Description:
Netgear WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router with 4-Port Switch - The amount of homes with high-speed Internet access and multiple computers is growing steadily. Wouldn't it be nice to share that high-speed Internet connection with all of the computers in your home? Wouldn't it be great to also share files between your computers? And wouldn't it be amazing if you could do all of that wirelessly!? Well you can, with this 802.11g Wireless Router. Just add optional 802.11g, or 802.11b, adapters to each computer, connect your modem, run through the easy installation process, and you're ready to go. It even supports the slower 802.11b wireless protocol for increased compatibility. VPN pass-through

don't bother with this router, October 28, 2007
By Ms. Do-Gooder
I consider myself somewhat sophisticated when it comes to setting up wireless routers. This one is a waste of time and might leave you very frustrated. After several attempts, the CD only got me so far. No troubleshooting available. And if you want to call a number for customer service, they'll charge you a fee!!!

Great router or college, October 27, 2007
By Graham Bratzel (Seattle WA)
This is a great router for a college student. The signal is just as fast as when I'm plugged into the wall. It's small and out of the way, and when in the right place, it can go through apt walls to all my rooms. It was very easy to set up, and it has enough advanced settings to keep my signal very safe. I named my signal something obscure, disabled the SSID broadcast so it doesn't appear on wardrivers' lists, and instead of an old WEP password, I use the WPA, which is supposedly faster, more secure, and old systems can't even use it. I can even limit the MAC address of the users to just me or visitors. With such a small footprint and great features, I love this router.

stopped working, October 24, 2007
By J. Bright
worked fine for a couple of years, but it stopped working recently. i've tried a bunch of things to reset it, with no luck. maybe its time warner cable's fault (fyi: brooklyn, ny), but i doubt it, since it seems a lot of other people have had problems. i'm going to get a new one that is hopefully more reliable. p.s. mine is model "v6".

Dropped connections easily fixed, October 24, 2007
By Al (Seattle WA)
Solid performer, never dropped a connection until I started to broadcast SSID. I switched off the SSID broadcast two nights ago, and no more dropped connections!! I suspect the resetting is a defensive measure to prevent hackers from trying too many times to log in to your router.
If you live in a dense urban area, after you set up all you Wi-Fi devices, you should log into yout router and uncheck the SSID broadcast option.

Netger Wgr614 v6 troublesome, October 23, 2007
By Hibernia
I used this product for 18 months and had in for technical support 4-5 times because the product keeps flaking out. The last time I called, I had to pay $36 because the 90 day warranty had run out, and the problem was never resolved. Basically, I have to pitch the thing and buy a new router.

I was not able to install the wireless setup for the router, so currently I am using it as a wired router. Try reinstalling it multiple times, and cudnt get much help from sustomer care either.

I set it up following the instructions and it all seemed to work right out of the box. It does everything I expect it to.

Hopelessly unreliable, September 25, 2007
By L. Schoening
I set this router up - easily, as everyone said - and the connection worked for two weeks and then started crashing. In the last two weeks I have spent more than 6 hours on the phone with netgear; none of the techs are able to stabilize the connection. Hopelessly unreliable, and no consistent support or suggestions to do anything other than fiddle with its settings. It's going back, and I would not recommensd it to anyone who actually wants to use their internet connection.

Very User Friendly, September 19, 2007
By Psychocrow
This router was very painless to get up and running. I had no experience with routers or networking before this and needed a product that would perform as I needed it too. Very happy with its function, will consider more hardware from Netgear in the future.

Good product to buy, September 18, 2007
By gopi (OH, USA)
Easy to install. Works better. Once in a while i wld have to restart. I noticed the connection speed becomes low when I connect thru wireless when compare to connecting directly to the modem using network card. When you set the WEP key, it always works only for the first key that was generated. I guess this is the bug in the s/w inside.

