Wouldn't it be nice to share that high-speed Internet connection with all of the computers in your home? Wouldn't it be great to also share files between your computers? And wouldn't it be amazing if you could do all of that wirelessly!? Well you can, with this 802.11g Wireless Router. Just add optional 802.11g, or 802.11b, adapters to each computer, connect your modem, run through the easy installation process, and you're ready to go.     Easy Installation and Good Range, August 16, 2007
By Brian (Tulsa, OK)
This router was easy for me to install and set up. I am fairly experienced in setting up computer equipment so I don't know if it will be easy for someone with little or no experience with networking. However, the instrustions were fairly straight forward.

I get really good range from this router. I can get a really good signal in my 2 story, 3000 sq. ft. house.

Works great for Macs, August 16, 2007
By Craig Rudick (Cleveland, OH United States)
My household uses this router to wirelessly connect to two Mac laptops and a Nintendo Wii. It was extremely simple to set up, and we have had no major issues since. Connection speeds are generally quite good even one or two rooms away, although if you are all the way across the house there is a bit of a slowdown, but nothing major. We have had the router for over a month and we have never had any issues with a dropped signal or inability to connect. Several of our friends have brought their laptops to our house and are able to connect within seconds. Overall, I am very happy with both the price and quality. Also, I know that there is always a bit of a question about compatability of routers with Macs, but like I said, we are a Mac household and have had no troubles.

Router is good .. but it sometimes drops the connection. Though this happens very rarely.. Overall i will say this is a good router according to its price tag. I will give 7 of 10 for this router.

Poor Product: Poor Customer Service, August 9, 2007
By G. William Lockhart (San Antonio, TX United States)
I have a current Netgear router and thought I would buy another one. What a mistake. Product works for about 30 minutes then it freezes. Have to unplug and plug back in. Call tech support to ask for a Return Number. On hold for 45 minutes. Won't give me a Return number. Says send them an email. Attempted to send email. Email Error. Summary: Bad product; Bad support. Do NOT Buy.

This is the 2nd netgear wireless router I've bought. (This one was for my parents.) Product is great...even the look is nicer now!

Unexciting, but solid & reliable, July 24, 2007
By R. Mitchell (Delaware)
I fix computers for a living, so I see about five or six dead cable routers per month. Many brands -- and I'm not naming names here -- are so unreliable that their "half-life" is about 8 months. I had so many routers fail under warranty that I tell the customers to buy their own router for me to install: I lose the profit, but I avoid the warranty work.
When I simply must buy and resell a router, it's usually a Netgear WGR614. It's reliable, versatile, and easy to configure. I can set it up as a router or an access point, and my favorite feature is that the wireless radio is turned OFF by default: other brands establish an unsecured WLAN as soon as you plug them in.
If you're looking for high speed and gaming features, surf the other reviews. If you want a router that just works, buy a Netgear WGR614. I sell them, and I'm writing this review over one.

    works great, July 24, 2007
By Mike from Vernon (Vernon, CT USA)
I was able to connect to the unit with my Linux box and configure it without a problem. I actually am using it behind an existing Netgear router, currently used for my wired network, and it is working great!

This wireless router is great. The step by step instructions makes it easy for it to set-up. The signal is great, I haven't lost a internet connection yet!!

Tech support problems. Reliability issues., July 11, 2007
By Tech Lawyer (Washington, DC)
Great router when it works... I used it in Miami with Atlantic Broadband. Had some problems with setup, useless Setup Wizard. Contacted tech support in Bangalore, had trouble understanding the guy, but eventually got the router working ok. Only problem then: sometimes the router just stops working, then you have to power cycle the modem and router, but I always got it to work again.

Until I moved to DC and tried to set it up with Comcast. No luck. Called tech support. So far I've spent over 8 hours working on this thing (including 5 hours with Indian tech support). First, I can't understand the Indian accents (my Indian friend can't understand them either, the VOIP connection's not so good either). These tech support guys are really nice and try hard, but they can't fix the router. Netgear only gives you 1 tech support call with the warranty, so I went ahead and paid 65 more for the extended tech support, but still no dice. I'm giving these guys one more chance, then I'm going to get a new router and ask for a refund. We'll see.

If someone had told me all this, I would not have bought this router. Neither should you.

By coho (Seattle)
The instructions were simple, it took about twelve minutes to set up (monkeys or rats could easily be trained to do this) and has required no other attention.

