry - I know everything was set up correctly, and the quality just wasn't there... and I'm not paid to be their beta tester, I wasn't going to wait for a firmware upgrade! Back to the store with you, next please! So I surfed around for a better option, looked at the reviews here and at CNET, and found this router. Most reviews were good, and the cliche "Acme co., NEVER AGAIN!" posts weren't too numerous. I thought I would wait to replace my Linksys with another Linksys since I've been relatively happy with it, but aided by a generous mail-in rebate, I gave this - and Netgear's MA401 PCMCIA card - a shot. One word: FANTASTIC! My IM programs work great, websurfing is spotless, and DMZ works well for my gaming 'needs' (although I'm not a "hard-core" PC gamer... PS2 rules!). It worked great out of the box, it accepted my advanced settings (disabled DHCP, etc) without a hitch, and I get a good signal & throughput across my house (above 80% anywhere indoors, always at 11mbps). Let's not kid ourselves, the installation of ANY network device requires a minimum of computer knowledge, so I won't tell you that "it's so easy anyone can do it"... but even if you're a complete novice, at least this machine will work invisibly once you have someone help you install it. If you know the difference between an IP address and an e-mail address, you'll likely have no trouble. And if you're a wannabe-techie, this machine isn't so dumbed-down as to be completely neutered... you can configure it to do what you want it to do. BOTTOM LINE: Rock-bottom price, yet works great. Easy to install as networking gets. Thoroughly configurable. Looks really cool in your office. Look no further.

Printer & File sharing, February 26, 2003
By srb (Chicago, IL)
Broadband sharing is excellent and it did not take more than a minute to get going. The router was also bought so we could share the color printer and the laser printer attached locally on two separate computers(One upstairs and other downstairs) I could print only once from the downstairs computers to the upstairs computer. But after the boot up next day I am losing the connectivity. I have tried to assign static IP addresses to the computer - but no luck. And when I ask Netgear for support -- they say I have to pay per incident charges!!! their CS really [is bad]!!!

The best, February 24, 2003

This is my first time purchasing a wireless product such as this and I am absoultly thrilled with it. I can be anywhere in my home and Netgear comes through for me. I have been going around and around reviewing and comparing all of the wireless products on the market and I finally chose Netgear. Netgear does all it says it does. It was quick and easy even for me and I would highly recommend it to the beginner and the novice pc user.

Good and Easy, February 23, 2003
By irishpride76 (Pearland, TX)
This is a good product and it's bascially east to set up. One thing to lookout for...When setting up WEP, make sure that you enter the Encryption code on the remote system. The setup doesn't mention this. Other than that, it works great and sets up in a flash.

Best Thing Since Sliced Bread, February 22, 2003
By Rodney Hoffman (Hockessin, DE United States)
I have a laptop with a Symbol wireless PCMCIA card that I use for work and wanted to be able to use it unteathered at home. I still have other "wired" devices at home and wasn't yet ready to convert them to wireless. This unit fit the bill perfectly, it has replaced my old "wired" router completely. It has 4 "wired" ports in addition to the wireless interface. I didn't even use the installation CD that came with it. I only had to cycle power on my cable modem to make it work properly. The web configuration also seems very "friendly". I also enabled the 128bit WEP encryption to match my configuration at work. My Symbol wireless card works seemlessly with the Netgear router. It's great.

Not so hot, February 21, 2003
By Nicholas Borowitz (Sleepy Hollow, NY USA)
Came home and hooked it up with my Earthlink DSL. Didn't work. Checked the message boards around the internet and found out that it dosen't work with XP. They were right. Used my Windows 2000 laptop and it went through without a hitch. Now here is the problem. I went across my apartment (1 bedroom) and the signal is poor..... Don't buy if you have walls in your house.

Newbie Network, February 18, 2003
By JJ (NJ, NJ United States)
Bought this router and the Netgear MA401 wireless PCMCIA card to network the DSL from my emachine in the basement to my Dell laptop in the bedroom. Setup was simple with only minor glitches due to my DSL provider being Verizon and their PPoE setup. If not for Verizon I'm sure setup would have been a breeze! I get 100% signal two floors up! Have to restart the network once or twice a day, due to getting kicked off by Verizon, I'm sure! It's no big deal to do, but it's annoying! I know virtually nothing about networking and it was easy and simple to get my network up and running!

Works like a charm, February 10, 2003
By unknown
Installation was a snap - took less than 10 minutes. It's very simple to setup and configure. The range is excellent too. There's some minor interference with my 2.4GHz cordless phone, but barely noticeable. This is a well designed product that will look good even on your desk. I like it.

excellent product, February 8, 2003
By nick6489 (San Jose, CA USA)
This is just a great product. I had tried to install the SMC router because it was on sale at Fry's for fifty bucks, but the signal strength was low and it would not interoperate properly with my other access point (e.g. laptops connected to different APs could not see each other). I installed this one and everything worked fine, first time. The range is double the SMC. I'm only using it as a wireless/Ethernet bridge so I can't comment on the router/firewall functions.

Netgear MR814 802.11b Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router, February 5, 2003
By alladi (somerset, nj USA)
Just installed this product yesterday. Installation was a breeze. I also got the wireless USB adapter for my desktop and connectivity was a breeze as well. Based on my experience (1 day) I would recommend this.