Gets the job done!, September 17, 2007
By Matthew Orton (San Diego, CA)
I've had this router for nearly 6 months and it continues to work perfectly. With all the hype about wireless n (which is still a dream) and mimo technology, it's easy to get sucked into buying a router that you really don't need. If all you are using the router for is to share an internet connection, this is the perfect solution. It is very easy to setup and it also looks really nice.
There are no internet connections available that transfer faster than 54mbps. These new wireless technologies that promise 256mbps transfer rates are only useful for serious home networking, and in most cases, they don't even do what they promise. Plus, they require expensive add on equipment (new wireless cards, etc.). If you want a great router that lives up to the promises on its box, buy this product.

Experience of one months, September 15, 2007
By S. Aithal
I have been using this product for one month, it has hardly given me any trouble. We have four laptops at home, it works well with all of them but occasionally it stops working but it recovers back nevertheless, for around 40$ this is a decent deal.

Netgear is still solid., September 13, 2007
By ~Republikid (Red State, USA)
I have an old 4 port hub from netgear that I bought in 2000. I have kicked this thing across the room and it has fallen off my desk unto hardwood more times than I can count. It still works. I have one of these new netgear wireless routers and it works great. When installing my microwave internet at the house I tried a brand new Linksys router and a slightly used D-link wireless router. Both of them simply did not work on my network. Tried for hours with the techs from the internet company and myself to get these things working. They simply would not work. This netgear was turned on and it just worked. Go figure. If it blows up in 30 days like some say it does I will be disappointed but I bought the extended warranty so whatever.

Do not buy, September 6, 2007
By xbzz (CA USA)
Many dropped connections for wireless. Hang for wired connection (about 2 times a week). Have to recycle the power to get it working again.

Problems, August 31, 2007
By fotomaniak (United States)
Internet stops working once in a while for both corded and wireless connections. Turing the router off and back on solves the problem.

If it fails, the support is awful., August 26, 2007
By R. Ault
I bought one of these last November on the strength of good results from a Netgear purchase several years previous. It was a mistake. After 9 months in service, the router suddenly stopped connecting to the modem. I spent nearly two hours on the phone with Netgear's tech support, while they had me swap cables around and try various things that didn't fix it, at the end of which we had verified that the internet port was no longer capable of connecting to my modem. The tech didn't offer to issue a return authorization, but promised me that a higher-level tech would call me back as soon as one was available.
Five days later, I got an email (NOT a phone call) telling me to do exactly the same things that hadn't worked before, and assuring me that this would fix it. The email explicitly said that I should email back if there was any additional problem, but a reply to the From: address promptly bounced, and no other email address was given in the message. Trying to get Netgear's attention by submitting a Follow-up on their website has been equally unproductive.
I've been without a router for over a week, and Netgear still hasn't made any effort to offer a replacement or a fix. I've had it with Netgear at this point; I'm going to buy a different brand as a replacement, and sell whatever exchange they send me (if I finally get one) as a used unit with no warranty.

Worked ok for 1 1/2 years, then died, August 26, 2007
By Domestic Goddess (Northern CA)
We bought this Netgear WGR614 router back in March 2006. It installed somewhat easily and except for a little problem with the wireless PC card for the laptop (wouldn't be recognized at first but easily corrected) we had pretty stable use for about a year. Then we began to have connection problems. The connection would get slower and slower until internet pages would just not load, resulting in repeated "page cannot be displayed" errors. Powering down and restarting the router, modem and computer seemed to correct the issue. But as of this morning the router appears to have completely died. Powering down and restarting does nothing, the internet connection cannot be re-established. We can connect the desktop directly to the cable modem but for now the laptop is without connection, making for some unhappy family members here.
As of right now I don't know if we'll be buying another Netgear router & wireless PC card. The life expectancy of Netgear products does not appear to be all that great. Looking at some of the reviews we appear to be quite lucky that we got as much time out of the router as we did. Still I'm not in the mood to be shopping for a new router every 1.5 years or less. Hopefully there is a good router out there that can last at least two years.
