Use it as an access point..., June 23, 2007
By Wellcraft19 (Pacific NorthWest)
I used to like Netgear. Great products with excellent design.
But, after moving to VoIP we need a stable firewall/router, one that just works w/o any questions or hickups.
The WGB511 I tried meet those (simple) demands. It sort of "hung" unexplainably when you most needed it. A switch to another WGB511 and later an upgrade to a newer version of WGB511 did not help.
It seemed to happen the same time Netgear went for more "design" and consumer product orientation, leaving their stoic, but realiable, blue metal boxes behind.

I eventually put the Linksys that vonage had provided at the "entry", replacing the Netgear, and it has been running now for over 2 years w/o any issues.
However, the Netgear works great as an accesspoint where reliability is not as important, but I tend to use WiFi as little as I can since the house is fully wired.

Sometimes it works, some times it doesn't., March 24, 2007

When the router is working, it works beautifully. It seems that the router will eventually just stop allowing connections (possibly due to overheating). The fix is to just turn it off and back on. The wireless card bundled with the router also seems to be a little finicky. You would think that the card would work perfectly with the router, but it does not. The software that comes with the wireless card isn't great, but it can do the job. All in all, you get what you pay for.

Contrary to popular belief, I even had a good experience the one time I needed technical support. A few random disconnects, but overall a great product.

NETGEAR WORKS BETTER THAN IMAGINED, February 26, 2007
By Chance B. Reynolds
THIS ROUTER WORKS GREAT NO MATTER WEATHER HARD WIRED OR WIRELESS. I CAN GO ANYWHERE IN MY HOUSE UPSTAIRS OR DOWNSTAIRS AND ONLY LOSE ONE BAR ON THE STRENGTH. I AM ALWAYS CONNECTED STRONG AND NO UNTIMELY WAITING FOR LOADUPS.

Lousy card, lousy router, loust deal, February 2, 2007
By Kevin J. Carne
Read the reviews, ordered the deal, got burned. The card is garbage, drops in and out, the router drops in and out, then fried a fews days later. Back to Linkysys for now.

    Easy Installation, February 1, 2007
By Michele L. Eidam
I can't believe how easy this was to install and add additional computers to the network. I've struggled before with other brands, but this was so easy I thought I was doing something wrong.

I received this kit as a birthday present from my son, and have been extremely pleased. I was absolutely delighted with the ease of installation, and very pleased with the its use.

A great combo with a cheap price, January 12, 2007
By Sifu (New York,NY)
I went to Com USA to buy Links and the price was double than this ones. Netgear is built a best stuff. I really enjoy it everytime I use my old laptop. I always get an excellent signal around my apartment event when I took it to travel I always get a good signal.

So far, so good, January 11, 2007

So far, this networking kit is working wonderfully (about 3 weeks since purchase). The installation was very straightforward, and the whole thing was up and running within 20 minutes. I would recommend this product for anyone who is looking for an affordable and easy wireless home network system.

Second Netgear Wireless Router...no problems, January 9, 2007
By Joel Dauteuil (Bethlehem, NH USA)
I like Netgear. I've never had any problems with their routers. This one was perfect for a 4 PC home office with one printer and one Packet8 VoIP.

I've never had any range issues - and I've used it in multiple home and apartment settings over the past 3 years.

I've recommended to friends as well and none have reported any issues to me. Solid product. Performs as promised - that's all I ask for.

    Great Value, January 3, 2007

This is the first set of wireless networking equipment that I have bought, so I have no other brands to compare; however, the setup went fairly well. You have to study the directions for setting up the wireless hub. I had difficulty installing the wireless card on the laptop, but that was only because it was on Linux, which is not yet supported by the manufacturer. There was plenty of help in getting that working on the internet forums. After getting everything set up, the equipment works very well providing me with internet connectivity throughout the house (and even in the back yard). The only problem that I ever encounter is that after shutting down the hub, you have to first power up the DSL or cable router for 2 minutes, then turn on the wireless hub and run it for one minute before regaining full functionality (this is mentioned in the directions). Other than that, this product does not give me any problems.

Will not work with SBC modem, January 1, 2007
By Harold E. Proctor
The wireless card works fine in a laptop however the Router will not work with an SBC modem. The router has the same IP address as the modem which makes it impossible to address. So it is no good if you have an SBC high speed connection with their modem. Tech support has been less than helpful since they don't speak much english. They work from a list that has very little to do with the problem. I don't recommend that anyone with SBC hight speed internet purchase this product.

This combo works flawlessly. I get about a 2 block range from this and my router is in a mobile home. Never had any problems with it.

I have found this brand quite reliable and the software is a snap. the range is decent enough.and it isnt expensive. not the cheapest, but great overall. no luck with smc and d-link. linksys is too expensive.

Router setup easily (I know something about computers but not networks.) I've had it for a while and it has performed extremely well. My laptop has a great signal anywhere in the house.

    Netgear Router, January 2, 2006
By Wu-Tang_Assassin (California)
This is a good router. I have it set up in my room. And it reaches the other computer alright. The other computer has a decent connection, not good or bad, but decent. So this router is alright. I just use it for the other computer, this computer and to plug my Xbox 360 into for Live.

If you want a decent router, this is it.

I've had a lot of trouble with this, September 23, 2005
By Husband, Father, Catholic, Finance Professor, Portfolio Manager, and High Priest of NuclearPhynance (Ile de France)
I've had a lot of trouble with this, and even after walking around the house with my laptop and placing the unit every possible location, I have lots of dead spots, and frequently when I'm using it it drops off.

I know it is the netgear broadcast base and not the laptop, because the laptop interface works fine everywhere else I use it.

I tested the stability of the wireline signal to my house (my brother-in-law is a telephony engineering geek), and it was fine. Again, Netgear is clearly the culprit.

It works great if you are in the same room, or in the next room in a thin-walled apartment, but otherwise, not very robust, and certainly does not live up to the specifications.

    Don't Answer That Call!, September 10, 2005
By C. Cole (North Carolina, USA)
Ok router but we lose our connection when we answer the 900mhz cordless phone. Works fine at 40 feet from router. Haven't tried it further out. Good deal for $35 after rebate.

Excellent product. Easy setup, September 3, 2005
By Leo (NC, USA)
The wireless kit works perfectly. Setup was as easy as ABC. The router also comes with some security features which should be sufficient for most peoples. The coverage is good too, I can receive near to 100% signal at second floor (router at first floor).
