Good product for Windows AND Linux with POOR encryption tool, January 13, 2003
By Gnana Hunter (Chicago, IL USA)
I bought this product after returning Linksys and D-Link. D-Link was a bad experience - both the product and the tech support. Linksys & Netgear perform pretty much the same way both in terms of the ease of installation, tech support and link quality etc.

After normal windows installation, I tried to turn the 128-bit encryption by using the passphrase option. But on my laptop I couldn't do the same passphrase on it. I get "Frame dropped error" with a yellow colored big "W" symbol over the icon on the system tray. The workaround for that it is to generate the encryption in hex on the router and type the hex values manually on the laptop.

On the linux side, although I was absolutely hopeless to make it work, surprisingly there are great forums to make it work. www.....org is the best. There are different success stories to make this work.

Overall, I am happy about the product. The tech support is also good. The link/signal quality is averaging 80 percent across the house. In the living room it is only in 70% as it is exactly in the opposite side of where the router is located. In kitchen and other places, it is at its upper 90s.

Needless to say, microwaves, cordless phones have greater impact on the wireless connection.

So get this and you wont regret.

Mahesh

easy to set up, easy to modify, and it never goes down!, January 13, 2003

I've used 2 other 802.11b access points (Linksys, D-Link), and this is by far the easiest to set up and use. WEP is a cinch to setup, as is DMZ and port forwarding, all through the web interface. And I've used it and modified settings with both a Sony VAIO laptop with a D-Link wireless card and an Apple Powerbook with an Airport card. Also have a Playstation 2 hooked up one of the ethernet ports and have had no problems playing SOCOM or NFL2K3 online. 802.11b AP's don't get much better than this!

    Dependable product, January 12, 2003
By (Rob) (US & NL)
I bought this because of the endless problems with my Linksys BEFW11P1 (which seems to be discontinued - rightly so). This one worked right out of the box - and never stopped working.

The only problem I had was getting my DSL provider to assign it an IP address, because the Linksys has no way of releasing it, only renewing. But the Netgear is great - it allows you to release the IP address and it even let me mimick the MAC address from the Linksys router temporarily, enough to convince my ISP's DHCP server to release the IP address and bind it to the new box's MAC address. Also the signal seems much better than the Linksys's.

Very fast and easy, January 12, 2003
By richinchicago (Chicago)
This is one of the slickest setups I have seen. The installation time was mostly determined by how long it took to boot 2 computers and a cable modem. I never even pulled out the CD Rom on the PC hooked to the router via ethernet, and only needed the drivers on the CD Rom for the wireless pc card that went into the laptop. I also implemented the 128 bit wireless security, and limited the wireless connection to known mac addresses on the pc cards. That makes for prety tight security! Anyway I couldn't be happier. It worked right out of the box.

Won't maintain an ssh connection, January 10, 2003
By B. Ware (Left Coast, USA)
While easy to set up, and otherwise works fine, as a router it leaves something to be desired. I cannot maintain a persistent connection either in or out via this router. If I login to any of my usual working computers using ssh, the connection is dropped and timed out after a few minutes, meaning I have to login again on another shell. This is not an intermittent problem, as when one connection dies, I can immediately open another shell and ping the device or log in again - it just drops the connection.

I also plugged my old non-wifi SMC Barricade back in and had none of these problems, so I know it isn't me.

I tried to email customer service and got no reply. I called customer service and got a fellow who didn't know what ssh is, and whose only solution was to reload the driver from the (very slow) website.

So I'm returning this device and getting something else. Probably a wifi SMC Barricade.

    Solid Router, January 10, 2003
By Charles E. Hamilton (Brownsville, Texas United States)
I bought this router at Christmas, 2002 for home use. It was very easy to set up with the default settings, and has been solid. Unlike most gear, it is actually stylish! With the little stand included, you can set it on a shelf on-end and it takes very little room. Range from the second story extends well over 150 ft in some directions but very little in others, apparently due to obstructions, as the antenna is omnidirectional. Wireless is very insecure, so be sure to change the password, set a new group name, turn on encryption, etc. All this is easy with the browser interface. Good stuff!

* I installed my father-in-law's DLink wireless router (614?). Anyway, that router took me 2 reinstalls and 4 calls to tech support. The manual was no help. When it was connected, no internet access! I had to disconnect it 3 times to access the internet because it was not working right. However, it is now working. I say this because the Netgear router installed on it's own and started working before I even finished.

