| Description: |
| Netgear WG511 802.11g Wireless PC Card - When using the Internet, you have the ability to freely roam websites with ease. However, accessing this vast network of information is still a wire-based affair. You must be at a fixed location, tethered to the wall, like a dog on a leash. Now with 802.11 wireless technology, that connection has been severed, allowing you to wirelessly access both the Internet, and other computers wherever you choose. This 802.11g PC Card fits into your laptop's PCMCIA slot, allowing it to connect to any 802.11g, or 802.11b wireless access point within range. |

Good bang-for-the-buck, July 17, 2008
By user (Plano, TX)
I'm happy with this purchase. My very old laptop (HP Pavilion ZE4145) does not have WiFi built in and for the past two years, I've been using an Airlink 101 USB Wireless dongle. This PCMCIA card picks up more signals and is more secure on my laptop than any USB dongle could be. The software is ok, but I had difficulty entering a WEP password for use with my router. No problem, I just let Windoze control the card and it works exactly as I need.
In all, the card picks up weak signals, provides a solid physical connection to my laptop, and performs exactly as I had hoped.

Solid, but slow..., June 30, 2008
By user (Minnesota)
It's a reliable card, and for the price, you can't go wrong. By slow, I mean the bundled Netgear network "sniffing" software (program that finds and connects to networks) takes its sweet time connecting to a network. It took 30 seconds to connect to a Netgear router, while my Mac's AirPort Extreme connected in under 5 seconds. But the Netgear software was more reliable than the Windows supplied program on the ThinkPad it went into, so I guess you win some and lose some.

NetGear WG511, March 26, 2008

I generally have the worse luck with wireless cards, but this on is great. It seams to be well built and sturdy and I have not had any problems with it. I would recommend this car to anyone

Broken After 2 Weeks, November 18, 2007
By user (san francisco)
Worked well for 2 weeks. It was connected to my laptop, which was running Ubuntu Linux, though I doubt that was the problem in this case. During its life, I noticed that it was running on the hot side. That might have been the factor in its death.
I purchased the card refurbished with a warranty for about $20. After it broke, I did not want to go through the bother of contacting their customer service department and following their frustrating return process. For $20, I am not going to cry about it.
My final thoughts: After so many failures of my purchased Netgear equipment, I don't believe I will ever be buying their stuff any more. It might have been that the card was faulty, but in the scope of all the Netgear equipment that I have bought in the past couple of years, almost all of them were faulty or were buggy (except for when Netgear built quality units with the blue steel casings... Netgear has really gone downhill quickly).

Netgear 802.11g, November 15, 2007
By user
Netgear continues to impress me, the product installed quickly and painlessly. I'm no computer geek, but I can find my way around pretty well and I didn't even have to open the instructions.
It works with my 802.11b access point with no issues what so ever.
Another Great Netgear product!

easy WiFi, November 7, 2007
By user (San Diego)
Software was easy to insall on my laptop. To use, simply plug in the card to your laptop & power up. Worked automatically to find a signal and I was on the web first try.

great speed, November 2, 2007
By user (Minnesota, USA)
Works great in "Hot Spots" - always get a least 80% signal strength with 11Mbps conection, and in my home office with NETGEAR WG614 router/access point - within 50 metres 90-95% signal strength through 3 walls with 54Mbps connection! It's hot-swappable, good-looking and secure (128-bit encription) + WEP!

More Than What You Pay For!, July 5, 2007
By user (Detroit, MI)
Works great right out of the box for me. Set up done and the card was working in a couple of minutes. Range is so so but this is a very functional unit. If you need a wireless card for your laptop and don't have much cash then get one.

Works better than most others, June 3, 2007
By user (Hawaii)
I've learned a while back that the wireless connection is more temperamental then wired and the signal a lot weaker and more prone to interruptions. This pretty much is a fact regardless of which adapter you put in and the difference between a B and G is almost unnoticeable. The netgear is one of a few that is backward compatible with older operating systems. I use it on an older Sony laptop running WIN 98 and the connection is good most of the times. Hard to beat it for the price.

Great Wireless, May 29, 2007
By user (Phoenix, AZ)
If you own the Netgear router for this card so that your network supports MIMO then you are going to love this card. I had some issues with the software until I realized that I needed to bypass the setup CD and get the drivers on the internet to resolve many issues. After I got it up and running then I've been gettin 108Mps through out the house on both floors and every corner. I was using a linksys before, but the MIMO seems to be the place to be until they get the "N" technology out in the market full force.

I have never had any problems with product., April 6, 2007

This has worked very well for me. I have no frame of reference as to how a different model might work in comparison, but this model always worked perfectly.

Weak Signal, March 31, 2007
By user (Poteau, OK)
Don't know if it's the card or the wireless router but have a weak room-to-room signal. Changing channels on wireless router and doing a router upgrade as offered by Netgear tech support did not help. Tech suppport did offer additional phone support which I have not pursued.

Doesn't work with my Winows 98 Micron laptop, March 14, 2007
By user (Silver Spring, MD USA)
Despite saying it is compatible wth W 98, mine won't work. It won't complete loading the software and drivers. I don't have any similar problems with other peripherals or software, so I assume it is a problem inherent with this product.

Not Compatible with Jornada Handheld PC as advertised, March 9, 2007
By user
Unable to get the software to speak to the computer despite numerous attempts alone. Even support service on their website has been unable to help me resolve this problem. How do we go about returning this item? It is completely useless to us. Thank you

Not for IBM thinkpads, February 13, 2007
By user (Bay Area, CA)
I found out that this card is incompatible with IBM thinkpads. They will not run on IBM's thinkpads. See Netgear's website regarding this issue. Their solution did not fix the problem.

Smooth Install, Great Range, February 5, 2007
By user (HOUSTON, TX USA)
Installed smoothly and worked right away. Has better range than the built in Centrino system on a different laptop. Installed this in an older Dell laptop (P3 850 MHz) running Windows 2000 Professional.