The wireless signal is excellent throughout the house, even on the deck, and holds right at 54.0 Mbps.

Well worth forty bucks.

    Troubled Product, July 3, 2007
By Ben Woods (Cleveland, OH)
I've bought 2 of these over the last 2 years or so. Two major problems exist:

1 - Connecting to an SBC (ATT) DSL router is a major pain - requires excessive configuration of the router and DSL modem.

2 - Each died in about a year -I bought the second to replace the first. And after about a year, it's developed an annoying buzz (short?) and doesn't accept any new hardware.

Summary - I'm done with Netgear - will be looking for a new router.

Died in under a year., July 2, 2007
By Consummate Consumer (Los Angeles)
When this router worked, it was fine. But there were several times when it didn't work, and the first line of telephone support in India was utterly unable to help. Eleven months after first installing it, it was only intermittently able to connect to the internet, it repeatedly rejected the painstakingly re-programmed password, and finally emitted a low, high-pitched whine. After days of fighting to restore the router to proper working order with expert help, I threw in the towel, bought an Apple Airport Express and installed it in 5 minutes to perfect working order. I most certainly will not buy another NetGear product.

I had to configure router and change its IP address so that it could work with my DSL modem. Always fun, but the tech support people guided me through it.

Router fails at 3 months, June 22, 2007
By smilesdl (Burlington,Ma USA)
I bought this router for its wireless and wired capabilities and price.
But after 2 months started losing connection intermittently. I did the troubleshooting and work a few times more... a month later:
Again to start the same:
- lose connection
- automatic test in the router is activated
- connection is still lost
- connection is restored (1 or 2 minutes)
I checked for firmware upgrade, I did this, and reset router and other config details
but the problem still continue and as the 3months warranty expired.
It is router is gone...
And customer service completely hides their email address.
I would not buy a Netgear product again

    Very pleased, June 8, 2007

I've had it about two months. Easy to set-up and adjust configuration, excellent signal quality in my very small apartment, and hasn't gone down, needed reboot, or had any other problems since I started using it two months ago.

Not for Apple, June 8, 2007
By Gerald G. Blake
Don't bother with this thing if you have an Apple. The software that comes with it has a wizard for Windows but it leaves you hanging with a manual install for Apple, and you need all the crazy numbers that only an IT person would know. Never could get it to work so sent it back and got a Belkin, still had some problems but it has features that will work with an Apple and no numbers required.

Awesome product. No problems setting up or using. Thanks for the fast delivery as well.

Beware if you use a separate VPN client ..., June 4, 2007
By dmcheng (Washington, DC United States)
I had a WGR614v6 with firmware 1.0_13 that worked fine with my VPN client software, but when I upgraded the firmware to 2.0 the VPN connections no longer worked. (connection failed during phase 2 negotiation.) I had to downgrade to 1.0_11 to get VPN connectivity back.

I bought a WGR614v7 for another site and found that it won't work with my VPN client either. I'm using a Macbook Intel OS X with Equinux VPN Tracker 4.9.1.

I opened a case with Netgear and they have supposedly escalated to their engineering group, but I haven't heard back.

Apart the VPN issues, I've found the units to be very reliable and easy to work with.

it works, no problems, May 28, 2007
By C. Boyle (Alexandria, va United States)
I have set up 6-7 wifi networks over the last 4 years. Between bad quality hardwear and worse documentation, it has been a major pain. My Linksys wifi router crapped out for no known reason (they all fail eventually), so I went to Bestbuy and picked this one up. Also 2 Tivo wifi g thingies to replace the B ones I had. And a Netgear print server (g also). Now I have no more b devices, which drag all other g devices down to their speed. Thought about going to N, but my laptops would need new wifi, which I don't want to mess with.

The netgear router installed fairly easily. Using the wizard setup threw it off my cable modem when it rebooted. Just did the manual process and it worked fine.

Now I have 2 printers, 2 laptops and 2 desktops, and 3 Tivo boxes all on my wifi g network. Took about 2 hours total to configure it all.

constantly disconnects & cuts speed, May 28, 2007
By Shar M. (CA, USA)
Own two of these in separate homes, both version 6 -- both have to constantly be reset/power-cycled because the wireless connection goes dead. Have also noticed in one home that the speed of our cable internet is being cut in half. Directly connected to the modem, speed tests indiciated ~4800kbps, directly connected to the router ~2500kbps, and wireless through the router ~1700kbps.