* I have SBC Yahoo DSL on my XP desktop. I had to go into the SBC Connection Manager and turn on the Auto Connect. After that, the router instaled great. My wireless card (Netgear MA401) is installed on Win2000. Everything is working very quickly.

* I had to adjust the router location to get the maximum connection between dsktop and laptop. But it is pretty easy. Just put the router in between the desktop and the laptop. Monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, and any other wireless devices cause interference. So be careful.

* The CD helps out a lot and the directions for the wireless card are very simple. I really reccommend this. CNET rates this router very high.

* My questions are how to print share since it's not a print server, but there are help files I have not explored yet.

* Security Encryption is optional and I coudn't get it right to begin with. I had the laptop set for 64 bit with the passkeys, but it has to be exactly the same on the desktop or you will not have access. The default is Disabled so you can surf, but make sure you read the instructions online on Encryption because they are not in the manual.

    Netgear cable/dsl router, January 8, 2003
By Don Graf (Bellevue, WA USA)
I purchased a Netgear wireless 4 port cable/dsl router, took it out of the box and connected it per diagram on the back. I'm running Windows ME on a desktop. The router worked as promised with NO setup issues or problems (and I have minimal skills). I highly recommend Netgear stuff for ease of setup and use. On an associated issue: I also purchased a wireless PC Card (netgear model MA401)for a laptop (also running ME). I made one call to Netgear support (an embarrassingly simple oversight on my part during the setup), and the laptop was communicating on line with the wireless router in 10 minutes. I have no degredation in speed from my cable connection with both machines running email or downloading files. This gear is a great example of stuff that works as advertised.

Bad range with Apple Powerbook, December 29, 2002

I only got a strong signal with 2 Macs for about 10' with the Netgear MR 814. Also Netgear does not provide the 24/7 tollfree tech support they advertise if you have an Apple setup. I cannot recommend this for folks with Macs who want to share a Cable connection.

Good set up, easy to do. Somewhat limited on distance however.

I am not disappointed at all!!, December 25, 2002
By unknown
I decided to buy only this router after reviewing the product and writer reviews and I must say I am not disappointed.

Installation and setup was a breeze. It auto detected my PPPoE service and I was up on internet in less than 10 minutes from a wired and a wireless connection with encryption(for my wireless LAN). I have not noticed any significant signal strength issues or speed issues with encryption on. So far this is running great and I never had to reboot or lost my connection in almost 3 weeks.

Has its drawbacks.., December 23, 2002
By kbuck320 (Whitefish Bay, WI United States)
I bought the MR814 a month ago .. as many reviewers said, it's easy to set up, and has good range. But I have been disappointed with it and will probably buy something else.

Why? First off, it drops TCP/IP connections that are inactive for more than a few minutes. This is really annoying, since it drops telnet connections quite rapidly .. this behavior is for both the wired and wireless ports.

Second, it needs to be powered off and on at least once a day, as it will start slowing down, not retrieving tcpip connections, and a quick power off/on cycle seems to fix the matter.

So in the end, while it's easy to setup and has good range, I cannot recommend this router because of the above problems.

Easy installation & works great, December 23, 2002
By carche28 (Houston, TX United States)
I always read user comments when shopping for new products, so I'll include the details of my installation for those who may find it helpful. The short story though is that this is a great product that was easy to install and worked as advertised right out of the box.

I was reluctant to go wireless because my home network-to-be would include both an iMac and a PC. I purchased the MR814 router and the MA101 Wireless USB adapter. Within 30 minutes of opening the boxes, the wireless network was active and operating flawlessly. The MR814 router was installed between the iMac and my DSL modem -- the necessary cable was supplied with the router. The router setup required no software installation -- router settings were established using my browser and accessing the Netgear internet site. The instruction manual was very well written and the installation went "by the book". The MA101 wireless USB adapter required a software installation on the PC prior to plugging in the hardware to the USB port. The installation was brief and the software almost self-configured. The MA101 transceiver began communicating with the router immediately with "good" to "very good" signal strength (the PC is located about 150 feet from the router in a single story house). I was extremely impressed with the quality and ease of installation for this product. I highly recommend it!

