Yes, It works with a Mac!, December 19, 2002
By Byron Pugh (Ridgeland, MS United States)
My MR814 came this afternoon and it took all of 5 minutes to configure and set up. I was on the internet immediately after plugging it in to my DSL. I wasn't sure that it would work with my PowerBook G4 and the Netgear website was unclear. I asked a tech there who said it should work just fine, so I bought it. I did not even need the included CD software since I am running with an Apple AirPort card. Very satisfied so far, of course that's only after a couple of hours!

Superior Wireless router, December 17, 2002
By R. Mullin (Sioux City, IA USA)
Works great - absolutely rock solid performance. The web based setup is easy to navigate, and has plenty of built in help information. Very easy to setup your network and enable security.

Very easy to setup and have a good range also..., December 17, 2002
By arifm (Bloomington, IL United States)
This is my first wireless router and I have to say that it was the simplest and easiest setup I have ever done with routers and switches. I plugged in the power, connected the DSL modem and attached the network cable to the computer and I was online in less than a minute. I particularly liked the MAC address filtering and WEP encryption capability. I currently have 4 devices hooked up and they all work great including MR401 PC Card. Highly satisfied...

BAD Macintosh Support, December 15, 2002
By unknown
I bought this to connect Macs at home and had read that is was particularly easy to do with this router. The dhcp server was not assigning an IP address so I called tech support. First, they did try to help, but it didn't work. Since I had a Mac I would have to pay for their premium support, Windows users do not. No where on their website does it say that Mac support is extra. I ended up returning the product.

Painless, December 15, 2002
By Leonid Tunik (Somerville, MA USA)
Installation was the quickest of any computer-related product I have ever purchased, let alone any network gadget. The router seems to have a very good signal in and out of the house. Looks stylish too.

Netgear MR814, December 13, 2002

Easy to set up using Windows XP. Instruction are easy to read. The only thing I don't like about it is the WAN connection to the dsl / cable modem is 10M, not 100M. I see a little differnce in the speed when surfing the net. Wirless connection is about the same.

Great router and great price, December 12, 2002
By j_f_ligaya (Annandale, VA United States)
I have been using this MR814 router (with MA101 USB adapter) for over 2 weeks now, and things are running with no problems. The initial installation was very easy. I have a cable modem using Cox-cable as ISP; the cable company has dynamic IP addressing which made things easy. Activating WEP-encryption is also painless. Just work with passwords that are "random" but easy to remember (e.g. 12AB34CD12AB34CD...). You'll have to specify the WEP-password for each wireless-adapter that is activated.

Worked as dreamed of..., December 11, 2002
By Marc James (Long Valley, NJ United States)
I bought the MR814 last night and it took only about an hour before I had read the instructions and was up and running. The price was great with the rebates and unlike my bad experiences with Linksys, this required absolutely no configurations with IP addresses and no software. Just plugged the router in and I was online through it! I then installed the wireless Netgear adaptor software (drivers) and was up and surfing on the other computer. The signal strength is mediocre, but it beats the heck out of 28.8 and having to pay for another ISP and second phoneline!

Router Worked Great, December 9, 2002
By unknown
Followed the directions which were very simple and included plugging it in, bringing up the web page, autodetecting my DSL connection, typing in the user name and password, and I was up and running in 10 minutes. The Netgear 802.11b card was totally plug and play, it took 2 minutes to go wireless on a HP 6000 W98 and and an IBM 240X WME. No complaints

Sleek and Functional, Yet Still a Wise Choice, December 8, 2002
By Ray Jilley (The Woodlands, TX)
If you want one of the most easiest routers to set up, then I suggest you buy this great Netgear product. The router even looks good. It is silver metallic and has a nice silver grill detail on the back of it where the 4 port 10/100 intgegrated switch is located. Even the network status lights look hip with their small and minamalist design. Now to the important part. This was my first time setting up any sort of network, and after doing it, I find it very rewarding and easy with this router. After hooking up my cable connection to the uplink port, then hooking up my computer and my Xbox (with Xbox Live online gaming service) to the switch, I turned it off. Then I set up 2 more wireless computers on to it. After all was done, the router saw all of the computers and gave me options to configure it now. An absolutely excellent router for amateurs and beginners, and also for some intermediate skilled people. You'll be glad you switched to wireless!....

MR814 - Serious Timeout Problems, December 8, 2002
By Jennifer B. Hunt (Alpharetta, GA United States)
I'm using Verizon DSL with Dynamic IP address, and the MR814 loses my IP address between 2-3 times/week. I then have to power-down the router, and then restart my PCs. This is an issue that has been cited on other bulletin boards. I seriously encourage you to do more research on this before you purchase. On the plus side, the product is easy to set up with nice menus/configuration. It looks great wherever you put it.

