    DONT BUY!, April 22, 2006
By Jim Honsberger
i bought this router hoping to get signal range improvement over
my current belkin 54g router. i tested the router and had no improvement at all. in fact ,this router in no way has 1000% better coverage as marketed by netgear than my regular g router.trust me this is not even close to being true. my house is about 3000 sq ft.,so large but not enormous.there appears to be firmware problems as well. if you have a mixed b and g devices environment like i so (old laptops and g wireless media servers) the performance is awful . very slow. my son tried to do some gaming off of his laptop and it would freeze.
cnet did some tests in a mixed b anf g environment and performance dropped greatly compared to an all g environment.so be warned if you have a mixed group like i do.this is not the router for you.wait for a good n router

This product has been good for couple of years already. easy to setup and a lot of feature for the price. Just a reminder, if the dsl modern has a router integrated like verizon's, make sure it does not have the same IP than the netgear, because it won't work. You will have to change it in your dsl modem first. I highly recomend this Dsl router. the AP range is pretty good also.

Mediocre product with terrible support, April 13, 2006
By R. Kooistra (Chicago, IL)
Not as easy to install as some of the techies around this site seem to think, at least in my experience. Took a whole lot longer and more effort than alleged, and yes, I read a lot of the reviews here for tips, which saved time, but certainly didn't solve the problem.

Now that it's working, it's OK. It needs re-booting way more often than it should, and drops the signal too often, but you probably cannot expect top of the line quality at this price.

However, you should be able to expect some level of acceptable support. You will not be getting that with this, or I'd wager, any Netgear product. I'd look elsewhere. I've never used a Linksys product before, but after this experience, they'll be getting a shot at my business, since Netgear will never, ever get another order from me.

Great Router if the one you have is working fine., April 9, 2006

The NetGear "not-so-SmartWizard" used for installation requires an Internet connection to work. Brilliant! If I had a working Internet connection I'd be using it!

After borrowing a working router to use while I installed this one, the "Wizard" was apparently confused by my complex network of two PCs, one Mac, and a printer. After three "start from scratch" attempts it finally decided to grace me by completing the installation successfully.

So, if your network is functioning perfectly, this is the router for you. If not, consider something else.

Doesnt get any better!, April 5, 2006

Great router. Easy installation. Cheap price. Fast wireless and wires speeds. Made well. Nice white color matches my Mac perfectly.

My network has one iMac G5 and 2 WIndows latops connected wirelessly. The router is connected wired to the dsl modem and all machines exsist without problems at all. Great value. Why pay 79 dollars for a Linksys that does exactly the same thing as this router. Not to mention the Linksys is 3 or 4 times the size of this nice and compact router? Nice color and design make this a great addtion to any real-estate challenged desk or table.

Wouldnt buy any other router than this one. Top notch. Also has 24-7 phone support if you ever have problems.

I recently purchased this item along with the Netgear WGE111 54 Mbps Wireless Game Adapter and I can honestly say, the product is great. You'll be hard pressed to find a Router that is as easy to use while still being reliable and affordable.

The actual router itself is quite small so it doesn't draw any attention to itself. You have the option of sitting it on it's bottom, or stacking it with the bracket-stands boxed with the item. The dimensions are a little under 12"x10"x4", which in real life terms is about as thick as two DVD cases stacked on eachother.

Setup was as easy as running the CD software and plugging in the wires. The setup took around 10 minutes altogether, and the software itself doesn't force you upload any unnecessary programs. I was actually amazed that I ran into no problems on the setup.

The room in which this device resides is filled with many other high tech devices that might interfere with the reception: cordless phone, networked printer, home entertainment center, home pc, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse etc etc, and I've had no signs of lag, nor have I been disconnected once.

I was really worried about my first endeavor into the wireless online front, and thanks to Netgear's great products, I can play & surf with peace of mind.

Installation problems out the wazzo, March 27, 2006
By J. Yohn (PA)
the softwear provided by netgear did not do its job. i had to speak call Netgears service (which turned out to be a huge hassel). if it were not for the phone service i would not have been able to get this router connected and working, granted i am only an intermediate computer user, so i know how to get things rolling, but this softwear didnt get me anywhere.

but after the half hour of being on hold the man helping me was very helpful in plunching in numbers that the softwear never suggested.

it works great now that i have it hooked up, but the installation was rather exhausting.

I like this! It is small, and the color and design are pleasing to the eye. After doing some research it came down to a router by LinkSys or Netgear. I went with Netgear because of the price.

When I actually require wireless connectivity, my setup consists of a DSL connection feeding into the router, a PowerMac G4 connected to one of the ports on the switch, and a LinkSys 802.11g PCMCIA card in my Macintosh Powerbook G4. We live in a 2-bedroom apartment (about 950 square feet) with the router in one of the rooms, and reception is strong everywhere. I would imagine that in a typical house reception would be adequate.

It is very easy to set up--just make sure you actually read the directions ahead of time. Follow the recommendations provided by the manufacturer, in particular about where/how to place it to minimize interference and increase reception.

I've seen elsewhere in reviews people saying that this doesn't work with SBC/Yahoo DSL. That's what I have, and it works fine.

I had one difficulty between MacOS X and the router. When configuring the router for wireless encryption (I use 128-bit) the key is required to be in hexadecimal. You can specify a key in hexadecimal directly, or specify a key in ASCII, and the router will automatically generate a hex key from it. People typically specify a key in ASCII, as it's easier to remember an ASCII key. I generated a key for the router, but apparently the method used by the router to generate the hex key from the ASCII is different from the method used by MacOS X, as I cannot connect to the router using the ASCII key. I can connect if I enter the hex key directly. I consider this to be a minor problem.

I spent a long time reading other people's Wireless Router reviews before finally deciding to purchase the Netgear WGR614. Now that I've been using this router for 1 month I thought I should return the favor and log my own review.

This is a great router, installation was easy, configuration is well documented and interactive. I've been using it wirelessly and cabled on a Windows XP PC and a Mac without any problems. Extra bonus, unlike a lot of routers out there, this one looks good.

If you're looking for something you can love, go Netgear.

Upgraded from a Netgear MR814 (b) to this. Increased my range by double. Super easy to setup and use, now I only wish my TIVO supported WPA instead of just WEP.

This product is a very good buy. I brought it and replaced my old wireless router. The speed is amazing and there is no packet loss. The hooks provided are helpful to keep the router steady.
Overall I recommend to buy this product.

Bajo precio, buen rendimiento, facil instalacion, March 21, 2006
By Sabas Monroy Martinez (San Salvador, El Salvador)

A worthless piece i have bought and still regretting that decision. It often disconnects while browsing and wont connect for another 20-30 mins. I think it has some problem with the firmware. Planning to buy a better brand.

Easy to set up and use. However, occasionally, there are problems when 2 or more computers are connected to this wirelessly. A message may come up while surfing saying "Page Not Found". On reloading the page, this usually goes away. This also works very well for VPN connections. Other users connected to it are unaffected and tehy can still surf the web while the VPN connection is on.