I would buy this flying saucer again., December 22, 2002

Hey, even me, with a limited computer capacity didn't have much problems installing this baby. I do have a few comments:

a) My loft is 100 feet long and at first the router was installed at one end. The other end: 15-25% reception (not acceptable.) I don't know how somebody claimed 1000 feet! Maybe they meant INCHES. But after finalising installation in the center of our loft it works 80-100% everywhere. Even on the neighbor's floor below as well as on my toilet...a totally new and exciting experience for me :-)

b) So I bought the netgear PCcard as well, from an advice that you should have same brand. It was plug in and installed in a few seconds. However, a laptop kept losing connection, very annoying and made it not dependable. The friendly support staff took a while to figure it out (about an hour). Hopefully this is not an reoccuring problem.

c) The wait for support was short, only 3 minutes.

d) This is minor, but I thought I'd mention it. The cat5 cable came with these sleeves that wouldn't allow it to plug into the back of the main computer. One of these "designer" things, totally useless. So I got a longer one anyway and threw the other one out.

I would give it 4-1/2 stars, not 5, due to that the laptop kept losing connection. But I think that problem may be solved now. Generally a nice product, its maybe a bit on the large side.

So finally I own something that looks like a spaceship.

Greetings.

I was up and running right away, but soon found some problems with the router.

1. Does not support 802.1x authentication. Make sure this is disabled.
2. Does not support multiple VPN sessions from same client whether wired or wireless. I need to VPN to 2 separate networks simultaneously from the same machine. When I connect to the second network, the router is unable to see the first network.

This is a easy to use, effective router as long as you're not doing anything too fancy. For me, it's routing capabilities are not as good as my Linux router on a floppy.

Easy setup, but no support for 802.1x authentication, December 20, 2002
By grvwsdm (Seattle, WA USA)
When I plugged it into my cable modem, it just started working immediately! No configuration needed.

However, after a few minutes, the wireless connection dropped. I reconnected and kept having the same problem. This happened even with my laptop a foot away from the router.

Tech support was not very helpful. They suggested a static IP and reinstalling the firmware, even though I had the most current version. None of this worked.

I finally tried disabling 802.1x authentication and now it stays up. This is a built-in feature only on Windows XP. Win2k has 802.1x support through a patch.

It would have been nice if tech support would have recognized this when I told them I was running XP. Looks like the only security for this router is WEP and access restriction by MAC address.

It works great now. But I was pretty close to sending it back.

I went to a wireless LAN in under 1 hour! Installed the Netgear MR814 802.11b wireless router and had two laptops and a desktop connected to the network without any problems. Able to surf the net on the laptop in the living room while watching tv-this was easy! Way cool...

I purchased this router on the recommendation of a friend(network engineer) Installation and configuration were very simple and I was on line with my new broadband connection in a short amount of time. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is thinking of going wireless!!

I wanted to share my new DSL connection with more than one computer and someone suggested a wireless router. It took me about 5 minutes to install both the router on the desktop and a wireless card in my notebook. I'm no IT genius so I was fearing the installation. It was a breeze. I've had no problems either! I would encourage everyone to purchase this product.

Wow! thats what I can say after installing and getting my network/internet operational on three laptops in 15 mins. During last five days, I spent countless hours with D-Link and LinkSys support in trying to make my home network run flawlessly. I was using D-Link DI-713P for last year and half, before it died last week when I upgraded its firmware so it won't lock up whenever I accessed internet using Windows XP. I decided to buy DI-614+ model hoping it will work better than the old one but on the contrary, I had so much trouble in setting it up that I thought I was going insane. For any changes in setup, I had to reboot my cable modem, wait two mins, reboot D-Link router, reboot my computer. It drove me nuts. To top it off, the range of wireless is extremely bad. I consistently lost signal, downstairs from my office, in living room just 30-35 feet away. The admin GUI was complicated and any time it rebooted the router, I had to go through the whole reboot sequence. I called tech support, the front line tech support guy was a novice. I am a computer professional, not really a network professional but I knew much more networking than him. Later, I got a call from "supposedly" higher line of tech support, woman had nothing else to offer except resetting the router and see if that worked.
LinkSys and Microsoft wireless routers also suffer from poor wireless signals. I didn't even bother trying Microsoft router when I read about its locking up problem. Linksys' poor wireless range, though not as bad as D-Link was unacceptable.
This wireless router from netgear has user friendly gui and various options to make the network and wireless access secure. Over that, you don't have to worry about rebooting all the devices to make any change. Its signals are great, and I am totally impressed. I had almost lost hope in all the wireless devices on the market before I used Netgear's MR-814.
My suggestion, don't even bother looking at other routers, buy this and you will be happy. It almost sounds like I am marketing for Netgear, but I would hate to see others get frustrated trying to make other products work like I did. I believe, this product will certainly fetch awards for Netgear.