Worked out-of-box. No configuration was required., December 8, 2002
By unknown
This is a great router. My cable company has dynamic IP and no passwords. I just had to connect this router between my cable modem and computer and plug in the power. It did not require any configuration.I also bought a wireless PC card for my laptop. That worked too without any issues. I installed the driver as suggested and that was it. My computer has Windows 95 and the laptop has WIndows 2000. ... I have the router in the basement and can take my laptop any place in my two storey house.

Simply Great, December 8, 2002

i connected the router, powered up, it detected PPPoE stuff pretty quickly. Changed my PC LAN settings to get its ip address from dhcp, and i was on the internet. Edited basic stuff in the Wireless section, setup WEP 128-bit key....got on my laptop which is a XP-Pro with Aironet wireless card...configured a new profile in ACU, and was a "go" for the internet within no time. Very simple, reliable and easy to setup stuff, at an awesome price. - KK

Apple Airport Base Station Alternative, December 7, 2002
By LarryAOL (Naperville, IL USA)
I have an Apple iBook with an Airport card. I bought this Netgear Router for 1/4 the price of the Apple Airport base station and it was plug-n-play! Using MacOS X there is no software to install. You use Internet Explorer with a HTML-based "wizard" to help you configure the Mac and change the router's settings. You do have to make some changes in the Network System Preference panel. I created two new "Locations," one for an Ethernet connection to the router, and another for an Airport wireless connection.

Outstanding exterior design and user interface, December 7, 2002
By Stuart M. Norton (Mountain View, CA United States)
I have tried two other wireless routers and have found that the NetGear MR814 to be an outstanding product. The first thing you will notice is the sleek and pleasant design. This router can be proudly displayed next to your computer (or family pictures) and not hidden away under desk. The router can be placed both vertically (with an included stand) or horizontally. However, getting past the cosmetics, you will find the installation guide and help features of this router to be just as pleasing as the exterior. The folks at NetGear did an excellent job in making the router easy to set up for ANY skill level. All of the features (security etc.) are explained in simple (but not moronic) terms that are easy to follow and quick to implement.

Firmware bugs, slows outlook and close connection for telnet, December 6, 2002
By yh_wu@yahoo.com (CT)
If you just use internet explorer, outlook express, the router is OK. But please read the following firmware errors I found and discussed with a senior technicion.1. I am using SSL(port 995) for outlook express. The securing process is much slower than when I was using the D-Link DI-704P router. The technician said it was because of the biult-in firewall in the router. 2. In a telnet, ssh window, if you just idle for a few minutes, the connection will be closed. He said that it was also because of the firewall that will close the connection when it detects idling. He said there is no way you can turn off the firewall. 3. I installed the software firewall, and I found it not very customarizable and you may not be able to open a specific port such as port 6000 for X11. The speed is fine. Even a junior technician told me it is 10M half Duplex. My conclusion is that you shouldn't buy it if you use telnet, ssh, or telnetd, sshd. If you don't use them, it is a OK router.

flawless install, December 5, 2002
By unknown
This router installed beautifully w/ my Motorola Cable modem and Win XP Pro. I didn't need the install software and in fact I didn't have to change any software settings in XP since it configures itself. This puppy just works!I also need a router to use w/ my XBox Live service and this works just fine. I recommend this to anyone looking for a quality WiFi router.

Great Product, December 4, 2002
By unknown
I bought the MR814 along with the MA401 wireless card. Had it up and running in 15 mins on my Compaq presario laptop with Win 2000. Range and signal strength are great so far, and I dont have a 2.4 Ghz phone, so no worries on that front. I like the 128 bit security and free firewall license as well. I am planning to shift to XP in some time, and I'm hoping I won't have too many problems with that. Great product for the ultra cheap price, though.

Great Value, December 3, 2002
By secretmak (Los Angeles, CA)
The Netgear MR814 is a great value for this price range. This router took almost no configuring to set up. I have 3 desktops (win 98se, win2k) plugged into the ethernet ports and 2 laptops (win 98, mac os x) and 2 pocket pcs connected wirelessly with 128bit encryption. My only complaints are that it doesn't have SPI for better security, but it does come with firewall software for PCs (but there is no version for Macintosh). Also, there is no built in print server. If you are looking for these features check out the SMC SMC7004VWBR Barricade Wireless 4-Port Cable/DSL Router. Overall, the ease of setup and flexibility make it one of the best values in it's price range.
